I remember seeing a post asking the same thing a year or two back, but I can't find it via searching. If someone -can- find it, that would be great, but posts and opinions are always welcome!

Basically, what is the limit of technology in Amia? What's the current level of machinary, inventions and whatnot? After paying a visit to the Svirfneblin Factory it would seem we have gears and clockwork-type devices, but how much can we use of these?

Of course, magic/machinary hybrids are also on the table!

A few particulars would be;

1) Watches.

2) Lenses (Such as ones used for inspecting diamonds and gems, small eye-glasses)

3) Robotics. Rather than golems which are (As far as I know) mostly hunks of metal infused with magic. I know we have the Clockwork Horror, but can that be implemented on a smaller, or larger scale? Obviously I don't expect something with zero magical influence, but perhaps a clockwork golem?

4) And, as my only little Discworld fantasy; A music player? Some box, or similar device capable of playing back a short, poor quality sound?

Obviously there are more than these, but they're all I can come up with at the moment!

Well there has been a character on for some time at some point who's body was partly replaced by clockwork... If you ask me that went way to far... But its not my call.

I'm not thinking to make a kind of human/golem hybrid. Merely toying with the idea of a tinkerer, or inventor.

A competent gnome can replicate all these types of things for you. As usual any inevitable resultant destruction is entirely your own fault, as per the standard Lantan manufacturing disclaimer.

1) Yes (Not common, as many still rely on sun dials.)

2) Yes

3) There have been clockworks, but I don't believe they're within the grasp of most PCs.

4) ... Not sure. I don't think anything has been developed along those lines. No record players, though.

1. I'm pretty sure that one is a yes.

2. I'm positive that one is a yes.

3. That one is a bit touchy. Robotics are pretty advanced. Make requests for your ideas.

4. If there are music players, I'd imagine it would only be in the form of Music rolls/Piano rolls and that's about the extent of it. I don't know though.

If watches are a no, then one particular item shouldn't exist.

Watches are a definite yes. I requested one for Nevaeh. They're not common but they're around. Tick tick tickity. ;)

Yes

Obviously I don't expect something with zero magical influence, but perhaps a clockwork golem? This ones interesting. I'm not sure what the offical line is from the team, but I personally can always see a steam powered golemn built by those nutty gnomes existing. Course they could never tell you how it works, not knowing themselves.

Also with the clockwork thing. Personally I'd probably never let someone get away with clockwork limbs again, but clockwork powered devices, such as gauntelts, gloves, arm braces or even what my character John is attempting to do with his craft trap knowledge, a clockwork powered crossbow.

4) And, as my only little Discworld fantasy; A music player? Some box, or similar device capable of playing back a short, poor quality sound? Music Boxes exist, not music players however, if so its using magic and not technology. Their are cantrips which allow you to store sounds and play them at will, with a permancey spell its entirely likely to exist.

The main thing about Amia is that most forms of technology don't exist because the place is so saturated in magic. Magic replaces a lot of technology. There's simply no need for the worlds brightest minds to make stuff because most of those minds go into the field of magic, and they simply learn to cast spell which do the equlivent.

It sounds like, with a high enough intelligence, a good deal of points in Craft skills, and solid, supervised Roleplay to back it up a few things may be invented. Would such a character need a strong magical background, or would a more tinkerer style character, with points in the Craft skills and UMD be able to do these things?

I did a search for "Technology" and "Inventions" through the forums, but got nadda. If you could give mew a few key words that'd come up with better results, that'd be great, but the answers here have already been helpful enough for me to put my green hat on.

1) Watches.
Watches most certainly exist, as do other clockwork/gearwork devices.

2) Lenses (Such as ones used for inspecting diamonds and gems, small eye-glasses)
Another yes. I'm assuming you mean a jeweler's eyepiece here.

Clockwork/gearwork golems do exist on Amia, and they do have magical influence. I can think of a few places that have clockworks in them, aside from the summonable clockwork horror.

4) And, as my only little Discworld fantasy; A music player? Some box, or similar device capable of playing back a short, poor quality sound?
Don't see why not. Thought it'd probably be either small, highly magical, and very expensive, or large, clunky, and mechanical. And if gnomish, prone to explode occasionally when used..

A music box is actually a fairly simple device. If clocks exist good quality music boxes could too. They'll never compete with a bard though, they lack the range and diversity of sound.

I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing a 16th century music box half a year ago. It was quite simple in design but the quality of the notes exceded anything I've heard produced digitally by a long shot. Definately master smith work though.

Aren't clockwork horrors, just the same as other constructs (Aside from the world-destroying mining)?

As in, they're not -really- clockwork - they're just materials infused with magic enough to be 'alive'. Like any other construct.

Technology is just magic in disguise!

In PnP, to cast a permanent (de-buffable) "Animate Object" spell a character would need 14 caster levels. If I were to make someone who could make his own watches, or small petty golems, would this be something I'd need to have? Or are there exceptions when it is as simple as making a small cog turn?

There are a myriad of methods to achieve the same or similar functions.

Casting Animate Object on a watch wouldn't make a watch keep time, it would make the face roll around on its side and try to stab people with its minute hand.

If you want to make a watch, there's no magic to it. Its just skill. Maybe there's something in the job system...Engineer? Jeweler? I dunno.

Assassin Watch?

Anyway, my questions have been answered! So I'm happy for this to be locked, should a DM feel the need to.
