We are esablishing this rule to curb any chance of your characters directly interacting with one another which is against the rules. We will be enforcing this rule in the coming weeks so those of you that do have, say, more than one paladin in the Order of Kohlingeneers can make the appropriate IC moves to remove them. A faction is: Any group that wishes to be formally recognised by the DM team for future perks such as an in game area or subforum, drow houses, city councils, secret societies, religious Factions, etc. Faction leaders, as always, still have the power to refuse entry to any character or player for any reason be it IC or OOC.

I almost feel that incest is harmless compared to having a character in every faction, but not doing either strikes me as common sense, so huzzah anyways.

Sounds like it will work well, especially in part with DM events when people are asked to pick one side of the fence if they have an alt on the opposing side to the character they're currently involved with, in said event, for the whole conflict of interests thing and may encourage more time put in to a certain character for longer periods, than dividing time between alts all the time. I know I've been one to hop between characters more than I should in the past and it wasn't much good for developing them, really, so I know first hand even just select sets of time to spend longer on one character can have a nice impact.

While my dwarf and my paladin can't actually curb stomp each other, obviously, is there any official ruling on how alts should be used for those of us with paladins and dwarves?

I've been thinking about suggesting this rule for some time now. I've always found it to be a conflict of interest when people have multiple toons in the same faction. On another server I used to play on, it was rule that a player could not have toons in multiple factions. I know this sound a bit hardcore, and maybe depreciates the potential for RP, but it really does cut down on the potential and possibility for accidental metagame, and also curbs altitis to a certain extent too as it would take away another avenue for someone to even make a new toon. There would be several schools of thought for sure, but in my own opinion, this can only be a win in the long run. Good play, guys and gals

This is fine. Never understood the appeal in having multiple characters belonging to the same group. The whole thing with.. referencing something an alt of yours did is pretty tacky.

That is actually a matter to take up with the faction leader because it is his/her decision. I refused/dismissed several people in the Grove for this reason.

Considering how faction relations change over time, it's rather impossible to make a fair rule about opposed factions anyhow.

Why? Doing so makes the post aggressive and threatening, which isn't the tone the Amian DMs have ever taken, or should ever strive to take.

Having an OOC discussion beforehand is a good idea. Keeping opposing faction characters apart is tricky at best. I've turned down the job of intermediary between two characters played by the same player. It can be a right mess.

What Derk said. This rule is completely different to say, muling, or metagaming. So I'll put emphasis on "it depends on the circumstances."

I've been wholly handling things on an IC only basis and just giving people the benifit of the doubt. I'd been told a few conflicting things and figured this was a good time to get an official response. I never pay much attention to the player names and know a few folks who obscure their alts through different gamespy ID's so unless someone owns up it's impossible for a player to enforce anyway.

I never saw the issue with alts in an opposing faction. We're all adults here, if that's something you have to worry about we've fundamentally screwed up somewhere along the lines in being a roleplay server. All in all huzzah this sounds.. reasonable.

What is going to be the situation if you already have +1 chars in a faction? Will there need to be RP justification or can you just "yoink" them and pretend it never happened?

Quote: Lets say Redd and co in Barak Runedar find out it's the Triad's fault their mead is weak this year and think it's time to curb stomp some Kohlingers. I approve! Never mess with a dorf's ale, not to mention an entire citadel's ale supply. This means war!! But seriously, I've often wondered how long it would be till a ruling like this was given. To me it just makes more sense. If I were in a position of authority here, god help you all if I were, I would have pushed for this long ago. I'm such a tyrant I would also push for a maximum number of characters allowed by some measure. Copious amounts of Alts are the bane of the Forgotten Realms and RP servers everywhere! hehe This ruling has effectively reduced the citadel's played population a bit. Gul has a couple dwarves, I had a couple dwarves, as well as a couple others. I already killed Gunderlag off during the siege battle, Reddok will now need to come up with a reason to send poor lil Qenwick home. Yet I support this ruling. I usually do keep a pair of staggered lower level Alts to help friends and faction members find folks to run with. I will have to make a couple new non-dwarf ones not within the Barak Runedar faction to keep legit. Don't see that happening real soon as Gunny and Qen were rarely played as it was. I have always been concerned with a character belonging to multiple factions. Course I usually play dwarves, my mains usually are honorable and extreme loyalists like Reddok, just ask poor poor Zelly the grief she's been through over Red's ideals. Has been a bumpy road between them on that front. I am also appreciative of the fact we can deny would be faction members based on OOC reasons as well. I've had to deal with this on a previous server, a woman was trying to join our faction while she had multiple characters in all, and I mean ALL, the other factions good, evil, and otherwise. When I raised OOC concerns about this stating I always prefer our players be dedicated to their character within our faction for the betterment and enjoyment of everyone within the faction. She blew a freaking gasket! It was like I called her mother and little sister 2 bit whores. I was lucky a DM was lurking in on our conversation, what ensued was a couple months of hostile emails and threats against our faction. Since she was buddy's with the woman being in charge fell upon, she then went on to become a DM and effectively ran off my entire faction one by one by harassing them and lying. I didn't play NWN again for a couple years, reinstalled NWN1 after getting the itch again, and found Amia. Be kind to your fellow players Amians...

Quote:  Faction leaders, as always, still have the power to refuse entry to any character or player for any reason be it IC or OOC. Apologies for being slightly tangential, but I'm curious: is there a formal definition of "faction leader"? If the above is among the criteria, then nobody on an elected Council would qualify, as nobody in the faction has any control over who gets elected.
