So while I'm not particularly bad at building, I am having trouble coming up with a build that really fits the character concept I'm considering next.

The Concept: A demonic tiefer that I actually RP as a monstrous Human instead of the Amian classic of the emotional, misunderstood tiefer. She's got claws and fangs and a monstrous appetite. She'll have chaotic tendences and will scorn and likely attack Baatezu-lings. She'll probably do all sorts of nasty and gorey things, really. I'm making a monster here, basically.

I already rolled her once but the build I have her on now just doesn't seem to do the concept justice.

So I'm asking for ideas.. If you were making this character, how would you build her?

Love the character concept. Barbarian24/Fighter4/Rogue2 never lets you down and is also an easy choice for a n00b (no offence, there).

After investigating the class a bit more specifically, I don't see why you're missing out on Rogue. It is a common prerequisite for the Warsling Sniper and the bastards are awfully rogueish anyway. Rogue23/Fighter6/Ranger1 sounds perfect for one.

Not always do they need to be sneaks. Some are just footsoldiers where as others could very well play to the shadows.
Otherwise:
The cleric option can get decent damage for short bursts where as the ranger variety would have an epic companion to keep things distracted and could get bane of enemies which would be a nice 2d6 dmg bonus at all times vs favoured enemies. Reason I am avoiding the heavy rogue is that i am trying to keep Called Shot worthwhile. In order to do so I need to keep my AB high. Feat wise I am sold on:
called shot, point blank shot, rapid shot, weapon focus sling, and imp. Crit sling

You could make the Cleric25/Fighter4/Rogue1, then. The build is just awfully tight on feats, but keep Paladin in mind. Hendrack made a Hin Pally with throwing axes and it rawked balls and Ranger works as well.

The rogue build however gets a w00ty AB score. Mind, it's 14 DEX + 21 BAB + 3 WF and EWF + 1 PBS + 1 Hin Thingy + 4 Sling + 2 Rearing + 2 Aid and Bless - 2 Rapid Fire = 46, which is awesome for a sneaky type. If you really want that high BAB, consider something like Rogue16/CoT10/Fighter4.

If I went with something like that, would dex based or zen archery based be the better way to go?

DEX. Only if you're going Cleric or Paladin with a ranged weapon, Zen Archery is better.

Sounds fitting, although I usually get bored of straight melee-ers where you have to down ten potions, and then just click and attack, click and attack.

To be really honest, Barbarians need the least amount of buffing/potion downing out of all the melee classes. You click rage and rock socks - specifically Terrifying Rage, which turns any unprepared PCs (other than 20 monk and 10 RDD) and almost all monster spawns into predestined goo.

On the pally throwing axer DEX is better, because spell slots don't mean that much on a pally. You can make a spot paladin, which is awesome with a ranged weapon, but to get the necessary spot from items you totally gimp your characters gear. Divine might and EWS helps a lot with damage, with DEX you don't necessarily need divine shield.

On the cleric go zen archery for high spell DCs.

actually... *taking a bit from the discussion above here with the tiefer* How well would a barbarian 15/rogue 11/4 fighter work for the Sling user? Would get the terrifying rage bit and then 6d6 sneak attack with no need to run and hide. Wouldn't need to rely on called shot so heavily either as the targets would be running from me instead of at me.

1.) You want 16 barbarian over 11 rogue. 11 rogue nets you 1d6 sneak attack; 16 barbarian nets you the bigger, badder rage.

2.) Called Shot will be just as important as you'll want to use the Called Shot: Leg to keep them in range.

Remember, Tiefling... that means +1 ECL. :D

Still think the idea is perfect though, just gonna have to drop a level somewhere. Off the cuff I'd say Barb, but I've never played a Barb before, so don't take my words as gospel.

Isn't 15th Barbarian when Greater Rage kicks in? Or are we different here than http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Barbarian

24 Barb gives much better rage bonus than 23 barb, as they are mostly calculated on + something every four or eight levels. If you can live without evasion, dropping rogue might be better.

Edit: Barbarian rage is different here. Check the sidebar under classes.

Thats incorrect, 20 Barb gives you the maximum bonii required on Amia (AB and Damage). 24 gives you an extra rage and a feat. The reason why 24 4 2 is so exceptionally solid is because of the feat stacking and taking either Thundering Rage and Terrifying Rage or Terrifying and Mighty Rage.

I dont know if im allowed to ask this here, so please just tell me "no" if its an illegal question

I've seen bows with point blank shot available over the counter in kohl, do slings with that feat attached exist on amia?

If possible i'd like to know if there is a vendor or if they're in the loot bin only.

Separately, just curious, how hard is it for disco / machiavelli to make DC items with feats attached? is that labour intensive for them or is that routine?

Findamental knowledge on whats available here guides my build decisions, so i had to try at least.

Thanks!

No slings that I can think of, though I am a little outdated on Amia's gear. There are cloaks and other equipment with the feat, however.

It's not hard for them at all. DC Gear can actually be imported by any DM, and added feats and the like are easy to do. That said, you would still require quite the request to get extra feats on your gear. It certainly isn't impossible, though.

Ranger21/WM5/Ftr4 with a 19-20 or 18-20 weapon is a seriously heavyweight damager against the five races that can be Favour Enemies, but the AC is a major problem.

Ranger21/WM7/Rogue2 offsets the lack of Epic Weapon Spec by extending the crit range, and you get the lovely UMD/Tumble there.

Smart choice is Rogue, kudos choice is Ftr.

For barbarian, do the bonuses to damage gained from the various rages work on/with ranged weapons?

IE: if you take mighty rage would that +5 vampiric regeneration be added to a bow or sling?

Also, would the bonus to attack/damage from the regular rage be applied as well?

Everything is applied, but I'm not sure if Vampiric works with ranged weapons. If it does, it is also applied.

And regarding your build: You really want to go Barb17/Rogue13 over Barb15/Fighter4/Rogue11, since the Barb17/Rogue13 nets you Epic Dodge which is delicious.

Would need to blow a feat then on shield proficiency I think. But very fun.
Or not... Just checked the wiki again.

Looks like I am going to be tight on feats though:
1 point blank shot
3 weapon focus Sling
6 rapid shot
9 called shot
12 dodge
15 mobility
18 imp. Crit Sling
21 great dex
24 great dex
27 terrifying rage (must be barbarian level)
30 epic dodge

could lose rapid shot, after all as the ol' saying goes: you fired twice and failed twice as much as you should have.

was...better in order of the stick...but the point is valid.

ed: but with high ab you can make awesome use of it.

Best sling build: Halfling rogue. Purebuild.

Decently fair starting dex, and focus on dex with level improvements for a very nice AB with the sling (including +1 racial bonus with sling, and +1 from being small)

By level 30 that's +15d6 sneak attack, so you don't even need to be strong. You could easily squeeze in epic dodge and some Improved Sneak Attacks in there.

Say you squeeze as much ISA as you can while keeping epic dodge (for your escapes to get to to a better flanking position) you'd have +20d6 sneak attack damage. On average from just the sneak attack on its own that's 70 damage per hit. Not taking into base damage from bullets, extra damage and elemental weaknesses versus enemies. That's a halfling warsling sniper right there.

And with rapid shot and haste etc. You'd literally make all the fighters and dev-critters jealous.

What makes you say that? Corner sneaking isn't something I would like to mess with if possible.

Corner sneaking? Just flanking. Having a decent hide and move silently does help if you need to flee (epic dodge saving you a lot of hassle) and hide behind a rock or a tree or building or what have you.

I have a sneak attacker that doesn't even use stealth. Using a stave :D with a fair amount of strength making use of the x1.5 Str damage bonus from a 2-hander. Good times.

In a group as a purely support role, I can see how it would excell in damage. What about on it's own without something else to distract the targets?

Yea, alone he'd not do so well. But UMD opens a lot of doors. Things that disorient groups. If you tale blindfight you can make a lot of use from darkness items. Scrolls that summon big things make a great decoy. There are options.

Mobility for Blind Fight and put Luck of heroes for 1 and just move everything else up a slot until 15. LoH is debatable. In general, dodge and mobility aren't needed, unless you're on a really AC deprived build. Also, contrary to what NWN says, and as it says on NWN wiki, dodge is not a requirement for epic dodge. Also, you really need to squeeze in an epic weapon focus. +4 ab > +1 AC/AB from Great dex.

Alright, I have been mulling over my whole drow idea and I have come to a conclusion:

I am most likely going with some bard classes. My idea for her has evolved into an engaging and alluring, yet cunning and manipulative, drow and I do think that the higher charisma will be best suited as a bard. I am still not sure about the full class spread, but this is my idea for stats (after racial modifiers):

STR 12
DEX 14
CON 10
INT 16
WIS 10
CHA 18

I think the 16 INT and 18 CHA is well suited for the sort of character I am envisioning, and the 14 DEX will be good for the skills needed to be a useful assassin type character. Hide/MS are obviously a must, and Bluff/Persuade is going to be rather high as well.

Spellcraft: How much is it needed for a Bard? I know every 5 ranks gives you a +1 to rolls vs spells, but is there any need beyond that?

Listen/Spot/Search: Are these kinda worthless if they are not in large amounts?

As for Perform, is it best to only get it as high as necessary for whatever level Bard I make her in the end? I am considering just 11 Bard, so is anything over 18 worthless?

Spellcraft is just for the rolls vs. spells and, less importantly, to identify spells cast. 9th level casters also use it for certain epic feats.

Dunno, but it's best, if you need to, to just pool all of your points into one, probably Spot.

The Perform is pretty much just an RP thing, if you feel that your character is a better performer than that, go ahead, but, buildwise, it doesn't really matter. Also, remember that your Charisma bonus counts towards this.

You're doing it wrong. Start out with DEX 19, don't take any Great DEX feats. Drop Dodge for Blind fight, drop Mobility for Luck of Heroes or Stealthy or Great Fort (for example). Then just EWF Sling and Armour skin and you're good to go.

EDIT: Anubis, Badger and Dire Rat make the best tanks.

http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Curse_song

Perform does matter depending on Bard levels and if you want a decent song.

Spot is always handy since a bard gets the +50 spot from items rather easy with bard song, UMD and clair/clair spell. But if you want to get the 100+ ranks in spot, you'll have to fit in SF:Spot, ESF:Spot, lots of WIS gear and you need a class to dump your spot skill like: assassin, shadowdancer, ranger, rogue, weapon master in epic. Dunno how that fits with your drow.

Alright, that's mostly what I though.
I do still wonder about Listen/Search/Spot, however. I just don't know how much you have to sink in it before it becomes 'not worth it'. I have a bunch of other skills that I can put points into, and just am trying to find a balance. I know 5 L/S/S at level 20 is worthless, but is 25 L/S/S? If it is going to drain too many points, I won't really worry about it for the most part.

Also, the stats: look good or is there some other suggestions?

You want 100+ spot be effective in PvP. You can dump listen more easily as bard because of its spells. You don't need that much of listen, perhaps Uce can share how much his mulan half-orc invested into listen. Listen is inferior though.

Alright, so Listen is rather pointless (I always thought that anyways), Spot is only really good in 100+ (hence an earlier comment about AAs and Spot vs 80+ Hide/MS), and Search is so-so anyways (I only ever use it for looking for traps and stuff, really.

So basically I shouldn't worry too much about it, which is what I was thinking anyways.
IN that case... *coughstatscough* lol

Also, I just realized something:
Search would be good for my character (in an RP sense) so she can check for traps before attacking someone, no? Only reason I think that is if someone is in their home, but I dunno.

And I ask about the stats just cause I want to make sure I'm making the best use of them for a Bard/(Rogue/ or Assassin or SD)

You won't really need all that many points in Search to pick up the traps on Amia. Also, with an INT of 16, I wouldn't worry too much on being tight on skill points. With an INT of 16, you'll be getting 7 pts. per level. I'd say that makes it pretty easy to max out the skills you're really going to need (Disc, Hide, MS) and get your Perform, Tumble and UMD up to useful levels. In short, I wouldn't worry about skill points, with a INT that high, you should have plenty of them to spare.

Always keep in mind that one can be an epic spotter or an epic hider, but it's quite difficult to be both. I've always found it extremely useful to be able to Hide better than Spot. You may not be able to see them, but odds are they can't see you either.

Search is useless in PvP. People have too high a DC in Set Trap to make Search worthwhile.

For a rogue relying on sneak attack dmg, is there really any difference between using a longbow and a shortbow? I'd prefer to use shortbow as it makes more sense for a thief (easier to carry, hide etc), but if it is very inferior to the longbow, i might reconsider.
