I'm building a Ftr18/CoT10/Rogue2 at the minute, also a dualwield Devcritter, Base Starting STR of 17. His epic roster is:

21 Epic Weapon Focus
24 Great STR
27 Great STR
30 Epic Will

CoT10 Armourskin
Ftr12 Epic Weapon Spec
Ftr14 Overwhelming Crit
Ftr16 Epic Prowess
Ftr18 Devcrit

His Will save was the only one that was under 20, and it still only finishes on 18 with Epic Will. On the plus side, the only things he'll really need Will for are subject to Spellcraft, and he's getting a +3 bonus from crossclassing that.

Since your unbuffed saves are over 20, I would go Epic Skill over the Epic save feats.

I made savesier drafts of Batsaikhan, but I wanted 14INT for IKD and the skills/RP and for him to dualwield. Smarter but more boring choice would have been onehandering, but as it stands I love how he can flip between being a solid frontliner and the flanking DPS-machine so well.

+1 AB is always great, but most builds tend to not be able to fit it in.

prowess is for people who variate weapons alot, like I guess, all my characters XD weapon focus is better and so is mythal crafting. I wouldn't personally ever take that feat unless I really had a spare.

No, Prowess is for anyone who wants to have +1m more AB so you can do the coveted "run Power Attack All Day Wth No Penalties".

Also, quick question: a build (not going for Dev) has power attack, cleave, will get KD, IKD, has blindfight, has great fort, strong soul, luck of heroes, has toughness, has wep focus, spec, imp crit. I have an open feta at level 12. Currently I took Called Shot because I don't really have anything else good for it. I didn't bother with Great Cleave because it's not a WM and won't get Dev. Is there any other good pre epic feat I could grab? Pushing it to epic isn't an option. IT's just a general non class related feat. Non 13 dex feat, but I do have 13 int. Called Shot isn't working out well due to the lower AB of having a 3/4ths class in the mix and generally being non WM so I'm looking for something better. Eonm't have the AB to run Improved Power Attack, either.

improved initiative
disarm
resist energy: sonic

I personally like resist energy: sonic, because so many other players run around with sonic enchantments on their weapons, but if it's more geared up against PvE, I suggest picking a resist energy that you know you won't fit into your gear and that most other monsters throws out at you. Too bad you can't get resist energy: divine.

I'd go for Lightning Reflex. Can never have enough Reflex! Especially if that 3/4 class is Rogue or Monk.

Hey monkeys and lore dudes, I'm planning on making a Gorm Gulthyn -esque Gold Dwarf. I have some builds in my head and I can't quite decide which to choose yet. Lore insight or more build ideas are welcome!

24STR-16CON-14CHA
Ranger 21/ Paladin 8/ Rogue 1
It's pretty solid but I'm having a problem picking my last 2 Favored Enemies. Giants & Undead are my first two because they populate Brog. Orcs and Human Barbs live in Brog too, but I don't think they're worth taking. I'm thinking Outsider as my 3rd Favored because of Abyss(?) or Abberation because it's a gold dwarf. As for the fourth one, I wanted Duergars. Are Duergars considered Dwarves? Can you be a ranger without a nature type Deity? Do ranger dwarves even exist? What are the other races that the Gold Dwarves hate?

Ranger 21/ Paladin 8/ PDK 1
Same as above but with less tumble AC, no UMD, no 1d6 sneak, and I lose cleave. I get the heroic shield to go along with the whole Gorm Gulthyn thing though which is pretty cool. Worth it?

Cleric mixed with a little bit of PDK or DWD or CoT or Bard/Rogue.
War + Protection Domain. I'm leaning into a 38 or 40 WIS cleric with epic spot on this one. It's a cleric so no matter what the concept, it'll be good enough. I've played plenty of clerics already though, so I'm looking for something extra spicy or new if I'm looking at another cleric. I'm fishing for more cleric ideas that'd fit in as a barakor, a vigilant bodyguard cleric of Gorm.

I'd rather go with the rogue. Giants, Undead, Humans and Outsiders would be my pick. After all, he is a pally.

Cleave is a very useless feats, once you get the proper number of attacks rolling, don't take it either way.

Paladin Build I was fooling with:

01: Paladin(1): Power Attack, Blind Fight
02: Paladin(2): {Smite Evil}
03: Paladin(3): Divine Shield
04: Paladin(4): CHA+1, (CHA=17)
05: Paladin(5)
06: Paladin(6): Divine Might
07: Paladin(7)
08: Paladin(8): CHA+1, (CHA=18)
09: Paladin(9): Cleave <-----
10: Paladin(10)
11: Paladin(11)
12: Paladin(12): CHA+1, Extra Turning, (CHA=19)
13: Paladin(13)
14: Paladin(14)
15: Paladin(15): Improved Critical
16: Paladin(16): CHA+1, (CHA=20)
17: Paladin(17)
18: Paladin(18): Weapon Focus: longsword
19: Paladin(19)
20: Paladin(20): STR+1, (STR=17)
21: Paladin(21): Great Strength I, (STR=18)
22: Paladin(22)
23: Paladin(23): Epic Weapon Focus: longsword
24: Fighter(1): STR+1, Epic Fortitude, Armor Skin, (STR=19)
25: Fighter(2): Epic Prowess
26: Fighter(3)
27: Fighter(4): Weapon Specialization: longsword, Epic Weapon Specialization: longsword
28: Rogue(1): STR+1, (STR=20)
29: Paladin(24)

What might you suggest?

Cleave is pretty good actually - PvE anywho. (+20% damage everytime you kill something... if you're rocking haste and hit every attack that round - more if you dont hit everything or have haste).

In lieu of that, knockdown or toughness would be good. Though I'd prefer knockdown myself.

I'd go Pally23/Rogue2/Fighter4 to net Evasion. Level 24 Pally doesn't grant you anything too special.

Cleave is very useful during the lower levels, but as up you go it becomes useless as it stops functioning after about 3 attacks per round. Extend spell is vital for Pallies, grab it instead of Cleave.

You'll have a high Fort save already. ESF Discipline would save more room in your items.

Yarp, once you're past BAB 11 or even less with dualwielding, then you need Great Cleave just to make Cleave work reliably. I'd say it's actually nice enough to compete with Skill Focus: Discipline, Iron Will or Lightning Reflexes for Tormak's (I guess Blackguard) build query. That's not to say any of them are actually good, but then you don't really expect anything nice from spare pre-epic feats.

Brooks, you don't have your own Knockdown there, and while you can wear items with it, I dislike being tied down to them when gearsetting so much that I'd take it.

Well, thats my build aswell, only instead of going Tuigan, I picked wood elf. It was easier to get the 15 DEX and I could start off with 19 STR.
The cost is only 12 INT, therefor no IKD and -60skillpoints and -1 feat.
Its a matter of preferences I guess.
With skyhigh STR hopefully I dont need EFS Discipline and ESF Spot wont do me that much (low WIS anyway, I cant see the ms/hide epic dexters anyway).
So I guess I'll stick to the plan and go the same route as Ruce..

I have a question about Create Greater Undead. Has this been modified on Amia? I checked under the spells tab on the side and I don't see it as being removed or modified. I'm a lvl 25 Wizard and I have yet to come across it. It should be a tier 8 spell but when I go to my teir 8 spells I see "Create Undead" which is a 6th tier spell.

Yeah I knew that according to the list I only get create undead, I was confused about where create greater undead came in. I saw it listed as grimoir or something that said it was a wizard lvl 8 spells but then I saw that the original is only for clerics.

On the topic of wizards, if its an acceptable question, would it be safe to say that a spell DC of 35+ is genuinely good enough for most things to make gameplay competitive on Amia? Thanks.

me again, I have too many questions -_- shifters...

before I make a complete mess of a post i'll post the intentions.

construct shape, dragon shape, at least level 7 druid spells, 9 preferable. (no epic spells) extend spell, awareness, blind fight, stats are 8 10 10 18 14 12, greater wisdom up to 5...(for 30 wis) and um, rp wise its a wild halfer, neutral good or just neutral I haven't decided yet...

my first build test bought me to a 13 druid 17 shifter for level 7 spells, but i'd like to optimise to a 17 druid /13 shifter, for level 9 spells, slightly less epic forms (no epic commando or basalisks, or any other shift in that category.)

the idea behind this is that premenition is worth the effort, and generally being a support buff in regular form, and a variety of things in other forms.

I would have gone druid/shifter/ green DD but its not possible =( any tips hints etc, good feats to take, would be awesome, I am struggling to optimise the build, i'd like to keep the casting up there but epic spell penetration is not possible, i need 8 feats in epic and i get a total of, 8 feats in epic...

When I asked my question, it was a generalised question for the majority of spells. Please forgive my ignorance, but I am completely unaware of a way to achieve 40 dc for the majority of a wizards spells for a level 30 build, one or two "finisher" spells is a possibility, for example a dc 40 wail of the banshee, but any other spell 35+ is the norm afaik. So to say 40 or bust is a pretty empty reply.

40 or bust.

for some reason I don't get enough feats with the druid shifter build for dragon shape, if someone knows a way to arrange the levels so I do and have enough for 5 epic wisdoms and dragon and construct, aswell as level 9 spells from druid, let me know.

I think its cause druids get less epic feats than shifters? I could I guess take all the druid levels before epic to counter the problem, but RP wise don't want to wait til level 18 for my first shifter level...anyone?

You will either be a competent shifter or druid. Not both.

5 druid 6 CoT 19 Shifter
or Give up on shifting
28 druid 1 rogue 1 ranger

The only reeal way to do is a mix of both is to do 16 druid/13 shifter/1 rogue and do nothing but fling spells as a rakshasa, or similar.

that could work, um, I did try cot, and harper scout before you think i'm just rushing into this one pigeon by the way your advice is always awesome.

I am going to try 17 druid/13 shifter one more time with later shifter levels, I managed it before with 13/17 so I don't see why it doesn't work backwards =( but failing that i'll try the 16/13/1 idea, might even take bard there. i'll see what works. *more build tests after next reset maybe*

would be nice if I can manage the level 9 spells cause fire giant and balor are underated for a shifter, rp and melee.

tumbles not a class skill, would have to spam in the '1' level class. also umd =D a little. not overly.

If you want to melee, druid is not the class. Druids cast, the pet is your melee.

If you want to melee yuorself, go Shifter.

Hey everyone!

I've been wanting to make a character that dual-weilds katanas. I'd like it to be good at PvE and PvP (because with the character i have in mind, it will probably get into some PvP situations) and i'd like it to be able to survive (PvE at least) without -needing- buffs.

Also, I don't want the character to have any diety classes (Paladin, Cleric, etc)

I barely know anything about building characters, so any help/advice/whatever will be greatly appreciated. :D

Cliches and horrible stereotypes aside, it's going to kill your AC, it's gonig to kill your AB, and the damage won't make up for it. You're better off 2 handing or dual wielding light weapons.

One of my pet peeves as well. Same with katana and shield. Anyone who has done any serious martial arts training knows how ridiculous these builds are, though supernatural strength and general fantasy-ism diverts most of these arguments to the realm of flavor and style rather than realism.

No worries, if that is hated so much, i'll just ditch that concept. It's a shame that NWN doesn't make katanas more like they are IRL (as far as i know, anyways) where they are a two-handed sword.

Katanas are two-handed swords, yeah, but there was a pretty famous swordsman who was known for wielding a katana with one hand and another sword with the other. If someone in real life was able to fight that way (and kill large numbers of people doing so), that negates any argument that it's too unrealistic to occur in fantasy.

Thanks.
So what if my character were to use a katana with the main hand, and use a short sword or something with the other? or do katanas just suck in this game no matter what?

As someone who has practiced and studied kenjutsu, you should know that a Katana - along with a Wakisashi, a Ninja-To, and relatively every other Japanese blade - are all traditionally wielded with two hands not due to necessity, but to the increased control that two-handed use permits a swordsman to manipulate a cutting weapon (as opposed to a "hacking" weapon, such as a traditional longsword, scimitar, and many others). Now, without going into much detail, saying that a person wielding a katana one-handed is absurd is thus as absurd as saying that a person wielding a short sword one-handed is unrealistic (being a near equivalent to a ninja-to).

tl;dr - A katana is actually shorter, lighter, and longer of handle than the typical European longsword (by as much as 7 inches and 2 pounds, to be clear). Thus, saying that it is a "two-handed weapon" is ridiculous - and saying that it cannot be dual-wielded or used with a shield is even more ridiculous. So don't do it. Kthxbai.

Axellion, you do whatever fits your character. That's always the best choice.
---------------------

So, I'm a-making me a bard. At max level he'll be looking at around 61 ac, 52 ab (not including curse-song and taunt), and a base (including non-modified attributes) saves that are: Fort 18, Will 18, Reflex 20. I have a feat I don't know about selecting in epic levels... Do I go with Epic Discipline (always useful), Epic Taunt (Cause I'm going to be using it continually as a Curse Song -> IKD -> Taunt -> Beatdown tactic), or Epic Fort (because my forts sux ololz)?

Okay, well, the character i had in mind is one who is really strong, and able to win alot of fights. If, in every fight i get into, I have to go hide and let the group handle it or run away, then that isn't really what fits my character. So, i was wondering if i would be strong using a katana+light weapon, or if i should find a new weapon altogether.
Anyways, thanks for the facts+advice :D

Any time!

Also, if I may make the reccomendation - a character that is "really strong and wins lots of fights" is more of an existence, not a character archetype. You either are a very skilled combatant and win lots of fights or don't; it's not really a characteristic you can typically build a character on. I was talking more about...

Is he from Kara-Tur? If not, how did he come across a katana / come to use or master a katana? Does he value the traditional samurai views of self-discipline and inner strength that fuel an outward prowess in combat? Or does he say "screw it, this thing's sharp and shiny" and hacks at his enemies all day long? Does he have a relationship with his weapon outside of "this is my choppin' knife"?

Not from Kara-Tur, but would have visited it, and picked up the katana there. And, i wasn't creating the character aroud "being strong and winning fights" but, that is something the character would have to be able to do.

Well, without going back and reading the previous pages of this thread, I'd recommend either a Fighter/Weapon Master/Rogue or something akin to it. My personal favorite smashing melee classes have been:

- Strength-based Paladin (definately the most powerful)
- Ranger / Fighter / Rogue (brutal damage, significant AB, good skillset, animal companion that is better than most party members)
- Fighter / Weapon Master / Rogue (High Damage, High AB, great crit range)

Well, The paladin wouldn't work for this character, but the ranger/fighter/rogue probably would! can you tell me more about it, please? :D

Go build what you can, then bring it back and we critique from there.

That's only true if your party members are shifters or shadowdancers. (No offense to the two shadowdancers and zero non-monk shifters I've ever partied with who could keep up with others their level in PvM.)

The animal companion is nice, but don't oversell it.

If he's talking about Ranger 25 / Fighter 4 / Rogue 1, that's a pretty fun build. (Rogue in epic for skilldump, bane of enemies, 4th fighter level in epic for epic weapon specialization, devcrit since you aren't using a 20/x3 weapon -- it more or less falls into place by itself.)

25 Ranger / 4 Fighter / 1 Rogue with the basic melee feat roster. Key elements are...

Pidgeon beat me to it.

And I don't know, Pidgeon, at level 25 a panther with a flame/ice berry and full on buffs is pretty intimidating. I think Zephyr's killed as many PCs as Mavek has.

Dont even need dev crit to be perfectly honest. But wouldnt hurt.

As for the companion.... More damage and AB then anyone but WMs and Pallys and the like.
Less AI of course. Less HP and AC.

If you know what you are doing its safe.

Rikku as a ranger 25/4/1 could take Khan through Abyss to Dragon by himself. Granted a lot of heal pots, but it requires a clever usage of the summon.

Oh yeah, I forgot the best thing about the ranger build (from the standpoint of Axellion5's character vision): ranger gives you free Improved Two-Weapon Fighting that (unlike Ranger TWF and Ambidexterity) doesn't go away when you put on heavy armor, so you can use gloves of the balanced hands for dual-wielding fun.
