Having major crashing issues.

The crashes seem to be at random, though I've noticed a few patterns.

-When starting combat after a long pause or rp session
-When having to render magic's graphx
-when loading a transition that has lots of different background sound files playing (FoD, Cordor Sewers, anytime it rains, etc)

Though other times it crashes for no apparent reason.

When it crashes, it goes back to the desktop and the only way to be able to rejoin the server is if I restart the mac. I can also just turn Airport off and let the internet connection reset. I'll be able to join the server again, but most often I'll just crash immediately. I'll try this three or four times then just give up and reboot.

I crash very often. 5 or 6 times a night. If it is a magic heavy area, like yaun-tis, I'll crash every two or three minutes.

If anyone has any fixes or suggestions please post them. I have not been on any other server but amia since getting my mac.

Firstly, turn off shiney water and all those 'extra' features.

Secondly, re-install the HAK. (I take it you see the chicken)? The HAK might be causing you issues (might have become corrupted during download?) so try again.

Try those two things first and if that doesn't work, come back to this thread and ask again.

If your still having issues with your macbook. I suggest installing Windows on it with included apple software known as Boot Camp. You can find instructions with a quick google search.

Oh and the obligatry "Buy a PC" advice to <_<

I bet it is an overheating issue. Macs have extremely lowsy cooling. Try cleaning the fans and check some temperature sensor.

Windows will help with absolutely nothing.

I myself have an imac. While it is not a laptop, it still is an all in one. While the cooling system is effecitvely lowsy as silvarus said, I do not have these problems.

Do you have a real graphic card or one of those integrated video cards sometimes found in laptops?

When you say it crashes to desktop, do you mean you can see your desktop but cannot move your mouse, or even execute commands from keyboard shortcuts?

Lastly, do you have snow leopard? alot of friends, and myself, have experienced many problems when switching from leopard to snow leopard. Problems regarding softwares stability. There recently was a major mac update. When I did it, it solved many of my problems.

If none of the advice given above helps, I suggest you check your graphics card.

You can not reliably play Neverwinter Nights under Mac OS X on a MacBook Pro (or any Intel based Mac.) The publisher that ported the game never released a Universal Binary, so it's running under Rosetta; the game is being transcoded between PowerPC and x86.

The only way you're going to be able to play Neverwinter Nights on your MacBook Pro is to install Windows and play the PC version.

I currently play Neverwinter Nights on my MacBook Pro, but I have it booted into Windows when I play.

On my MacBook Pro if I attempt to play it, it gets slower and slower, then after about 10 minutes it just crashes. I just play it on Windows and avoid the headache. Windows is pretty much only there to play games.

I play on a MacBook Pro. Do you have the PC or Mac version of Neverwinter Nights?

Apologies for the double post, but this statement is not true. It actually states that it is only for -intel- macs, meaning the PPC version had been discontinued at some point. All I am missing is the Toolset but otherwise everything runs beautifully at maximum settings.

No. They never made Neverwinter Nights for Intel Macs.

Are you sure you aren't using Neverwinter Nights 2?

Positive. Otherwise I wouldn't be enjoying Amia. Bought the OC and both expansions separately for Mac.

Still having the problem

Reinstalled the hak and it still crashes

I've noticed it only happens during combat, when either me or anyone else is fighting something

I have been playing NwN (Mac version) on Powerbook and Amia on MacBook Pro for a long time with no problem.

For the record (think I posted this somewhere a year ago) :

The only issue I ever had was due to improper install of the 1.69 patch :
The Mac update installation instructions didn't include information about where the following files need to go:

- The xp3.bif should be extracted to the data folder
- The xp3.key file to the Neverwinter install folder
- The xp2_text_tpa.eft to the texturepacks folder
- Everything in the ambient folder should go into the NWN ambient folder.

If the xp3.key file and the xp3.bif file are not placed in the proper location, the new content from 1.69 will not show up when playing the game.

The NPC Merchants chest were not properly displayed and I had random crahes, up until I reinstalled the above 1.69 files properly.

Let us know if the ACP was indeed the faulty bit ?

I've only ever played NWN and Amia on my Macbook Pro. I have Win XP and the PC version of NWN installed as well, but never use it as it doesn't seem to work very well at all.

I don't have crashing problems on my Mac. The only problem I have is the screen will occasionally go blank, turning all black, or white or blue. If I'm able to guide my char using the minimap to walk to thru a transition, it will reset the screen and everything's fine. Otherwise, I have to quit and restart NWN.

I have most visuals on med to low settings, as I've read it helps performance.

Otherwise, I can't help much.

The blank screens of doom are not an issue related to MAC or PC, but to the game.

Reinstalled the game from scratch

Went into another server and it crashed. Hadn't even installed ACP or AMia haks yet

I used a .command script to install nwn and the patch, and I've never had crashes before 1.69... maybe its that?

Try running the installer .app as opposed to the command prompt.

It's running under Rosetta if you're running NWN 1. There is no Intel version.

Regardless, I don't know what his problem is. I have a MacBook Pro and I can not get NWN 1 to run for longer than 10 or 15 minutes before it crashes, so I run the Windows version on my XP Boot Camp partition. Runs fine under XP on max settings.

I should have asked this first, but are you running Norton Security (Antivirus or 360) on your Mac? If you are, remove it. I guarantee that if you're running Norton anything that that is the source of your problems.

I also guarantee that if it is installed, the Uninstaller will magically not work. You'll need to download the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of it.

If you don't have Norton, try creating a new user and running the game under the new account, this will rule out any corrupted preference files or 3rd party applications.

If that doesn't work, try booting into Safe Mode by holding the Shift key down when you hear the chime. This will keep 3rd party kernel extensions from loading and will help rule out any conflicting extensions.

This man speaks the truth. Norton is like cancer for computers, and just as hard to remove.

If all else fails, try your disc on another computer, or attempt to set your computer up to dual-boot Windows XP and see if it works then.

For Mac:

I've never been a fan of many Microsoft products, but I've found Microsoft's Security Essentials to be less obtrusive than most AntiVirus and AntiMalware applications. I used to use AVG, but it's become too bloated and annoying. It's also free.

If you have the money, I've found Sophos to be hands down the best AntiVirus and AntiMalware solution on the market... but it's expensive. Fortunately I get it for free through work.

Wouldn't hurt to boot from your system discs and run the Apple Hardware Test utility just to make sure it's not a bad video card, memory module, etc.

To do this, put in the OS media disc that came with your computer, then boot your computer holding down the D key.

I figured I'd use this post as I've been having a problem on my ibook, I can't get any sound on my ibook when I play NWN. Other than that it runs my NWN better than my iMac does. A lot better.

iBooks are something... archaic. Wasn't that the late 90's craze of coloured clamshells? Didn't know you can run NWN with them.

iBook G4 wasn't all that bad for when it came out. The latter versions had 1.42GHz G4 and 32MB mobile Radeon. Not too shabby.

I'm fairly certain his problems are related to running the game under Rosetta. Unless he runs it under Windows, I don't think his problems are going to be solved. I've been down this road with my own MacBook Pro, and I could not find a solution.

Got a few updates today.

If anything it made it worse. Game runs for about 5 minutes before crashing. That is if it doesn't just crash outright upon starting up.

Can't find that utility disk, so I'll wait till I'm at a friends house who uses mac.

I tried holding down shift during the chime. Started up but took much much longer to do so. Also the background was the standard galaxy sign. NWN would not startup in this state. Had to revert to normal mode, as every time I clicked on the app, it crashed before even changing the screen

I have this exact same problem on my Macbook Pro. What I've found that fixes it, is taking your helmet on and off. That clears it, don't ask me why!

Yay! Another MAC user! :D I think this was resolved already, but...

Blank screen, but the HUD remains visible? if that is the case, for my MacBook Pro, I have found that all I need do is cycle either my clothing or helmet. From what I can tell, doing such forces the screen to re-render and the FPS to synch up once again. No need to dash out of an area.

Otherwise I run just fine with all the bells and whistles turned on for graphics. What model MacBook Pro is it? Also, you may want to consider Reinstalling NwN from scratch. Are you running it in a virtual machine/bootcamp or are you running the MAC version?
