Ostland's navy stands destroyed, and Wiltun once more lays sole claim to the waters of Ruathym... with one exception. The sole survivor of the battle of Danzhaow, the heavy frigate Saber still floats. What will become of it? Raid Wiltun shipping, take refuge in neutral Amian ports, form alliances, deploy your marines and ready your weapons. Go down fighting! As the above suggests, participants in this campaign will play the command crew of a warship. Based somewhat on the fate of the German cruiser Emden in the first world war, you will be hunted and tracked, but cleverness and sound tactics might just see you through it. The fate of the vessel will be left to the players who command her, though the focus will be more on the shipboard interactions between characters rather than just having a dungeon crawl/battle every time. Survivors at the end will be permitted to continue the characters, and depending on the circumstances they will retain their rank in the Ostland Military. Overall I'm planning on a militaristic lawful evil slant, but don't let that restrict character ideas. Who we'll need: First Officer- Commands the ship by and large, final say in most decisions. Navigator/Helm- Plots courses, directs the ship at sea, they'll work with me a lot to have a good idea about the geography so they can advise well. Marine Kapten- Oversees the Ship's landing forces, keeps the conscript crew in check. Quarter Master- Important job with no regular means of supply and repair, keeps the ship repaired and advises on what's needed to keep sailing for another day. Other ideas: Master of artillery/gunnery sergeant Boatswain Anything else you might think of! Looking to run this Wednesday nights, I can be fairly flexible on time so we'll see who bites and go from there. feel free to PM with questions and to submit Characters.

I could have interest in this, but it's most likely going to be trouble with the timezones for me. It would have to be fairly early in EST to be something I can manage with school and all. Like around 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM EST kind of times.

Definitly interested, but during weekdays it would have to start at 2 or 3 PM EST the latest for me to be able to be there.

How do you expect a group of players who (presumably) have no training, knowledge or experience in naval operations to competently operate commanding positions on a heavy frigate? Not to mention during ship-to-ship battles.

Probably the same way adventures like Skull & Shackles or 7 Seas, etc., do. They sacrifice the minute and details for a system of challenges that make it fun and simplified.

If you are going for real hardcore mode, it is also acceptable to enlist in your nation's navy, and then apply to join this alternate beginnings after your term-of-service.

Personally, I'd recommend looking at the way ship combat is played out in the Rogue Trader RPG. It tends to make an abstraction of a lot of the minutae and treats ships much the same as characters, with actions on a turn-by-turn basis (raise shields, maneuver, fire cannons, reload torpedoes, execute boarding, etc.).
Plus, look at the way ship combat is handled in the more recent Assassin's Creed games. It all stays pretty simplistic but very entertaining.

Rogue Trader does it well, too, yes.
But Nivo's suggestion probably makes the most sense. I foresee an explosion of the Naval Academy thread in OOC.

I'd assume anything goes, save for Paladins and Druids. (Druidic magic being a executable offence in Ostland and no (real) Paladin would serve Bathrie)

I would be tempted towards the career Umberlandt onboard chaplain, appeasing the Bitch Queen with regular sacrifices and tending to the spiritual needs of the crew, otherwise. But Wednesday nights from now until early December are occupied with Rutter pieces for the holidays.

Hold on, Ostland's navy got destroyed? did this happen long ago or is it tied to the Amn plot? or tied to whatever happened when the WK ship was destroyed?

They do, however, they have exceptions in that regard. Abominations don't create themselves after all. Moreover, No, I have not OOC'ly decided the plot should come to an end, IC'ly yes groups are finally trying to do something about it, but it will end when and if they succeed, not based on a timetable.

I would be so down for this, it's not even funny.
So, the restricted classes, in total, would be the following?
Wizard Sorcerer Paladin Druid Palemaster Red Dragon Disciple
Are there literally ANY other restricted classes? And are there restricted races?

That's pretty much it for the restricted ones, yeah. A very very special druid or sorcerer I might consider.
As for Races, human is the order of the day. I -might- accept a half-elf if the submission was good enough.

I've come to the conclusion that I simply lack the time and drive to do this, because although I've always wanted to have a pirate or sailor of some kind, I have lots of other cool ideas I want to do, too, and they don't require me to be online for events; I can fit them into my schedule however I feel :/
It sounds amazing, but I don't think I'll do it unfortunately. Hope everyone has a blast though!!

Looks like our crew is nearly fleshed out. Thus far we have:
speedgrab- rigger
SamTheGiantSlayer- Navigator
rashid- Marine Kapten
Broldi- Artillery Officer
Sorrows- First Officer
We're still in need of a quarter master. So keep the requests coming!

Doh! I came up with a concept for a Marine Kapten today.
Are there still other places open?

I might be able to apply my concept to quartermaster. Historically, the quartermaster was also responsible for maintaining operational order and discipline (though this might overlap with the Marine Kapten somewhat), crew assignments and planning and resolving crew conflicts. Would that also fit the role in your concept for this ship/plot?

Since it's likely the crew would know each other pretty well before the beginning of the campaign, may we have a bit of teambuilding (yes, I hate that word and concept too) before we're thrown into the crucible? I'd relish the chance to get to know you all in character and out-of-character before we go down shooting in the campaign.

Sent mine last night. And I too think the concept of a prelude would be good, as it could explain how exactly the Sabre got away from the battle.

ive been considering getting back into nwn but i think im about done with the underdark, this, however, might be perfect.
have any selections been made yet? just so I know what to focus my efforts on for a writeup.
edit - where can I find ooc and ic information about the culture of Ostland? I'm going through the varia forum but it'd be helpful to not have to sift through unrelated information

I can't provide a link for Ostland in particular, but if you want a good background for reading up on Ruathym, try looking up some information on Iron Age/High Medieval Scandinavia; the Ruathymi (Ruathymar? I don't know what the proper adjective is) are the FR equivalent of Vikings. According to Ego, Ostland in particular are closer to what the Vikings historically were - traders and explorers primarily, raiders and pirates as a secondary profession with a long, storied history.
