I've read and heard DMs tell people who get rebuilds that the name has to differ in one way or the other, for it to work properly without bug-a-roos all over the place.

Now what would happen if someone with the character name "Miss T. Catch'um" (all written in the first name part at character creation) made the new character "Miss T." (first name part) "Catch'um" (surname part)?

Would it work?

Thanks in advance!

I think it would work, yeah, since the fields are seperate.

Maybe test offline, make a char with that name, then make another char with the names separated between the two fields, if they both show up without a number infront of them then I think it's safe to assume it will work.

Eg.

They should show up as

(Insert name)
(Insert name)

rather than
(Insert name)
(Insert Name) 1

I think so, anyway.

DM's can just change the name of your character around. Just call the rebuild New Jim, and when it's done the DM can change it to come just Jim again.

But for leaving the DM out. I think using the last name field has a good chance of working.

Should work. Also, can't you make a DM change the name of your initial character before you make a new one for the rebuild? Like, add a dot in the end or something, so the original name remains intact for the rebuilt character? I'm not too keen on adding some silly punctuation marks or middle names to keep my character's name pretty. After all, names that sound good and fit the theme aren't easy to come up with.

I doubt it works, because the issue is with character files overwriting eachother as far as I've understoond. And if you look into your NWN\localvault directory, you can see that the file names don't care about first or last names. It's just "vahndermane.bic", "kallywebber.bic" etc. In fact, I you might not be able to have two characters named Billyboy and Billy Boy, because the file name would be the same. I'm not too sure about this, though. Maybe they're saved as Billyboy.bic and Billyboy1.bic and NWN is smart enough to tell the difference, but I wouldn't count on it.

Has it been systematically tested that you can in fact change then name of an old PC in game in order to give that old name to a new PC? I used to theorize at much, but never tested it. I wasn't sure because I don't know if changing the visual name after creation actually changes the name of the character file. (If it doesn't change the file name, though, you should be able to do the opposite and just change the new PC's name visually after creating it with a fake name.) I guess someone who can look into the server vault and test some rebuilds could shed some light on this, if they're interested.

Woulnd't work, those names get assigned the same filename.

The best thing to do is give the new version a name like Rebuilt Miss T and have DM change the name to a proper one afterward.

Also, ask them to rename the old character to something else, preferably something that will fall to the bottom of the vault. I prefer something like Zzz old version Miss T.

Don't do this. I just had to go vault digging to fix a problem like this because the DM thought it wa sOK to have identical names in any way shape or form.

Do not do this, folks.

This gets weird because if they later create a new character with the same filename as the one you renamed, there will still be issues and we have to go vault digging. NWN is very weird and very picky with its naming system and it is simply best to avoid identical names at all.

A tiny additional thingy, such as a space, is a small price to pay for a nice and tidy vault/archive.

Yups. It lso helps later if you need to request leto vault digging. It's not as bad if you know the filename, but there are a few of you who have completely different filenames than what the character is.

I suggest adding one period in front of the name. Aside from keeping vaults cleaner and avoiding bugs it also is a way of counting the number of changes you make. Small thing but a good system for control
