Does anyone else ever have a problem sticking with one character?

First its Estar, then its a Barbarian Elf, then its Seer the kobold, then its who knows!

I cant even play any of them, but I spend so much time thinking of them!

Is there a word for this obsession?

I share this issue to some degree. Although I do my best to play them each eventually, it's just a matter of opportunity and my muse at the time.

It really does depend on mood...if im happy, good character, if im unhappy, emo or evil character.

It really helps my RP if I feel emotions like the character.

I'm generally good (though I do play two characters primarily, I may end up trying to keep it to one with the second as pretty much just someone off to a side).

I find myself always coming back to Jaocim. I really hate the tedium of leveling up another character from 1 - 30... But also, Jaocim is one of the most (in)famous Paladins on amia.. He has quite the reputation :)

..I go through this from time to time. Something will just..catch my attention. Or. Eh.

I used to DM, tabletop. I'm not used to being bound to a single character for any period of time. I work better with entire casts.

Mainly I play Ryan, for the fun of it. He's a lot like me

Ky'avel is when I want to let my evil side out.

Aedan is just for fun.

Not so much of a problem for me online. But if I'm playing anything single-player, I become intimately familiar with the beginning of the game. I'll have a great idea for a character, spend hours planning it out and creating it, then after about an hour or two of playing, hey I just thought of something else! I'm gonna go make that now!

That's why it's so much of an accomplishment for me to finish a single-player campaign, managing to stick with one character all the way through.

well where some people tend to change the factions of their characters, swap deities and aligments, and do rebuilds, other people make new characters. So, yeah, I have the problem sticking with one toon. I have like 10+ for sure.

I did for quite a while, but now I have realised that sticking to a narrower range of characters are developing those is a lot more fun. I am now down from about 10 or so to 2.

I'm up to ten recently that I would like to keep at the moment. Some for a simpple concept, others because I lvoe the character. However the intensitiy with which I play them differs from time to time.
I do notice playing a single main can be more rewarding in the long wrong.

With my time so limited these days I play who I want to play and when I wont to play them. Its really that simple. If there is a particular set of events going on in some place at one time or another then I may trot out a certain character to lend aid.

For example the last big elven patrol from Winya was completly devoid of any kind of healer, so it made sense for my elf to get 'recruited' for that lil spree. It actually turned out to be fun and was rather useful in the end.

Point being, you should never feel obliged to be any one character at any one time. This is a game, we play it for mutual fun and enjoyment. That cannot be the case when your left feeling hollow or that you should be doing something else and more to the point it inevitably comes across in a persons roleplay when they really cant be bothered.

This is the internet. We are who we want to be :P

Yes, I get this too. Quite badly, even though I have characters that I like playing, alot, I still crave for more and more. It's like a drug.

Sometimes little things set it off, like RP that I haven't enjoyed that much, or when you are in the mood for alot of RP but everyone around you seems to be in a "Yes, no, okay, bye" mood.

And other times, I just get alot of ideas for new characters and become anxious wanting to try them out.

Hunie for the last... what, 6 years? Daren for the last 4. A couple of other characters made in the middle mainly to help others XP. Now I'm planning on a new, permanent character, though.

has 5 toons total, one lost in some sort of weird blackish holeish thing...and one more I want archived.

the three I use are my main who I got really annoyed with and semi gave up (til I can write a rebuild request) then theres null, I got more into some faction stuff there, but then there was an issue of leveling past my teams other members...and theres one more i've been playing for a week or so now, my first and only good aligned character ever, including pnp.

I like variety as one might guess. also yea the one I want archived was one where four of us made a party of pirates ^_^ unfortunatly the captain disappeared, and I just don't have the patience to play a velsharoon cleric, makes me want to eat people.

I find I cannot settle into one character. The idea of becoming to emotionally attached to that one fictional creation is to great then if that is the -only- character that you hvae active. Then you find yourself raging against certain kinds of rp when you find it happening to this collection of stories and imagery that you have created and given form.

At least then with more than one character if you have something that happens to your character (and lets face it, happens to us all sometimes) and it annoys you personally then there is always someone else to fall back on to ease your mood.

It comes down to how you categorise yourself I think. There are those players I think of as 'Social' and by that I mean they play one character and exsist for every aspect of that characters lives (Personally I envy them that depth as I could never invest myself that much in any one creation, excepting maybe Belladonna) or those who are 'Role Players', to which I include myself in that list as I have several characters now who I switch back and forth between depending on my mooods.
Most of them are architypes of certain personality traits of mine, all reflecting different parts of me, but no one of them being to close. I play them for who they are as opposed to what I may like from them. In this way I find its always easy to go back to old favourites in new settings and constantly be amazed by the quality of some of the RP that is out there. It keeps things fresh, keeps them alive and why I keep coming back for more as often as life allows.

I would be careful about those categorizations of yours. I may only play one PC (none at all, but in general, yes) but I wouldn't dare to draw a connection between me and being social, or me and a social server, or to identify me by contrast as a non-roleplayer.

I have my own reasons for why I choose to primarily play one character (with a fractional bit of dabbling in other concepts), but I won't really get into them because I fear I'll come across like a prig.

YOU CALLING SKELETOR A SOCIAL......

some people play one person because you IC can gain more if only play one, I guarded the forest for hours on end, I gain good reputation with the grove and its defenders, on top of all other groups I help.....I turn into undead and I get more respect then some paladins,clerics...ect

players value OOC time IC, you cant claim to do stuff IC that you did not do, like guarding, spending the time get resources...ect

So I'm apparently not a roleplayer because I seek to create a deeper character and experience for everyone involved instead off palling around on a dozen alts that will never make a splash or leave any real lasying impact on both the places I go and the people I see?

Thanks.

Role Player. Not roleplayer, the differentation -is- rather clear hun.

But because some people obviously need it allow me to clarify...

I was referring to 'types' of roleplayer... the social and the role player. In my book neither is better or worse than the other. Both are as fun to be around. Put your hackles down lads. :D

It is the same word within a space and are often used interchangeably to mean the same thing. I suggest changing your word; the accepted definition has existed far longer. OVerall you're basically insulting both types of people.

Back to the original posters topic though as I feel a little bad for having derailed it...

I have at times felt what your going through. Normally when life is getting me down or when I am having problems in defining my characters or what I am doing with them.

Sometimes it is just a case of getting lost amongst the RP. Its nothing necessarily wrong, but I would say that it is more than likely a phase you are going through. Something that with any luck will pass in good time when you find yourself drawn to one character or another.

There are times when I have not visited amia for weeks on end and then for some reason one of the 'roles' of my characters calls me and I come back, recharged and ready to go.

But if you feel a general apathy towards it or cant decide then I'd suggest taking a step back for a day or two and see how you feel then :)

I do have one thing i'd like to add, I generally stick with the same character for a time, and generally I don't switch during gameplay, though sometimes if I am on B or something with null and no ones on I get bored of trying to solo and switch. sometimes the party people ball gets instant results but after a certain point I prefer icly grouping up anyways.

if you forced me to play one and only one character, i'm not sure I could...I don't generally pick the character by my mood either, the only thing that even bugs me anymore is unannounced pvp, like i've said before I try to follow pnp style, like in a campaign, suddenly a group of orc attack you, you don't just click and fight you gotta give it some "yraaaa!!! chee-arge!" or idk, other natural conclusions. obviously you'd want to click them before you start typing something in that case out of self defence.

there is no difference between social and RP styles, i've been playing RPG's since the master system and since they hit the net its been an awesome ride. regardless of weather you play more than one toon or not the best thing anyone can ask is to stay icly as much as possible and have fun =) of course there can be different styles of RP, theres the "is he afk or just really quiet"
type *looks at someone* the flamboyant, the "for sparta talk later" type, extremely emotive people, saying that people who literally play like the sims 100% of the time can't rp is a bit of a strech, and vise versa, the only thing that makes for bad RP is extended soloing in lowbie areas and running away from people you meet (which I have seen far too many times. without so much as a word. just a stare, and then on they go.)

(golden axe warrior was an awesome rpg, back in the day =D closest thing to dnd I knew back then. until I got the red box...well, that probably covers my opinion on this one, I say don't be afraid to try more than one, though I can see the benefits of doing so.)

We should all test our way into the world; And appoint the Trial and Error as we make our way about Amia.

Test new Characters; if you're lucky - You stumble upon something amazing. So don't be shy, Test test test!

At least then with more than one character if you have something that happens to your character (and lets face it, happens to us all sometimes) and it annoys you personally then there is always someone else to fall back on to ease your mood.

When something like this happens when Im on Jack I just go play a FPS to burn off my steam, or another rpg if absolutely -nothing- is going on that night.

She's talking about being a role player in the sense of playing different characters to fit different roles, rather than using one character to fill most of your role playing desires such as you playing Tormak as a deeper character.

Just to throw out there, I primarily play Jack and make him a 'deeper' character as Tormak mentioned he does with Torin though I will say I'm a Social RPer because I think it'd be cool to have Jack played with the depth that, in my soul, I know he deserves to show.

When things are slow one night, I may hop on an alt stereotype just for kicks and giggles. Y'know, Pompous elf, rowdy dwarf, mischevious fast talking hin, all that Jazz'.
