Why do clerics use edged weapons? I thought they were disallowed from using them.

That's a stupid rule from previous editions. Luckily it was removed in 3e, because it made absolutely no IC sense.
I guess it was fitting for when clerics were automatically goodly healers. Well, it wasn't fitting really, because bludgeoning weapons can do nastier damage than blades, but I think that was the rationale. Also, I guess it was supposed to define party roles clearer, the cleric being stuck with poorer weapons than the fighter but using them with great efficiency against undead. It seems reasonable from a game design PoV, but then the game grew and everything had to be facilitated. Sometimes, it was a bad thing, but I think in this case it only makes IC sense.
The second paragraph is just speculation. I'm sure someone from those days could comment better.

Clerics can use any weapon they have the proficiency for these days.

In fact, lots of deities have edged favored weapons. Torm's is the greatsword, for example.

Made it easy to see who were clerics though. All had those sexy maces.

Also, 50% bonus damage vs undead? Sure is nice.

It's not really bonus damage, it's jsut not hitting a resistance, and it's generally only for skeletal undead. >.>

They just stole the idea of Middleage Europe. Priests we're not allowed to wield swords so when they went off to war thay used weapons such as maces and warhammers

Christianity will do this.. but yes.
Priests were forbidden to spill blood, and hence used blunt weapons.
*cough*
So they didn't spill blood, they SPLATTERED IT.

I read an IC explanation of it once, I believe it was either Pools of Radiance Trilogy, or Darkwalker Trilogy where it was explained to a young priest why he was supposed to use a warhammer instead of an edged weapon. It was something to do with an edged weapon causing the priest to be more concerned with the sharpness of his blade than the power of his diety or something like that. I lost the books like 20 years ago so I can't remember.

The 1e PHB entry for Clerics (p.20) says that "this class of character bears a certain resemblance to religious orders of knighthood of medieval times. [...] All are likewise forbidden to use edged and/or pointed weapons which shed blood."
The 2e PHB repeats the above for the 'generic' cleric, but notes that "not all mythoi are opposed to the shedding of blood. Indeed, some require their priests to use swords, spears, or other specialized weapons" (p.34).

Accoring to nwn2's favoured soul class, Hoar's favoured weapon is the spear.

shar's favorite weapon is the chirkum or something like that. However I dislike the "deity weapon" thing, There is lore however on weapons that the various churches use often, almost all of it is from 2nd edition though.

Maces would be better in NWN if they looked like maces. You know, this
Flanged maces are awesome.

I want javelins. How come NwN never implemented throwing spears, and one handed spears for the staple shield+spear combo?
Or even more awesome: Pikes with shield possibility. Phalanx, muahahaha.

I can send you a stripped down version of my override file. It is 99% PG-13 and has a whole shitload of stuff that really improves your experience. it also has the maces you see above.
