I have spent the last 2 hours researching and trying to find various information I feel is needed before starting my character. I found alot of great information on the forums that has really helped but what Im struggling to find is..

A Good monk build. (unarmed, Without dramatic multi-classes.) Im not a very good builder myself but I had someone make me a build years back for another server, I can't find it now but it was dex based which worked well for me.

On the lore side of the topic subject I wasn't sure about something, I want to start with a monk build but I wish to roleplay it as training in Martial Arts until level 9 when he achieves his Ki, this will then open up for more exploring on what that means and plan on him entering an order thus being a Monk.. Would this be okay to play? The idea is he will have an understanding on the philosophies and teachings but would not consider himself a monk until he takes on a master or joins an order.

If not, could someone please point me in the direction of Lore based info on other area's in Forgotten Realms that monks from different orders belong that I can use as a background story for my character travelling over to Amia.

I'd have posted this in the seperate build/lore threads but my question about how I wish to play the monk (I thought) made it more a general discussion/help a n00b out but don't crush him with your hammers post! :)

Here is where you want to look first. Read the first post and go from there.

I won't worry about a build. You can get some help with that in the build thread.

Monk Orders?

Here is a basic list of some monk orders:
http://amiawiki.shatuga.com/index.php/M ... s_by_Deity

Does your character concept have a deity pencilled in? That might be a place to start. You could also look your alignment if you need to. Most Monk Orders are associated to churches of particular religions.

The most notable exceptions are the Old Order and the Order of the Long Death, which are fairly generic blank slate orders. The former are the philosphical type, the latter obsessed with death, but they dont have as much depth in lore as the orders detailed in the link above, which can usually be tracked down to specific monastaries in specific places if you dig deeply enough.

If you can find something you like the look of, I'd recommend going to http://www.nj-pbem.com/data/Gods/Gods.htm for a bit more detail.

There are also a couple of monastaries in the Amia gameworld, but if you're coming from somewhere far flung, you wouldn't know about those. You can find out about them ICly, when you start playing your guy.

Edit: This is probably a better list: http://nwn2.wikia.com/wiki/Monk_orders

Thanks! I had in mind going with the Old Order as I wish to play my character LN but ICly I was anticipating anything to happen and whether he discovers a different order through RP or what not, Ideally this could work if I was allowed to play the monk class as not fully ordained as a monk until LVL 9/10 where he gains his Ki powers then or on acceptance of an order gains them at least.

Even the thought of having the monk create his own views and philosophies is very appealing and through them and his training In martial arts and his aim to be as one with both mind and body he gains Ki powers through that.

I read an interesting topic that was dated a few months back that gave very different and open idea's to how monks were played so I guess I want to clarify what's okay and what's not rather than find out and have to scrap/re-do him IG.

Like I said, the Old Order is a blank slate.

Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting wrote:
Monks of the Old Order do not worship any deity, but are devoted to the philosophy espoused by a deity who is either now dead or has never existed on the material plane of Toril. The monks contradict themselves on this point, but the deity's identity isn't important to them, it's the message they care about. The Old Order never has huge monasteries, but has spread widely through Faerun.

The point being is that no message is suggested to the player. You are free to make up your own. If that is some sort of Ki thing, thats your call. You can be from wherever you want, too.

I suppose the only issue is, if there is some other Old Order player who has brought a different message. Nature of multiplayer, really. But that could always be explained as being from a different monastary, and could result in some nice yin/yang rivalry, perhaps!

...But youre alright, I think. Theres not much that would force a character like this to be scrapped.

Don't worry about the semantics of what you call yourself, either.

There's nothing wrong with saying a Level 4 Monk is not a monk but "Learning to be a Monk". Not an issue. You can call him whatever you like. A Disciple, Apprentice, whatever. I think it's pretty cool to have that sense of weakness (later accomplishment), personally.

....Gods, I'm spamming this thread so hard. Ashamed.
