Okay, long story short, my computer sucks and I am getting a new one (:D). I do not, however, know what graphics card to get. My initial choice was to get an Nvidia GT430 but, upon researching, I learnt that, apparently, Nvidia cards don't like NWN...
Should I get a more expensive ATI card?

Most "<graphics card brand X> doesn't work with <game Y>" is complete bollocks and just another way of saying "I suck at troubleshooting". Both nVidia and ATI work fine.

All modern cards have trouble with something as old as NWN, however there have been some mentions of extra trouble with the latest nvidias.

Changing the version of drivers has been rumoured to fix it.

Well, this here thread doesn't seem to bode well, while this one has people openly stating that ATI cards are better for NWN.

"This is not an insignificant problem -- ATI can get it right, what is wrong with Nvidia?" etc.

Do not go 400+ Fermi with NWN. Cloak/Bowstring/Robes will infact lag you, if you get that "bug". You get locked at 20 FPS with a GTX 570, I can't imagine what a 430 would be.

After trying many things to fix it myself, I think I read on the OpenGL forums that the renderer's for 3Dstudio max, etc were just incredibly slow compared to it's predecessors. OpenGL 1.5 and such seem to be borked. But then again, I'm sure some people have it working fine, or we'd hear alot more complaining. I tried it with the 570 GTX EVGA reference card, so whatever you do, don't get that.

At least that's my experience. I returned the card, and just went with a AMD XFX 6970, which turned out to be better anyways.

My 6970 works just fine with NWN. Just turned shiny water off and it's 150+ FPS .

Then again, the old 260 GTX C219 card I had worked fine with NWN. Anyways - that problem isn't going away any time soon, so good luck =P

My other choices are, really, the Nvidia GT220 or an ATI 5570. Trying to keep the price-range low, and am leaning towards the 220. Would this be any better than something from the 400s?

I updated my Nvidia drivers and my nwn got worse. I don't know what to recommend. Whatever kind of cards that were available when nwn came out I guess (?).

WHAT!? The whole point of getting a new computer is so that I can run newer games, as well as NWN!

HD5770 with ATI Drivers works perfectly for NWN.

I haven't had one issue. Just gotta remember to set AI to Standard.

I don't have that option! Getting it from this dodgy asian warehouse place, so I have a limited selection. Cheap though.
There's the GT210 for $10, GT220 for $35, GT430 for $50, the ATI 5570 for $60 and the 5670 for $80.

Should work fine. Better than all the cards you mentioned, other than the 5670. Low power requirements too. What type of power supply are you using abd at what resolution do you play at?

Not sure about the PSU, but I'm sure it's fine. I play at 1280x1024, though I might get a new screen sometime soon, too.

As I said in the other five topics about this, it runs acceptable in Ubuntu linux with nvidia. RDD wings, cloaks and bowstrings as well as some hak monsters still lag, but its playable. There are some people doing bug reports etc with nvidia, but when and if the drivers are fixed isn't clear.

Oh well, the ATI card is still a better card, and it's not like I have any reason to want an Nvidia one in particular.

Well, I've digged forums a bit and two days ago an nvidia technical guy said in one of their forums that a bug report has finally been filed, so there is hope the issue gets fixed in the future, eventually.

Linux is a niche product. A lot of people don't find "Install Linux to do this" an acceptable answer. Mostly because most peoples find Linux (Ubuntu included), lacking as a general user operating system, and non-existant as a gaming operating system. Wine Emulation is still not an acceptable alternative.

Its common practice for most linux users to have dual-boot anyhow, so you can install Ubuntu as well just for one game to play it acceptable. I see no biggy in that? A 12 year old can install Ubuntu nowadays. NWN also runs native on linux. Take my suggestion for what it is and pass it if you find too much hassle, its an option nothing more.

You'd be surprised by exactly how many people over the age of 12 cannot do basic things on a computer. I know quite a large number of people who play NWN are less then computer literate. A good number of people who play NWN only play NWN. They don't use their computer to play games otherwise. Just to browse the net and do some text documents.

My mother for example players doom. But could never figure out how to duel boot a computer. Saying a 12 year old could do it means very little in terms of computers, any techie can tell you that. Anyone on computer support for a week would scream it at you. Your also asking someone to reset their computer everytime and load up a different OS, just to play a game. For a lot of people, that's a big pain the ass.

I would say the average computer user doesn't know how to duel boot an O.S. with linux. Then run NWN on Linux with WINE. As well as do all the stuff they did so easily on Windows in Ubuntu.

Dude.

Read my above posts and the others in the other threads. I am giving an option for those who want to go that extra mile instead of buying a new gfx card all together. I wasn't posting "hahahaha go install ubuntu fucking n00bs".

This sounds like an user that only needs Ubuntu and no Windows at all. Especially since for a computer illiterate person Ubuntu is easier to learn and more secure to use. Linux is difficult to learn only if you already think you know perfectly well how to use computers and then find that your knowbledge does not apply in all systems the same way(i.e for experienced Windows admins). Me and Dorrit have installed Linux for most of our grandparents, parents, sisters etc., and thus gotten rid of annoying "FIX MY COMPUTER OMGOMG" phonecalls(except for the ones that follow from the net cable being unplugged of course). :)

Only reason to really freak out like Selvec did is if you absolutely must have a Mac for fitting among posh graphical designers, or if you are a hardcore gamer who absolutely needs every Games For Windows -game out there. Otherwise it is a perfectly valid option for pretty much everyone, and practically the only option for serious scientific computation for example.

And: NWN is NATIVE under Linux, doesn't even need Wine. It just works.

Hendrack, my response was something I'm honour bound to give as a Windows Loving, Linux hating, techie xD. Its nothing personal, I only hate you for your choice of OS *nods*.

The thing is Silvarus, if someone wants to do other things, or play other games for example, its an exercise in looking at the WINE lists and hoping they work. Where as with Windows, they work. Simple. Its the fact that Windows lets you do so much with the GUI intact, and allows you to do these things with the peace of mind that its designed to work on the system, that will make me always shoot down Linux suggestions and insist the person uses windows. Any issues with it not working, are software related, and not the O.S. .

Because 85% of software is created for Windows alone. Its a fact that Linux isn't as "safe" as it claims. Rather just that nobody uses it enough, that nobody designed malicious software to target it.

You have quite a narrow view on things if you shoot down suggestions because of some personal vendetta against an OS. Just don't post in other linux topics please, since you obviously are not objective and borderline trolling.

Dude. I could not find replacement for my Linux software for Windows without jumping trough thousand of loops. I might have to write half of it myself, and building software for Windows is as painful as things get. The migration problem works both ways. Insinsting that Linux should be Windows and do Windows software the Windows way of course should be shot down, since it will never work between any competing OS:es.

Also, the whole gaming thing: Having "Games For Windows" work on Linux, OSX, BSD, Hurd, Haiku or whatever is like making XBOX games run on a Playstation or Nintendo box. Wine is not a sucky project for not making everything work, it is an awesome miracle for making most of the games work when none are originally intended to. Linux is not Windows, and once you keep that in mind you can forget many shoulds and woulds and start using it as a system of its own.

Any other software than games... I would not even worry about finding FOSS replacements for Windows software, I would worry about finding Windows versions of all the software I am used to in a world of Free and Open software.

Linux evangelism is understandable, as Free Software is an ideology of awesomeness and greatness, as is Apple fanboyism since it is practically a religion, but why be fanatical about supporting a harmful international monopoly, when monopolies are harmful no matter how your glasses are tinted. I do not particularry hate Windows, since the OS other people use has no impact on my life (besides infected botnets of course), but I have never been able to understand why anyone would be emotional about a monopoly they do not directly profit from.

I support windows because it works for me, and always has. I find most issues come from the user, not the operating system. I have used several linux distributions in the past years, as well as Apples (I did some Graphic Design courses and thats what they use), and I hated both of them. Ubuntu wasn't as smooth as it claimed. It was smooth, because you couldn't do anything but the basics with it. OSX was a horrible slow laggy jumbled mess, and I hated it. The simpliest functions where a nightmare to learn and do, and advanced fuctions where downright impossible due to it's proprietry nature.

I never said Wine was bad because it doesn't play every game. I said that Wine was the only alternative, and not a viable one because it can't play every game. That doesn't mean Wine is bad, never said that. It means that as the only alternative to getting games working, it doesn't do what a lot of gamers want.

I will likely never use Linux for anything but networking. As far as networking goes, its a nice product to make firewalls, routers and proxies out of. But I'll never use it for Common Use, ever. It simply doesn't make the standards for a gamer or even really general use.
