My reason for bringing up Bios is that there are some essential details to characters that cannot be as easily reflected in NWN.

Example: It'd take someone who's completely non-perceptive in a RL situation to notice Tuomas' entire body has permanent burn scarring and that he has tattoos which glow softly on his throat and wrists.

*because of their nature and use in his spells I traditionally imply they're showing openly, thus the persistent need for them in his description*

Well I imagine that's something you take the initiative to note, then. It boils down to what's relevant about your character. I sometimes make it a point not to have anything physically remarkable about my characters. It would be completely unfitting for such a character to have a physical description in the bio.

A lot of noise is being made about a pretty hypothetical problem, IMO.

I am beginning to think this thread is simply about making noise, period. It seems to only be a rant/request from Khy as players can still say "Yea, umm, no. I'm doing things this way." with 0 consequence.

I'm not sure what you mean, with that or your previous posts. Do you think it's alright to keep doing this if the ruling isn't added to the journal? Do you think it's alright to refuse RP (such as describing your character, when relevant) unless it's specifically prohibited somewhere? Common Sense is a rule here, and ignorance is no excuse. You can take the risk of doing borderline acceptable things, but you can only blame yourself when you're smacked for it.

Bios tie into Khy's request, completely.

What happens when I want to describe someone in detail, who doesn't have any bio at all and doesn't want to tell me anything about their character, but rather puts out this BS of "How tall did they seem?".

"Hey, my PC wants to put up a wanted poster for your PC. You didn't have a bio, and you were wearing flat-black from head to toe(I already have that in his description on the poster), but would you mind giving me some basic info like his height and sound of his voice? Or maybe skin color, as you did mention he wrinkled his face under his hood"
"Well what did he appear like?"
"Um... I don't know. We talked for 4 minutes without you RPing a type of voice inflection. Could you just tell me about how tall he is, or his body type?"
"Well how tall did he seem."
"How the fuck should I know, he looked exactly as tall as me, buy this PC is 6'5. Fine, dude, whatever, could you at least tell me what his hair color was, I distinctly remember you saying *flicks his hair in front of his face before speaking*."
"Did he seem like a blond, a brunette or a redhead?"
"FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-"

@Iron:
Personally do I? Nope.
But:
We play on a server large enough where others think that it is perfectly fine. Explain to me how can people get smacked if there isn't a rule being broken.

Cut the crap with the common sense bologna. Common sense is not as "common" as folks wish to believe. It varies from person to person, and Amia boasts a lot of people. It is ignorant to believe that all the others that play a game will comply to the same 'sense' as yourself. That goes for all of us. You are a smart guy so you should know that by now. To say "common sense" is the rule, leaves it open to interpretation by all, including the players. What sort of bite are folks looking at for not complying or conforming to what equates to a yes/no question? It is far from ignorant as anybody half awake and able to read the rules can tell you: No server rules/policies are breached in their refusal, in this case. So why should they care? You've said it yourself that you don't care so what makes you believe others must?

Bottom line is that without a rule to hold folks to nothing will change. Without structure, the jelly filling can go anywhere and do anything, even ignore a request and the sense most of us would wish was truly "common" and suffer nothing from it.

"Common Sense" is ambigious of course, but it's fair to assume that people can with reasonable probability and by erring on the side of caution usually stay within its parametres. The ultimate arbiters are the DMs, and you're the one responsible for staying on their "good side." So basically, if your idea of common sense deviates so much from the DMs' that you can't avoid getting into trouble, tough luck. But most people from our cultural frame of reference will have little trouble if their intentions are sincere. It's ambigious, but it doesn't matter.

So basically: Do nothing about it, play as I see fit, leave the DMs to do their jobs and watch as this thread eventually either fades or gets locked. Then twirl the thumbs and observe as everything inevitably reverts to how things had been (after a grace period of maybe a few weeks to a month) until it gets gradually worse to the point that someone decides to resurrect this thread/topic the same as they do with other rant/cans of worms threads and continue the cycle?

Personally I'd rather see a solid, lasting change.

I have to agree with Dust.

If this is indeed a concern of the DMs more as a whole, a rule should be implemented (admittedly any rule implemented would be difficult to enforce, but if a Rule's in palce, the DM's have the ground to act more readily when evidence is provided)

What would happen then, if someone posted a screenshot of the character in their IC post (no glowy highlight, and no floaty name) and asked people to look for a character who looked like that?

You could argue that a screenshot is a bit cheaty because it relates information about the subject far more effectively than words. On the other hand, it doesn't provide many of the details that you would see if you had actually taken the time to observe the character and glean that information. It doesn't help to distinguish that character from others of their race and colour.

My personal inclination would be to say that unless a character has a really bad memory for faces or really poor eyesight, they are going to remember someone of interest at least as well as the screenshot does, but not much better than it, either.

I wouldn't say I'm overly concerned about the issue. I'll just say that if anyone does it and I happen to notice it either from my own reading or via a player pointing it out to me, I'll employ shame tactics and quite possibly blatant abuse of DM privilege to make the person regret the fact that they didn't just make a small effort to describe a person rather than just typing "describes ur mom".

Can someone post a link or explain the functions and how to edit the character bio's?

As for posting descriptions I just post what the player in question tells me, or I ask to use there bio if such relevant info is there due to some info may not be usable in certain situations.

I think all the commands used to be under the Amia Chat tab on the side bar but when the hacker deleted a fair bit of the forums I think it was lost as well.

found em, silly me:-

Quote:
Bio Commands

This command enables you to alter your character biography (the bit you filled out at character creation, below your name) ingame.

The command looks like this;

Quote:
f_bio [R],[B),[N],[A]

The letters once again stands for different functions within the command. Let us go through them one by one.

R= revert is basically a failsafe should anything go wrong when you are altering the bio. It changes your bio back to what it was at character creation.

So using "f_bio R" will wipe the whole current bio clean and revert it to how it looked when you made the character.

B= Break adds a line break (return) to the end of your current bio which is useful when you want to spread out you bio to make it more reader friendly.

So using "f_bio B" which will make the text jump down a line basically.

N= new overwrites current bio with [text] and adds a space to the end. [text]is what you write after the command letter.

So using "f_bio N A superior elf stands before you brimming with energy." will erase your previous bio and replace it with "A superior elf stands before you brimming with energy".

A = add appended to the current bio with text and a space

So using "f_bio A Elves superpwns stunties" will add the line "elves superpwns stunties" after the last sentence in the current bio.

Only on Amia would "Describe people you see" warrant a 3 page topic of people bitching about it.

There any way to preview your bio after messing with it?

Assign examine to a quickslot and click on yourself.

It's a good idea also to assign one of your quickslots to a text macro for the linebreak command if you're going to use it a lot. A custom text macro is one of the options you get when right-clicking a quickslot. When you're done editing you can just clear that quickslot.

Don't put *describes person X* into IC threads, simple as that.

As a DM, I don't really care if you have the physical characteristics of your character decided or not. But, if I catch someone switching their physical traits around from day to day, I'll be very upset.
