Note: This is historical documents and not the current Militia setup. -DM Gunz

The topic of militia in Bendir Dale has been controversial for a long time, and I am happy to present the fully discussed and agreed (by the townsfolk) upon roles as militia.

There are two groups that can be termed 'Militia'. The Regulars and the Irregulars.

The Regulars
The duties of the Regulars is simple. Border watch. The Regulars are under the command of General Nof Barshedge. The Regulars get frequent drills and get posted for long periods of times at gates and dangerous borders to the east and west.

Any resident may become a member of the Regulars if they applied to Nof, though the continual training and posting will mean you will have little time to adventure or conduct a regular trade or craft.

The Regulars are not a police force but they will stop entry any known banned person into the core town's gates.

The Irregulars
The Irregulars are much more akin to a real militia than the Regulars. The militia is formed 'on-the-fly' at any time of need or crisis. There is no permanent militia of Irregulars but there are two captains that any willing townsfolk can report to. It is the captains' duties to form a group with the sole purpose of defence of Bendir Dale. This defence may include investigation of nearby and neighbouring sites.

The captains can appoint any individual to a particular role based on what criteria they see fit, be it experience or interest. No willing townsfolk will be turned away from the Irregulars. Anyone willing to be prepared to defend their family can do so.

There will be classes during peace time that are open for any townsfolk to attend. These classes will educate potential Irregulars in how best to behave and act. Everyone's free to do what tey want with the knowledge.

Once any time of crisis is over, the militia disbands to enjoy the peace they deserve. Of course, the captains will remain in place ready for any potential trouble.

The Irregulars are not a police force.

The captains of the Irregulars are:
Captain Lyam Thornhill,
Captain Nina Thorrow.

The captains are to be voted on. Please send any two nominations of who the townsfolk trust to do a worthwhile job.

There will not be a nomination process then a vote on nominations, but those with the highest amount of nominations will be approached and asked to take on role as captain. They are free to decline, and if they do, the nominee with the next highest nominations will be approached, and so on.

The roles will be assigned in a tenday from now.

((Please PM me two names of who your characters would like to be captains. Like the mayoral race, please only 2 nominations per player, not character. If you have more than one relevant character, please post as though the one that you would consider most active.

Note: The reason there are 2 captain positions are really to cover a broad playing time that hopefully overlap. There is very little use in 2 captains that play the exact times, so please give time zone a consideration if possible, but that said: IC > OOC))

This will be an OOC topic dedicated to changes and updates for reference and discussion between relevant DMs, designers and players.

It will mostly be used as a sort of check list of things to do. I will edit this main post to adjust accordingly to development.

Bear in mind, this is not a topic for suggesting random changes and improvements, but to detail things that have had in game and in-character progress.

To-do

  • (out of game) Change the tag line of the Bendir Dale forum from "The Halfling Village" to "The Village of 'short folk'".
  • Change the name of General-Mayor Nof Barshedge to General Nof Barshedge
  • Move General Nof Barshedge to a more appropriate location. (Wherever Bobo has suggested). Both these points follow the election of a new mayor.
  • Removal of a uniform for the "Regulars". Not only has it been agreed to by Nof, the general, of the Regulars, but has been something of discussion for the past few years.
  • Update the law boards to reflect the current laws seen here.
  • Scaffolding or general chaos around the cave mouth. (And possibly Brogendenstein Dwarves if that has been approved)
  • Signs of digging at the north west corner of the map to show the ongoing efforts of Lyle and his team of developers.
  • Removal/relocation of the wolves on the north side of Bendir Dale. There has been role play involving Willow Maynare and Theos Gend which resulted on the wolves being moved on peacefully and unharmed. Done

// I would really be bummed to see the regular militia loose thier current uniforms. The Dale began as a predominately Strongheart fort wich expanded into what we now know as the Dale. It was a uniformed and disciplined unit of trained foot soldiers that cleared the path for the current village. The folks that had the honor of developing and creating the Dale put them in uniforms for a reason.
The Dale militia was never a rag-tag group of bumkins coming together on a few off weekends to shoot the breeze and swing a sword around. I think straying from that would be disrespectful to the original creators of the Dale. It would also, in my opinion, seem like a drop in pride and discipline if they just started showing up in thier own clothes after decades of a well dressed and matched appearance. Anyways, just my two cents.

It's not really about what they were, but more about how the town has grown. Think of it as Johanna's territorial pissings, or signature. If we were being stubborn and not changing anything due to IC consequences from fear of upsetting the creator of Bendir Dale then why would anything get changed?

I have a lot of respect for the effort put in originally but you must admit, the Dale is no longer the little hin fort it once was. It has grown into a multi-cultural living breathing busy town.

Is there any way I can send a mod with, say, 20 different custom outfits that can be imported into the module? Or can't it work like that?

On the matter of the Regulars, Do you think any gnomes would creep in? I've seen a lot of gnome activity in Bendir Dale lately, It'd be cool if the militia reflected this, maybe. Up to the DMs ultimately.

I don't really see the removal of the set uniforms as disrespectful to the original developers at all. They were in their uniforms for a very long time. Things change. Things always change. Amia shouldn't be a server full of server set "historical" structures like some real modern world. Things get destroyed, removed and replaced. C'est la vie.

I don't think the Hin in the militia would see it as a moral or discipline drop either. Thinking that way might be thinking a little too much with the "Human way of thought," I'd argue. I'd think that Hin would actually see that as a moral boost. I think they'd love being able to be themselves and express themselves a little more. It's the Hin way, really. I'm not sure I like the idea of a "rag-tag" look though, personally. Individualistic, yes. Rag-tag, I don't think so. Bendir Dale has come a long way and does indeed have money. I can only imagine how much gold has gone into the donation plate. It's certainly not a rag-tag town in my eyes. Not anymore.

Rag-tag for me is more one person being different from the next. Not in rags. Sorry if I gave that impression. I should have clarified.

Well, what is a uniform anyway? In every case where one is used, it's a representation of uniformity and unity of purpose, and a conceptualization that the whole is more powerful than it's individual parts. This is the same whether it's a fireman, soldier, nurse, or police officer. That being said uniforms can also represent different units of the same organization, however, in the case of Bendir Dale, is the militia large enough to support many different uniforms?

As well, I was under the immpression that the militia was to be split into two groups. The Regulars(NPC's), and the Irregulars(PC's). The regulars could and probably should have a uniform, and the irregulars can be the motley crew of Bendirs defenses. That being said, I do like the idea of the regulars having differences within their ranks representing the people making up the militia comming from far and wide for training.

Perhaps a single uniform for the militia but with differing colors representing different regions that members hail from.

Uniform also is used to help people distinguish authority, so very useful for militia.

However, I'd rather not have the uniform discussed here, because it's either something that can be discussed in game, and also because the rag-tag look has already been decided on in game. When the uniforms get removed, I encourage as much in-character reaction as necessary :).

// The dale has no library does it or does the small section in the Hinn Inn count as the library?

// I'm not sure if hins are ones to write really but wouldn't the older hins like books of adventures so they can reminise?
// Any enterprising person could write up a book of there grand adventures in the toolset or even send it to someone else
// if they arent confident in the toolset and they can be added ingame, i've seen this done on other servers.

// If there is no official library perhaps a building could be made or even the school could be expanded to accomodate, then
// we could finally clean up the books on the ground in the school! :)
// In this library it could have a back room, a printing press like room for the Bendir Dale paper.
// The press room itself could have some job system placeables relevant to the paper like a scribes table etc, I maybe
// being selfish here as Caith is getting sick of running to Cordor to process papyrus into paper ;)

// Anyhow its just a sudgestion, something to mull over perhaps?

*Prim comes back with two copies of the following notes & annotated map. She explains to Cindle that one copy is for the Town Hall and the other is for Foreman Lyle.*

Overview
[A] Town Hall becomes a Community Hall and is moving to the North
[B] Main BD Road and a Nice Central Bridge to hold us together
    [C] Convert to land
[D] Block the North West passage to the Mylocks with a small lake
    [E] Low traffic zone
[F] Use up the West Bridge to build the Central Bridge
[G] Extend BD wall to the cliff
    [H] Farming zone
[I] Trees planted along the cliff face
[J] Watchtower with slingers and a telescope
    [K] BD Fountain of Glory
    [L] Inter-faith temple
[M] Make good use of the cave
[N] Salvage East Bridge-Gate for materials
[O] Divert East Road to connect to the Main BD Road with The Regular Militia welcoming folks

Image

Ideas & Other Details
[A]
Old Town Hall area could become the Trade Zone.
[B]
High traffic road where residents and travellers would likely use when passing through BD or just moving around the town.
Merchants line up on the sides of the main BD road; where the Town Hall is.
[C]
Use the land we would dig up from [D] to fill this area.
Use the two large boulders here as foundation or materials.
[D]
Trees and a lake to naturally protect the Dale from the Mylocks
Dig and make a channel from the river to fill it with fresh water & fishes.
[E]
    Residential housing
[J]
    Place ballistas up here.
A beacon up the tower to signal a call for help to our allies.
[K]
So travellers would admire our town even more; and also a throwback to the past.
[L]
This will be a symbol of the religious heads of the pantheons associated with Bendir Dale residents: Yondalla, Garl Glittergold, Moradin & Titania.
[M]
Emergency bunker for residents to evacuate into in case of trouble.
Bell tower on top of the cave.
Beacon on top of the cave.
    Crafts merchants.
    Underground lake.
    Grain silo.
    Forge.
[N]
Salvage what we can from the bridge without making it stucturally unsound.
Put traps here so travellers who aren't banned in the Dale would use the central BD road instead.
[Others]
Lamps outside our walls & around town to aid us spotting hostile sneaks.
Remove easy access to the southern hills from the southern road.
    Tap into aventurine ore veins.
    Public Square/Circle.
    Decorative Trees.
    Fool's Rush Inn.
    Tree Houses.
    Gardens.
    Forge.
    Parks.
    Trees.

BUT, we must also remember that Bendir Dale is not exclusively a halfling town.

Places where books are said to be held: The Town Hall, The classroom/windmill, Muck's store and the Hin Inn.))

Since the RP involved and notes taken by Primera, I've used them to guide my mapping of a new Bendir Dale.

Here's a picture of the general map. There's a lot more involved, of course, though I hope I'm not stepping on any toes.

I've terraformed as little as possible, only really changing when things can't line up or have been discussed ICly.

Here's a screenie of the fountain from the north west road. On the left is the temple and on the right is the community hall.

A group of halflings and gnomes blockaded the bridge leading out of your town, demanding people pay respects to the Spider queen in varying forms to pass.

I'd suggest the guards stop such behavior, as it limits trade from Bendir towards the forest and other cities that lies beyond. Someone is also quite likely to outright attack them and will end up with someone getting killed.

This coming Thursday (or Friday, depending on where you are) we're having a festival pretty much dedicated to Arvoreen. So, what I thought I'd do is dedicate a thread to him, his ways, and his worshippers for discussion and information. I'll likely do this for other deities at appropriate festivities. (I can't wait for Brandobaris, because I have a LOT to say about that trickster)

So here it is.

~Arvoreen~
The Defender, The Vigilant Guardian, The Wary Sword
Image

Dogma:
"Vigilance against attack protects the community. Prepare an active defence, drill continuously, and leave nothing to chance. Put down danger before allowing it a chance to rear its head. Seek out allies, no matter how unorthodox. Stealing from other halflings or allies is never acceptable, but thieving is not dishonourable when employed against enemies to better the odds in later combat."

Almost all races have a god of war, and halflings are not one of the exceptions. War is not what many would associate with halflings but when their settlements are under attack they rely almost entirely on the defensive nature of followers of The Wary Sword.

Arvoreen (arr-voh-reen) is incredibly protective of the halfling race and any of its settlements scattered across Faerun. As such, his followers defend homes of halflings and prepare diligently in case of aggression aimed at halfling kind. These followers are also encouraged and prone to participate in regular drills in martial arts, weapons training and tactics.

Arvoreen is worshipped by halflings, fighters, paladins, rangers, soldiers and warriors. His portfolio holds defence, duty, halfling warriors, vigilance and war. Arvoreen is a Lawful Good intermediate deity in the halfling pantheon (Yondalla's Children). His clerics are restricted to LG, LN, and NG alignments and can pick domains from Good, Halfling, Law, Protection and War. His favoured weapon is "Aegisheart" (short sword) and his holy symbol is two crossed short swords. Like all of Yondalla's Children, Arvoreen's home plane is Green Fields.

War and Peace
The Festival of the Moon (Autumnal Equinox) contains an important ceremony to Arvoreen's faithful called the Ceremony of Remembrance where followers gather to remember the names of fallen comrades and any that gave their life in protection of the community. Arvoreen's clergy have the tendency to be serious and quite intolerant to jokes and frivolity. As any can imagine, during peace time this makes them unpopular. Perhaps considered too worrisome or harsh. They believe that most of the problems faced by the community are the results of courting enemies by mixing with other cultures and therefore prefer a more isolationist philosophy. A seemingly xenophobic philosophy not shared by the majority of lightfoot halflings. Though, unpopularity soon turns to respect when the community is under threat.

Arvoreen prefers a reactive as opposed to proactive agenda when considering dangers facing halflings and their communities. During these times of need his halfling servants strike back precision and decisiveness thanks to reconnaissance missions and an almost unhalflinglike strict regimen of martial training. This mindset and work ethic makes him very popular with strongheart halflings. Lightfoot halflings, however, while appreciating his protection, seldom rush to enter his clergy.

Trueswords are an elite order of Arvoreen followers that travel from community to community spreading word about local enemies, movements and logistics. They also share defensive arts to any that are willing and able to learn in the name of The Wary Sword.

Relationships with other deities
Arvoreen, of all the halfling gods, is most closely aligned with Yondalla, Cyrrollalee, and Urogalan. He disapproves of the moere capricious members of the pantheon, such as Brandobaris.
Evil deities, especially the patrons of goblinoids, incite Arvoreen to great wrath. He opposes Bane, Cyric, and the 'Deities of Fury'.

I would assume he would have an indifferent view of Sheela, due to her ways. Urogalan is arguably the biggest odd ball, but he's still very strict. Sheela and Brandobaris are odd balls in the pantheon because of being much less strict than the others, as well as not being overly goody goody. They stray the most from the ways of the other Hin gods and their Lawful ways.

Although Sheela and Brandobaris may be oddballs within the pantheon, I do wonder if they represent the bulk of Hinkind better than the other gods do. I feel like Hin are more usually Neutral than Lawful or Chaotic. Although I suppose most Hin are more likely Good in nature, rather than Neutral and definitely both over Evil -- they're not known as the "Good Folk" by other races for nothing.

Arvoreen, in my eyes, represents the Strongheart way of life, and only an aspect of it. I think that between Avoreen and Cyrrollalee, the Strongheart way is represented almost in full. As a matter of fact, and this is probably a unpopular opinion, but I think Cyrrollalee represents the Strongheart way more so than Arvoreen does. Yondalla really goes without saying because she has a little something that relates to all subraces really.

I got some logs an planks lookin fer a use. Need to hear from Miss Willow they be used proper an for good purpose. I not counted them all yet but I got plenty. As the borderlands of the south side of Amia Forest yer use of lands in a "balanced" fashion be my primary concern as a bulwark against wrongheaded development. If the concern be satisfied, the wood be donated. I'd want a verbal response from Miss Willow as she be one of yer kind and knows my meanin' an aims without me having to talk much.

I haven't been playing my hin long but I have read alot of lore info, peryroyl is more relevant to ghostwise halflings, and anyone involved with nature, farming, druids, etc, not that she would only look out for ghostwise, all hin are like family ^_^ and family is important.

as for clashes, I doubt between hin or hin gods there would be much of a clash, one night of partying is pretty much a way to balance between the tame and the wild, I figure sheela would support the festival if anything, maybe not the brawling.

i'm not gunna be around for all of this =( but I hope to see the start at least, depends how late it goes on for =)

From what I understand Sheela Peryroyl is mostly about cultivation. Not really high up there with the ghostwise civilized life. The most important and relevant deity to the ghostwise halflings (I think) is Urogalan the Black Hound. He Who Must Be.

Gunz is more clued up in that department.

Edit:
Actually, they're both high up there in ghostwise worship. Though Urogalan is more of the dominant of the two in terms of ghostwise followers.

Also, generally, all halflings (the three subraces) are very likely to respect all of Yondalla's Children understanding the purpose of each and understanding their worth. Though of course when it comes to choosing a patron, race does seem to affect the choice at least a touch.

None of Yondalla's Children directly oppose another. They all get on fairly well to some extent, and each are also somewhat an outsider in their own way.
Example: Brandobaris being a bit too much to handle for most others of the pantheon, Urogalan considers himself fairly separate, etc.

In other words, if Hazy is devout to Sheela Peryroyl, and a usual ghostwise halfling that would appreciate the pantheon in its entirety, there's little to suggest (purely from a religious standpoint) she'd have anything against a festival to Arvoreen, albeit very martial in content. And perhaps even embrace it as a celebration of a common/shared interest/love of a particular craft. Definitely high up there in Sheela's books, I'd say.

But the nuts and bolts of it, religion aside, it comes down to Hazy's personal tastes. Likes and dislikes.

I hope that's been helpful, if anything.

Sheela is a lot more than just agriculture and cultivation, actually. She embraces all of nature. Think of her as a combination of Silvanus and Chauntea. She's concerned with the wild and the tame pretty equally. And, although the nature aspect is arguably her biggest concern, she's also a goddess of love, romance, beauty, song and dance.

Yes, Sheela is very important to the Ghostwise, as is Urugalan. They're the most important to the Ghostwise -- even more than Yondalla herself. The Ghostwise live within nature and embrace nature arguably more so than the other two subraces, which explains why these two gods are the most important -- Sheela being goddess of nature as a whole and Urugalan being a god of death and earth.

I don't think Sheela would oppose the Arvoreen festival, no.

Yea, after doing some digging, it's not even majorly about cultivation, but finding the balance between cultivating and nature. But also love :D. She's also somewhat of a diplomat in the realm of the gods. A "Celestial Mediator". Even non-halflings pay respect to her before a negotiation or pact.

Yup yup! She mediates disagreements between Silvanus and Chauntea, Silvanus and Waukeen, etc. And yeah, even mortal diplomatic situations get a small prayer to her. She's well known for being a mediator with the gods even outside of Hin society and so the other races even know about it in a lot of cases. ::nods::

Oh and about Hin respecting all the gods, I guess that's true at the end of the day. But, Ghostwise do tend to frown on worship of Brandobaris, Stronghearts tend to feel the same way about Brandobaris and Lightfoots I'd think would shy away from Arvoreen worship. Stronghearts and Lightfoots both find Urogalan very weird. But at the end of the day, in general, there is respect for all the gods.

As for the conflicts between Hin subraces? Of course there are conflicts. The most epic of all being the Hin Ghost Wars.

i'm afraid the reason I won't be around for long is oocly =( but I have to agree there wouldn't be a deity clash issue with this festival. I have a weird few choices of deitys for a hin, the main one being sheela, but some elemental and magical homage going out to akadi and mystra aswell...from what I read while rolling the character I took it that family is pretty much more important than the gods to an extent as far as ghostwise go. actually all hin.

heh, the ghostwars are pretty relevant considering how long ago technically it happened, if its now 1379 DR ? (I have tried to figure this one out..) and the ghostwars happened in...well the FR wiki has gone all 4.0 on us but somewhere around 1370, which is before the [canon lore ends here] in amia =D

back to the topic at hand though, it says there that arvoreen is all seriously most of the time, I can see some sort of divine intervention in the way of smiting if dale starts to get overrun by evil folks. especially on the day.

on um a slightly less lore based note, is this based on um...pagan festivals? or like, ancient druidic stuff, irl...I ask cause its a festival of the equinox and the moon and jazz, though it usually marks harvest time more than a full blown religious thing, irl.

going to try to find more hin related lore, um, last note I should add, ghostwise (should ?) just call themselves hin, icly, even to the point they wouldn't know what a lightfoot is for a start. but thats not entirely relevant to the topic.

also I wish I could remember how to do fireworks, I don't think I got the right spells for it yet though.

RE: The Ghostwars. It happened Looong ago in -68 to -65 DR. Pre Dale Reckoning is like BC to us. so to our folks, the Ghostwars happened over 1400 years ago.

It was the aftermath of it that made lightfoot halflings so disgusted at the stronghearts' massacre of ghostwise hin, they left Luiren en mass, and there are still few lightfoot halflings in Luiren.

RE: What the festival is based on, like pretty much all festivals we celebrate today in the RL are based on key celestial/astrological/astronomical events. Pagan or not. Easter and Christmas are two classic examples. From what I've gathered, the moon plays a major part in a lot of the FR deity venerations. Every New Moon, there's Brandobaris' Tithe whereby all followers hide/store a stolen item in a safe place perhaps never to be seen again (like in a ditch off the road just passed). The idea, I suppose, could come from the main plot of moonlight, and darkness forever fighting. Represented by the moon waxing and waning similar to the never ending rivalry between the two sisters Selune and Shar.

RE: Ghostwise.
Yea, they're not really likely going to call themselves "Ghostwise". I'm not too sure where the term comes from (I'll do some digging in to that) but they just call themselves the hin just like the other halfling races. Aftrer all, aside from the deep cultural differences, they all appear the same, in terms of hair, skin, build etc. (Unless it's an Amia Setting strongheart, then they'd look like they're constipated  )

"The idol and alter of The Mother is not moving into the multi-deity temple. I thought that was clear.

Yes, the temple will hold a dedication to Yondalla, Moradin, Garl Glittergold and Titania. But not moving that same one that's already been moved a few times anyway.

There is some excellent lore in the "Shining South" or somesuch...I will look for it and post the link. Gives a good background for the Hin.

and a Stronghearts er...heart can break just as easily when taunted *sniff sniff* :D

As was mentioned...BloodNAshe's works are extremely useful and are a must read for Hin players.

I always wanted to incorporate this in a Harvest Ceremony...
