Research roleplay. I don't know how to do it. For those involved in research, is it done in game? Forum based? Do I need a group? Is it meritable if done alone? I have some things I'd like to do, but I really don't have any ideas on how to go about it. For those currently involved in the scholarly side of RPing, could I get some input here? How can I make an in-game connection to lore that I also have to find in real life?

It can be done in-game or via the forum, in my experience. I personally prefer the former, but so long as there's DM interaction telling you what happens and what doesn't, either is fine. As far as "merit" is concerned, RP is RP, weather it's done in a group or alone with just a DM involved. As for "making an in-game connection to lore that you have to find in real life," I don't quite get what you mean by that. Could you give me an example?

Depends on the lore.

There's some Lore which you'll need to interact with DMs at some level to acquire, and there is some lore that you can probably RP alone in a Library or what have you that'd be pertinent.

A good help would be to screenie any and all Rp'd research (especially if you're doing it alone in a Library or such)

If I'm researching something neither I nor my character know about, how can I get answers? Strictly DM involvement? It's easier to research something that you have a sourcebook to and you know exists in the realms.

in that case, you might start the research IC and a DM might be so kind as to point you to where to find it OOC, so you can IC learn from it.

Oddly I would agree for a research thread if only to help the DMs concentrate a single place for where all the players can go to post and new players can go back and see the 'cliff notes' if any are said to be available ICly somewhere.

Because personal past attempts to do some kind of 'research' seems to have ended...oddly. Can't say well, can't say poorly. Just oddly. I'm still trying with a thread or two but not seeing much results. *shrugs* I know the DMs have a feck ton of threads to look over so it is what it is.

Would PC stories count towards having a sub forum for IC research or just keeping it in the PC stories thread as a char researching with a DM encouraged to post/reply? Or a Research one in ...well..the library forum since..yeah as the previous poster said. It's a library.

If the person to ask is a PC that would work. But if the person to ask is an NPC and DM/Player times don't coincide, a thread might keep getting lost or others might be involved in it so it might take more than a PM. Or it could be ongoing with multiple players so take more than a request.

Hence my own personal wonderings about this aspect of trying to conduct research RP that might be utterly separate in a fashion to the OP's own. Or not. I'm still almost awake so forgive if it sounds like rambling.

I'm all for IG stuff, but some things are more sensitive subjects. Things like evil rituals and the like. You can't exactly advertise something like that. It's also difficult to determine what lore is common sense, secret knowledge, or something easily found.

Ah I got what you mean, ran into similar concern recently over what I can logically know n what is considered secret omg no one knows knowledge. What I personally did was just went one on one with a dm presenting everything I know icly n what n how I would go about experimenting in pms.

She already did. It's called "Xavi's Biography."

On topic, yeah, just tell a DM what your PC is attempting to do or experiment with or find, and they'll be around to help and respond what they can. Note: Just because you're looking for something doesn't mean you'll find it. You may find out something totally different. That's what research and experimentation is all about.

Perhaps some of the older players could post examples of their characters IC research? Could be anything.
Just block out the Essential parts with a [Blank] which can be metagamed. Im sure the author of the post would appreciate it, And many other players.

i just did some IC research... it started out with a few posts on the grove forum to back up the rp that I would be asking for... then looked at the dms and found the one who would be most suitable to ask due to what I was researching then sent a PM and in a few days time i got a suitable answer. I am guessing it's safe to say most dms will be very open to this as long as you have RP to back it up and keep the RP ongoing.
