I was just wondering about the climate, tbh. I don't know how cold it gets in winter, how hot in summer ... I'm not even sure whether it's closer to the equator or the poles.

Glyph wrote: for how mortals become gods, I would research cyric and the time of troubles, not a bad read, could make a movie out of the plot there. a short answer would be something along the lines of epic luck. imho.
I don't think challenging a god for a shread of portfolio works, its all or nothing. or the approval method, which requires ao's direct intervention, which is about as likely as a pig learning spaceflight.
there are also ways to lose a portfolio that differ from becoming defeated the usual way, and I don't fully understand this part of the lore, but dead gods seam to not be dead, everyone and their grandma seam to come back after a period of time, and since the spellplague didn't/hasn't yet/won't occur, a few gods even dodged a semi-canon dimise.
would like to find alot more source on the gods, especially divine rules regarding how the power structure works, also regarding demon lords/archdevils/other near deity power beings. You always need Ao's approval. Ao sets the rules and decides whether to let interloper deities (like the Mulhorandi pantheon or Kiaransalee, semi-recently) establish their influence in Realmspace. But you probably need some other method to actually achieve divinity, Ao just puts the finishing stamp of approval on the paperwork. By a shred of a portfolio, I mean a god needn't necessarily be destroyed and stripped of power; you could simply wrest control of, say, midnight from Shar or navigation from Selûne, diminishing them in power. Check Faiths & Avatars and Faiths & Pantheons, I guess. Ed has some very useful comments over at Candlekeep, I bet. Then there's the stories of individual deities you can find in F&A as well as Demihuman Deities and Powers & Pantheons. Gods are, to some extent, creations of imagination. That's why you can't outright kill one for good, typically: if enough people keep on believing in you, they will secure your existence. Of course, this is muddled up by gods pretending to be eachother, planar prisons and all sorts of mythological baggage. Don't try to make too much sense of it, IMO. Mythology and imagination is an instrumental aspect of religion.

dang you are correct, however, though not canon because it wouldn't have occured, yet, how did asmodeus gain deity status?? http://amiawiki.shatuga.com/index.php/Ao <-- pretty much explains what I meant before with the rules rather clearly, and confirms your point aswell. ed; thanks for the source pointers I shall be reading those asap. ed2: apparently demigods do not come under the portfolio clashes rule. also gods from other realms need ao's permission to arrive aswell apparently. imho this is a very clever way to give this option to the dm/'s of a campaign.

No idea about Asmodeus. I think it's a lore hiccup, since from what I gather Asmodeus is specifically not a god and wouldn't want to be one, because his position secures him much greater local power.
But yeah, I think it's kind of the demigod "thing" to represent a more narrow and specific portfolio of a greater god's portfolio and be subordinate to them, whether willingly or unwillingly. Personally, I'd like to see more demigods and saints in the Realms, and more lore about the cults of those that exist.

Asmodeus probably had some funky subscript legal clause in the Pact Primeval that allowed him to ascend. We'll just have to wait forthe inevitable novels, I guess.

Pact Primeval is/was silly. WotC wants us to believe that Gods don't read fine print.
Then again, they also want us to believe Monks are Psions and Cyric is pretty much the deific equivalent of O.J. Simpson.

Still Spell: As the caster does not have to move his hands to cast the spell(for somatic components at least), is it reasonable to assume he can cause the spell to originate from an arbitrary point on his body then?

Woo. I'm a bit out of touch with the current atmosphere, but I'll keep it in mind. Local legends like Nabessa and Salandra (if nothing as major) seem interesting.

There's plenty of lore on Shevarash. I mean things like the Bear spirit of Evermeet or the saints of Ilmater. Maybe there'd be a cult of the Shards of Selûne. Demigods are usually rather powerful, but I specifically wish there were more saints, local divine heroes and minor demigods serving under the great gods. Not gods who had their own churches, but they might have dedicated orders within the master god's church, or independent groups like the followers of Nabessa years ago on Amia.

yep demigods are ascended mortals usually, though rank wise it can mean a god has lost power and is now a demigod rather than the mortal route. shevarash is a good read, heres what I can see. Quote: history/relationships: nearly six thousand years ago an army of druegar and drow poured fourth from the underdark and slaughtered most of the attendees of a meeting between surface elves and dwarves, intended to renew their alliance. vengance, a short patience, drow hate, and maybe druegar hate could apply to a follower of shevarash. folio includes: hatred of drow, vengance, crusades followers: AA's, archers, elves, fighters, hunters, rangers, soldiers, sorcorers (I don't see wizard but I would assume it could work.) clerics pray for spells at dusk, 'midwinter night' is a holy day of sorts, and his title is 'the black archer' in laymans terms, you are probably an elf, and you have an unnatural want to kill all lolths, if not even just drow altogether. or at least thats shevarash's opinion. ed: some warriors goals include 'exploration' of the underdark, I think this is the most anti drow deity I have read about.

There's always Quasi-Deities. Divine Rank 0. I always figured they would be more like Saints and local spirits. A lot more interesting IMO, because they can be worshiped(and if they're worth their salt they might be), but to no avail. They can't grant spells. But they can still "answer prayers" in their own way, if you talk to them. That's kinda the thing with a cult. It's a trade off between how close you can come into contact with the divinity and how powerful he/she is usually. That's why I always thought Angel Cults were a neat idea. Your average Joe might figure let me worship/pray to this thing I can see and touch for myself on a regular basis vs some lofty thing I can only contact through zealots.

rank zero deitys are children of gods and humans/other. this would make them more akin to jesus than the saints. a saint implies they we're mortal and did something so epic they are no longer one. I can agree with some of the points though especially having a cult for half-celestial lv0 deitys.
correct me if i'm wrong but I figure level zero's are likely to be live beings, or jsut on vacation, since they have little divine power to go with they would have to do the grunt work themselves, rather than through a chosen or otherwise.

I don't believe quasi-deities are only the sons of gods, I just thought they were the main example.
Mortals can go from mortal(no divine rank at all, not even 0) to Demigod (rank 1-5). It's not unrealistic to assume they can just as well be raised to the middle ground of Quasi-deity.
Seems to make a lot more sense to me to have them go through quasi. Sort of as a "screening" stage before a god would invest enough power in a mortal to become a demipower. "Yeah, I know you're a great servant and all, but before I make you an exarch under me, let's see how you do when people start praising you and you actually have some responsibility of your own." Making sure they can deal with the pressure.

Quasi Deities are also called "Hero Deities" and could, yes, be the spawn of a god, but are also sometimes things like a mortal invested with Divine power to fulfill a specific task, or even a powerful servant elevated to "Sort of god" status: These are more prevalent in 4e than they are in 3.5. Two examples in 3.5 I can think of would be Finder Wyvernspur, who became a Hero Deity thanksto Tymora when he fought Moander and killed him, and then became a full deity. There's also the woman Mystra possessed when she birthed the Seven Sisters. Though it didn't really matter combat wise, she was a quasideity/Hero Deity for the duration.
You don't need divinity to be worshipped by a cult, though. It might help, but all you really need is the force of personality, and the cult will inevitably follow!

One could argue that Johnathin Leohnard (Cordorian Minister of Health and Public Welfare) has or had a cult following.
You don't need to be malevolant to have a cult.

I think I remember who you are talking about, I remember a rather less often now seen construct aswell =D
new lore question, i am honestly lost once again with this one. ritual casting, ie more than one caster, the closest to core source I have found is the varient rule 'incantations' on srd d20, however my question goes slightly deeper than that.
could a non-wizard/sorc/cleric, with a reasonable amount of lore, act as a master of ceremonys for such an event? (ie. read from a tome, instructing the mages, and dealing with material component aspects, like incense and such, while the spellpower focus on the main event ?)
I am specifically interested a varient of one of the examples within the info on that site, but i'd like to not say more until I have at least planned it out, and deffinatly would need a dm around for the effects/backlash should it fail, if and when it occured.
I'm not refering to ritual based magics, such as gate, I forget where I read about the cleric spefic ones also but the fact it occurs in chapter one of the first nwn is poking my thinker as if to say 'you know this foo' !'
ed: I say non-sorc but actually I do have a level of it, though I reckon thats not enough to participate in the main focusing of uber feats, the examples I have seen are all caster 6 aswell, though I believe there is some combination of caster levels going on.

The leader of the ritual often needs to be the highest caster present. So a non caster? No.

http://www.amiaworld.net/about/subraces_files%5Cuni_aasimar.html aasimar, imo. they don't have to be lawful or good. Quote: children of humans, who manifest celestial heritage from generations past. Their ancestors vary in type, from trumpet archons to couatls to servants of deities and whatever else inhabits the good-alinged planes.
Due to their heritage, most aasimar feel the pull of the divine strongly, and become clerics, or paladins if their ancestor was a lawful creature. Even those who stick to mundane careers are usually compelled to do good by their very nature. Evil aasimar, disappointed and embittered by how lesser beings treat them, are not completely unheard of.

All of those can fit in either Aasimar or Tiefling. There aren't any TN outsiders than I can think of. Now if you want a specific race for it, I don't believe there is one. Angelic and Fiendish are a lot more common when it comes to interspecies snoo-snoo. My suggestion if you want to emulate one is just to take a few sorc levels and take some spells that would be similar to the abilities of whatever creature you're saying they are descended from. That's how people get sorcerous powers anyway, powerful(sometimes extraplanar) beings in their heritage. (usually)

Well, elementals are often neutral, so Genasi springs to mind...
But basically: Aasimar have Upper Planar heritage, Tieflings have Lower Planar heritage, and we know nothing about Limbo/Mechanus descendants (those are the only two Outer Planes of neutrality on the Wheel, I think). Genasi come from the Inner Planes. But in FR, I guess specific godly realms could have neutral inhabitants, even if the realm and god themselves were Good or Evil.

Gah, dangit, I can't believe I forgot genasi.
Anyway, I'm skeptical about there being Mechanus descended folk. I mean...they're practically robots.
Githzerai span the whole LN-NN-CN axis, though. I'm pretty sure there can be gith/human hybrids too, as githyanki and githzerai were supposedly human at one point in time.
Meh. I wish there slaad-humanoid hybrids. But I'm pretty sure the way they reproduce makes it impossible for that to happen(spawning stone and incubation). Makes sense though, as a way to even out the mechanus creatures and slaadi. Huh. Now that I think about it, they are both "manufactured" in a way. Slaadi from the spawning stone and modrons from are made in a huge mother-factory I think.

Green slaad are sort of human-slaad hybrids, I think. Also, there's other neutral outsider types as well. Look up lore on the Outlands for a few others.

So if I wanted to make a neutral plane-touched that wasn't an elemental, I could use tiefling or aasimar?
