I'm only posting this thead because I RTFW and it contradicts itself. It also differs from the Bioware forums...or agrees, depending on what you read.

I know the recommendations here are always to go w/spot, but the wiki (and Bioware) say that Listen can detect invisible critters, while Spot doesn't. I've also read that Listen 'doesn't pinpoint an invisible creatures location' while Spot does...yet Listen allows one to target an invisible creature. So MECHANICALLY, which is better? I know the OPINION (which I think is a conspiracy started by SD's to allow them to NOT take ESF - Move Silently... :) ), but what is The Truth?

This -is- a tricky question, Frankly. Let's see if i can post some quotes from the now deceased build topic.

A good thing to remember on the listen vs spot is

You cannot spot people behind obstacles. So if your char is hiding, and sees other chars as transparent, You can be sure that they cannot see you.

Listen can hear people around corners, which makes the OP hiding person visible and "Transparent" to the listener.

If you detect a sneaker with listen, he will still be able to sneak/death attack you.
If you spot him, he will not be able to sneak/death attack you.

Listen
* +10 DC if the listener is in combat.
* +5 DC if the target is standing still.
* -5 DC if the listener is standing still.
* +1 DC for every 3 meters between listener and target.
* Size modifiers (tiny: +8, small: +4, medium: 0, large: -4, huge: -8).
* +5 DC for every 40cm of object (including creatures) between listener and target in outdoor areas.
* +2 DC in indoor areas if the line of sight is blocked and the target is within 4 tiles.

So yes - I can hear you through walls!

If you're not within LoS, then you can't see or hear them. It's just funky Bioware coding. Just like the fact they put in the feature to hear invisible creatures, but only if they're in your attack range anyway.

And I'm saying that from years of playing sneaker PCs. Back when I used to play with Uberuce, I used to be able to hide from him all the time if I was behind an object, despite the fact his Listen was higher than my MS. I'm not talking for a few seconds, I'm talking like half an hour.

I don't want to draw out this argument here where it's off-topic, but I have definitely, in the past (albeit on another server - but this is about BioWare scripts, not Amia-specific ones) been able to hear around corners. What happened is that the stealthed character blipped on my screen transparent, then stayed for about 6 seconds. Basically, each round, the image either appeared, stayed, or faded. This was in an afk situation so I don't imagine this coming into play much in combat situations.

Stealth checks

Player detects stealth: 5 times per second
Player rolls for hide/move silently/spot/listen: 6 seconds

This means once per round you roll for your listen/spot/hide/MS dice, and if someone in stealthmode is in range, you search for them 5 times per second. That's 30 times every round, and the timing for you rolling spot/listen versus them rolling hide/ms isn't synchronized, so the moment someone rolls low, you got them.

Also note that if you're standing still, you get the same benefits of using ACTIVE DETECT mode.

And Svensk is wrong that you can hear someone trough walls, because of NWN not having creatures appear on your screen even if you succeed that listen roll, because you never spotted them. It's part of the whole game engine problem where you can't even see PCs if they are behind a door, no matter how high your listen is.

And a quick scenario to explain why I think spot is better than listen:
Hidey and Spottey are both out in the Amian forest at night. Spottey is his usual cool self and is leaning against the sign. Hidey on the other hand, is hiding behind a friend of his 10 meters away.

Hidey got 50 Hide/MS and Spottey has 50 Spot/Listen.

Now Spottey trying to HEAR Hidey with a listen check:
+5 Target standing still
-5 you standing still
+15 DC because people are in the way
+3 DC because he's standing 10 meters away.

Final outcome without the modifiers involved:
Effective -18 To Listen because the DC of the enemy roll has been increased by 18.
Rolls are now 1d20+32lListen VS 1d20+50MS. Chance of success: 5% 20 roll, 5% opponent roll 1. 20+32 = 52. 1+50 = 51. Hence you need 20 roll and enemy need 1 roll to break his DC IF conditions are met.

Now Spottey is trying to SPOT Hidey with a spot check:
+5 Target standing still.
-5 You standing still
+5 Because Spottey doesn't have darkvision and it's night
+5 Because Hidey is BEHIND Spottey, and spottey doesn't know the mechanics well enough to turn around every now and then.

Final outcome without the modifiers involved:
Effective -10 Spot because the DC of the enemy roll has been increased by 10.
Rolls are now 1d20+40Spot VS 1d20+50Hide. Chance of Success: 40% chance to roll 12 or greater, 45% chance to roll 9 or lower. 20+40 = 60 Spot max. 10+50 = 60 Hide. Hence 9 or lower must be rolled to spot him. 12+40 = 52, 1+50 = 51. Hence 12 being the lowest number to break his DC IF conditions are met.

According to a probability calculator that leaves 5.25% chance of Spottey hearing him, VS a 63% chance of Spottey spotting him. Not quite sure how accurate that is, but it sounds about right.

In the end it all comes down to "what can I control?". And you can't control the factors of the additional DC modifiers for listen as a listener. Not to a great extent. the only thing you can do is stand still..

Now if you're the spotter on the other hand.. you can control it ALOT better.
1. You can make sure to always have a lightsource or darkvision to remove the DC penalty of nights.
2. Turn around every now and then, or relocate to cover different angles of the same area to try and negate the -5 Penalty for them standing behind you.
3. Stand still obviously.
4. If you know there is someone there, but not exactly where.. Get a mage to AoE Light. If it hits them, you just earned yourself +10 spot effective against them.

Now.. Mind you as the HIDER it's alot easier to get the extra DC stuff versus the listener than it it versus the hider.. always stand next to something, try to blend in with crowds if you can, and so on.

edit:
And lastly listen can be WAY superior to spot some of the times, because most sneakers choose to neglect their listen. But that's not superiority by default, but because of silly players! :?

Spot is better. There's not even any competition.

And while everybody knows this, It also means that most people sack when gearing MS. Which also means that just half of the skill you need for spot needs to be invested in Listen,

pros and cons

And unlike Spot, detecting someone due to Listen means very little, considering they are still capable of getting you flatfooted.

Another +1 to Spot. :D

With the Tale of Spotey and Hidey, and the confirmation from Paladin (who had me at 'flat-footed'), I consider this matter settled. Let it hereby be declared throughout the land: SPOT ROOLZ, LISTEN DROOLZ!

Thanks people. PLEASE lock this before someone interjects and forces me to lose more sleep. :)
