This is why I will always prefer gaining xp through quests or job-system grinding. And it's already been established that people would not like to see monster-grinding replaced by job-system grinding. As such, I feel we will make little head-way on that front, unfortunatley.

I personally hate going around bashing monster brains in. I like it to have a purpose/goal. I think after you've destroyed the Yaun-Ti lair once (including Babylon), you kinda lose your "purpose" for that day.

Circular dungeons kill RP imo. I will always be a fan of quest-grinding. It's just a shame there's not enough man-power to crank out enough creative quests to get players to 30 without grinding gaps. Most of them are at lower levels. I have yet to see any "epic" quests.

Those would be cool.

maybe if the things that you can just about solo didn't give you 10 xp there wouldn't be a problem.

Well, the first step there would be to create a dungeon which is not circular. So, encounters only trigger once per run through, and once you've had a run you are locked out for a while so that other players can get in.

To do this without breaking immersion, you could have an NPC who takes you to the quest location (and, optionally, brings you back). If you try and do the quest again too soon, he makes some random excuse as to why you can't go back. You could have a whole story explaining why you can't just dive in there on your own, or you could let the PCs dive in and scream AHH! all the way down until they splat at the bottom.

It is a manpower issue, but that's not a show-stopper. What does tend to slam on the brakes is the sheer amount of work for one person to do in writing one quest. For example, if someone else wrote the dialogue/storyboard for a quest, I'd have no trouble figuring out the script to make it work, but I wouldn't know the best way to set up the areas or the creatures (aside from, as I said, one-shot and one-way).

Even if you could portal someone in, the dungeon isn't circular and will only spawn encounters once (until the quest is completed and/or everyone bugs out). If someone can portal out and back in again, that's no worse than what happens already.

Making the place completely closed (so, no portalling in or out) is certainly possible. But since everyone forgets to pack enough heal kits, raise scrolls, and potions, you may as well allow them to and just design the dungeon based on the availability of those things. Otherwise nobody will use the place.

I was under the assumption that rub out was a euphemism for masturbation. I used it quite alot in my uni days.

As it stands, I know how to script Amian dungeon crawls to be just like WoW dungeons (minus the whole multiple parties can go through the same dungeon at the same time thing). I could do the scripting and the dialogue/storyboard stuff, etc. I just fall short when it comes to designing the NPCs/monsters and things.

I've offered. Never been taken up on it. Don't expect to be either.

The only real way to do instancing is to have duplicate copies of the same area which isn't really desirable. What could allow multiple parties to run a quest without needless duplication, and indeed bringing increased fun to those who have ground up many characters before is essentially a pseudo-random transition system that makes each run through of the quest unique by taking you to different areas and perhaps with different subgoals but the same end result. It could easily be scripted to keep party members together if you know what you're doing. However this is more time consuming than the typical quest creation for obvious reasons (there is more content to be created).

On the off chance someone does want to think further about the idea I'm happy to provide insights or assistance on scripting it in this way.

XP is ridiculously easy to get on Amia. I can get from character creation to epic levels in about 3 days and I can get to 30 in a little over a week and I'm not even a real grinder. A real grinder can get to 30 in the amount of time it takes for me to get to 20.

Back on topic, though. Hunting is hunting is training is whatever you want to call it. While some people may not like it, it is one of the core basics that D&D is built around. Killing monsters. Of course, it wasn't on the level that it's done on Amia, but the intention is still there. I can understand wanting to have purpose to those mass murders, but there can always be a purpose somewhere. Sometimes you just have to fudge that purpose a bit, is all.

that kind of xp gaining IS grinding and requires a great group and not a lot of sleep.

qft

It took me quite a while to get my main to 30. And I don't appreciate being told by people that "you're doing it wrong" simply because I prefer RL and RP over grinding.

I solo things that give 50-60 xp per kill?

Im not saying folks grinding is bad, do this instead of that. Im just asking perhaps more creativity then saying lets hunt, or lets do training!

I'm not saying that anybody is doing anything right or wrong. My only point was that XP is insanely easy to come by on Amia. If one chooses to spend their time RP'ing, that is completely their choice. Yet, if that is how they spend their time, then they shouldn't complain about how it takes them forever to level. The exact opposite is true for those who grind all the time, they shouldn't complain about how their characters are never involved in RP.

In my opinion, the choice is not between whether you're going to RP or go fight monsters. It's how much RP you're going to do, how well you're going to get to know your party before during and after the fighting bit.

Though it may be grinding no matter how much you try to dress it up, it's much more bearable if it's not with randomdude15342 but with Dude R. Andom who has two hungry children aged three and four to feed, five people trying to kill him, and one really good friend. ;)

it doesn't matter whether you call it hunting or training or whatever. It's what happens that really defines the time you spend with a party.

Very much. As i recall it was an instant smite if any DM sees it, and instand fall for any cleric.

if they spend time RPing they should complain their level is low, on an RP server, right...

personally I no longer give a damn about XP. I have been happily RPing my new character since I entered the server with it, and am level 8 with no regrets, and no DC either.

the only thing that does bug me is, no, its not easy to get XP solo at all, you lie. powergamer >_<

Depends on the class :P

Fighter? Easy at the lower levels.
Rogue? Tough.
Mage? Puh-lease! Far to easy.

Soloing is a far slower way to gain XP, not least because if you die you have nobody to raise you and therefore your progress grinds to a halt. But also, because you can't fight through five or six enemies at the same rate a group can, and you don't get your Brucie bonus when fighting solo.

A rogue does far better with company because they can dish out more sneak damage. A mage does far better with company because they can crank through enemies more quickly. A fighter does far better with company because they can get buffs and healing which they usually have to supply out of their pocket.

Of course they all work better with groups, after all is the game centered around group work.

But when you solo with a single class things change, like a purple Dragon Knight. Granted, I never touched one before, but, eh. *shrug*

A rogue gets her sneak attack when flanking an opponent. While soloing she can't flank anyone, unless they cast spells.

A fighter can survive alone, but it is hard.

And a mage can summon two companions (Familiar + summon) PLUS dominate one with Dominate person/Monster/Undead, for a maximum of three which all can be buffed.

From all the classes has a Mage it the easiest to solo, that was my whole point Selmak. :P

Well, yeah, but if their meatshields are killed and they suddenly have something attacking them directly, a mage can get into some pretty dire straits. It's time for them to run around Benny Hill style, reach for the Ring of Invisibility, or some other escape tactic, unless they're a multi-class mage in which case it's time to get the boomstick out. ;)

A fighter on the other hand can win in a bad situation because their AC makes it harder to land a damaging hit on them, they get a better chance at hurting their opponents, and they hurt them a lot when they do hit. Plus of course, they can take more punishment.

That is why most mages run around with improved invisibility. It keeps you hidden and IF your meatshields die the mage just runs ^^

Old MMO term, short for "mobile". It's applicability to NWN is vague, though I doubt you'll get it cut from most gamer's lexicon. I've always liked "creep" myself.

It's 2 AM and there's 56 people on the servers. You'd find someone. This excuse of "there's no one around" doesn't hold much water these days.

not in the afternoon GMT theres not, there like 20 people max. and ICly finding people in range is harder than using the party people thing and stumbling across them somewhere.

(I admit night time since for americans its afternoon time, the server is maxed out and its not too hard.)

I always have found it irritating when people just decide to go "hunting" as if killing sentient life is a hobby, but frankly it's one of the core functions of the game and thus can't be avoided, and really it shouldn't be. RPing while you do it makes it rather enjoyable for the most part. That being said my personal favorite IC excuse for doing it is as follows:

Richard: Well looks like funds are getting kinda low again, who wants to pillage a sacred tomb and get some coin?

Quin: Knights don't pillage, that's wrong, knights "procure".

Vrok: We go now!

In my opinion, the perfect sentiment about how much OOC is engrained in peoples' idea of what is IC. Experience points are OOC. They are not necessary unless you need to be lvl 30 to do your roleplay.

training, honing your skills, and self defence unfortunatly, are IC things that require ganking vast amounts of monsters, if you don't wanna call it hunting or farming, increase the XP you get from kills. and it will no longer -be- farming.

What does Quin ICly making a joke about BLACK (The "Branded Legion of Amian Conscripted Knights") have to do with OOC fighting?

Without knowing Quin, the quoted line sounded like what alot of goodly characters do: paraphrase "let's kill things for gold and xp" into something vaguely IC covering for something almost entirely OOC.

//as a side note: Quin is clinically insane, thinks he's a noble knight, and will kill (or maim) anyone who suggests otherwise. That includes suggesting that he steals things. He doesn't steal things, he "Procures" them. :)

It's 2 AM and there's 56 people on the servers. You'd find someone. This excuse of "there's no one around" doesn't hold much water these days.

I'll screenshot the player count at my normal play time and send it to you, since it seems like whenever I say that not many people are on when I am I get hit with the reaction of "BS" or similar.
