Tale Fifty: Looking Back and Moving ForwardIt seems so long ago that I set out, To find the things that I was then without, And maybe to escape the feeling too, That all the better days were done and through, The people I looked up to way back then, Were gone and never would come back again.
At first I didn't miss my Winyan home, My heart was longing desperately to roam, I found adventure, it distracted me, So many storied journeys did I see! And through it all my heart and outlook grew, I found myself and what I wanted too.
But looking back to Winya, I don't know, If I am ready back again to go, Have I fulfilled the vow I made back then? Are things there better now than they have been? I've changed so much but I have much to learn, I think I'm still not ready to return.
I've started a new chapter in my life, Away from all the painful, bitter strife, That plagued the recent tendays that I've seen, From black and grey to light and forest green, And less and less the old roads I retrace, Now more and more I feel I've found my place!
So many friends I've found along the way, Some still around and in my life today, Some join me for a bit and then depart, But all of them still live within my heart, They changed my life so much as I went on, Their memory each day is never gone!
This brief reflective moment I allow, And looking back and moving forward now, I'm filled with joy that I still live today, How happy in the middle of the way, Not at the destination yet for me, But so much more adventure still to see!

*A second volume of the Book of Tales, with tales twenty-one through fifty, is published and made available in small numbers at Mr. Hill's Books, as well as delivered to the libraries in Cordor and the Triumvir* --------------------------------- Tale Fifty-One: ExplorationThe rain comes pouring from a thunderstorm, And slowly it puts out our fire warm, And in the storm our conversation ends, So taking down the campsite with my friends, We three decide to go explore the land, And see the inner forest sights first hand! Friend Elor says he knows about a place, A shrine the highest hilltop does encase, So Eil'ron and I follow then behind, Until he finds a rope in vines confined, And climbing it, what sights we see up there! A magic shrine is rising in the air! The thickest foliage I had ever seen, No creatures here to eat the bushes green, And rising like a crown over the scene, A noble cherry blossom so serene, The falling flowers off the cliff careen, And slowly fall into the air so clean! And as we walk along the hilltop crest, We find some giant eggs in giant nest! What creature laid such giant eggs as these, And in a place so high above the trees? We leave the eggs untouched there where they lay, And down the rope again we make our way! Now back again on lower land we stood, And then we spot another in the wood! It's Kaithan coming down from Winya fair, And so with us the journey she does share, A happy thing to meet another friend, Together up the cliffs we four ascend! Friend Kaithan leads us up another rope, And skirting there along the cliff-side slope, We find a ladder down into a vale, And down a short but still well-trodden trail, We find a little village hiding there, So close but yet we two were unaware! And up another rope we climb and see, A tree-house with a wooden balcony! The view does rise above the cliff-side walls, And there we look out to the lake and falls, To see the camp and layout of the lands, The magic vale the Crystal Lake commands! And climbing down we find a cavern pair, And entering we find in humid air, A magic little garden in a square, With rabbits roaming round without a care! We four spend many moments chatting there, But where the owners are we're unaware! But then friend Elor says he cannot stay, And when he goes we leave and make our way, Back to the lake and Sehanine's small shrine, And there when Kaithan walks we see a sign, A light appears there in a glowing line, The altar comes aglow with the divine! We two are quite surprised at Kaithan's gifts, Our conversation there our spirits lifts! And for a little more then we three roam, But then our newest friend must return home, And waving there as Kaithan goes away, We bid good-bye to such a pleasant day!

Tale Fifty-Two: Windsong Day breaks over our island once again, That soft and subtle glow starts slowly in, And rosy-fingered dawn with rose-red hue, Brings summer's swelter sun back into view, The lands of browns and greens soak up the heat, And night-time's cooling calm starts to retreat.
And then the sea breeze speeds a little more, The wind picks up and pulls some clouds ashore, And clouds collect and climb up in the sky, Those summer storm-clouds slowly passing by, And as the heat increases, the wind too Starts picking up its quickened pace anew.
And sweeping west from Wharftown winding through, The winds through farms and fallow swiftly flew, And sweeping through the hills and canyon walls, Familiar paths the blowing wind recalls, And blowing by the plants it lifts and stirs, To newer homes their seeds the wind transfers.
And rising, speeding round the Mylock hills, The wind in freedom wanders where it wills And carrying the Dale's orchard scent, And Dale's windmill turns with its consent, And grinds to flour all the Dale's wheat, From winds here wandering the Dale eats.
It touches tops of trees in passing now, And even tallest trees do bend and bow. From central forest out to Nexus next, The whisper of the wind all lands affects, And sailing by it sees us sitting there, And races by and passes through our hair.
Ascending then and falling rapidly, So now the wind starts sailing out to sea, And bids good-bye and leaves us all behind, All those of us on Amia confined, How small our island is where sea-winds roam, And ever on they pass over our home.

Tale Fifty-Three: The Raising of the Standing Stone At first the elves just lived among their own, In Cormanthyr they always dwelled alone, The other races viewed suspiciously, Their differences were all that they could see, A darker time within the City then, Before the greatness grew to what had been.
While living there alone they stayed in peace, The elder elven ways there never cease, But slowly Cormanthyr turned curious, A mission to the humans they discuss, To see the Dalelands with their own eyes, Perhaps their views of humans to reprise!
The Coronal himself and trusted folk, Came down and with the human elders spoke, And in his wisdom, and to their great pride, The prejudice he wisely set aside, And holding out a hand to humans then, He vowed cooperation with the men!
A treaty then did Cormanthyr enact, And made with humans then a sacred pact, That in the lands of Uvaeren the fair, The Dalemen could come and settle there, And elves would welcome them there by decree, To live in Cormanthyr then equally!
And on the dusk of that great Nightal day, The Coronal and humans made their way, To start the ritual of Quamaniith, The elves and human wizards then forthwith, Began to raise a monolith of stone, A beacon of their friendship to be shown!
The Standing Stone was made to stand at last, To say good-bye to separated past! From then the races lived in harmony, A brighter future all would quickly see, Myth Drannor soon to open up her gate, All races come to make the city great!
How often those of us on our fair isle, Forget our history after a while, The glory of the great City of Song, Forgotten as the long years go along, How once all races stood together there, And prospered there in old Myth Drannor fair!

Tale Fifty-Four: Silent Speech That tender twinkle burning in your eyes, The warmest words and languages defies, It whispers meaning clearer than a call, The clearest conversation of them all, That silent, subtle whisper in a glance, That speaks the silent speech of our romance.
There is a language old and ancient here, That in the wilds of nature does appear, As forest creatures whisper wordless thought, That basic bond that nature always taught, Communication silently connects, The forest creatures each one to the next.
And even we removed from nature's hold, Still have a sparkle of that language old, A distant echo of unspoken speech, That still today into our hearts does reach, A dim distortion of that ancient tongue, That yet survives from when the world was young.
But still mysterious your silent glance, A bittersweetly secret doubtful dance, That makes me wonder if I saw it right, Was love then lingering in your eyes bright? Can you now truly feel the way I do? Does that bright shimmer in your eyes speak true?
But in your touch I feel your feelings clear, Like words you whisper right into my ear, I feel your heartbeat speaking through your touch, Your finger-tip then tells to me so much, Your deepest feelings clearly on display, Much more than merely words would ever say!

Tale Fifty-Five: The War of Trampled Leaves One morning long ago in Winya fair, I heard the shouts rise up into the air, The guards were shouting, "We're under attack!" Defenders at the gates were falling back! The bridge with ogre foes was overrun! The War of Trampled Leaves and then begun!
The ogres came to tear down Winya's gates, And quickly filling up the entrance straits, They started running free within the town, And knocking many elves and guardsmen down, I watched with horror from my windowsill, What terror did the ogre force instill!
But captain Amilith still stood his ground, As deadly ogre forces swarmed around! And soon some citizens came running in, A rally and resistance to begin! The ogre band's resolve started to slack, And in a bitter fight they get pushed back!
Confusion then and grief as from the trees, The city comes and the destruction sees, The broken trees and buildings so widespread, The cries of mourning elves for fallen dead, How many to Corellon then did pray, How vulnerable the city felt that day!
But then the city armed for its defense, The building of a fort did soon commence, And under Nexus Falls and open skies, The Old Fort Hill saw ramparts quickly rise, And each new morning Winyan elves went out, To go patrol along the Minmir route!
And many other times the ogres fought, To break into the town again they sought, Each foe was so much larger than before! The ogres had been altered for this war! With beastmen hoards their forces were combined, And leading all were lizardmen behind!
The Winyan council met and soon decreed, A Minmir scouting mission would proceed, To find out more about the city's foe, And so into the caverns there they go, And find a dark machine there was the source, Of magic alterations to their force!
As cycles pass again the foes sweep in, With ogres altered more than they had been, And with them then were many lizardmen, Commanding all the battle forces then, But elf defenders charged into the fray And soon the Winyan forces won the day!
A scouting mission soon the council sent, And into lands of lizardmen they went, And found a cave and evidence inside, That over foes the lizardmen preside, But all their shamen were no longer there, They had retreated to the beastmen lair!
And so with allied knights from Kohlingen, The plans for an attack did soon begin! The knights would enter from the northern side, While elves from southern lands would storm inside, And storming through the caves in unison, The leaders would have nowhere left to run!
And on the day agreed then with the knights, The elves marched out under the morning lights, And watching from my windowsill again, I saw the mighty Winyan forces then, Their grim, determined faces marching on, We watched in nervous silence in the dawn!
The forces gathered at the beastmen den, And with the order given to begin, The knights and Winyan elves swept quick inside, And with the many enemies collide, Both groups were forcing their opponents back, And soon the allies joined in their attack!
And in the cave they find a third machine, Just like the ones in other caverns seen, But as the allies swarm on through the cave, The foe comes flanking in a deadly wave, And those who stayed at the machine defend, Until the endless waves of fighters end!
And pushing on into the cavern deep, The allied forces to the end now sweep, And through a magic portal there they find, The lizard shamen with their friends combined, Then elven warriors and knights allied, Charge bravely into battle side by side!
The mighty lizard shamen fall at last, Their deadly plans for war at last have passed! And slowly all the allies leave from there, And make it back at last into the air, Each elf and human wounds and losses bears, The wounded and the fallen in their prayers!
And then to Winya all the elves return, To faces of their loved ones still concerned, And all of us who they had left back here, Rejoiced to see our warriors appear! The war was over and all rested then, And peace returned to Winya once again!

Tale Fifty-Six: The Arrow in Flight The forest's filled with predators tonight, The hunters and the hunted in their sight, And Eil'ron quietly pursues her prey, Her distant deadly skill is on display, And stalking now a stag in forest deep, A calm and quiet distance does she keep!
And all goes silent for a moment then, Her movements stop, she freezes once again, Her eyes start shifting, seeing all the scene, To track the stag that feeds in forest green, And spotting it she stalks with slowest pace, Deliberate steps with smooth and feline grace!
No sudden movements for the prey to heed, Her hand starts moving with a steady speed, And arching back to bring an arrow out, She slowly moves, a silent stalking scout, And bit by bit she brings it to the bow, The notches round the bowstring slowly go!
She pulls the bow, the oak begins to creak, Her shoulders now betray her strong physique, The spindles bring the bowstring barely back, Her gaze is gauging angles of attack, And holding back the bow she sights her prey She sees the strike is just a pull away!
The stag looks up and feels the danger now, A moment still the huntress does allow, With one eye open following the deer, She senses its connection and its fear, And for a quiet moment all she hears, Is her own quiet breathing in her ears!
And breathing out she takes her final aim, A final fateful look out to her game, Her careful calm and strength is at its height, But now she lets the arrow go in flight! The bowstring snaps against her forearm tight, But never does the arrow leave her sight!
It spins and twists and dances in the air, And sails to the stag still unaware! The feathers floating back against the breeze, The arrow flies along with lightest ease! And following the huntress and her view, It strikes the stag and finds its target true!
And finally she slackens in her hunt, And walks a couple paces out in front, She breathes a quiet breath of victory, The body of the stag she goes to see, The predator approaches now her prey, The huntress ends her hunting for the day!

Tale Fifty-Seven: The Present Star The latest moons have passed by in a dream, A single happy day sometimes they seem, But seeming remnants of my darker past, Reminds me just how great is the contrast, Between those days of worrying and pain, And all the happiness these days contain.
To see her there, a weakened, searching form, From former poise and might she did transform, No orders now but questions on her mind, No peace and calm she ever seems to find, I see myself and all that I have found, The joy and peaceful days are all around.
I've walked so many miles of my way, From when I left my home up to today, And never have I seen what made me leave, But I'm a fool now to still believe, That searching in my past will give me peace, That finding him would make my worries cease.
Instead of always bearing him in mind, I'll leave the chains of all my past behind, And not like her who never can escape, The present and the future I will shape, No need to make excuses for the past, While present days go speeding by so fast.
I've sailed ever chasing what has gone, But endless is this route I'm sailing on, I see in you the light of every star, A steady light that guides me from afar, No more to chase the way things could have been, It's time now for our own life to begin.

Tale Fifty-Eight: Homecoming
You never know how much you love a place, When you are there confined, You find it in the many days away In leaving it behind.
The thoughts of home were ever on my mind, They meant so much to me, The sights, the smells, that old familiar feel, That make a memory.
No matter where my travels carried me, Each night in reverie, I see fair Winya as it always was, As it would ever be.
And coming back again through Winya's gates, I see that little changed, The trees, the buildings waited here for me, As down the road I ranged.
But something feels so different today, Not quite as I had known It's I who isn't as I was back then, As years passed I have grown.
And though I know it won't be quite the same, Before I left to roam, I feel so happy to be back again, To live here in my home!

Tale Fifty-Nine: Renesthal's Tale The gentle breeze goes passing overhead, And finds us now within the Grove instead, And as we sit and talk there in the night, Rene stands up nearby the fire light, And tells to us a story of the fey, And takes us back into a distant day!
He says that when the world was still quite young, Before the many elven songs were song, There still remained the dragon kingdoms then, And realms of fey back how they once had been, For fair Titania did govern all, Each fey did answer then her ruling call!
But one day dwarves were mining in the earth, And found a diamond there of greatest worth, But all the dwarves who saw were taken back: The diamond was a perfect, darkest black! From rocky cave the diamond then they lift, And bring it to the Queen to make a gift!
But with the queen, her sister too was there, And at the perfect diamond she did stare, And jealousy did enter in her heart, Her plotting and desire did then start, She felt the diamond calling out to her, A darkened feeling in her starts to stir!
One day at last the Queen she did betray, And rose and stole the diamond black away, And fleeing back to where it first was found, She gathered all the evil fey around, And soon that darkest mountain was their seat, Her separation with the queen complete!
And so there were two courts then of the fey, A separation that remains today, The ones who stayed together with the Queen, And those who joined the theft that they had seen, No more to live together as had been, And never to return to home again!

Tale Sixty: Graveyard In walking down the way today I slowed, And stopped before a graveyard near the road, A quiet place with nature all around, The grass and simple flowers there abound, I turned off from the road for just a bit, And near the ancient gravestones then I sit.
I place a hand upon that weathered stone, And feel the pits where mosses green have grown, So many storms and wind gusts they have seen, Since when they were fresh hewn and sanded clean, And bought for dearest price for dearest dead, To stand here ever-watching, ever-read.
Each name that all the gravestones still display, Was once alive and walked in light of day, And maybe they too felt the joy of love, Or felt the pain of loss when still above, Or were a father, mother, or a friend, But as for all, one day they reached their end.
And when they passed their loved ones felt the grief, That time alive together was too brief, They didn't want to let their memory, Depart and be forgotten silently. They raised this stone and hoped that it would last, That passers-by would not forget the past.
The names are nearly worn away by time, The surface of the stone in soot and grime, The writing clear has faded out instead, But yet today their names can still be read. Rest now, good souls who lived here long ago, Your names live on as down the road I go.

Tale Sixty-One: Darby's Tale Another cycle sees me down the way, And at the crossroads like a normal day, I see a group of people chatting there, And stop to listen in the forest air, But they told stories not of plants and trees, But of good Darby's travels on the seas!
So Sunny starts to tell her story then! With rival pirate captain he began, Who came and hijacked Darby's ship and stuff! She gathered up her friends and soon enough, She found a dear old friend with ship and crew, Who joined with Darby in her questing too!
And sailing out to track the pirates down, They find a pirate island of renown, Where all the pirates took her stolen ship, And out into the island they all slip, And find a massive army of the foe, To fight against them everywhere they go!
Clash! The friendly fighters run on out! Slash! They charge the pirates with a shout! Crash! As Darby with the leaders fights! Boom! Good Sunny clears the cliffside heights! Swoosh! They leap over the enemies, But then some deadly trouble her group sees!
For as they reach the center of the land, They see the cunning trick the foes had planned! There deadly traps in hundreds did abound, And covered every inch of all the ground! They start disarming them with varied grace, By some with skill, by Darby with her face!
By then more pirate enemies ran in, And Ulrik and good Sunny turn and spin, And hold them off while Darby and her troupe, Disarm the traps at last and then regroup, And all together charge the pirates down, And foes and disarmed traps soon fill the ground!
But now into a building they all race, And find a massive secret pirate base, But in the twisting maze of tunnel space, More waves of deadly pirates they must face, And finally they come up to a door, But from behind it came a beastly roar!
They kick the door and quickly storm inside! But there a chained up ogre they all eyed! For freedom and revenge the creature cried, And freeing it it joined our hero's side, And led the friends down deeper in the cave, And fought the pirates wave after each wave!
But sadly soon the ogre fell and died, And when this sad event good Lila eyed, She changed her form into a golem shape, And charging loudly down into the scrape, She sent the pirates running quick away, And soon they reached the end of their long way!
They break into the final room at last, And see the captain with her crew amassed, And holding Darby's swords there in her hand, She readied then to make her final stand! An epic, deadly battle there they see, But in the end they win the victory!
And gathering good Darby's stolen things, A long ascending passage escape brings, And when they come back out into the air, They see the pirates rounded up out there! So finally they all can rest at ease, And Darby's ship the group at last does seize!
But with the pirate captain now quite dead, Her pirate crew joins Darby's crew instead! And boarding back into their ships again, They leave behind that pirate island then, And sail off into the seas once more, To many more adventures still in store!

Tale Sixty-Two: Mountain ClimbThe bow-strings bend and arrows arc away, A trip with Elor and Eil'ron today, The three of us pass through the troll-filled hills, And slip into some darkened cavern chills, But afterwards we see how high we are, And look out on the lower lands afar. The mountains rise and with them rise the clouds, The storm that forms against the mountain crowds, From white they change into a darker gray, And soon the thunderbolts are on display, The rain comes falling down in heavy sheets, The evergreens and mountain cliffs it meets. But as we climb, ascending higher now, The rain-storm stops from beating on my brow, So up into that grayest sky I gaze, And even now in summer's warmest days, The cool snow begins to drift on down, And starts collecting gently on the ground! We walk ahead and ever climbing more, And find a bridge that over hills does soar, The snow that's falling all around us there, Goes falling down below us in the air, And for a moment all that I can see, Is swirling snow-flakes all surrounding me! And then we come to Guldorand at last, The wind-borne snow has calmed and soon has passed, And Eil'ron's smiling as around we roam, The town reminds her of her distant home, She puts her hand against the tallest trees, With eyes closed tight her childhood she sees! As Elor leaves our mountain journey ends, A pleasant mountain trip with pleasant friends, And slowly then we go into the inn, The fireplace is warm and dry within, And sitting close the snow so distant seems, As warm and safe we dream of future dreams.

Tale Sixty-Three: Practice I rise from reverie out at the lake, And watching see that you are not awake, The crisp and cool morning air around, The softest dew is laying on the ground, And so I take my lute out from my pack, And sling it quietly over my back!
I slip my sandals off and with bare feet, I smile back and quietly retreat, And walk a ways up to the forest high, To find a quiet forest glade nearby, Where I can practice with my lute alone, And play the many songs that I have known!
To play alone is quite a pleasing thing, My choice and cherished songs alone I sing, But after all my contemplative route Today I merely take back out my lute, And after walking quite a ways away, I find a forest glade and there I stay.
I close my eyes and feel the forest breeze, And as the wind blows calmly through the trees, Then for a moment sounds of forests flee, A quiet forest calm coves over me, And then I start to play the lute at last, Some quiet calming chords from distant past.
Each note I play comes straight from in my heart, A minor chord progression then I start, My fingers pluck my saddest melodies, The notes bring all the pain from memories, The sounds of love I've lost in every string, Of failed dreams and and all the pain they bring.
And pausing then I turn to major chords, I play the happiness your love affords, The notes rise upwards like a hawk in flight, And drift down happily from distant height, My heart made audible for all to hear, But in my practice only for my ear.
I play the final notes and slowly stand, I open up my eyes and hear the land, The quiet sounds of all the forest now, So grander than my lute strings could allow, The master's greatest notes rise and surround, In symphonies of nature all around!

Tale Sixty-Four: Actand AdventureThe other day while in the Triumvir, With many friends around the fire near, Good Tana thought to go explore around, Adventure in a deadly battle ground, And as she quickly forms a friendly crew, I go along to travel with them too! We all arrive and make our way along, At first the foes we find are not that strong, But then we come upon a striking sight, A fair angelic creature bathed in light! He tells us of the battle just inside, And asks our help to join and turn the tide! As soon as we emerge inside their base, We see the deadly foes that we would face, The demons stronger than I'd ever seen, And all across the grizzly battle scene, The bodies of celestial allies lay, As demon forces seem to win the day! Then Tana leads the group in our attack! She charges in and forces demons back! Celestial fighters come and join her side, And with demonic forces they collide, As from the back I watch it open-eyed, To see the power of our goodly guide! Beside me there friend Miirah draws her bow, And with a breath she lets her arrows go, And with them sails magic all around, They whistle with a strangely arcane sound! She draws her bow again and lighting fast! A storm of arrows quickly sails past! And as we move outside the bastion's gates, A larger group of demons there awaits! My friends go bravely fighting to the shore, Where ships unload the demons for the war, But soon our group defeats them in their ship, And quickly out into the sea we slip! But sailing in a battle is quite hard, The demon ships approach ours and bombard, They board our ship and fight us desperately, And some dear friends go falling in the sea, While others swing with ropes out to the shore, And at their island base we join once more! The demons see and charge up to confront, But Kasumi and Nori take the front! As Kasumi swings with her martial skill, Swift Nori spins his short swords for the kill, A deadly dance of stealth he there displays, A perfect balance of their fighting ways! And then we see the mighty demon lord! He charges out with all his demon horde! But for my bravest friends he is no match, And even this huge demon they dispatch! In victory our group's adventure ends, A tribute to the strength of my good friends!

Tale Sixty-Five: Prayer to Rillifane
Retreating from the city, Your glade comes into view, And Rillifane the ancient, Tonight I pray to you.
The world always changing, And tempers now aflame, But you are ever watching, And ever stay the same.
And walking wooded pathways, From stone and walls withdrawn, I feel your great connection, That ever guides me on.
In calm and peaceful places, I hear then quietly, Your wise and calming whispers, In perfect harmony.
And here with no words spoken, My heart calls out to you, To quietly be with me, And show me what to do.
Make me slow to action, Make me slow to hate, And calm my heart to listen, Your wisdom I await.
Remind me that your presence, Is everywhere we go, And guide us and protect us, As in our lives we grow.

Tale Sixty-Six: Sea Voyage The dock-bells ring and sing with clearest sound, That carries out to all the port around, The waves come washing up against the pier, That soft and spraying sound as they come near, The gulls for fish rise up and out they fly, In crystal blue of perfect cloudless sky.
The bustle of the trade and travel here, Is blurring to the eye and to the ear, The welcomes and the partings and the flow, Of coming home and then of letting go, The pain to say goodbye and then to turn, The joy and great relief of friend's return.
And like the others we will travel too, As Guston's ship comes steady into view, It pushes up against the wooden dock, And to the water's edge the people flock, Some leave his ship to travel yet again, But we ascend our journey to begin.
And as the ship again takes too the sea, We stand and watch, the fading shore we see, The city and the people we hold dear, And cares and places shrink and disappear, So all that's left is blue infinity, And all we knew is now just memory.
The gentle breeze is guiding peacefully, Though soft and blue-green sweeping of the sea, And for a moment we are all alone, At mercy of the waves and breezes blown, Of weather and of weary weathered wood, Of skills that Captain Guston understood.
But soon we see the distant land appear, And slowly now the shore comes sailing near, The faces small at first come into view, And then the busy bustle starts anew, As Ael'thil, Eil'ron and I leave the ship, In foreign lands continuing our trip.

Tale Sixty-Seven: The Solitary Swordsman So strict and steady on the swordsman trains, Through silent practice and through long campaigns, He feels his skill in blood within his veins, But ever more as blood his weapon stains, Away from all the others he remains, He loses something with the skill he gains.
With nothing to protect he wanders still, His life devoted only to his skill, He thinks his bond with others just corrupts, As what deceives, his discipline disrupts, And so alone he ever wanders on, He thinks his life with others now is gone.
But what's a blade without a driving cause? What good is fighting on without a pause? To fight for fighting's sake is just a life, That's lost without a meaning in the strife, The only contribution left behind, Is violence for violence in kind.
He feels he passes by without effect, But even now with us he does connect, Each step he walks, each action that he takes Affects us all, a lasting change it makes, And even more, his absence while away, Diminishes his people day by day.
The blood you have connects you with us all, It's calling with its ancient, steady call, Come home, good swordsman, come protect us now, Let our defense become your honored vow, Come teach our warriors the way to be, And take your place within society!

Tale Sixty-Eight: Love SongsSome songs about how sweet our love has been, As now new phases in our lives begin. Comforting Touch How quickly all the worries of the day, My troubles and my pain just melt away, Such comfort does your touch to me allow, And all my life becomes so simple now, The thought of you is all that's in my mind, What perfect happiness in you I find!
And like a leaf that's sitting on the ground, Gets lifted by the wind and dances round, And swirling, dancing, spinnig in the air, And flying through the sky without a care, Your touch lifts up my heart and lets it fly, And sends me soaring up into the sky!
And even if I'm merely dreaming dreams, If all today is nothing like it seems The memory will live within my heart, These happy thoughts of you will never part, My growing care for you just means too much, This happy dream of lying in your touch.
Wish
I rise and you're still sleeping, Still resting peacefully, And holding you I wish that, You'd always been with me!
I wish that I had known you, Back when we both were young, Before our many journies, Before our lives begun.
I wish our bond was older, Our friendship always strong, I wish I had your comfort, Throughout my whole life long!
But now I know how lucky, I am to have you now, To savor every moment, As long as fates allow!
And now my only wish is, To start our life anew, To live with you together, You are my wish come true!

Tale Sixty-Nine: Passages through Time The night-time comes after a pleasant day, And smiling as back home I make my way, I find the tree-flat empty for a bit, So out upon the wooden deck I sit, A cup of tea is swirling in my hand, And leaning back I look upon the land.
The humid summer evenings last so long, The summer birds still out to sing their song, The Winyan children running all around, They laugh and make their happy youthful sound, Soon Thamian with Nariel anew, Perhaps some day our own small children too.
And slowly they will grow through youthful years, They'll grow through hopes and dreams and fearful tears, I'll watch them still from where today I am, And as they age we all will age with them, And older then, we'll live our lives through theirs, We'll feel their pain and joy and share their cares.
And on some distant day they'll settle down, With children of their own that gather round, And as we watch our children in their prime, Three generations' passages through time, That brings the children from how they have been, To how we were when we were watching then.
And aging on, we live our lives in threes, Our children's life and children on their knees, And with their lives we still enjoy our own, With family we'll never be alone, And then one day our lives will reach their ends, Our souls to Arvandor Corellon sends.
But now my thoughts of future days go by, And sitting on the deck in fading sky, The Winyan children make their way back home, Still laughing as the Winyan streets they roam, And even though a single day is done Our passages through life have just begun!

Tale Seventy: Dreamer's Songbook Just for a Day
Today I dreamed that I was someone else, Somebody far from here, The things I see within my daily life, In dreams did disappear.
And in my dream I lived another life, Somewhere that's far away, And passed my time there as this other soul, In dreams just for a day.
And there I met so many other souls, So many other friends, My bond with them grew strong and stronger still, Mere dreaming it transcends.
I lived a lifetime there within the dream, I cared and loved and grew Just for a day, but so much more it seemed, As time so quickly flew.
A dreamer's sights seem real to dreamer's eyes, They seem like they are true, As what you see within a looking glass, Reflecting back at you.
I feel that things we see within our dreams Although they are not real, Become a part of us as our true selves, As things we truly feel.
And so today as into rest I pass, Perhaps I'll make my way, To live that other life there once again, In dreams just for a day.
Then and Now
Now tell me good adventurer, Of when you first set out, Before you mastered all those skills, And wandered far about.
Do you remember what you saw, When seeing roads anew? The wonder and the mystery, In lands that you passed through?
And walking down those early roads, Remember who you saw? Those strong and brave adventurers, You looked upon with awe?
How far from them you seemed back then, How far they seemed away, Such martial skill and knowledge too, Such power on display!
Invincible they looked back then, The ones of whom you dreamed, But know now good adventurer, That you are as they seemed!
Remember what you needed then, How much some help then meant, Their road is hard like yours back then, When down their road you went.
The deeds you do will shape them now, You shape what they will see, Some day they'll grow in power too, And then like you they'll be.

Tale Seventy-One: Summer Storm The summer rain comes down in calming drops, As at the lake-side village our group stops, To smile and delight in company, To cook a meal and enjoy some tea, While gentle rain-drops drop and soften all, As summer slowly slips into the fall.
But for a mid-day moment rain-drops cease, The hazy sunlight rays start to increase, Then slowly skies start darkening again, The blues and greens turn darker grey and then, The peaceful rain-clouds darken and transform; We hear the rumble of a thunder-storm!
At first the rumbling thunder's far away, The distant booming bass that storm-clouds play, But nearer, nearer still we hear the sound, And soon a stronger rain is raining down, The larger drops fall harder on my friends, As fear with fascination now contends!
The storm-clouds draw their darker veil in, And in the darkness lightning-bolts begin! The faster flashes flicker all around, They light up rain-drops falling to the ground, And faces of my friends turned up to see, While thunder booms around so powerfully!
But soon the stormy center passes by, The thunder and the lightning leave the sky, And leave behind the heavy stormy rain, That falls on friends avoiding it in vain, As all by now are thoroughly soaked through, But just the same are smiling now anew!
And as the rain begins to slow and fade, We see the brighter sky above displayed, The shimmer of the summer's shining sun, Breaks through the clouds as when it first begun, Clouds pass but still a gentle rain falls down, Like summer's final days that still surround.

Tale Seventy-Two: Hymn to Your Love What bliss and happiness to have your love, Hanali's kiss from Arvandor above, It brightens up the deepest, darkest days, It's warmer than the sun in summer rays, And as your love remakes and makes me whole, I sing the soaring song within my soul!
When you're with me I've never felt so free, The best in everything with you I see, Our bond began so unexpectedly, And rose to be this perfect part of me, A higher form of living you have shown, You woke me up from dreaming here alone!
Your calming presence shakes off my concerns, As when the sun in morning hours burns, And melts away the fog and morning mist, That blurs and blinds and ever would persist, Without the gentle glow of sun-shine's light, You light my way and lift me from the night!
But how much loss when you are long away, I feel a hole within me through the day, The darkened clouds come form there in my heart, A bleak and numbing rain begins to start, A bitter taste in everything I eat, The summer wine without you isn't sweet.
And how the ache is gone when you return! To see you near so soothes the aching burn, As cool water comes to thirsty lips, The thirst and pain the waters now eclipse, My life is light and what contentment then, Together now I am made whole again!
One day this mortal life of ours will end, And up to Arvandor we will ascend, But even then my love for you will last, And grow each day out of our pleasant past, So far removed from earthly pain and strife, In love that will transcend a mortal life!

Tale Seventy-Three: Prayer to Corellon Hei-Corellon shar-shelevu!
We praise you now Corellon, For all you guide us through, For all that makes us elven, We give our thanks to you!
We thank you for protection, Your strength defends us all, We thank you for your council, For guiding with your call!
We thank you for our trials, That help us change and grow, We thank you for defending, Against the foe below.
Help us see the beauty, In all that you create, Help us see the wisdom, Help us see our fate.
And let us listen calmly, When others disagree, The greatest strength we have is, Our elven unity!
So make us slow to anger, And slow to take offense, Remind us that our power, Is meant for our defense.
And smile down upon us, All gathered in your name, And let us celebrate you, Your glory we proclaim!

Tale Seventy-Four: Footsteps of the People The gentle rustle of the wild grass, Is climbing in crescendo as we pass, A dozen elves or more are moving by, In quiet rhythm under darkened sky, A calm advance with Azaquis in lead, Into the wild woods we all proceed!
A soothing feeling as we go along, That elven souls with each other belong, And here respectful of the nature round, Belong with all the wilds that surround, And as along the forest floor we roam, The wild nature seems to call us home.
We pass by falls of water falling down, That turns to mist before it hits the ground, The misty rain-drops glean in their decline, And cover all around in glistened shine, And smiling then with calm and closing eyes, The people lift their heads to humid skies!
We pass by ancient springs and meadows green, The sweetened flower scent soon fills the scene, The fragrant smells and gentle flower face, Brings fair Hanali to this peaceful place, And all the people think on what they've seen, And call to mind the sacred Seldarine!
And tales pass from storytellers then, Explaining how things long ago have been, Explaining all the lands that we now tread, Connecting us alive with those long dead, The words pass down the deeds of ancient elves, As though they could be teaching us themselves.
And winding out again into the wood, The calm procession passes as it should, Respectfully progressing through the trees, Their footsteps bend the grasses like a breeze, That sails gently by with quiet sound, And leaves the forest as it first was found.

Tale Seventy-Five: The City in Mystic Dream Today in reverie I saw The city in a dream, I saw the tree-leaves rustling I saw the waters gleam.
I saw the elven citizens About their daily chores, I saw the elven children too There playing out of doors.
But somehow things were different Than as they really were, And in the city in my dreams A change starts to occur.
Like sky reflected in the sea, The city had two sides, And mirrored from a center line To halves the town divides.
And in the sky above each half A sun comes into view, Two separate stars that guide each half As Winya splits in two.
And soon the suns with gravity Start pulling on their sides, Instead of all uniting back Apart the city slides.
But as the dream proceeded on Another change took place, A single sun arose above And shone with light and grace.
And drawing in divided sides It pulls together all, Uniting them in common cause And with a common call.
And slowly it restores the town The city's chasm mends, The citizens unite again And the division ends!
And then fair Winya thrived again Just like it used to do, With all the strength of unity The city's born anew!

*The third volume of the Book of Tales, with tales fifty-one through seventy-five, is published and made available in small numbers at Mr. Hill's Books, as well as delivered to the libraries in Cordor, Triumvir, and Winya Ravana* --------------------------------- Tale Seventy-Six: Lullaby The day begins to end in Winya fair, Cicadas chirp and sing in evening air, Exhaustion and nostalgia from the day, With weary souls begin to have their way, As all from work and road and where they've been, Tonight they find themselves at home again.
The sun goes drifting down behind the hills, And soon the air brings early autumn chills, The sky from blue turns orange and to red, The wind dies down and listens now instead, To all the quiet sounds of evening-time, To elves and nature here in gentle rhyme.
The hills and trees and towers Winya hides, Sweet safety here the Seldarine provides, And all the people here protect us now, Such calming comfort Winya's lands allow, Such peace at dusk does come and fill the place, And holds us all in evening-time's embrace.
Now smell the summer's evening in your nose, And feel the gentle summer breeze that blows, Let sounds of quiet peace come fill your ears, The silence that in night-time sure appears, And see the twinkle of the stary skies, Relax yourself and calmly close your eyes.
The world will be waiting here for you, When day returns and skies turn back to blue, But until day when summer sun still beams, Awake no more and dreaming precious dreams, I'll guard you here with warm and loving care, Until you rise up in the morning air.

Tale Seventy-Seven: Ash within the Flame The crimson flames leap up from fire bright, And flicker round and flash within the night, The fire burns, consuming firewood, Consuming what the wood had been for good, Consuming past and all that once has been, And never will it be the same again.
And in the light of fire's flicker flame, Some thoughts of my own distant past soon came, Of all that I have faced within my days, While wandering the many-winding ways, And all those days and possibilities, Have vanished like the ashes in the breeze.
I think about the paths in life we take, The many-meaninged choices that we make, And see how different my days could be, The dim and darkened days that I could see, Such struggles could be constantly in sight, Instead of that my days are filled with light!
How delicate are threads that fates will spin, How slight are all the life-paths that begin, So easily those early choices then, Could change forever how our lives have been, We all are just the sum of all our past, The choices in our life together massed.
I see my friends and how today they are, How sister Pilineth has come so far, From darker days and nights in painful past, The changes and the pains forever last, And though the memories persist life-long Still all the pain has made her ever strong.
And sister Nariel whose winding way, Has brought such pain that lasts up to today, The choices that she's forced to have endured, Beyond her shorter years she has matured, But happiness has trickled surely through, Through Thamian her live can start anew!
And Eil'ron too a harder road has crossed, Too quickly all her learning years were lost, The elven dreams she dreamed when still a youth, Obscured and lost as soon she learned the truth, But in the night of loss she found her light, In Khalreshaar she found such inner might!
Like cinders in the flame the past is gone, That burning change our lives have undergone, The fire and the pain we all go through, Has forged ourselves into somebody new, Like logs that turn to ash within the flame, After our past we'll never be the same.
The days that pass can never be regained, The dusty ash is all that has remained, But as the fire burns itself to death, Away I look and with a quickened breath, I lift my head up to the starry sky, And to the past I softly say good-bye.

Tale Seventy-Eight: The Fall of Yugo In darkened days of distant deadly past, The darker souls in Cordor town amassed, A time of danger rampant in the street, Where many souls a painful end did meet, Where evil men and women victims seek, Where fights broke out and strong oppressed the weak!
A swirling mess of evil it supports, And in this cauldron of the darkest sorts, There rose a vile evil presence there, Like darkened clouds oppressing from the air, That choke and clog and cloud all goodly minds, And always of their fate the dark reminds!
The evil was a huge beholder then, He had no fear of any mortal men, And standing by the temple openly, This evil creature plainly people see, For in these days of wild evils here, The vile Yugo had no cause to fear!
And as adventurers would walk nearby, At them with darkened magic he would fly, And murder goodly folk on a mere whim, With necromantic magic grave and grim, And with his brutal victory complete, He'd leave their corpses rotting in the street!
But darkened clouds can't cover light for long! Good souls will rise and fight against the wrong! And Feonir and Floriane then came, To fight the evil and the peace reclaim! The flower of their dancing skill in bloom, Would throw dark Yugo down into his tomb!
They made their plans and stood out in the street, And watched him there, no thought of their retreat, And when at last he struck against some soul, They sprang to action for their goodly goal! With all their skill, their timing, their control, They struck to settle Yugo's proper toll!
And one by one like lightning in the sky, That flashes here and there and draws the eye, Swift Floriane came striking from the dark, Her blades rise up in fast and flying arc, And as she draws attention from the foe, Out from the back good Feo swift would go!
And slowly wearing down the enemy, Their chance like lighted lamp they both did see, And as his magic wards began to fade, Their strikes struck in continual cascade! With each swift strike his evil deeds re-payed! At last the foe the goodly couple slayed!
And breaking through the darkened cloudy skies, The sun shines through to sorely wearied eyes! A shaft of light at first and then bright day, As Floriane and Feonir repay, The debt of justice for his evil crime, And cast his evil downward for all time!

Tale Seventy-Nine: Ael'thil's Flight The skywood rises high up to the clouds, The hidden elven places nature shrouds, And cousin Ael'thir walks with wind in mind, No more by land and earth to be confined, He sees the azure-blue and distant sky, And looking out once more prepares to fly!
He briefly closes eyes and smells the air, Of wind and weather soon he is aware, And with light movements and his easy grace, He steps out to the edge of the cliff face, And spreads his wings out wide to both his sides, And off into the sunny sky he glides!
At first he free-falls swift and quickly down, His eyes now open, staring to the ground, But soon his snow-white wings spread fully out, And splitting wind he lifts and turns about, And rises up in slow and circle curve, A stirring air-borne sight we all observe!
And as he soars up through the brightened skies, His feathers fold and flap as on he flies, His wings reach up and beat against the air, The passing breeze goes blowing through his hair, As slowly up into the sky he rose, And suddenly in swift descent he goes!
Then falling down he quickly picks up pace, The curving course once more he does retrace, And flying fast he nears us from afar, And sweeps up cliffs back up to where we are, With wings raised high in freedom all around, He comes back down to join us on the ground!
What joy to break the bonds that hold us back! To take to skies and trace that air-borne track! And flying high where we can never go, He shows our dreams to us awake below! We live in him a moment as he flies, Within our hearts we soar up in the skies!

Tale Eighty: Seeds of Life She touches darkened soil with her hand, Connecting living soul with living land, And with a simple pull she frees the earth, New life to bring into the land from birth, And in the clearing lays a single seed, And calls the water from which it will feed.
The trees and plants there planted all around, All started once as seeds within the ground, Some rose and lived and quickly after died, As nature fell and fairly does decide, And nature fair will judge us all some day, As this new seed in future faraway.
Oh how the land controls the life within! And sternly governs all that life has been, It touches all, permitting some to thrive, And keeps them here in happiness alive, And others other fates she has in store, To live under the summer sun no more.
We're born into this vast uncertain fate, For nature's judgement all of us await, The wild nature out in forests tall, Or civil nature that's within us all, Both natures govern all the seeds of life, To rise or fall in nature's constant strife.
But with her wisdom and her loving care, She tends the seed she softly planted there, With knowledge of the lands that here surround, She prays out to the nature all around, To let the seed come rise into the land, For Khalreshaar to guide her gentle hand.
And rising then with bare feet in the grass, Through forest paths away we slowly pass, And as the cycles turn and turn again, The tiny seed she kindly planted then, Begins to face its fate some gentle night, And slowly climbs its way up to the light!

Tale Eighty-One: Memories Sweet memories arise tonight to me, As Winyan moon-light glows down gracefully, My mind is taken to a distant night, So bathed like this in white and pale light, In hills above the Dale's gentle land, When soft and sweet you reached out for my hand.
What calm and happiness to look back then, And live those happy memories again, In safety of our courtship's caring course, The memories our courtship reinforce, The thought that through it all our love endures, My life like then today still joined with yours.
But back at the beginning all we were, Was new and delicate and so unsure, That nervousness and dim uncertainty, That all new lovers in beginnings see, Will all this last, will all collapse anew? Which one among us has not felt this too?
But in the moment of a new romance, How hearts with high uncertainty do dance! The thrill that as the cycles softly pass, Remembering this dream may never last, To focus and forget the future now, Together savor what the fates allow.
But what was so uncertain on that night, Has bloomed in time and now it shines so bright, That even now with time's assurances, Our time is sweeter than it ever was, With all the happiness our present sees, And all our past in pleasant memories.

Tale Eighty-Two: Cart Ride A trip to Cordor in the evening ends, And looking down the endless road-way bends, I feel the summer's hesitating heat, And take the chance to sit and rest my feet, And join the others hiring the cart, That crowd around before he can depart.
The farmer and the Cordor commoner, A distance from adventurers prefer, But sometimes some see opportunity, The gondolas, the Bendir bakery, And too the farmer carrying his crops, To pick up paying travelers he stops!
So climbing up onto the cart I find, I am with crops and other souls confined, The smell of fresh-cut hay perfumes the air, The smells of apples picked with patient care, The smells of all the travelers I see, The smell of pipe-smoke from the man near me.
He turns to me with young and pale face, And in his human voice with hurried pace, "I'm gonna strike it rich," he says to me, "In orcish caves great treasure I will see! The slow and boring farmer's life I'll flee! I'll see adventure, now at last I'm free!"
He's covered in some newly-purchased gear, But words and pipe-smoke scarcely mask his fear, The gamble that he makes impatiently, May cost him all the future he could see, Consuming all his time in one bright flash, Instead of peaceful days that long might last.
And as the cart went bouncing down the road, Around the farms the road-way curved and slowed, And all around the farmers toil on, They sleep in peace and rise up in the dawn, Hard work and little profit they will see, But living rich in safety happily.
The ox now slowly pulls us up the hill, And soon we see the top of Bendir's mill, So finally the tired ox now rests, The driver helps down all his paying guests, We feel that pleasant feel of stable ground, As other travelers start crowding round.
And then that human man waves back to me, He steels himself and turns south silently, And for a moment watching him I wait, And hope for him a safe and lucky fate, Then turning north the road again I roam, That takes me up to Winya and my home.

Tale Eighty-Three: Permanence and Passing Away from talking crowds and walking friends, The noise and the confusion quickly ends, And all the world wraps its arms around, Immortal still and silence sure surround, Our mortal things diminish then and fade, Compared to all that nature here has made.
The soft eternal blowing of the breeze, Comes slowly passing through the tallest trees, That breeze that blew before the elves were born, And blowing saw the mighty kingdoms formed, And blew on by as power passed to men, Still blowing by when kingdoms change again.
And passing by it takes the falling leaves, Their autumn-colors gently it receives, It sends them gently dancing to the grass, And though the season for the trees will pass, The mighty tree for years will still live on, And bloom again in spring-time's sunny dawn.
But older still the cliffs above the land, How ancient are they all and yet still stand, The lives of elves, the mortal men, the trees, Pass by in just a moment's blink for these, And long after mere generations pass, They still will stand and all our lives outlast.
And walking down the roads that we have made, With widened paths and sturdy pave-stones laid, We see already how they are reclaimed, Our works break down, the land won't long be tamed, The grasses grow and slowly crack the stone, In time the mighty road will be unknown.
The glories and ambitions in our mind, So quickly will be lost and left behind, The permanence of nature standing by, While passing mortal lives so quickly fly, And in these few short years after our birth, We all are merely strangers to this earth.

Tale Eighty-Four: Empty Classroom In Cordor garden all is quiet now, Return for birds the empty trees allow, The children who had filled the place before, Are walking home and learning here no more, The parents and the onlookers are gone, Refreshments and the chalkboard now withdrawn.
So soon before that stones must still be warm, Good Andrew here the children did inform, They with their parents filled the garden square, As Andrew taught them with the greatest care, Their focus captured with the greatest ease, As he unfolded reading's mysteries.
Their eyes light up at clever-worded jokes, With all the happy laughter he invokes, But sneaking in so sweet and subtly, He weaves the learning in so carefully, Like medicine that's hidden in a treat, That heals minds while mindlessly they eat.
And when the children come to understand, The new-learned letters newly in command, Their eyes light up, they smile happily, They comprehend the symbols that they see, Connecting with the voice that's in their thought, They truly learn the letters Andrew taught.
For next to life and health and happy lives, The gift of reading happiest arrives, Solutions from the past are read today, And with their light illuminate the way, And show a better path for all to see, And to all this good Andrew gives the key.
But after all the learning here that was, The thanks from grateful parents and applause, And after children's laugh and children's shout, Without a single coin from those without, Good Andrew leaves behind the garden's wall, No wealthier, but richest of them all.

Tale Eighty-Five: Desert Caravan The pilgrims and the wayfarers climb on, The camels and the carts at break of dawn, There's far to go to distant Hasrabet, But already the weather makes us sweat, And as the desert bakes under the sun, The desert caravan begins its run.
The trail of the animals and carts, Starts slowly climbing as the journey starts, And when we reach the ridge we quickly see, The vastness of the desert openly, The sands drift on like waves upon the sea, The heat like water shimmers distantly.
And like a ship upon this ocean dry, The caravan goes slowly sailing by, The rocking of the camels to and fro, Rocks like a ship as desert breezes blow, No sail up to catch them here on land, No prow to skim and plow into the sand.
And heat mirages dance in distant breeze, Of water and relief they always tease, Then suddenly some distant palms we see, And with them water in reality, Oasis waters gladly quench our thirst, Our dry and wasted weariness reverse.
Then as the desert sun goes falling down, And slips behind the distant desert ground, The moon comes out and bathes us in its light, So strangely comes the cool desert night, Extreme here even in extremity, As on we sail on the desert sea.
But shortly after torches flicker near, The buildings of Djedet to us appear, The caravan at last does slow and stop The travelers climb down from camel-top, And shaking sand from boots and shirt and vest, At last we walk to water's edge to rest.

Tale Eighty-Six: Hymn to Angharradh The People in the city passing by, All seem diverse, distinct to ear and eye, The warrior who wars with blade or bow, The wizard or the priest with magic's glow, The merchants or the craftsmen that we see, The commoner with common family.
They seem so very different, so opposed, As down the paths of life each person goes, And sometimes they will feud and disagree, Sometimes another's truth they cannot see, But while each one may hear a different call, The People's strength depends upon them all.
Some elves will wander wide and winding ways, They cannot bear to linger many days, And following the wind that Aerdrie sends, They travel far, their journey never ends, On wing or foot they most of all are free, A life of distant beauty they will see.
Some elves will follow cryptic, mystic fates, The mysteries that Sehanine creates, Revealed under night-time's moon-lit sky, Her moon-light shows things hidden from the eye, And contemplating visions and their dreams, They see that life is more than it now seems.
And others live for beauty and for love, That fair Hanali sends from high above, While love will sometimes seem a silly thing, All living souls do love and lovers bring, The sternest stoic warriors we know Were born from love and beauty long ago.
The wanderers, the mystics of the night, The lovers and the children of the light, The soldiers and the hunters who protect, The druids and the nature they respect, The city thrives from its diversity, It thrives just like the One within the Three.
So let us praise your many-natured grace, The Seldarine's diversity embrace, Three sides, extremes, but all of the same whole, Diverse yet working for a common goal, So let the people of the city too, Unite to lift our praises up to you!

Tale Eighty-Seven: Attack on the Salandran Temple As Summer's final storms pass overhead, There comes a feeling of the darkest dread, To Tana and myself there at the shrine, As Elle runs up our gazes fast incline, She tells of grizzly horror at her back, Salandra's temple is under attack!
We quickly run to Kampo's by the shore, But ferry ships wont sail anymore, For fear of all the evil they have seen, The tell to us the terror-stricken scene, But finally a final trip they make, And grimly the familiar path they take...
And as the temple grounds come into view, The darkened dread we start to feel anew, It rises like the roar as thunder nears, As sounds of darkest terror fill our ears, At last the boat comes gliding up to land, And leaves again as soon as we can stand!
We hear the story near the temple door, A patient had been brought a bit before, He carried some malicious malady, That passed to other patients suddenly, And as the evil curse so quickly spread, The ward was filled with hideous undead!
Lord Yaston and some others had arrived, And charged on in to see who had survived, But countless undead made a swift attack, And as they fled to make it safely back, Lord Yaston fell, his body lost behind, With all the victims and undead confined!
The templars in their terror blocked the door, And would permit no rescues any more, The braver souls demanded to go in, To fight the evil festering within, But as the templars long denied their call, The foes within strike out, the templars fall!
And as I flee behind the knightly crowd, Sir Robert takes command and calls aloud, He rallies all to calm and courage now, Composure in the fear his words allow, And as the door breaks open from within, He rallies all the group and charges in!
And as the knights into the temple fill, The scene inside brings terror's icy chill, The cries of the undead from down the way, The bodies of the clergy on display, The stench of evil ichor all around, The horror and carnage on the ground!
And then the undead come in swift attack! So many that it seems a sea of black! But like the sea-waves crash against the rock, The goodly knights withstand the sudden shock, "Give them no quarter!" Robert clearly shouts, His brave composure drowns out any doubts!
I watch in awe as knights fight endless foes, Each knight the pinnacle of prowess shows, With sword and steel, with axe and magic spell, The black and vile enemies they fell, New fortitude their leader's shouts instill, Fatigue and fear no match for stalwart will!
And as the group slow makes it's way within, Their darkest trials of they night begin, As rising from the blackened ichor here, A huge and dire form starts to appear, A massive creature fills the massive room, And fills our hearts with horror and with gloom!
But leading all the goodly fighters back, Sir Robert rallies all to the attack! And striking against blackened ichor form, The knights and goodly fighters round it swarm, Their spells lash out and flicker with their light! Their swords rise up and fall with practiced might!
And as exhaustion nearly takes them all, At last the giant foe begins to fall, But as it tumbles down onto the ground, A swarm of ichor ghostly foes surround, But even now the strongest ichor ghost, Not long can fight against the knightly host!
And as they fall back into ichor's mass, At last the foes into the darkness pass, And Aylomen comes up to chant his spell, The evil ichor's power to expel, And with the evil finally suppressed, The knights collapse and find a bit of rest!
Then in the mass of victims on the ground, Lord Yaston's broken body there is found, They call his goodly soul back from the planes, They treat his wounds, his health he slow regains, But as the search for living souls resumes, We hear some noises from the storage rooms...
And summoning their last remaining might, They break the door and see a welcome sight, Survivors that had made their way below, And slowly wearied knights among them go, All traumatized by what they had been through, But still relieved as knights come into view.
And as they all make way to open air, They see the morning sun come rising there, A sight that all thought they would never see, But by the knights resolve and bravery, The few survivors live another day, The evil ichor once more kept at bay!

Tale Eighty-Eight: Autumn's Return Within the heat of Summer's hottest days, Its brightest light the scorching sun displays, The longest day-light and the shortest nights, A lazy day the Summer sure invites, Full days by lake-side shores we all would spend, Back then it seemed those days would never end.
But as the day turns sure into the night, The so time brings changing seasons into sight, And with them change our rhythms and our ways, No more to live those lazy Summer days, But time to train and trek and work and learn, Before our lazy Summer will return.
But Autumns coming too brings happiness, No more does heat's oppression on us press, The wind that was such needed solace then, Now brings a pleasant chill to us again, That calming, cooling touch of Autumn's breeze, That brings relief, our sweat and burdens ease.
And though the trees no more are verdant green, They change into a changing Autumn scene, At first the leaves start edging into brown, But then show Autumn's colors all around, The reds and yellows slowly come to view, Familiar sights the Autumn paints anew.
And soon the wind brings wood-smoke's calming smell, That whispers soft that families are well, And burning safe within their warming home, The fire beckons them as round they roam, It promises warm food when they arrive, Work-weary spirits it will soon revive.
The days grow short and nights start gaining ground, And soon the snow will come and all surround, But sooner will fair Autumn's colors shine, The green into bright colors will decline, The cool with the summer's heat withdrawn, As time goes spinning ever, ever on.

Tale Eighty-Nine: Street Minstrel The skies in Cordor now are overcast, The crowds in Cordor square today are massed, And in the blur of voices all around, A minstrel comes and plays a festive sound, His smile as he plays begins to spread, As people start to smile back ahead!
He plays the happy chords upon the lute, He taps the street in rhythm with his boot, And smiles as some children gather round, They jump about and dance upon the ground, And laugh so carelessly as children do, It brings their smiling parents into view!
The passers-by along the streets still go, And pass as water down a river's flow, But some will smile as they go along, And some will pause and stop to hear the song, And join the little crowds that here convene, A simple pleasure in their day's routine!
A group of knights in armor passes by, Their shining armor dimmed by cloudy sky, And as the music catches knightly ear, One from their number slows a bit to hear, And slightly softens up his stoic face Before rejoining them with quickened pace!
Then passing next, a pair of married hin, And to their aging faces comes a grin, One reaching out his hand now to his wife, They dance around as in their younger life, The flower of romance the dance allows, And ending now each smiles wide and bows!
The merchants in the square are trading wares, But when they get a break from merchant cares, They smile and they listen with the crowd, The government officials tall and proud, The families that in the plaza stand, The homeless with their bottles in their hand!
But then the rain-clouds gave their rain at last, And then the crowd to indoor places passed, The minstrel stops, a smile on his face, And placing his worn lute into its case, He ties his pack and shoulders all the load, And starts again on down the winding road!

Tale Ninety: Soul Passing They come in solemn waves at solemn pace, Their nervousness and and grief upon their face, The young, the old, the relatives and friends, The crowd their aged relative attends, To him their memories and love extends, As life for their dear grand-father now ends.
And when he still was young some distant day, His world and his wisdom stripped away, So many paths of life before him lie, So many short-lived paths to draw his eye, How fragile are the choices we select, The choices that from then to now connect.
But now the mark of choices chosen right, Is family and friends still in his sight, The faces face him friendly now and fond, Each one connected with a life-long bond, And he becomes a part of their life too, Together watching life go passing through.
And all of this is all that's on his mind, And on the minds of loved-ones too in kind, A final time his gaze around them goes, Then slowly now his eyes begin to close, The bonds he built are severed in the end, From life to death his soul starts to transcend.
And as fair Sehanine comes gently down, To pull his rising soul from mortal ground, A gentle hand extends to guide him on, To lead him on to ever-rising dawn, To Arvandor, Corellon's smiling face, And there to take eternal, well-earned place.

Tale Ninety-One: Autumn Colors The Autumn air brought wood-smoke to the nose, The gentle smoke above the tree-tops rose, And following the smoke with wistful eyes, The trees in Autumn colors fill the skies, Such colors bright and brilliant all can see, As nature paints with pure complexity.
The aspen tree with tall and pointed top, Its heart-shaped leaves their verdant color swap, Instead their snow-white trunks are topped in gold, A honey-yellow hue the leaves unfold, So bright that bright Hanali surely laughs, To see the golden hearts that nature crafts.
And oak-trees rising strong and stout nearby, In Autumn air their acorns they supply, The acorns sweet below, but over-head, Their curving leaves are caped in crimson red, With colors rich and deep they are ablaze, That flickers like a flame in Autumn days.
But bold and brighter still the dogwood thrives, Its royal purple in the fall arrives, And like the crown upon a coronal, Its purple flowers bloom within the Fall, When all the forest falls to slumber soon, The dogwood trees are bright in brilliant bloom.
And pine trees lost within the Summer scene, In Autumn are distinguished by their green, The contrast calls to light their Winter worth, As all their needles never fall to earth, Their steady color never in exchange, As days go by and all the seasons change.
But as the other leaves come falling down, Their rains of colors all of us surround, And slowly twisting, turning in the air, All diving, dancing now without a care, As if the leaves were solemnly aware, That as they fall the branch will soon be bare.

Tale Ninety-Two: The Nature of a Child What makes the nature that the fates bestow? Does nature change our children as they grow? Do gods above send all this down below? Or parents and what books and learning show? Some goodly parents goodly natures know, But children turn out evil even though.
The king that gained his kingdom on his own, Through all the skill and justice that was shown, Sometimes has sons that learn all he has known, But turn out bad when they are fully grown, His hardships made him just but him alone, And soon his sons' injustice has the throne.
But sometimes parents live life evilly, As far from honesty as they can be, And yet their child grows up properly, She sees the justice that they couldn't see, She lives her life for good and peacefully, From all their pain and suffering she's free.
All children loving parents do adore, They wonder what their children have in store, They want them to achieve what's theirs and more, To overcome the pain they've faced before, To freely find the world to explore, To never have to suffer anymore.
I face these questions for myself today, How I can show my daughter the right way? To keep the world's evil far away, To live a life of good and not to stray, When she in childhood no more can stay, And lives her life alone some distant day...

Tale Ninety-Three: Horizon We two are sitting, watching, still awake, As moonlight dances on our crystal lake, And twinkles on the wake like starry skies, Two skies of stars reflected in our eyes, The gentle light embraces mildly, And casts in silver all that we can see.
I look to the horizon in the night, The stars above and under in my sight, And wonder who is watching in this way, Some other lovers watching far away, Who see this starry sky from distant lands, Embraced by light and softly holding hands.
You too came from a place that's far away, Perhaps your fate would hold you there to stay, Another life for you would lie in store, You'd never sail to my distant shore, And I alone would live my lonely life, And never know you as my cherished wife.
But from that place beyond horizon's bounds, Your path through life soon led you to these grounds, And here Hanali's grace led us to meet, My weary wanderings were then complete, For when we met my life could truly start, I came to life with you within my heart.
And all this dances in my mind and eye, With you beside me under night-time sky. Each time horizon's distant span I see, I think again how much you mean to me, And pray in thanks to Arvandor above, And know how blessed I am to have your love.

Tale Ninety-Four: New Eyes As raftsmen gently guide their craft upstream, The Nexus Falls appear as in a dream, Where daily worries quickly fade away, And only nature's grace and grandeurs stay, The rolling roar of waterfalls surrounds, The gentle green of sacred elven grounds.
These sights so stirred me when I was a boy, The sound and scene would fill me up with joy, Imagination's greatest venue here, Where hours passed and day dreams would appear, And all was beautiful to younger eyes, The falls so tall they poured out from the skies.
But passing by the Nexus every day, The majesty is dulled and fades to grey, Like city sounds that seemed so loud at first, Now bring no notice to our ears immersed, As wine so stout and strong some early day, Now barely numbs the mind and slips away.
Yet when some elf from far and distant lands, First sees the beauty that the place commands, And speechlessly their eyes fall open wide, It moves us too and fills us up with pride, We see what beauty passed from memory, And with new eyes we once again can see.
If only good would never pass away, And in our minds and eyes forever stay, To never dull and dim that brilliant light, That filled us too with wonder at the sight, Before by contact we became immune, And beauty faded to routine too soon...

Tale Ninety-Five: Own A work of art, no matter what the kind, Is such a sample of the artist's mind, Where all their thought, emotions, hours long, Have come to life and in this now belong, Which out of work and vision slow has grown, And now complete, it seems the artist's own.
But later when the public comes along, And sees the artist's paints or words or song, They see the work with their own eye and mind, New meaning to the work is then assigned, Unique to all to whom the art is shown, The public feels the work is now their own.
And talking to the maker of the art, The viewer shares the meaning in their heart, But to the artist this is just not right, This isn't why the work was brought to light, This isn't the creation that they've known, This new interpretation's not their own.
For art is not the paint or written word, Or merely sounds that changelessly are heard, The art is the experience it gives, The meaning that within the patron lives, The seeds of change and insight that are sown, That makes the art the audience's own.
Each word I write has meaning deep to me, But every reader reads them differently, The sound, the theme, emotions deep within, Are not the same as once they may have been, The words belong no more to me alone, No more is all their meaning just my own.

Tale Ninety-Six: First Snow The Winyan morning rises crisp and cold, The sun lifts up and lightens night-time's hold, But seems so far away as Autumn ends, Too far from us for all the heat it sends, And in the absence left by heat's retreat, The chilly cool weather can compete.
And soon the thick grey clouds come into view, So over-cast that light cannot break through, The day is dimmed and softened all around, And with the light the season muffles sound, Then everything is cloaked in calm and greys, As night-time lingers into shorter days.
And in the hush all movement seems to slow, As in a theater before the show, Anticipation unexpectedly, Comes creeping in and clutches all who see, The air seems thick and active in delay, All somehow know that something's underway.
Then one-by-one the snow-flakes start to fall, So slow at first, each delicate and small, But as the early snow-flakes end their course, So many more fall from their skyward source, Until the sky is bleached in white cascade, That fills the air in silent serenade.
And as the snow-fall starts to settle in, Routines go slowly back to how they've been, Contemplative and calm from falling snow, A peace to people snows somehow bestow, A feeling that no matter where we roam, A welcome, warm return awaits at home.

Tale Ninety-Seven: Dicho's Sacrifice Foul Darkhold still holds darkness deep within, Where many brave adventurers have been, And hosts an evil princess foul in form, Where hosts of heroes bravely, daily swarm, But once there was an evil far below, Which threatened all the island long ago.
For many portals lurk to many planes, But one to demon lands the hold contains, Where demon armies lurk behind the gate, For dark destruction all of them await, But once the seal there began to fade, And demon forces started to invade!
Around the island demons wandered free, And everywhere brought pain and misery, Among the fighting and the many dead, Some rumors of the Darkhold seal spread, And goodly people gathered swiftly then, To seal up the portal once again!
They learned that Bendir Dale's hills contained, A crystal through which passage could be gained, To Darkhold's demon portal far below, And through the darkened passages they go, And in the darkness fought the enemy, Until at last the seal they could see.
But in the notes they found within the room, They learned that to escape the demon doom, The seal there would have to be remade, But all the seal's power had decayed, And so before the island would be lost, A mortal soul was needed as the cost.
The bravery that all the heroes showed, In fighting demons on their darkened road, Compared to this was such a lesser price, So much to give, so much to sacrifice, While limitless excuses there were said, The druid Dicho calmly stepped ahead.
And with the thought of all he loved in mind, He moved ahead and left his fear behind, And valuing the safety of us all, Above his life he answered duty's call, He made the choice that few of us could make, And soon the ritual his life did take.
And with his sacrifice the seal held, The darkness passed, the demon threat was quelled, And in this future that good Dicho bought, We live the future now that he cannot, For all our lives to live he gave us his, A hero in the highest sense there is!

Tale Ninety-Eight: The Light of Civilization
In ancient times there was a purity, When life was new and grew on sluggishly, In times of darkness when creators passed, When all the races that are now amassed, Began to live and function on their own, Progressing on what little then was known.
And in this age of darkness there were those, Who with ideas out of darkness rose, Who with mistakes and trials somehow found, The simple things that bettered all around, And like a tiny light so frailly, Begins illuminating all who see.
With excellence or chance still others rise, To bring the light to darkness-wearied eyes, From single voice to symphony in turn, The pace picks up as new-lit fires burn, And seeing, new-found numbers gather might, To lead us all out from the mindless night.
Until at last the fires burn so much, That all alive can somehow feel their touch, The civilizing flame that feeds us all, That guides the innovators with its call, To come and show us all a better day, To come illuminate for us the way.
The march of time is measured not in bounds, But in the steps away from common grounds, The daring deed that breaks apart the mold, That makes us question views that now we hold, That lights up fires never lit before, And keeps us all advancing ever more.

Tale Ninety-Nine: Wintersong The Pine-tree and poinsettia patiently Still paint their red and green, In window-sill and woods beside the road Against the snow-white scene.
While winter hares the foxes follow still Past squirrels in the trees, But other life left south or stilly sleeps Away from bitter breeze.
And resting too for us is somehow sweet With winter's chill outside, The bed a bundle of that precious warmth, Like orange fire-side.
Then rising up our comfy clothes are filled With fluffy fleece so light, That mirrors snow-flakes' delicate descent So feather-weight in flight.
And looking back when leaving comfy homes The wood-smoke rises gray, As white on winter's whiter, slower skies And drifts like slower days.
And outside all is white and quiet round A canvas fresh below, To paint the winter wanderings we make With foot-steps on the snow.
