I've been doing a lot of thought on the subject of Amian' coin. "Monty's" as they are named for in game seem to be the static trade coin for Amia and the the surrounding islands. Granted that others tend to pay in banknotes, gold bars, valuable gems, or whatever, they still get gold coin's on their time on the isle.

A friend of mine recently said to me... "Man, if you brought Jack into another campaign as he is you'd be freaking rich due to Amia's messed up economy." My immediate response without even thinking was "Eh, the gold exchange rate between Amia and the Mainland is severely different. It's like... Ten thousand 'Montys' for one actual gold coin on the mainland or something. So Jack would only have about 1000 or so gold coins." He replied "Well, that'd still be a lot..."

My question to everyone here... Would that seem like an accurate exchange rate? o.O I'm guessing a bit of tweaking either up or down would be needed, but considered our over-inflated prices it seems fairly close.

Edit; Also found this little number. Doubt it helps anything, but it's cool.

Don't bother trying to figure an exchange rate, it's impossible.

One-million to one!

Amia is like the Counterweight island from the Disc World novels.

Give my gnome ten million gold, and he'll print you a nice one trillion something note at the gnome testing range.

Even if there is a gold exchange rate, Amia seems to have magical loot and items up the ying-yang. Which don't have an exchange rate at all.

There is no exchange rate. The entire world is suffering from a grossly exorbitant amount of gold being mined and all the realms are afflicted by over gold.

Just assume that the gnomes in Lantan have been steadfast and earnest in thier turning gold into lead project. The proceeds of which have been shipped to Thay for use in the Red Wizards plan to make gold from lead and rule the world. This, in effect, keeps the cycle running and maintains gold equilibrium across Faerun.

Bioware has misled everyone from the very beginning.
The coins in your inventory have always been coppers.

Even then the inflation would be rediculously high compared to the Main land.

Unless the equation is 100 Copper = 1 Silver, 100 Silver = 1 Gold.

Based on the exchange rates on the site I linked it's much less than that, so it would still give people a high amount of gold compared to the rest of faerun.

If 100 "gold" on amia = 1 silver coin, and 100 silver coins = 1 gold coin:

Mantle of Epic Spell Resistance (40 Spell resist standard on Epic level PnP) Market Price: 290,000 gp

So that's..
290,000 gold
29,000,000 silver
2900,000,000 copper

I'd say if anything as long as 100 "gold" on amia is really copper, we're well below the "norm" for the rest of toril based on the level we're about >_> If it's silver, it's more the norm when settled for epic level gear and setting, based on our item balance compared to "normal" epic pnp items.

That puts the exchange rate at 10,000 to 1

Though I could have sworn 10 silvers equal 1 gold.. which would make it more ..."proper" with 1,000 to 1 ratio for Standard Faerunian gold coins. 10 gold equal 1 platinum, I believe or 100 silvers.

Well taken out from that link in the OP:

Nib (half-copper)
2 Nibs = a Thumb (copper piece)
20 Nibs / 10 Thumbs = 1 Shard (silver piece)
100 Nibs / 50 Thumbs / 5 Shards = 1 Moon (Electrum Piece)
200 Nibs / 100 Thumbs / 10 Shards = 1 Dragon (gold piece)
1000 Nibs / 500 Thumbs / 50 Shards / 5 Dragons = 1 Sun (platinum piece)

So 10 coppers equal 1 silver
10 silvers equal 1 gold
5 gold equal 1 platinum

290,000 gold for the mantle:
2,900,000 coppers for the mantle. Which seem to fit the cost for the Epic spell resist 32 Gear we sell around Amia from PC to PC

The puts the price of that mantle at two billion nine hundred million. To me that seems quite above the norm of what would be in faerun...

I think you may have interperated it as 100 gold on Amia = 1 copper. I think the statement by Dramatic meant that the actual gold in our inventory is copper, on a 1 = 1 scale.

My statement on if it was 100 Copper = 1 Silver, 100 Silver = 1 Gold is quite false, I meant it merely as "_If_ that were how it was converted". You are likely correct in your thoughts of it being 10 silver to 1 gold, I think it even states that in the webpage I posted in the OP. The only imperfection is that it's 50 Silver = 1 Platinum.

Edit; Crap, ninja'd while I went to get food with my message still up...

It does seem like a rough basis, though would it look more accurate based on PnP / Faerunian prices if each 'Gold' in inventory was a half nib? Not sure on the calculations on that.

I think it would be something around the price of 145,000 gold for such an item. Maybe. Would it be 290,000 / 2 to half the thumbs? I've always been bad at math...

Well the link that you posted is quite easy to follow..

If we assume that 1 gp in your inventory equals 1 copper:
10 gp in the inventory will be 1 silver.
50 gp in the inventory will be 1 electum.
100 gp in the inventory will be 1 gold.
500 gp in the inventory will be 1 platinum.

So as stated above the 290,000 gold market price epic spell mantle as put in the guide for pnp would cost: 290,000* 10 = 2,900,000 gp in the inventory, or 2.9 million.

Alternativly we could assume that 1gp in the inventory equals 1 nib.
2 gp in the inventory will be 1 copper
20 gp in the inventory will be 1 silver
100 gp in the inventory will be 1 electum
200 gp in the inventory will be 1 gold
1000 gp in the inventory will be 1 platinum

And make the 2.9 million cost for the cloak double to 5.8 million gold.

So a reasonable exchange rate for inventory gp to actual FR gold would either be 100 to 1 or 200 to 1. Though since you can't give away half a gp from the inventory, I suggest we make 1 nib = 1 inventory gp for a more accurate wealth scale.

Then again it's easier to think in a 100 to 1 ratio for most people, as you can just hop the comma two numbers to the left and get proper GP value rather than change any of the numbers.. Besides I doubt it'll ever be an actual rule or norm on Amia as a whole...

True, people do find it much easier with a 100 to 1 ratio rather than 200 to 1. But, you must admit that it does seem more accurate. 2.9 million is "too easy" to come by, and most people refuse to sell epic goods for anything less than trade. Which sets them at a high high coin price if even mentioned such as "Six million for the Phalanx Greaves" I've been given before.

On the matter of it being a rule or such... I agree completely. It'd be freaking awesome if it was tossed in the Journal or something, but I wouldn't want to ask that of the DM's / Dev's.

But as for me... Jack will bring this up quite often. I think I'll start setting his prices based off of these exchange rates!

Ok since my counterweight island theory doesn't seem to be catching on. Lets try the other end of the Disc.

"There is more gold in an equivalent weight of seawater. In a sense, then, Amian is on the gold standard in all respects except the one of actually having any gold to speak of"

Amia runs on platinum and the sweet smelling farts of Waukeen. Look at the average Joe peasant and what they should have access to, then take into consideration just how much 'gold' spawns randomly out of some random adventurer. Prices are inflated, the open market is a joke, and enchanted arms and armor sell for more than enchanted gems ((gems that are traditionally more valuable than worked metals)). By the good graces of Waukeen, adventurers have yet to completely ruin the economy of the Island but truth be told that is about all that's preventing it from happening. Even the housing market is a farce ((IC perspective here)) for a house in slum-like Uhm costs the same as a fine apartment in Cordor or any other town that is pseudo-well off.

Hence why someone brought up the fact of all "Gold" being "Copper", and further from that my thought of it being a "Half-Copper". Those two things alone almost destroy most of the inflation we see.

On a side note, if you make note it's _Enchanted_ Armour and Weapons that are worth more than gems. Original Armour and Weapons are still worth less than the Gems players trade for in-game. The only difference is that people don't use regular arms and armour as much as they look for enchanted gear.

Even viewing gp as coppers or half coppers does not solve anything as all you are doing is scaling down a large topsy turvy mess into a smaller one. Check prices to the PHB and Arms and Equipment Guide. Items are still inflated, the housing market remains a universal mystery, and "new" money spawns randomly from each slain creature. The closest thing Amia resembles on such end is either No More Heroes, or for you trendy nerds, Scott Pilgrim Versus The World.

Meh. I think nations and stuff would have something more substantial to trade between themselves other than gold. I mean it's a fantasy world. Alchemy works. And even then, you can use Wish I know to trasmute substances like iron into mithral, so why not granite into gold?

Seems like we should have some uber-metal in the Realms that cannot be recreated through magical means, only found. Would save the problem of inflation, from an RP perspective at least. You know you couldn't walk into Waterdeep with your 300000 gold(after "copper" deflation) and buy half the mansions because the rest of Faerun has already switched to Unubtainium quarters.

Enchanted gems are only of worth to those who use them for rituals, spells, and research. Even then, most scholar's prefer to do their research on non-magical gems.

I know of several merchants in-game who have nothing to do with gems of the Magically Enchanted variety. Those who do want "enchanted" gems are usually wizards, sorcerers, or dragon-kin.

Well, as far as the player-economy works, they actually need worked metals, and not gems. You must remember that you are dealing with adventurers.
As for the housing market... *shrug*

EDIT. Also, SCOTT PILGRIIIM! WHHHEEEEEEEE! ...But leading off from that, killing monsters does not just randomly give you gold, it is assumed that your characters loot these monsters, a boring task that no-one bothers to RP. And with the copper deflation thing, which I think is sound, you don't even get that much...
And as for spawns without pockets, maybe you loot them for.. scrap metal or something.

well, comparing 3.5 edition pricing to amia, it looks something like the difference between the pound and...turkish money, I forget the name...drachmas? or something...basically 1000 is equal to one pound.

so, since houses and muchly rare items, Ioun stones for example are worth millions, and dnd 3.5 barely incorporates millions if at all, ever, the 1000:1 ratio seams to make alot of sense.

of course we all know the economy is pretty random on the islands, and its down to RP and sensibility when you decide how much to charge for that +5 shield you found on that illithid/something else.

The word you're looking for is Zimbabwean Dollar. 231 000 000% inflation rate and growing.

I know the reason behind it and thank you for understanding the hunor. What I want to know is where did the monsters find the gold? Or, if meant to be a simulation of what their belongings (not items but stuff like their 2 gp shirt and such all added together) would sell for, I wish to know where all the gold the merchants are handing out so easily is coming from. It is a rather cyclical issue of someone is either counterfeiting or perhaps Amia is the place at the end of the rainbow.
