Our PC's are adventures. To make a real life parallel, they're soldiers. If a soldier is a jungle combat expert, but knows he's going to the desert, wouldn't it be stupid of him not to learn about desert combat? To that end, if a fighter sees his rogue buddy evading everything and dodging blows that he's taking full force, wouldn't it be wise for him to learn a few tricks from his buddy?

Any ideas or tips on this???

I have some trubbel whit the stats for this one...
What i come upp whit:
str 18
dex 6
con 10
wis 14
int 10
cha 16

But i would like to increase con so that rage will last longer. Any ideas what i can swap around... And i going for the 17barb/2Rogue/9BG build

You're already starved on feats: You're only getting 3 epic feats, which should be Armour skin, EWF and Terrifying Rage.

I'd just lose my hopes for getting Thundering not to even consider Dev. Stats for that plan would be:

STR 16 -> 22
DEX 6
CON 14
WIS 13 -> 14
INT 12
CHA 16

Or alternatively

STR 17 -> 24
DEX 6
CON 12
WIS 14
INT 10
CHA 16

My argument is that the game mechanics are IC. It's like our physics; until the likes of Faraday, Ohm and Volta came along, no-one knew the numbers behind a lightning strike, but everyone knew that you really didn't want to be hit by one. Until the equivalents of Newton and so on appear as characters on Amia(and aren't just stomped by the DMs for being a smartarse), then the numbers remain OOC, but the effects can't be anything but IC because they really do happen to our characters.

If you say 'Oh, it's just learning a new skill/feat/etc' then there may as well not be any classes, right?
In most cases the skill/feat is tied to an IC event such as Monks joining an order and taking their vows or Blackguards bargaining with an evil Outsider, but basically: yes. On a purely OOC balance level, it's really good thing that you cannot fit Deathless Mastery, HiPS, 15d6 Sneak Attack, Divine Might/Shield, Bane of Enemies and Barbarian Rage onto one character, so that's that argument over for me.

And, pray tell, how is someone stupid for not learning a trait which their class type (for lack of a better way to put it) doesn't normally learn? It's called lack of a frame of reference, that is all.
I dunno about your levelling experiences, but on the way to 10, let alone 20 or 30, my characters tend to fight beside people from most class types at least once. You only need to see a badass being badass for a tiny wee while in order to be jealous of it, methinkles.

I'm planning on doing a rebuild for my str build cleric and was wondering the pros and cons of two handed weapons. I was highly considering rebuilding to Maul (skinned heavy flail) as its a favored weapon of Selvetarm, but the loss of 8 AC, 2 con, 1 str is kind of steep given the damage increase. The only way it could work is changing to a WM/cleric build, but that would be very steep for a freebuild.

Build now: 26 cleric/ 2 fighter (dev crit, longsword)
probable build: 27 cleric/ 1 rogue (going for a far more constant damage build, less of a one hit kill)

Only way it could work? Nuh, WM doesn't guarantee good functionality for twohandering, the sword 'n board remains superior.

To be honest, I had not looked at it from that perspective. Which really does surprise me, but that's beside the point. In any case, that's a very good point you made there and I cannot debate (I'd rather not call this an argument, but that's just semantics, I suppose lol) it properly. I do think I was considering it more on the path of 'How does one character decide to learn Evasion?' Looking at it now, I was over-complicating it, which is downright silly in respect to RPing and such, and it is easily justifiable that seeing someone do something is cause enough to try and learn it. Of course, I was going to mention earlier, and forgot, that I agreed with what ainjyll said on the fact that you can have your character ask his Rogue friend to teach him how to do some of that stuff. Which that certainly makes sense, and is essentially what you were saying as well.

I do think my reaction stemmed from the fact that I hate to see everyone taking Rogue (or whatever levels) just for a single purpose. That kinda make it bleh, ya know?

well, i currently use sword and board, but Id like to venture into 2 handed weapons. He's always been a cannon and not a tank (current build has him hovering around 45 ac buffed, which is abysmal from what I understand)

I was looking for a workable cleric build to use a 2hander, and the only one I could think of has a bunch of WM levels.

45 AC for a PC with cleric as their primary is pretty abysmal, but I also noticed that you have no tumble dump class currently, so there's at least 3 AC there (if you cross-classed for some reason) or more likely 6 AC. So, adding a tumble dump covers 6 of the 8 AC you said you lose from not having your shield. I'd say do 25 cleric/2 fighter/1 rogue and make sure you nab Divine Shield. With a CHA of 14, you can get to +8 if you buff your CHA to max (covers the loss of that shield for a bit). It'll also give you a discipline dump late in the game which is priceless.

Using 7 levels of WM in your build only leaves room for 21 levels of cleric max and most likely less unless you want to starve yourself on feats. That makes you pretty easy to dispel.

Yeah, but fgr28/rog2 should not be able to tumble as well as rog30. He wants evasion, fair enough. He'll never be as good due to his low reflex but the same is not true of skills. But since S.dumping is kosher in PnP, it doesnt matter anyway.

Why not? 30 skill points is 30 skill points. If they both have the same dex and same rank, then yes, it works the same.

Exactly. Yet, odds are the fighter has a higher STR and therefore isn't as good at Tumbling as the Rogue. Yeah, they've got 30 skill points invested, but the fighter probably has a +1 to his DEX and the Rogue has like a +12 or so (if they're "traditional" class builds, that is).... meaning you're looking at 31 compared to 42 or so... so, yeah... the rogue is a better tumbler, they just match on the amount of AC they get from the tumble scores. Let a DM plot need some tumble and see who gets by.

I'd guess Blackdragon means you can't get 30 ranks in Tumble from two Rogue levels since even as a 14INT human you'd only get 22.

Thus, if you're hardcore, you'll have to crossclass until you're close enough to hit 30 in the two. Then there's UMD to consider. You can get 30Tumble and 15 UMD 'cleanly' with Rogue3 as a bright human.

A SwordMage... How'd I go about building that? I took a look at the Eldritch Knight - and that seems the most plausable route, but without 40 levels... the build is incomplete.

I want to focus on an Assault Swordmage style - utilising brute strength whilst imbuing the arcane into their weapon. The best defense is a good offense, and I'd like this PC to be able to utilise enough spells that his grasp over the arcane entirely benefits his swordsmanship. He's to be Elven as well.

Also: Is Swordmage a 4e class... If it is I will void the idea based on principle. Because I've never seen the class before.

I do remember reading in 3.5 about something like that, but it may have been a prestige class.
There is a Spellsword prestige class in Tome and Blood, but that's all I can find right now.

Why not? That's assuming that tumbling is the core, central idea of being a rogue. Which isn't the case - it's simply a facet. That's like saying a person who majored in Biology and Spanish while in university won't be able to debate Christian theology as well as a Theology and Religion major. That may be the case, but you can't even make that generalization because that Biology and Spanish major may in fact be a popular, authored Christian theologian.

With a more down-home comparison, you would assume a "fighter" would win in a straight fight with any "rogue". He's a fighter! That's what he does! He's the best at it. But that isn't the case. You can't make broad generalizations like that. As a rogue, you are capable of not taking tumble. Why would you? Because ICly it brings an IC benefit - and it is simply a method that can be taught, learned, and used.

The best way I can suggest thinking of it is this: Most everyone who goes through a public school system learns Algebra. Why? Even if it doesn't specifically relate to your eventual career choice or specialty, it's hella useful. And just because you aren't a mathematician doesn't mean you can't do Algebra as well as one.

you can get 30 tumble with 2 rouge levels, but i'm not going to start encouraging skill dumping.

i've been thinking of rebuilding glyph, I am sad that my build turned out...its a poor spellsword attempt, lets face it. fighter/wm/wizard just doesn't work.

I was thinking either delete and start over or start again from 1 fighter. going for ? fighter / epic wizard. I have a question before I start on a rebuild request...I haven't had a freebie yet but i've also been thinking screw it, pure wizard...so we'll see I guess...

my question being, which is better for epic HP, boost con in epic, or get toughness and epic toughness' several times? and also which skills like spellcraft boost saves and such, a vast few do nothing but their specific jobs but um, tumble for one, spellcraft, discipline, all have relevance to combat. any I missed? taunt do anything useful other than...taunt?

thanks in advance.

For my STR based cleric (going 29cle/1bard) is it worth spending 3 x spell focus (evocation?), when he will end with just 20 WIS basic.
I can afford them but I could also use other sweet feats.

didnt think of dispelling... I'd really like to go for maul in my build, but the only way I can fathom it is having monkey grip. And I'm not too sure of the feasibility of that (25 DCs nonwithstanding). I suppose if I drop down shield size, but thats a discussion for request topics and has no bearing here.

Just make sure you've got some CHA to spare, which with a drow won't be hard, and you'll be fine. Even just 16 will net you 28 buffed which would be worth 9 AC. You won't be running on all cylinders all the time, but you'd be able to bump up your AC to a pretty respectable level for boss fights, PvP, etc.

issue is cha isnt very high on my priorities, with being a STR build melee cleric with 20 base wis for mummy dust...

I suppose I could drop down some str, as i wont be going for dev crit so i dont need 25 base there, but still its gonna be tough having over 12 cha

In a straight fight the rogue should and will lose to a fighter more often than not. Thats how it should be. The rogue has other tricks to even the odds. But thats besides the point and this is neverwinter all over: The fighter isnt even the best at what he's supposed to do but instead has been reduced to a dip class for EWS. Sad.

Err...yes, yes it does mean you cant do algebra as well as a dedicated mathematician worth their salt. I did my A level maths in school and got my A. Im not even gonna pretend im a real mathematician. I can't just go into a university maths class and think i'm gonna be just fine and dandy and understand whats going on. And I sure as hell can't say "oooh, hey, this university maths looks quite useful. Let me study for a week and skill dump maths to help in my theology class" and suddenly be just as good at it as the people who have been doing it for 4+ years and have a PhD in maths.

But then PC's are not normal humans thus lie outside the generalisations, so probably could do just that

Anyway, if you really want to use the maul then go for it. You'll just have to accept that its a subpar choice meaning D.shield gives you an AC score which is merely passible instead of in the heavens (no pun intended). Without a maxed strength the 2H option is looking even less attractive too. My advise to you if you must go 2H on a cleric (and it parallels what has already been suggested) is to raise cha as much as you can for D.shield. You'll need it.

Exactly. To have everything you want, you'll need STR, WIS and CHA and you can only really get 2 of the 3.

I do remember reading in 3.5 about something like that, but it may have been a prestige class.
There is a Spellsword prestige class in Tome and Blood, but that's all I can find right now.

Swordmage is a base class in 4e. A Faerun specific one no less.

Ah, I didn't check any books other than the core DnD stuff.

Strength based paladin/fighter/rogue. IKD a good idea? Worth the two pre epic feats? Also - two great strengths or Epic Skill Focus Disc and Epic Fort? Already got epic prowess.

Any suggestions for a decent emulation for a Halfling Warsling Sniper? I am trying to make a build that makes using a sling a viable option.

Right, trying to make myself an assassin that I like. I have the personality and the flavor of the character sorted and am now trying to build something that fits it; short version is evil, calculating I don't want to make a HIPSing dexer and I don't want to load out on rogue levels, in fact I was hoping to take none at all. I'm looking at a minimum of 15 assassin levels and want the rest to be a bit exotic. I'm not fussed about being a total power bot and would love to dual-wield or use a double weapon.

I've tried making a Hobgoblin Thug type but the RP has been a bit to far from the original character concept.

Toying with going black dragon disciple after five levels of sorcerer. The failed mage route slots well into the PCs story and also makes me keen to stick with daggers and crossbows as weapons. If I do go that way then his draconic blood would be very much a curse to be endured... to assassin... if my life is to end here the hell with all of you.

Build I've started with this;

ordinary human
str: 14
dex: 16
con: 10
wis: 10
int: 14
cha: 12 (failed sorcerer)

ending on

str: 26
dex: 16
con: 12
wis: 10
int: 16
cha: 14

with 5 Sorc/10 BDD/15 Assassin

Was thinking double dagger dev crit or double weapon dev crit(sword probably. I know exotic weapons could give me double kukri but...ner...not as cool?) . I know the BAB, AC and damage output will really suck but the class composition feels nice for the story and the poison aspect of things.

Advice? Feat selections? I have an epic assassin feat that I'm sticking on epic reflex... there is a skill focus aspect there but I think the lack of evasion calls for a high reflex.

Just some advice on my lovable bard: Is maximise spell worth taking? It will help me limit the mythal slots taken by stat buffs, but its only useful for that after what i have gathered. And are there any other feats aside from imp crit and blindfight I really should take before 20? Right now he is level 11 and has martial weapon, lingering song, weapon focus, curse song and extended spell.

Delevel until you don't have Lingering Song any more. It wil be worthless when Lasting Winspiration comes along.

Yes, Maximise is worth it for the rock-solid +5 stat buff alone.

With your ebil Curse Song skills debuff, Knockdown is win on Bards.

If I were to make a 10 wizard/19 PM with 42 fully buffed intelligence, would his Wail DC still be 41 - 10+ 9 + 6 (Epic Focus) + 16?
According to someone, it's been changed on Amia.

Also, taking a bard level instead of a rogue one would be going too far, wouldn't it?

Depends on what feats you'd miss.

Either WIS or DEX based something. You really need to decide more on the character: Do you want it to be a rogue? A paladin? A basic warrior?

A Cleric or a Druid works well from what I've read about Warsling Snipers. Monk too since they seem to have the mindset to be one; besides, running around like a monk would be fun.

Elven swordmage would probably be best with wiz 25/fighter 4/rogue 1 or 26 wiz/fighter 2/rogue 2. The latter won't give you the yummy weapon focus, but gives you evasion and an extra epic wiz feat. Tenser's changes made it more worthwhile playing a swordmage/spellsword, so remember the spell.

I have a question about the toughness feat. I know that the HP gain is retroactive but does the feat stay active through further levels? Meaning if I take toughness at level 15 it will net me an additional 15 HP, but by level 30 would the feat effectively be giving me an additional 30 HP or just the 15 from when I picked it?

Caster level + 1d20 + spell penetration modifier

so 30+20 max+6, thats 56 spell penetration. if that doesn't work something is very wrong.

It shouldn't work, since Spell pen doesn't break through spell immunity.

if in doubt, blow it to peices =)

i'm about ready to start a self rebuild, but I thought I better post this here first, go for it rip it to shreads, point out all the flaws

2 fighter / 28 wizard

stats: str 10 | dex 8 | con 16 | wis 10 | int 18 (25) | cha 8

main skills: spellcraft, concentration, craft weapon, lore (to 33.)
CC: disc, tumble, spot, parry (to 16) and appraise (dump skill)

feats...exotic weps, WF bastard swords, expertise, improved expertise, blind fight, spell penetration,
greater spell penetration, toughness, empower, max, extend, spell focus cojuration to epic, epic spell penetration , GR, EDK, mage armour, MD, hellball

I have also been thinking spell focus for a better EDK, but I recall some talk of drow, SP, and why no one has enough...and being my main I would like this guy to have teh power...and yea...I decided to keep strength and wisdom at 10 rather than utterly spam on the abilitys...

ed: cleaned up a bit to represent some last minute changes in thought.

I'd much rather go with an even wizard level for more Tenser's AB. 24 Wizard/5 Fighter/1 Rogue would work. It gets epic spells (Though not that many) and epic weapon spec.
Personally, I prefer as taking as many wizard levels as I can; 28 Wizard/1 Fighter/1 Rogue, it's better again Mord's Disjunction, which can be very nasty on a character that solely relies on buffs. Also, incredible Acid Sheaths and a long-lasting Tenser's which can be Maximised for +6 health per level and +8 Strength and Dexterity.

Also, this is a bit off-topic, but don't just take your armour off to cast spells or, if you do, RP it. Maybe have a half-plate that is customised to be easily taken on/off?

Also: "If I were to make a 10 wizard/19 PM with 42 fully buffed intelligence, would his Wail DC still be 41 - 10+ 9 + 6 (Epic Focus) + 16?
According to someone, it's been changed on Amia." :D

As far as I know (I almost got the same wiz/pm build with same int mod.) the wail still got a DC-41.

You still need to worry about effective caster level and overcoming spell resistance. I really can't imagine they would change it and ruin the spellcasting variant of pale master builds. T'would be cruel.

I will have a look at my char when I wake up.
