Specifically, if I make a Duergar, am I still able to take Dwarven Defender levels? I know if someone were to make a Tiefling Elf, they can't take AA levels because the racial type is changed to 'outsider', but I see nothing that changes 'duergar' to a non-dwarf racial type. Several people in-game indicated that duergar couldn't take DwD levels...but people in-game may not know. Also (since I'm asking questions...), do Duergar start in the Underdark?

Duergars are usually not lawful good, as I recall. So that is the only thing preventing you really.

reading the subrace descriptions, I would think either the gold or the shield dwarf fits the lawful good part better, since duergar "harbor bitterness and hatred towards the shield dwarves and their Underdark rivals" I would think that makes them chaotic/neutral at best, though not without reason. I guess it depends on your definition of lawful and good, and yes I imagine they would start in the underdark.

Duergar are, as you said, still dwarves, so they qualify for the racial requirement. They're usually lawful evil, so they meet the alignment requirements, too. However, note that the requirement is only that the dwarf in question be lawful and not lawful good.
There's nothing stopping a duergar from being a dwarven defender.

They're like arcane archers, I guess; I'm sure there's some weird lore behind it but who cares. It's just some cultural (racial) thing that dwarves learn about that no one else is allowed to learn.

Yeah i think you can but i dont think it would be much .. correct to take them, after all a DD is a defender of the dwarven ways... And they are quite different from their evil 'brothers' duergar...

Yes, defender of the dwarven ways--which are lawful and not necessarily good. Order and rigidity and strength of arms in defense of your ideals--none of this is restricted to being a good guy. In fact, that's pretty much the stuff of tyrants and militant underground midget extremists.

There are drow AAs and no one gives a F. Go for it, there have been plenty of duergar DDs in the past, even a duergar DD/PM.

You have to be good to be a dwarven defender???
I always thought it was just lawful and that they are defenders of what ever they want really. From the old traditions to "this my rock, you can't have it!" Dwarves are naturally tough and a dwarven defender has just trained and disciplined themselves to be better. Just like how a monk can be good or evil. Or am I completely wrong?

As for Drow AA, I assume they are OK as they are still elves, and still good at both magic and ranged weapons.

I would think having a 6-7 foot tall longbow in the underdark would be counter productive. Too bad AAs can't use crossbows.

6-7 foot longbows would be equally cumbersome in thick forests. Then again, you can always use shortbows.

Any class rules on Amia are explicitly posted, or enforced by NWN mechanics. So if you can take DD on Duergar, and there's no huge sign in neon letters telling you not to (which there isn't; Amia is all about not having such), you can do it. Of course, divine classes may Fall for combinations that don't suit their god and role, but even then it's an IC outcome. A Druid can become a PM, he'll just lose Druid powers in the process, for example.
There's nothing odd about Duergar Dwarven Defenders.
DDs are protectors of the Dwarven ways. Duergar are Dwarves. Duergar ways are therefore part of Dwarven ways. Protectors of Duergar ways therefore protect Dwarven ways. Not all Dwarven ways, of course; but neither do Gold Dwarven Defenders protect "all" Dwarven ways, because they don't defend Duergar ways.
About Arcane Arhcers: what QPR said.

I really didn't mean to make anyone's blood boil: I have a tendency to get 'out of the box'. Seemed pretty logical to me, and the RP is a no-brainer. I also didn't see anything about the scripting in Amia that would trash the idea...so I'm making the guy. Thanks folks!
