Just out of curiosity.

Are monks ever any good? I havn't seen a single monk that's been really impressing.

Edit: Also.. Any Builds that go great with Dwarven Defender? I'm thinking there are far to few of this prestige class on Amia and am considering changing that.

Yes. I was in a party of monks doing Beholders. Scariest thing I ever did say (two were dual-kama, the other two were str-based fist).

Well. That's not that well-rounded of an evaluation. I have a shifter that can solo Beholders pretty well.

21 con 13 dex 13 int 8 wis 6cha 20somethin' strength.

It used to be awesome, but it sucks monkey balls in pvp due to high crit range weaponary basically ignoring the damage reduction. With the dev change your a bit more chunky now, but with the heal pot change you can't just quaff heals with impunity.

Best defender build i've played with is Ops Paladin DwD, although i also see a lawfully minded rogue/dwd/sd as being pretty funky aswell. 19 rogue 5 dwd 6 shadowdancer.

And the con based chap is better of being a wizard with epic DR, 6 dwd, 23 wizard levels and one rogue.

Ahh! Too much input! Which do I do!?

Although I will say it was an interesting read that gives me insight on your experience with it.

A lawfully minded rogue/dwd/sd could actually produce interesting RP with it's 'funk'. It would a Dwarf enthusiast (they all are) that defends his people and dabbles in more discrete affairs, using traps, ect. to further aid the Dwarven kind.. I guess he could be something like a Dwarven tunnel fighter. Lays traps, springs from shadows, and defends his clan!

What's Ops? There is something wrong with Pally/DwD? It was my original thought for a build simply because I at least know that Paladins have the ability to rock.

Improved Critical is worth it on pretty much any melee build. Besides that, you don't really have many options as a monk with lower than 14 INT. Might as well pick up both that and Great Fortitude.

Non-epic Skill Focus feats are only usually worth burning on if you don't have any of the essentials. When they are taken, it tends to be on sneaking (Hide or Move Silently), or detection (Spot or Listen). Even then, though, eh. There's almost always a better feat that could be taken.

fist monks are inherently difficult because of the damage range and crit range, your looking at a max of 25 ish per hit maybe with alot, of strength, you cannot weapon master with fists, though with some tweaking you can gain a bonus attack, at 16 monk take 5? fighter levels, get weapon spec, and then, get to 20 monk, you should have an extra attack due to quality AB spending in pre-epic. (at this point 6, the most i've seen being 10, before mage/cleric/bard/other people basically's buffs, this is done via kama's, and not using so many stat points buffing strength.)

as for skills, move silent. you can lose people just by cornersneaking, even team mates. trust me on that one, I had enough trouble keeping up with a monk this one time XD also hide, listen (since you don't get spot, or, spam on spot in a class that lets you I guess.) tumble, discipline. lore? etc.

also if you have cleave/great cleave I wouldn't get circle kick aswell, there is some sort of delay bug or something.

three types of monk imho, strength, wisdom, and dex. dex better supports kama's, though i'm sure you could make a build capable of overwhelming/dev kama's, with improved 2 weapon etc for the 10 attacks...-that- would be gnarly. however I tend to think thats why the damage is reduced so much.

*breaths* so that said, you probably want to not focus so much on damage wth fists because its not there, the key is more to do with staying power and accuracy. I mean, six hits, maybe even 7 with flurry I forget, is a fair amount if you land them all, and provided you arn't taking damage back you can pretty much stop anything.

I could go on for days with monks, my favourite class. from the top of my head, would think that, in order, 16 monk, 4 fighter, 4 monk, 6 sd, would land you somewhere in the realms of win, would land weapon spec/epic spec, and focuses, i think, hips, enough melee focus to not worry about spells and jazz and get dev and the like, immunity to god himself, and 6 reasonably well rounded AB attacks per round, aswell as great cleave for the menial monsters.

would also reccomend at least 13 int for expertise, if not enough for improved expertise.

yea I could go on alll day...a good defence is the best offence is the key phrase here if your looking for a pure hands free monk ^_^

ed: why circle kick is not a good idea.

As a monk, you are first and foremost a speed whore who seldom if ever dies and with enough levels, can ravage mages with impunity. And thats your lot. A pure monk will never have great AB nor damage, though passable in both terms if you go str based. Dex monks with kamas will give you the most attacks and AB togheter with insane AC, but it's damage will be measly indeed.

For a str based monk, you could do something like this: Start with 16 str, 14 dex, 12 con, 10 int,15 wis, 8 cha. Put one point in wisdom, the rest in strenght. You can do this with both human and dwarf, stats will be identical. Skills that are handy are disciplin, tumble, and whatever else you feel like having, such as listen, or maybe heal and lore. Up to you. For an extra attack and more damage you can mix in 4 fighter levels pre-epic and grab weapon specializationa nd another in epic to get the epic version for a total of +6 extra damage. Take EWF, Armorskin, epic prowess and Epic skill: disciplin as epic feats, and Improved SR if you can afford it.

If you do go pure monk, you will sit with OK AB and Damage, nice AC, mind immunity and enough SR to make any mage cry.

You are better of going lower AC and more higher strength and more int on a strength based monk. What QPR has written is fine if you want to be the low end of mediocrity on a monk build.

15 wisdom is way to much, you do not want to be investing any level up ability points into wisdom whatsoever. 14 is enough.

A monk wants disarm and imp disarm, it actually screams for those two feats because during the levelling process with some fast clicking and target changing and so many APR you become a mobile disabling cannon. Better even than a mage because you don't need to rest.

Yeah no longer works unarmed but it does work with a large weapon versus small and tiny weapons.

Basically you get a +4 bonus per weapon size catergory larger.
You get a -4 penalty for Imp Disarm attacks.

Ergo if you are wielding a Greatsword the bonii should appear like this.
+12 - 4 versus daggers.
+8 - 4 versus shortswords
+4 - 4 versus longswords
0 - 4 versus two handed weapons

The extra AB will only roll if you beat the opponents discipline check apparently.

It does work, but no longer works as unarmed counting as a weapon size larger.

I would say do not spam Imp Disarm ever in PvP unless you are an unarmed monk. Even as a DM I wouldn't do it.

Aren't you contradicting yourself now, Mosh?
Since it's no longer Bonus-For-Unarmed, Imp.KD Works ...just as good?

No. Its still great on a monk, for the mentioned APR and the fact you can afford the feats due to the four fighter levels in pre-epic and free KD/IKD. Unarmed still counts the weapon as one size larger in regards to disarm attempts so you never suffer more than a -4 penalty.

So what I gather is that the point of monks of the server are..

1. Disabling
2. Annoying mages
3. Saves whores

But they're hardly a front-line fighter.. Or will do well in a mono e mono against a decent melee build because disabling them isn't enough to really end it with a mediocre AB.

Monks are just fine. DwD is an odd bugger, but can be made to fit nearly every build just well, even though a substitutive class often functions better. Five or six levels of it is all you need, unless going with the DR heavy bastard.

P.S. The Pally20/DwD6/Fighter4 I snatched from Uce, but it's a fierce one even though you'll cry after UMD.

Naivatkal: theres some good monk advices in the previous pages in this tread. Before you do something you'll regret, maybe spend 20 minutes looking for them.

Svensk: Why the 23/6 combo?, For as many sneaks as possible and imp KD I guess. (but KD aint that great on a hafling)
A high lvl Rogue (IMO) is either 19 or 25 lvls. If you stop at 19 you still get 4 extra rogue feats, that would open up for either 4 fighter lvls (weap spec) or at least 9 monk lvls (imp evasion). Worth a thought.

Cool. I like the very different nature of the build.
Sorry, I was skimreading on a tight time budget earlier today. That's the Ftr7/WM5/DwD18 that Mosh mentioned. Hugging mobs with Flame isn't a cost effective way of working, or at least wasn't until the Phoenix Plate came in, and now I suppose you could hoard them. The exception is against bosses, where it makes financial sense. Even the Heal nerf doesn't matter; typically Windreaper would be toast on only one potion.

Being a WM, it hits acceptably hard, so it's just an unusually robust DPS platform.

With hindsight, flooring AC was a mistake. The build actually works better with the 38-40AC it can get as a twohander or the 45-47 as a sword'n'board; that reduces the incoming crits from the mobs by enough that it's worthwhile.

I spent a lot of DCs on my guy's gear, so he ended up at 35/- Slash, 31/- Pierce, 31/- Blunt.

As Mosh said, it's not great in PvP because everyone crits so often. I don't know of a build with such a huge difference between quality in PvM and PvP.

I'm not a DM, and not even really a Developer, mind.

i'm looking for...something, regarding the options for mummy dust...from what I have heard I am guessing there is one of each (ish?) sub type, i'm not looking for specifics just something to go by so I can mull it over. i've only seen the evil ones and the construct which is like, default or something...and the sidebar has no info about it other than epic necro focus improves it, but in another thread I read that only applys to the original mummy selction...

like, good, evil, outsider ? elemental (more than just one??) ...etc??? i'm all for RP but it would just stop me if I got there with no clue. attention to detail and all >_> not asking for each one and its stats btw just, what are the rough basic options?

Are the abilities worthwhile? What is the point of investing in a class that only lets you get five levels out of it? Can I get equal or greater abilities and such from other classes in place of it? What would synergise with it well? Is it a good class or is it a joke in terms of practicality. Does anyone actually use it? I don't think I've ran into a single person who has/does.

What's a 'not-really' Developer? Anyways, that does sound like it could be fun but if it will cost DCs it's out of my reach..

Okay, so on the flipside, what sort of build is a 'glass cannon'? Or does the most damage?

*nods* Aye, I've seen them and they have been quite helpful.
I've been thinking of taking either Great Fort or a Skill Focus on something. Not sure if I should go 20 Monk/4 Fighter/6 SD, though. Wasn't thinking of really making him sneaky, so that pretty much negates Hide/MS for Skill Focus. In that case, I could always whore out a ton of Listen by going with a Rogue, but then his INT isn't that high so it might not be feasible.

I'm beginning to wonder if I seriously gimped him with the original stats I picked, plus since I dunno how 'worth it' Discipline was to take :/

Need help picking out Favored Enemies & Pet for a Svirfneblin ex-miner Ranger exploring the Underdark (mostly B).

The idea is that he's going to be wandering/leveling only in UD (maybe sometimes happening on surface areas linked to the UD). He will, if possible, only get his gear and items from drops - he won't be visiting towns/cities/merchants - so he won't have stacks of potions and widgets to help him. He'll mostly be soloing too, so survivability is important.

Need a pet that's ready at the get go and can survive as is. My Svirf most probably won't have the flameberry & awaken spells. He also won't have stacks of potions to help him out.

Very cool idea, Ticket. Not confident of any builds I give you for such a purpose, however.

'If you hit them', That is.

I'd figure, As a WIS based monk, That your AB isn't Top-Dog really?

Yep, that's the problem. Only 42 AB - and that's with maxed Dex.

Right, trying to decide between builds for a human, bastard-sword BG:
10 ftr / 20 BG (I presume this is possible?)
11 ftr / 19 BG (10/10 pre, grabbing EWS)
10 ftr / 19 BG / 1 rog (tumble/UMD dump)
10 ftr / 18 BG / 2 rog (not sure about this, since I lose the last epic bonus feat and 1d6 sneak attack).
11 ftr / 18 BG / 1 rog (10/10 pre, grabbing EWS + skilldump, same downside as above)
11 ftr / 17 BG / 2 rog (I don't think I'd lose anything I don't by cutting down to 18)

In short, I'm trying to create a melee BG, and am not at all interested in being a cleric on top. I really want to be as BG as possible for RP, but will sacrifice a level or two to make the character all-round more solid (the difference between soulcrushingly evil and slightly less soulcrushingly evil is academic). If I do grab two rogue, should I take one level preepic, and one epic, or both epic?

As for abilities, was thinking:
Str 15 -> 22
Dex 12 (full AC in full plate)
Con 16
Wis 8 (had to sacrifice something, but losing spells hurts)
Int 10 (tumble, UMD, discipline)
Cha 14 (is this enough?)

Edit: I suppose I could interchange dex and wis, or lower con to 14 to more wis.

Gonna try the Min-AC Route during the easier areas, Then attempt the Higher AC Version on the higher level instances.

But it's one of the most interesting and hopefully 'Fun' concepts around.
We will see how it develops!

fist monks are inherently difficult because of the damage range and crit range, your looking at a max of 25 ish per hit maybe with alot, of strength, you cannot weapon master with fists, though with some tweaking you can gain a bonus attack, at 16 monk take 5? fighter levels, get weapon spec, and then, get to 20 monk, you should have an extra attack due to quality AB spending in pre-epic. (at this point 6, the most i've seen being 10, before mage/cleric/bard/other people basically's buffs, this is done via kama's, and not using so many stat points buffing strength.)

Hi, my completely not optimized monk would like to talk to you about his 35-45 damage per normal hit and his 80 damage criticals. With his fists.

I, personally, would go for the 11/18/1 version at a glance, but that last epic feat could be pretty nice... You'll definitely want the Tumble dump.
If you do end up taking two rogue levels, take both epic, as this will maximise your BAB.

Glyph doesn't like using maths for planning builds.

I think it's a flaw.

Go for 20 BG. Hot RP!

And with the recent nerf; Bg's need 20 levels to use +5Divine favour.

Worth sacrificing the 6 AC, 4 damage and UMD? I don't want a powerbuild, but I also don't want an intimidating BG that will be laughed at by the neighbourhood kittens.

3AC. You can Put skillpoints as Cross-Class.

But, No. It's not worth it.

Hmmm, only 3AC ... that could be worth it. And the RP kudos is certainly very nice, although the lack of UMD will hurt. Badly.
