Some time ago I noticed that many of the job system items would require several jobs to accomplish a specialized task, for example making paper requires a Market Gardener to stockpile papyrus, and scribe to prepare the proper pages from the papyrus. after having more than once felt the need to ask a DM for a restart on the jobs because of this I wonder if you guys would be interested in filling in a few blanks regarding the synergy of different jobs.

It wouldn't be fair to just ask without giving so here is my example

Metalworking specialist:

Miner level 1 (3 points)
Refiner level 1 (3 points)
Weaponsmith level 3 (18 points)
Gemcutter level 1 (3 points)
goldsmith level 1 (3 points)

with a total of 30 points this specific choice of jobs allows you to create the best weapons avaliable from the ground up literally, and even gives the option of making rings aswell. you could replace the gemcutting and goldsmith choice with armoursmith, or perhaps boosting the refining or mining level to 2 to increase productivity.

Chef/farmer:

Cook level 2 (9 points)
Market gardener level 1 (3 points)
Poultry farmer level 1 (3 points)
Butcher level 1 (3 points)
Dairy farmer level 1 (3 points)
Orchadar level 1 (3 points)

with a total of 24 points used this leaves the last two choices open for brewery, another sort of animal farming, even herbalism and alchemy, the reason I stuck with level 2 cook is that it is very difficult to gather all the components for the most tasty sounding meals at level 3 because it leaves you with less options. you could have the best chicken wings in the land but on a whole I feel this is one solution to keeping variety.

I do not intend this thread to fly in the face of co-operation to complete such tasks, crafting my mithril sword and enchanting it was alot more interesting when I was looking for a specialist rather than trying to grab each job myself and do it that way, instead the reason I post this is to help players who are not so familiar with the job system to see some of the difficulties when choosing jobs for a specific task in mind, only to realise they overpowered say, bowyer, and lack the variety they are after with the other tasks they might perform, such as arrow making.

scribe seams to be a very good catch all job, being useful for signmakers, weaponsmiths and authors alike.

I look forward to everyones suggestions and idea's, everyone has a different way of using the job system, some do not plan at all, unfortunatly for now as many have guessed I am not one who can not plan >_> one of the more difficult ones in my opinion is inventor, as this requires component items from herbalist, alchemists, leatherworkers, gem cutters and a variety of other places.

I would also love to hear suggestions similar to the above examples that focus more on being excelent at co-operation with others, for example courier, several trader jobs, map maker, leading to a career in delivery =D of course there are a multitude of possibilities. one I haven't covered is magical research and development, which can vary from studying and collecting from magical beasts or demons to how to construct and maintain a golem, and invent new parts along the way. for example.

anyway I think i've babbled on enough i'm sure you get the jist of what i'm saying >_> how would -you-/have you combined the jobs to create your own specilized field for your character?

The point of the system is to make sure no single character can do everything from scratch to finished product, but that they are dependent on other characters or stock market.
Though, I must say I don't really understand what you're getting to. What would you like to see changed?

naw I tried to say that in my previous post but I guess I'm not so great with my words.

making the highest standard items of all would require at least several players with the maximum skill for their chosen job, since you can't get more than one level 3 job, I don't think this should be changed.

The examples I posted are the way I think about the characters profession, rather than picking ten random level 1 jobs, I try to use the other jobs associated with the main one to fill out the character in RP and in crafting stuffs. after all its unlikely a master weaponsmith would not give a bit of mining and smelting a go for example, but the best results would still come from a master miner and refiner working alongside the character.

one reason I post this was because of the sheer amount of time we spent looking for a dwarvern stonemason, imagine then if we found one, and then needed to find a carpenter, sawyer, archetect, rather than three or four professionals in their trades who may be able to saw some wood and knock up a sign or some ladders or some such, another who could dig the stone and smelt the iron.

I guess this is just the way I think of it all. I don't think it would be as acessable if the jobs we're restricted to one per character, but I entirely agree the best thing about it is working with others.

Characters can as they're higher do more then one job but I get what you mean.

To be able to from start to finish get the highest quality, you NEED multiple people. BUt, that's part of what the system had in mind.

It sounds like a request for jobless PCs to pick up a job to help bolster the RP factor already inherent in the job system since there are a lot of demands for crafted goods but astonishingly, seem to be some jobs that provide the raw resources not being taken.

Personally it could be suggesting jobs to people who don't have/can't think of what to take, that would provide a bolster to their own PC's RP repertoire so to speak. To which, I approve!

Good thinking. A problem with this, however, is that you need a lot of the 'trader' jobs to be able to carry the stuff around, particularly when your failure rate is 30-50% (rank 1 or 2). I've previously suggested that NPC traders should be found in city market areas and not wandering about in the wilderness.

Good reason not to get yourself banned from every city on the island. :D

There's trader NPCs in more convenient locations, as well.

from a players standpoint, I honestly feel more drawn to the jobs that create an end product than specializing with the ones that are the raw components, I'm thinking since I haven't gotten a job with Tao yet to try the exact opposite this time around, i'm pretty sure there is a lack of master refiners for one, i'm sure a read of the job list will spring something to mind.

I highly approve of the direction this topic is headed, it has opened my mind to new ideas and ways of thinking about the job system, and I hope more people take this onboard.

due to my experience just trying to make a simple book using the system, i have always stayed far far away from the jobs that craft things. i prefer gambler/priest etc things that let you interact with items.

Depending on others is usually out of the question for you can't really find folks with right skills and especially ones that would be ICly tolerable to/by your character.

You have the freedom to choose only those jobs which gather, thus allowing you to supply many jobs further down the chain, or to choose only jobs which turn those resources into finished products. I can't mechanically do anything about people's reluctance to be only a part of the chain. You're just going to have to overcome that on your own.

That's why you got the NPC merchants. The Job System is the commodities market at its simplest, really.

Got a raw material and trying to find a buyer for it, but can't find anyone? Sell it to the stock NPC.

Need a raw material, but can't find a trader for it? Buy it from the stock NPC.

There's no higher price for the rarer materials on NPCs, because it's quite complicated to script (Disco says he had an idea about making prices dependent on supply and demand, but he discarded the plan in the end), so this bit is something players should do themselves to get the markets flowing. If you need an ingredient, but it's not for sale from the NPCs, put up an ad saying you want to buy this and make a lucrative offer someone will accept, and begin producing your desired raw material for you. Could be a trade in some other raw material, or gold or services.

Basic economy FTW!

But yeah, there's not a lot that can be done about people's reluctancy to be part of the great market chain. If there's no supply and demand, the system won't work and someone will take losses. Some mechanical incentives can be added, but since this is just game economics and not something people really depend on, a lot of it comes down to being willing participants.

It just takes some time, but you can find people for almost anything... just actually ask around.

ah, the npc merchants discourage working together though, not that they arn't mega useful and have saved me literally days.

one of my biggest complains would be that to be a master miner it pretty much requires a dwarf, and a lawful dwarf that can access a particular place, because no other race is aloud there, and as far as I know, is -the- only location of mithril in either server. without relying on npcs. and, I have yet to meet a dwarf that has said they have been aloud into the place, let alone mined anything.

as for pricing, I recall a large set of paper being sold for some rediculous price a while back, I don't know how everyone else does it but I hear the same method as regular items works well, using the job matrix and doubling it give or take a few. (for normal items many people do a similar thing using hil'rash as a guide.)

Well, they're a necessary part of the market in order for it to function at all with our "commodities" resources.

You could have a PC doing the same as the NPCs, of course, but PCs online time is limited, which brings us back to the restrictions.

There are more places where one can mine in peace. One is in frozenfar, one is underdark, and there are allways scattered resources. You do not need dwarf for it.
