Okay, I was looking to improve some new armor I made by mythal crafting. I saw that what I had been planning to add, in this case damage resistance (not reduction), required a divine mythal for even the tiniest bit of resistance. Am I reading the chart right, and if I am why does it require a divine mythal for resistance? Reduction I can understand, but resistance?

Resistance doesnt have a way to bypass it like damage reduction, for example, if someone has damage reduction +4 5/-, then when hit with a plain weapon, they absorb 5 physical damage, but if someone has a +4 enhancement or attack bonus on their weapon or better, then that 5 physical damage is bypassed and they take full damage.
For resistance, if someone has 5/- cold resistance, tieflings for example, and someone has 1d6 cold damage on their weapon, that 5 cold damage will be absorbed regardless of the attack or enhancement on the weapon, so 5/- cold resist, at best they could take 1 cold dmg from that weapon (barring crits for the example) and thats only if the cold damage roll is a 6. That is why divine mythals are all that give resistance.
*edit*
Needed to edit to add something, to make sure I dont step on any DM toes or such, but this is why -I- think its on divine mythal instead of other mythals. The DM team may have decided for some other reason entirely.

I suspect it's a historical oddity we never did anything about because the random shops like Azizi or the Thay dude make elemental DR so easy and flexible to obtain.

What resistances does the divine mythal give? Afaik, the shop dudes mentioned above only give Fire/Cold/Acid/Elec/Neg/Sonic anywhere between 5-15.

It gives 5/- damage resistance of any type except Magical, Divine and Positive.

Yep. Not that those damage resistances are hard to find on items, but you always seem to have it in the slot which you want to put something else in.

It's so incredibly rare anyway, I think the only thing worth burning a divine for are the on-hit powers. The resistances should be moved to the huge mythal region.

Okay, now that it has been explained it makes more sense. All this time I thought reduction was better than resistance... Man oh man.... I'm gonna need two divines and one greater to add the buffs I want to that cold iron armor I made... trying to give it the same bonuses that the armor called "The Keeper" has... +4 armor bonus, resist 10 electricity, resist 10 acid. Looks like I will only be able to give it resist 5, but that is okay. It's justa gonna take a while... a long while.

Well don't hold your breath for those divines. 99% of players don't get to see one

Divine mythals are one of the rarest items in the game, so as Dramatic prince said....

Well, it is because they only come from DMs and there isn't always a DMly opportunity to throw down a 100 pound piece of solid weave.
I didn't make the system, I'm only constrained by it!

I had one once, when they first came out. I sold it for 100,000 as nobody had any idea what kind of value these things held at the time *Sigh*

I've only ever seen one Divine Mythal and it was at the end of a DM quest thing...the whole thing ended up one big PvP-fest to try and take the mythal. Good thing my character was dead already. Good times. I'll pay DCs for a Divine Mythal equivalent power before I ever get involved in something like that again.

During the most memorable event that I've been apart of (memorable in my mind), my character Daishar ended up with a Divine mythal. It was a lot of fun, and I rather enjoyed seeing a spirit of benwick's hallow drop Qirlan... then watch the spirit kill another person who tried to take the divine mythal. Got to love dragon greed, trading the cursed gem from the benwicks sword, for a divine mythal.

Sounds like 2 people took it as more than the simple IC that it was.

I dunno. My black-kin would rip someone's face off for a Divine, while I have like...zero impetus to craft, I'm -just- learning the system while Irae craft's my bf's gear NOW. XD After what, 3 years here?

I was looking again at the mythal crafting chart and I noticed something odd. Damage Resistance 15/- takes up two power slots and Damage Resistance 20/- or higher (does it even go higher than 20) requires four power slots. Yet to even get Damage Resistance 5/- requires a divine mythal which is only dropped at the choice of a DM. Does this strike anybody else as odd?

Only thing I can think of is that it is a guide for when an item already has those levels of DR, so you know if/what you can add to it.
Or not?
