I've given thought to playing a drow priestess, however, my experience in doing so comes from another server, where drow weren't even called drow. There I had a wickedly wonderful priestess that I did enjoy playing. Here, however, I am concerned with screwing up and assuming the wrong thing, so I wonder if there is a thread that will give me a primer on Amian Drow society, such as who is who, what is what (things that a drow priestess should know by default of having learned growing up), and where to hunt/train?

Spend some time in the Underdark forums browsing around. It should give you the basics. Other than that, I might suggest starting off by playing a character that isn't from Amia. It will give you a reason for your character to be ignorant of local history and structure.

Just don't claim you are from another noble house/have some sort of rights backing you, without actually having them OOCly. That just causes trouble.

Maybe the noble house should stop bitching OOC when someone ICly claims to be an IC member of a house, ICly?

Agreed. Claim all you want IC'ly. A brand spanking new level 2 cleric can claim to be a Handmaiden of Lolth for all I care. My point is simple, though. If a character claims all sorts of acclaims and my character calls them on it, there should never be any OOC butthurt for either side of the interaction.

Just to play devil's advocate: claiming you are part of a noble house has a very OOC element to it if you have included their surname at character creation.

Nah, you're just metagaming their nametag.

We could go hunt together, if you are making a fresh character? :)

By that rationale, I can make a new character with ~Dawnguard~ (first group that came to mind, it could be any faction name really) at the end of the name and it would be legit? That seems a little suspect to me.

You could, as long as you didn't use it to, say, violate faction areas in ways the typical non-member could. It's actually a very effective - and smart - means of screwing up the people who metagame and can't just stick to the IC "What my character can see / know". You metagame; you read the wrong information, believe the false, you lose. You don't metagame; you read the information you're given, believe what would be believed, you'll likely win.

Drow houses are your name, though. If you're a member of House Guffaw, your name is Steve Guffaw, to show that you are of such noble blood, just like noble families in real life. The drow houses go further and grant the title to their retainers (d'Guffaw) to show that they too are part of the family.

I don't know when and how this started, btw. Some houses/players started using it when I was still playing, but others held onto tradition. I think it's silly. I do see the IC technicality of it, but it's not cool and it looks awkward. Back in the day, we were all Vandree, Arabett, Olath'Orbb or Kor'ali. There were no Ds. Oh, those were the days.

I dunno, the DMs have asked people to remove misleading faction tags before. Granted, I don't recall we ever ordered anyone to do it, but that was maybe because the tag wasn't identical. It has nothing to do with metagaming and everything to do with OOC lies. You as a person are intentionally misleading another person, and that's incredibly rude in any context, be it an RPG or a party. You can't really enforce honesty and good manners, but common sense should say douchebaggery is not OK. Why is it cool to deceive people into thinking they can contact you about faction matters and go joining a faction because they think it's active in their timezone, thanks to seeing you and your con buddy?

If you want to screw with factions just because you don't like their nametags, I feel a bit sorry for you. And I sure hope the DMs would grow a pair and do something in such a situation.

I must say that such is my feeling also. There's a big difference between misleading someone ICly and downright lying to them OOCly, which is what the nametag is. That would be like me putting ~DM Approved~ in my character description when it's not - it's the same level as cheating. If you present a House Poppinjay insignia, anyone who metagames that you don't have the house name above your head is an arse and should be dealt with appropriately. How is putting the faction name above your head when you're not a member of the faction any different? It's downright rude and very much akin to insulting characters in thought bubbles.

Added to this, Iron's point about join factions is also important - as much as we would like characters to join factions to which they are best suited this is limited by the fact some timezones (such as now) are dead, with less than twenty people spread across both servers. So players try to join active factions.

Maybe my past experiences here are deluding me - maybe the vast majority of people on this server will metagame the name out of existence immediately, and we all need to lie OOCly to cover up our IC actions. If that's so, it's a rather sad pass, since I have never had that sort of problem and have many good experiences in the past of people not metagaming. I should hate to think we are to be paranoid of the tiny, tiny minority of people who would cheat so blatantly that we have to lie on a completely OOC level.

I've never been harmfully metagamed on Amia. Ever.

I remember when drow were still allowed in Cordor, Bree couldn't go near Cordor Square without someone pointing and screaming "Drow!". Didn't matter what she was wearing. The common excuses were, "You smell like a cave." or "I see one spot of skin showing right there at the [insert spot here]." It also seemed that everybody in Cordor had spiders in their pocket, just ready to step on and squish and would pull them out whenever they saw a drow. None of this was every really bad, per se, and never had a truly negative effect on me or my character, but it was metagaming the name tag, pure and simple.

Well I count you as extremely lucky then, Iron. My drow wears his armor and helmet like freaking Master Chief all the time to avoid commotion IC, but to no avail. I can scarce recall a week where my he hasn't been metagamed in some way, be it ever so subtly.

"//Does he have any House Insignias visible?"
"//Why is your PC looking? I'm covered head to toe in armor, 5'8" with teal eyes and a swashbuckler's accent."
"//He's still about elven height, my PC would know. Does he have any insignias?"
"//You mean to tell me your character searches every character of relatively elven height for drow insignias right away, not just the ones with drow portraits or names over their head?"
"//Yes"
"//No."

Or my favorite

"*still covered in head to toe in armor and cloth* Hello there."
"GAH! Drow! Get away drow!"
"//Dude, wtf, you can't even see any skin."
"//I thought he would have had a recognizable drow accent in Common."
"//Did I emote an accent?"
"//...No?
"//Then he doesn't."

Long story short, I no longer have an obviously drow portrait and the bio mentions general physical features that would be noticeable in armor only.

That's not always the case, the family members have the house name as a surname, but Billy Jones (member of House Guffaw) is still Billy Jones. he may have an insignia depending on his station.
Drow Houses assimilate other Houses they defeat all the time.

Truth. Easiest case I can point out was when Salvatore showed Drizzt as a noble interracting with a commoner at Melee Magthere. The commoner was from a house but did not have the name, while Drizzt was evident as a noble because he had his houses name.

If a drow's name is the house name, then they are a noble of that house. Either by blood, Weapon Master, Retainer, etc... The commoners are from that house, but their name is not the houses name.

I was under the impression that when a drow house attacks another, they wipe out everybody of any import. It's against drow law to attack another house, but in the classic vein of "If nobody saw you do it, it didn't happen", they wiped out anyone who could blow the whistle on them. They assimilate servants and slaves, of course, but any and all with any ability to call them on the attack are killed.

Nobles have to be wiped out. The commoners are given the chance to convert.

I don't think I've ever been harmfully metagamed either. But I think it's 1. because I don't chat it up OOCly about IC stuff very often and 2. because I'm aware of when people are trying to play both sides of a situation and I just steer clear of them, even OOCly. I don't really like it when people have drow in different Houses and try to play the politics on both characters and such. Mostly because I know I would start getting confused personally, and even if it's unintentional, I just see many bad things happening unintentional or not.

And just because I haven't been metagamed does not mean I haven't been harmed by stupid OOC antics! There are worse things than metagaming out there. Meh. In my opinion, you don't need the last name if you're well-known enough. And if you're going to use faction nametags, drow Houses are definitely the most realistically viable. But honestly, the reason I don't like it is because they ring of bragging. Drow Houses don't too much, but especially now with the "d'" and the no "d'" stuff and people being semi-noble but not fully noble it's still kinda weird.

Noble drow people have switched Houses numerous times without even a defeat of the other House happening on Amia. I don't know how canon it is, but it happens on Amia and it's not against the rules as far as I'm aware.

Within canon lore, no drow would ever survive switching houses. Either their original house would kill them or the new house would kill them as soon as they'd lived out their intended purpose. The house you're born into is the house your in. Period.

Amia being a game and first and foremost being about having a good time, killing off characters that switch houses isn't very feasible.

Sure it is, people would just rather break canon, break lore, kill immersion by swithing houses like clothes rather than have anything bad happen to them. :)

House politics is a reason why I always tried to have my characters out of them. Sometimes, though, not joining a house is not an option, since becoming part of a house decides how much respect you can get most of the time from both lower and higher ranked characters.

You could be doing a great job with whatever function your character has in a city, but there is still a chance someone is either doing better, or is not as good as you, but just by having a house to back them up they will usurp what you were working on.

It (seems to be) how drow society works.

It's exactly how drow society works. It's not always how good you are, but who you know that really counts.
