I always wondered exactly why this was the case. I for one think it would be really nifty to get rid of that rule or allow more exceptions. Those that are in game already I think really add to the atmosphere. One of the greatest bards of the server was Llewyn Forest and one can read his work in the Demiplane of Knowlege with his "Never eat a Fae" and the "The Battle at the Temple of Torm" in which Scarlet Ve'heer, Boppi, Irraere D'Vreeze and are few others are a part of. You walk into the Kohlingen Keep and many new recruits of the TKs ask who Lord Darius Tristam is and why a statue was made of him.

Why should a faction that is proud of it's history not have the ability to have statue's of their former leaders stand in their faction base? Or why should the efforts of Xaviera and co with the temple of love not be commemorated by a sign where those who worked for it being created are named? Why could the shield of two of the greatest templars Raziel and Hector Tormigan not hang in the meeting room of the keep? Or perhaps a certain new bard has his work published or perhaps a wizard his study? It demonstrates that the playerbase actually influences the world around them.

I hope the answer is not because a few would perhaps whine if they do not get something memorable themselves.

This reminds me, I still should ask for Sharina's grave to be added next to the other sarcophagi of dead chapter masters in the Cathedral.

Roland Siggers would have definite priority to getting a grave added.

Edit 2: Seeing I was just asked by three kellies via pm, he was the temple father and pretty much with Daren Sten the one of the first two kelemvorites from which the faction evolved from. A reason a grave of him would be great and fitting.

I absolutely agree with this. A credit for those that have influenced the world of Amia. I know many people, including Jud'vardas, Xaviera, Trent Blake, Gillaria, Boppi andve influenced the world of Amia with the actions and decisions they have made... But there is no memorial to them, because that would be applying favoritism to certain players: and that is seen as negative.

But is it negative? As Phearnun already said, the very idea of such an acknowledgment would and surely could inspire and encourage other players to not only strive to one day have their own name scribed on a wall, or a statue ressurected in their honor: but adds an incredible sense of flavor to the game - knowing that these players could still possibly log in, and you could meet them!

I find it, ICly, exciting. But perhaps the issue is the idolisation itself.

Wondered this myself, from time to time. It is a dynamic world, with PC and NPC alike being able to make an impact. It seems like an arbitrary distinction to make. "This charater's efforts will be memorialized, because he had an impact on his community/faction/whatever." Whereas, "No, we can not memorialize this character's efforts in his community/faction/whatever." The distinction is not effort, nor time, nor impact, nor any other IC distinction; but simply, one is an NPC, the other is a PC.

It shows with factions & settlements that do not have high NPC activity/presence, but are nevertheless active in the world around them, as these places can never establish about them a certain 'in-game culture.' Cordor has plenty of statues commemorating leaders, history, etc. Kohlingen has statues of noted figures of the past. In contrast, for example, the Monolith will never have a hall with portraits of Headmasters and other noted magicians of the institution, or any other in game culture of this sort. Other factions that do not have high or significant NPC activity will never have equal 'in game culture,' though I will not comment on their behalf. Its a minor detail, but I think its curious.

Simply put, PCs have had the same impact of an NPC, and will never get treatment an NPC would get for the same thing.

In short: 'tis far too arbitrary to avoid ruffling feathers.

As one whose name has been mentioned, I certainly don't disagree  but I think the perception of favouritism is indeed the issue. As was apparently the case with the plushies.

Perhaps the PCs will simply have to live on in their PC Stories.

Yus. Many players, including myself, play the game because they want to play characters that can influence and interact with the world around them. Being too negative about allowing characters to have impact on the game world frustrates these people greatly.

Well, it is unlikely any of my characters will ever have a reason to be immemorialized in statues or graves since Godfrey is a lackey and Gagis isn't likely to die, but this principle applies to them trough other means as well. (Gagis seeks large scale faction achievements, creation and destruction of areas and structures etc. and Godfrey is all about building Caraigh and getting a fluid and healthy economy in place.)

I've not truly understood this rule for a long time, as well.

The explanation I was given was two-pronged. Firstly, it presents a hard situation for the Devs, having to update and add things to the setting for individual PC's. Secondly, having IC monuments to characters still walking about is somehow divisive to the playerbase.

I don't particularly see the issues with that. For factions and their areas, they get to change their whole bases, build temples, sanctuaries, dungeons and whatnot. They get updated on a fair basis, from what I've seen. What's the harm in a faction building a monument to their own chaps in their own house? That's there prerogative, and it doesn't require any more to be done on the dev's part that what is already done on a regular basis.

As far as monuments in public areas, I don't see the harm in there either. In civilized areas, they still have to get the permission of the locals/government to do it. In which case, it serves as its own check and balance. They're not gonna let some random, smug adventurer come around and erect a statue in their front yard. But someone who has endeared himself enough, done something significant enough, amassed the materials or gathered them from people who would like to see such done, then more power to him. As it has been said, it's a dynamic world, and there's no reason to put a ban on IC actions that deserve IC rewards/consequences just because we're afraid someone's going to cry about their character not getting the same OoC. If PC's deserve it, they deserve it. If they don't, they don't, and should have to deal with it.

Seems you're a little behind the times, Svensk. Unless a DM puts a poll up, we ignore them because they aren't an accurate example of anything. In addition, they're tacky on a topic like this.

To the rest of you folks with overblown senses of your own importance, we did slack off on this a while back. None of you have met my personal criteria for deserving either commemoration or memorialization, so I haven't pushed for anything to be done.

I don't want a clusterfuck module, thanks very much.

That's not to say I'm opposed to memorials or something, I'm quite neutral on this matter.

Edit: ooo, clusterfuck isn't censored...

I do not see how it makes sense that factions can not do this, if they so decide. I mean, they have control over many other aspects of the design of their bases/houses/whatever. Are statues/plaques/pictures that taboo? Should player-run areas not be able to establish their own in-game culture as DM-run areas can and do and have?

I mean, DMs still have veto over what goes in, right?

Why does this have to devolve into personal commentary? I think the range and scope of examples being provided are reasonable. Its hardly a parade of ego.

Clusterfuck clusterfuck clusterfuck.

I think the DMs can map it out quite well to see whose characters have influenced Amia enough to "deserve" a statue of themselves. Fudge favouritism, would be a major orgasm to the atmosphere!

I have to admit, with the Monolith's Weave Knights at least I had started something like it on the forums , and areas/factions with a public forum could do similar (maybe in some cases with a placeholder on the server to let people know where it is).

Yes, to clarify, I'm not saying how easy or hard it should be to get a living PC to have a statue IC.

Just that a public and immutable policy of "No living PC will ever be commemorated, ever" is silly. Yoss's opinion is fine with me. If the standards are X high, that's peachy, because it at least lets us, the players, know it's attainable, however difficult or improbable it may be, there is the chance. And chance, probability, and change are the lifeblood of a dynamic setting.

Easy answer: add 'statue' to the list of things a mason can create. Then go find a scribe and place your own statue anywhere! That way it can be defaced just as easily as it was created.

I'm pretty sure the DMs were quite agreed on forgetting the absolute policy back when I was still on the team, and Yossarin seems to confirm that. It's just a matter of not having occasion to do anything about it.

If this is to work, there needs to be a clear and mature distinction made: nothing in game is an OOC recognition or a nice gesture to anyone's character. How much the character and player contributed to the server shouldn't be an issue. IC motivations and actions (of PCs and NPCs alike) should be the cause. This means that there's no reason to cherish any such additions as memorials to be preserved. If something is "deserved" OOC, removing it means an OOC insult and sends the message it's no longer deserved. But if it's understood that they're just fleeting effects PCs can have on the world, there should be no reservations about changing them as events warrant. If there's a political revolution, a leader's statue will probably be torn down. If your temple is raided, looted and burned down, the holy relics and corpses of your saints will probably be lost. And so on.

It's a matter of Dev willingness, but I think the standard for effecting temporary and dynamic changes on the module should be quite low. That is to say, if there's a DM or player plot going on that changes something, it should be visible in game. Permanent memorials are tacky, but they're permanent only unless someone decides to get rid of them IC.

Yes, Iron can probably attest that I kept chipping away at that old policy for a long time and I felt it was one of those things he and I felt exactly the same about. So I agree 100% with what he said above.

Though it is nice to see you players pointing your fingers at us and saying we're not handing you commemorations and memorials on a silver platter when the IC method would be for you to wheel and deal with the proper IC forces (for an area that is primarily NPC operated) or just to fucking request it for your private factional areas since you're footing the bill for them anyway.

Let me give you an example. I seriously contemplated having a kind of PLC memorial added to the new South Cordor that clearly and without a doubt indicated that the "design" of the area (although done by Koragi OOC'ly) was mapped IC'ly by Grymia's deceased PC, Christophan Warrick Kenlyl, who briefly held a clerk position in the Commonwealth government and therefore was able to push a massive proposal the player worked very hard to prepare through. And although it had a few very teeny tiny little post-mortem "modifications" that only he would know about (and those who held the original record of his proposal), the new South Cordor is pretty much what the PC proposed.

I considered a sign of some kind, perhaps naming the little park on the hill where the children would play "Warrick Park".

I opted against it for sensible IC reasons. Although Christophan Warrick Kenlyl was a halfway decent clerk, he still had some details of his character that were suspicious. Former adventurer. Was known to have certain liaisons with certain people that were "under suspicion". Died, in fact, in a rather suspicious way. In addition, his public reputation suffered for a little bit there because he was somewhat demasculated and rumors abounded that he was "too womanly" for adequate public service. That he needed some cojones. I wouldn't say he was the Adlai Stephenson of Cordor, but there was a faint echo there. Therefore, the city was not going to push it out there, but I left the door open for any savvy PC out there to cry foul and say, "Christophan Warrick Kenlyl deserves a mention or memorialization here, government. You should put it in."

And proceed to guilt, cajole, wheedle, bribe, or do whatever is necessary to have it put in.

Cordor is really a terrible example, though, because they're such hardasses especially about the majority of the adventuring populace.

In my estimation, much better luck might be had on the vaster part of the server. In factional areas and areas that are undeniably PC-run (like Bendir Dale is now!) I say go more or less hog wild, so long as you can afford it and find the talent to get it done. Our Dev team doesn't seem to mind making casual updates with window dressing anymore, which used to be my only real concern.

And I should elaborate on a previous comment: some of you have done things that would (and may still) absolutely deserve some commemoration, but it hasn't been made public, or publicized. So it isn't like people are just falling stupidly short of my expectations or anything.

Nah, updates aren't a problem at all, if they're reasonable. What I do have a problem with is having to erect a statue on Monday and tear it down on Tuesday, only to erect another statue on Wednesday to have it torn down on Thursday to have players screaming at me on Friday for not erecting a new statue quickly enough.

In other words: module changes aren't the PC Story boards.

And I admit as a player, honestly just knowing Warrick was a big part of that change in South Cordor was cool enough. Enough people are around and it is noted in forum archives under the DM Story threads the part he played in that project.

And I also actually agree with Yossi's call and support it. It makes sense 110% and it does provide a vehicle for further RP if people wanna push it, if not *shrugs*.

And as someone who has put the entirety of time on Amia into a single faction, it is also rather discouraging. Alas, however, it is what it is. And I suppose there is nothing more to say on the matter.

But, I should point out that I did not suggest DMs did not have the final say in area designs.
No faction or faction leader can decide what they would like to do with their area without the DMs saying 'Yes.' And in general, I have found there is no problem in seeing reasonable changes done to an area given sufficient roleplay, etc. However, this has strayed away from the topic of the thread somewhat.

You know what... Screw physical statues to make your character's legacies immortal! Have a bard or such immortalize your tale in song! Maybe even interpretive dance or a play. There are plenty of ways to leave that lasting impression, even while you are still around!

You're the one choosing to make an "other," here, Tormak. I'm not the player who ruined this chance, so I would appreciate not being called a "you" in this instance. Continue to do so, and you're consciously choosing to make enemies. It's like when nations try to turn other nations into "others" by using patriotism. You can be a great DM and have a distinction between yourself and the playerbase without necessarily grouping the entire playerbase as one lump.

I'd appreciate not being grouped into lumps I was never in nor have any desire to be in.

You are not being punished for anything. It simply saves time and effort for a dev or an assigne designer to make the areas from scratch instead of unfucking the stuff of inexperienced players who want to make faction areas. Sorry if that offends someone, but it has to be said sometimes.

I'm not talking about building our own areas but about letting players say "Our characters want to build a statue of Mr. Awesomepants in that corner, please add it when you have some time to spare." Let them gather marble and hire a sculptor or whatever.

Love you, Estara, but know that you're dangerously close to hypocrisy. Why?

Because while it is not ok for the DMs to pass collective judgment on the players, it is perfectly reasonable for the players to pass collective judgment on the DMs. I figured this out a long time ago and any time I lump the playerbase together as one entity it is my tactical way of communicating how irritated I am that I am viewed differently because there's a DM title under my handle.

The way it chafes you now, in this thread, is how it has chafed me for years.

Nivo's right, though, this is quite off the topic and it is mostly resolved.

Adjusted to what the real meaning behind the statement is.

Can I suggest a compromise?

Maybe we can have an in-game library on past characters who are considered "note worthy" instead of statues or some house of the holy, to make eternal your characters, or to raise awareness to status in the community. Books, I don't think need necessarily outline a specific character, but maybe, all the characters who were or may have been essential to a time spoken event, in that to retell the history of Amia, not make a spectacular display of one's own PC.

it's just an idea.

I've seen what happens when this stuff gets in, is all. Hell, I remember a certain 7 page topic because a character was appended "Sir" to his title... Imagine if someone had an actual THING?

Who defines noteworthy?

Us?

You? Someone else?

An inherent loss of meaning and will therefore become the subject of huge debate adnd hurt feelings and therefore not worth pursuing over the butthurt it will generate, and *has* generated in the past.

Well, no. I would suggest what makes someone noteworthy is when say, it is essential to the telling of the tale. Consider:

The story of The Horde,

we know certain PC's who would be noteworthy for felling Guthma in decisive battles. But the majority of the subject would be for in the sake of, telling the tale. Not the tale of the character. Do you see?

Yeah...That made me pretty sad. Sorry to put a spin on a cliche' phrase but it just seems like everytime the DM's give someone an inch out of kindness to help enrich roleplay, we all want to take a mile.

Just seems to me that they are justified in their reasoning.

Oh, Christ on a cracker, I had forgotten about how the playerbase villified me for knighting Avadon and letting him put three letters in front of his goddamn name because he actually did the dirty work of a title-granting noble.

I was hoping all of that would go away, but no, here it is again. I'm sitting here defending your want to have IC memorials and commemorations put in-game and you people throw that in my face again?

Appreciation noted. Thread locked. Make your requests and do your IC things. I won't stand in your way.
