I'm curious; do all the realism threads happen frequently, or is this a recent thing? Spell VFX's, cycles of night and day, permadeath...I was under the assumption this was a G-A-M-E. Does every aspect need to be regulated and rationalized?

Now don't get me wrong, there are some perfectly valid points in the threads I've seen recently, and in several cases I agree. However, bogging down the dev team's time with the regularity in which the 'planet' rotates and whether or not I can see shiney eyeballs floating around your head after you wildly gesticulate during spellcasting seems...counter-productive. How about a new mid-level playground with fresh new beasties? How about some Shiney New Toys to find in that next chest of yours? How about some SPARE TIME TO RUN EVENTS? These things, to me, are what we need to request and look forward to getting in the game. If you're looking for more realism...go outside.

Nothing wrong with folks wanting some realism to their play, so log as they remember it is, as you said, a game. Also, when you get Asbestosis or Meso from wearing that suit, I work for some lawyers that would be willing to represent you.

Some of the recent topics are related, others coincidential.

I don't think many people want realism, though. I know I don't. They may want more dynamic story, more exciting gameplay or a more immersive atmosphere. I can only speak for myself, but I'm just after a more enjoyable gaming experience. I don't give a rat's ass about realism in itself.

The way I see it, these discussions aren't really about realism vs. game fun. That's mostly just a rhetorical device used to set up strawmans and beat others with. It's about genres and expectations. Is your idea of fun a traditional dungeon crawl, an epic campaign of war, a world of horror and mystery, a seedy and gritty grass level campaign, high class diplomacy or something else? These kind of expectations and preferences lay behind our suggestions and aspirations.

Amia is large enough as is, though. We certainly don't need new areas, but rather improvements to old ones. And there's plenty of shiny toys. Those shouldn't be a priority, either.

I love realism because I love immersion, the heavier the immersion, the better the experience. If an RP is so good that I break out in a cold sweat and chills, and my hand shakes around my mouse, then something is going right!

The one place where you can't really fault realism is where it concerns characters and their in-character reactions. Would it be so bad if a character was startled once in a while?

Would I like to see more realistic characters? Hell yes! Will I get to see any? I don't know.

That's more or less the thing. It's hard to draw the line between what you know for a fact as a player and what your character perceives as a moving part of that world. I.E. Death debate, and whatnot.

Some people want to play 100% fearless, unabashed, unflinching, PC's that even though they're lv 3, don't blink at the sight of a Hellball explosion(they instead turn around and walk away from it in slow motion, of course). Some people want to play more dynamic characters who they try to get inside their heads and act according to what they think the character is prone to do, moreso than what they want it to do. Two different styles. Both fun for different people. And it's not always a case of purely one or the other. But it's To Shape vs To Be Shaped and To Act vs To React.

Not everyone loves playing the orphan child scratching out a living in a big magical world. Not everyone likes to play Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star, knocking over everything in his way, not breaking a sweat. Merely differences that must be realized. There is no one quality of "fun" that comes from Amia. And that is a good thing.

No, it's fine. We all have our preferences. Just need to be accepting of others.

I for example dislike most things in an RP server that would remind of of Sims. Having to eat. Having to clean. Having to socially interact or have my fucking happiness level go down to the point where I can't do anything I need to do, and have to sit around playing the stupid pinball machine until it gets up and then I lose my job anyway!....Oh...what was I talking about?

Oh yeah. That's my preference. But am I gonna roll my eyes and say "this sux" when one of my party members RPs being dehydrated or starving out in the field? No. I go with it. Who's to say I wouldn't be doing that if I were in the mood for it, so when it's presented in someone else's RP, I respect it IC for what it is, as I would want mine to be treated. That doesn't mean I coddle the PC ICly, I react however I feel my PC would react to it. But I certainly don't blow it off on an OoC level, saying that their method of playing isn't as "fun" as it should be.

Actually you'll note most of the threads have been started by relative newbies, or people who have been playing for about a year. Its about these times that a player starts trying to get involved to change Amia. They don't like how things have been working, have frustrations, and thus try and get things to work better.

The issue is that these threads are NOT new. Every three months or so a bunch of threads pop up suggesting changes. Usually around semestar break approaching or christmas holidays. Anyone who's been here for about two years knows these threads, has seen them before, and knows how it goes.

Guys, its nothing new. Just more of the same from people who want something to change so they don't have to experience change themselves by moving to a new server. Understandable, but just because a small group wants Amia to change for the, doesn't mean everyone else does. A good percentage of us stay on the server because we like it the way it is.

It's all good to make changes, but not at the expensive of losing the servers identity. There are other servers which fill the niches Amia does not. If you like that kinda thing, you should go play on those, instead of bumming around here complaining and being unhappy.

^^ That.

The VERY first time I played Amia, my PC was abducted by llothites. Lvl 3 PC. She was sacrificed. The level of detail and quality rp put into that experience was so much, I 'literally' thought about it for a couple days after and shuddered. It was like a good horror novel. It was so good, I just went ahead and perma'd that PC. Of course, it was a newbie, so it wasn't a big deal.

Since then, the Underdark on Amia has kind of freaked me out a little, as it ideally should. Llothites, man....look out.
----------------------------

On more general point, as Iron Angel pointed out, we all come to the game looking for different things. One person loves the nitty-gritty realism/immersion, another loves FR detailed lore, another loves competitive PvP, another loves 'shiney new toys', and another loves hunting/grinding while chatting in party about some cool movie they saw. I think most gamers in fact love some of each of these flavors.

I think the heart of making Amia popular lies at somehow appealing to all these various 'gamer senses' in way that is harmonious. Ie, make a world with options, where players can enjoy their various tastes without encroaching on each other's territory.

The bold ones, are the ones Amia is looking for.
The rest...eh, there are lots of other servers who cater to these.

Kudark, you can't rightly speak for the whole server.

Nor can I. But I think common sense tells us that as an RP server, we look for people who RP. Now under what abstract pretenses of realism or "nitty-grittiness", quite frankly, who gives a crap? A good story is a good story, whether your PC RPed wiping his ass this morning, or not.

To be honest, the unnecessary chatter on the party channel is annoying. To me, anyway. If you want to go kill something in particular, say so in character. I should not know what the rest of my party is planning from two zones away. There are plenty of forum topics to enthuse about character builds and films and stuff. Sometimes the immediacy of conversation is a big distraction from what you were actually wanting to do.

If used sparingly, Party Chat is not that bad. When it's overused, it may become annoying. Especially if you're RPing.

But it's not like it's hard at all to hit "Exclude Party Chat" on your chat log box. Don't leave a party simply because there's a lot of Party Chat. I've met people that can carry on two conversations at once, one IC and one in party. Just exclude party chat and continue on with your day.

Only time I had a feeling like that RPing was like 8-9 years ago, when I was on a bit more of a hardcore server and my character (an exiled outlaw) was surrounded by vigilantes and he had to either talk or fight his way out of a perma-death. (Which was a consequence on that server if you really pissed off the "good" side too often. :P)

That is perma-death at its best!

Only problem with this is that some people prefer to keep party chat reserved for absolutely necessary ooc communication, and would rather not have to 'exclude it' all-together just to be able to stop listening to the annoying socializers.

Though thats splitting hairs - you can always reserve necessary ooc communication for tells.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with hunting and chatting about films every now and then. Sometimes I love to rp while hunting. Some of my best quality rp was done with such! Even possibly getting a summon reskin out of hunt-rp.

But sometimes, I want to completely relax, treat the game a bit like WoW, and yeah, just chat it up about movies and stuff while clobbering some giants. What stinks, is when most of the party wants to do one thing, and one other party member wants to do something else.

Little problem. Sometimes it wouldn't hurt for you (as in all players) to set aside the usual chatter and attend to the needs of that one person who wants to do something a bit different than the usual grind. One day it might to be you that wants to try something different, and when that happens you want for the people you're playing with to see that their plans were not much in the way of plans in comparison. That's not going to happen if you kick back and shoot the breeze about movies and stuff.

I don't mean to burden you with responsibility, but... well actually I do. You're responsible for the community that will play here in the future, and how you act will determine how it turns out. If you want a lengthy out-of-character discussion, the forum or instant messaging is the best way to do it.

In-game is far from ideal because frankly, there are no separate tabs in which you can multi-type, so that when you have two people waiting on a reply from you, you can only work on one at a time, in which time the other one may be pinging you with more Tells asking what the hold up is, and you can't answer because you're already Telling someone else. You know?

I actually agree here. Normally I'm of the 'will of the many' overrules the 'will of the few' mindset, but since this IS a rp server, I feel it necessary to contribute rp if even just one player in a six-person party wants it.

But you can't forum-post and clobber kobolds at the same time. I don't know how to explain it...there is a certain, 'simple' pleasure in just partying up with some buds, hunting some illithids arcade-style, and just chillin' oocly. If everyone in the party consents to it, I don't see how it is a problem. Again, if even one person wants the rp...then I do agree that its the responsibility of the party to contribute that.

I understand where you're coming from. Even an ounce of time spent in ooc chatter with one person is technically less time spent ICly with someone who wants to rp. And since this 'is' a RP server, yeah, priority should probably be given to the person waiting on RP.

Gods, what about when your walking with another toon, they stop, so you stop, thinking that they are about to say something icly. A minute passes, maybe two, and then the toon starts to walk again, obviously having just sent either a tell, or a message, or something not having to do with the server they are taking up space on. Once is fine, twice... ok. But when you constantly do it, it takes away from the fantasy atmosphere that some of us try very hard to uphold. If you want to play the game, play it. If you want to chat about all sorts of bullshit, leave, give that spot to someone who wants to, dare I say it, RP on an RP server!

I sure hope the server isn't full when the party of OOC chatterers are running about, if they all consent to it, then find a grinding server and have at it. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to try and get on when you want to RP and the server is full. I think it's a problem because that only encourages OOC on a RP server, it's bad enough as it is.

Your last paragraph states it right.

The amount of OOC party chat I log into while DMing is maddening, sometimes. I was DMing with Lally once, and we made a dare to see if people could last x minutes without party chat. The amount of RP that suddenly appeared was nothing short of amazing. :D

A blunt "Can you tone down the OOC crap a bit, please?" works wonders too. I don't mind the lack of IC RP that much PvM, but blatant OOC chatter annoys me. Set windowed mode and talk over MSN about your stuff.

Well, that just seems kinda rude. In all fairness, party chat is a lot easy than clicking portraits and sending tells back and forth. Not saying it's needed, but it is easier. And that's what it's there for, really.

Just Exclude Party Chat. I mean, if you don't want to hear it at all, it's a lot more effective and less jarring to other people than saying paraphrasing "your crap is annoying me."

If they have anything important to say to you OoC, they can just send you a tell. But don't go being a douche when you can solve your own problem, I say.

I'd like to exclude party chat, but when necessary IC information gets done in party chat, like where the party goes next etc, your solution falls apart. If I want some classic dungeon crawl style feeling and all they do is talking crap, I will ask the party to tone the crap down and RP a little. I am not talking about mass parties for convenience when I am RPing in the middle of Winya or somewhere. In that case I could split the party chat and concentrate on the RP that is going on, without a combat log, yes. Call me rude and an elitist, but I think I am not asking too much. What annoys me most are OOC statements or whole conversations that can be transferred 99% to IC if the [party] tag wasn't infront of it. [Party] Lets kill some giants! could be said as well IC, dunno why I see it so much.

If some some ppl that know each other get together and whack some monsters and chat along the way be my guest (Mosh and myself grinded for long periods of time ourselves with lots of crap talk and IC 'breaks' ;) ), but doing so with a mixed party is as rude as my response. Not high magic, build topics, permadeath blah and other things, but this is for me the main reason many ppl see this server as arcade, because I have never ever seen any other RP server with so blatant OOC chatter.

This is certaintly an interesting point. To be honest, I too catch a bit of vibe that Amia has more party-chat, ooc chatter, than most other RP servers I've been on.

Is it really a culture thing? Call me slow, but the realization of this point alone kind of baffles me. 'why' does Amia have more ooc chatter? Why does there seem to be a bigger temptation to have party ooc chatter while hunting?

Best I can come up with, is that lvling is so damn FAST on Amia. So fast that its easy to separate it from rping...or at least, there is a temptation to do such, possibly more prevelant than on other rp servers, where lvling is slower (and thus more of something you simply have to deal with).

------------------------

In terms of rudeness, I think it IS rude to tell players to 'cut down on the OOC party crap'. However, it is 'not' rude to ask players to make all their decisions ICly. I think this is a fine distinction that really needs to be pointed out.

 OOC chatter about movies, anime, football, and warhammer is one thing. It should be allowed. If you don't like it - if somehow it really does distract you from rp, then just click 'exclude party' chat, instead of whining about it.

 OOC chatter that results in decision making - ie, where to hunt next, who should get what loot, and so on - this, to me at least, is a much bigger no-no. As Hendrak pointed out, excluding Party chat doesn't help here. You have a serious problem of ooc talk influencing IC decisions, which directlly kills the rp atmosphere. Asking someone to cut this kind of ooc chatter down is ok.

OOC chatter about movies, anime, football, and warhammer is one thing. It should be allowed. If you don't like it - if somehow it really does distract you from rp, then just click 'exclude party' chat, instead of whining about it.

No, it shouldn't be, and it's already been discussed why.

You keep bringing up the same points only worded differently.
You need to stop whining about how much you want OOC chatter. This is an RP server...simple really.

This topic is a dead horse, bury it already.

I'm not sure if you two realize, but you're being extremely rude. Especially you, Fox: you just literally said that excrement spews from other posters' mouths (or fingers, rather). If you don't think the topic is interesting, relevant or productive you are free to show yourself out of it. You can go spam in the designated Off Topic threads. Neither you nor anyone else gets to decide when a topic is a "dead horse" that should be left alone, except as far as your own behaviour is concerned.

OOC Party chat is fine with me when it concerns things unrelated to RP. When it distracts you from RP or you start handling IC things OOC it's gone too far. Yes, Amia has too much Party Chat and it should be reduced, but it needs to start from players. Outright banning it wouldn't sit well with the players. It might be good if players and DMs started reminding others frequently about staying IC on the Talk channel because that's what we're here for. Peer pressure and leading by example are surprisingly effective, so our best chance is to start using them.

I'm just glad nobodies going to entertain these thoughts on party chat seriously. Because you can block party chat if you don't like it, simple.

There's always something crucial you miss when you turn it off. Suddenly half the party ports away and you have no idea why. Iron's statement made the most logical sense - Lead by example.

Yet again the fallacy of free choice. I don't think most people take issue with seeing party chat but rather with the lack of respect and focus for RP that it generates. It is a mathematical fact that the time you type in party chat is time away from RP. When somebody not participating in the party chat start noticing your lack of initiative and low quality responses let alone when the party starts making IC decisions like where to adventure in party chat, it becomes a problem that needs to be addressed rather than ignored. Blocking party chat is about the worst thing you could do. Closing your eyes won't change other people's behaviour, and that behaviour is the problem.

We should crack down harder on party chat and OOC nonsense as a collective. Not through legislation but peer pressure, ridicule, social exclusion, bullheadedness and example. Personally, I simply refuse to answer OOC and continue to act on IC knowledge in small parties. In limited contexts the message is usually received clear enough. When there's more than three people in the party, this becomes ineffective. But you could try confronting the party IC and asking cluelessly where you should go next even if the rest of the party tries to decide that in the party chat.

Mmm... I like this idea. Need to make a game out of it. If I see party chat (or other OOC) within the say, 60 minutes, I take off a level for each comment. Those who put an extra effort into their RP get double DCs.

I'm not hardass enough to say party chat should be banned totally all the time, but sometimes people need reminders on what's the most important chat: IC chat.

I'm sorry, but no, I'm not just going to 'bury' it because you say so. Nine people out of ten could disagree with me and I still wouldn't shut up to satisfy you. No matter how much you disagree with someone, you should always be willing to listen to what they have to say. Thats just being mature. Anything else, is narrow minded, and yes, rude.

I still stand by my statement that ooc chatter isn't the bane of all existence on Amia. I personally see the game as a sort of 'online DnD game'. When I play PnP DnD with my friends, there is a lot of table talk. We make comments about each other's role play, joke about it, and have a good time. We occasionally chat about movies, anime, books, and so on. And if it gets excessive, yes I have to reel players back into the story, and yes it can get a little distracting/frustrating. But if one day I were to tell my group -no table talk whatsover-, they'd probably see me as a dick. And I would be.

Yes, its a rp game. Yes, its a rp server. And yes, rp servers involve rp. But the point of the game is NOT to role play. Its to have a good time. Mostly involves rping to have a good time, yes. But lets not be dogmatic/idealists/elitists about it.

At little bit of table talk about movies and such is fine at a PnP gaming table. It'd just be cruel to force everyone sitting at the table to talk, ICly, ALL the time.

Likewise, some ooc party chatter on Amia about said things is also fine. So long as its handled in doses/small quantities.

I like party chat. I won't be stopping it. It doesn't effect my quality of RP, and I think accusations of such are insulting. If people don't want me to talk, they can ask. I enjoy party chat with people, it breaks up the RP, as some RP is monotonous and annoying.

Well, I don't think using the party chat a lot degrades anyone's RP, per se, but it's easy to get lost in the chatter and forget about the RP going on. I see that a lot in the client, from all sorts of players, also those who've accumulated tons of DCs over the years, thus showing that they do spend a lot of time RPing, too. Party chat is, after all, just a nice side-dish and not the main thing people should be doing.

^^ Basically what I was trying to say, but much more efficiently.

I also agree. Just don't let ooc chatter 'accidentally' take over. Can easily happen. Happens to me more often than I like, sometimes.

Sorry if you're taking my response as rude or insulting, it's not given with that in mind.
If I wasn't willing to listen, I wouldn't be posting.

Like I said before, no one is asking to stop using it, just stop abusing it. I never said it affects quality either, so I don't know where that came from.
The OOC chatter is excessive though, using these: //

This is not a complaint on my part, only an example. From what I see, those are the ones getting noticed more often. I got a couple DC's over the past week (thank you!), and the last one was a couple months ago, yet I've been RPing my ass off the whole time, I just haven't been noticed is all, no big deal. I just think they don't necessarily reflect RP quality/quantity as a whole in determining who receives them.

Do this just enough to get people into the habit.

I can really get distracted by OOC, and have been a culprit myself, but, lately, I have avoided it as much as possible. If I need to say something then i say it to the person in tells.

Gods, what about when your walking with another toon, they stop, so you stop, thinking that they are about to say something icly. Once is fine, twice... ok. But when you constantly do it, it takes away from the fantasy atmosphere that some of us try very hard to uphold. If you want to play the game, play it. If you want to chat about all sorts of bullshit, leave, give that spot to someone who wants to, dare I say it, RP on an RP server![end]

Or they could just be replying to a Sending spell and trying to formulate the best 25 word response they can!

I'd rather PM's than party blab, sure the DMs would too. There are also some times where party chat is understandable. Ergo: People coordinating/waiting for a dm to set something up/conveying info OOCly about 'outside' of the 4th wall stuff occurring(Server crash etc.). That being said, you can always move party chat to the combat pane and minimize it, I do it a lot. And by a lot, I mean nearly every time I'm in a party. Not that i don't like people mind, but i have MSN/PM's for the OOC stuff because I can set that aside, and it not ruin the flow of the IC text on my screen. Patch chat runs together because its white, if it had its own color it'd be easier to weed out. I think its possible i just dont remember how.

Yeah, they're the ones who got noticed. It's true that there are folks who simply play at the "wrong" timezones or just get unlucky by RPing in one area while the DM is in the other. I didn't mean those with a lot of DCs are the only ones RPing, but rather tried to make a point that even those who do RP a lot and get noticed for it go OOC in the party chat, so it's not just the hardcore bosshunters and whathaveyou that often get blamed on the forums for making Amia "less RP server" or whatever. Dunno, those aren't my words, just stuff I picked up at random topics. :D

Certainly true.....I've been lucky enough to have accrued whats seemingly a lot of DC's in comparison to what others have told me they've got, and yet I'm easily waylaid into Party Chat....and even, as friends have pointed out, also "//OOC dialogue in the Talk Channel...." - which is a habit I should really try and break.

I should add that I attribute my good luck in getting DC's as to playing during all kinds of weird hours, but often when the Server wasn't very busy, but that when Brit or European or Aussie DM's might have been on....so was just more likely to get noticed......as well as Server busy times in groups that would draw a DM's eye too.

Not meaning to derail the topic too much, but in regards to DCs, I notice they come in packages, it feels like. I'll also rp like crazy for months and not get a single DC. Then, suddenly, two days in a row, I get a DC. Which is awesome. My play times don't really change that much either.

Not suggesting that DCs coming in 'clumps' is intentional by the DMs, just stating what I've personally observed.
