Well doing much of anything without a word said is pretty much metagaming.

Could do it with RP too. I was demonstrating that it's easily doable. That's all.

Not trying to be an ass or anything to you Tormak, but I think your excuses against my proposed idea are silly.

I get that you don't want NPC guards to change. It's not a big suprise that you dislike my idea. I also know they never will be changed even though it would be more fun and free up time for DMs.

I'm erring on the side of protection for the work factions do, so that the other side must put in an equal amount of effort if they wish to destroy. My statement of OOC friends rolling characters together for specific purposes isn't unheard of and has been done more than a few times throughout Amia's history to affect specific areas, people, and factions. I mentioned it because it's a very relaistic possibility to have to consider, if you simply go "okay, kill NPCs and their base is kaput".

Killing the guards just means the base can be entered. The entire faction who owns the base isn't kaput. And the 'realistic' senerio you mentioned can be applied to anything done by players on Amia.

And if the base can be entered, it can be destroyed. What exactly do you expect? "You can go inside. Look, but don't touch". If they cannot do anything then your entire suggestion is just an open card to metagame, and if they can, it's an open exploit and makes the jobs of the DMs much, much harder while really adding nothing to the overall progression of the server. I don't see a need for every faction to have guards kicking around that you can slaughter when you feel like so you can tromp around them and kill PCS whenever you want.

Too many characters in factions just sit inside their impenetrable fortresses. That's not fun or realistic.

This metagaming stuff you keep talking about makes no sense to me. If NPC guards actually defend their keep, how is that metagaming? Another faction can't plant an atomic bomb inside the opposing factions' fortress after killing the guards (at least not without DM approval).

Guards are not invincible, but they are when a DM isn't on or is too busy to help out. I say cut the middleman out and make it FUN.

Please also understand that also having a summons walk through a town with the guards are very much against the type of summons is metagaming the guards. I am simply speaking of undead walking through Ne'sek visible. Please don't do that.

I've bolded the relevant bit. For the sake of example, we'll assume that your idea has gone in.

Group Evilpeeps is attacking faction Goodygood, and there's no DM around. Now, the guards are there and can be hassled, so evilpeeps effortlessly walk over the NPCs and gain entrance to the faction. Let's not discuss NPC strength or anything; let's work off th example that the NPCs were killed and Evilpeeps go inside the base. There is currently no DM online.

Now, they're inside the base, and there's no DM. What can they do? They can... um... PvP more with PCs, I guess. Or kill more NPCs. They can'tdo anything worthwhile or meaningful in the grand scale of things without the DM though. So all they've accomplished is flexing their powerbuildy finger by demonstrating that their ability to make a build is 'superior' to the combined roleplay efforts of the faction that's put in the hard work and RP to create that place in the first place. I'd be willing to but there's more than a few people feeling irritated in Faction Goodygood now too, since their NPCs got 'walked over' and their base broken into, with no DM and no real purpose other than to let Evilpeeps 'pwn sum faec'.

Since you already need a DM to go into a faction base and do 'meaningful relevant RP' (notice the quotes, this is a loose, broad reaching term), why should we leave the door open for people to kill NPCs off our watch and have their way with a base.... except that they can't have their way with a base without us being there, so why let them in in the first place if we're not there to oversee it?

You mention the "Impenetrable fortress". Under your idea, the fortresses are just as impenetrable, you know. All you've done is added irritation and made builds even more important than the server culture places importance on them now. You've elevated PvP to an even higher standard, because any group who can pull together 2 or so mages can run riot on any base, anytime they feel like it, and there's very little their victims could do to stop it, if they're even logged in at the time. Let's not even get into the PC story and PC notices that would start popping up. Faction Hugglepugs' Hideaway is torn asunder by ChaosR'Us, with screenies taken, and a PC Notice forum is posted to the extent of "We came, we saw, we spit on your (not logged in) bodies and left notes so you knew we ccame and wrecked havoc, muahahaa!"

How does a situation like that benefit the server?

Yes, please do not walk through Ne'sek with an undead summoned. Not only are the LAthanderites stationed there, but also the Kelemvorites... and we have a tendecy to kill undeath and the summoner on sight. If you roll up into my town with undead, expect a beat down.

Is there a way to script an auto-attack onto a guard?

I know this is kind of vague, so allow me to explain.

The other day me and some buddies decided to go take a walk to Kohlingen, but en route we were waylaid by RP. Now on Amia, RP is a fairly common occurrence, however this particular RP was just plain idiotic. How so? This dwarf was standing in Cordor East with his weapon out.

Right in front of an NPC guard.

So what I am asking is, is it possible to script it so that, for example, if someone has a weapon out in front of an NPC guard, this happens:

Cordorian Guard Rogers: Citizen, put away your weapon.

Guy: *does not respond, twirls his axe*

Cordorian Guard Rogers: Citizen, it is illegal to have weapons out in the city of Cordor, put it away.

Guy: *continues ignoring the guard*

Cordorian Guard Rogers: I will not ask again citizen, -put the weapon away-.

Guy: *still does not comply*

Cordorian Guard Rogers: Alright, you've been given three chances to comply, now I will have to take you in.

*Rogers attacks Guy, knocking him unconscious*

Something along those lines.

The RP itself, I wouldn't say is idiotic. The fact he had a weapon out in front of a guard would be another matter.

We have one of these btw ;)

As a PC guard, when folks do stuff on our watch.. ok, no sweat, that's why we're here. Minor infractions when we're not around does and will continue to always happen. There are new folks to the server that have no idea the amount of depth the RP is on Amia, so they'll run around with their entourage and weapons blazing until told to stop. Sadly, many will think the rules only apply with other folks are around.

The spirit of this thread are when blantant abuses arise. It has happened, and recently, that folks are murdering each other in the marketplace (because it's set to party PVP). Granted there are no guards, but Hil'rash would Not stand by while this happened; at least wanting to protect his business establishment.

I've also seen folks abuse other PCs and I quote "..the guards wouldn't care.." was given as a plausible reason to continue said acts.

In summary, Minor infractions will happen and if you see it, remind the offending PC, but don't throw a caniption. On the otherhand if you're thinking of committing a serious crime (theft, assault, destruction of property, etc) with no DM or no PC guards present, don't. Take it outside the city. From Cordor, there's a whole forest of 'noone cares' two zones north. If you're a victim, SS it and pm it to a DM, you'll be making the server a better place.

Besides, any assassin that needs to meta to get a hit isn't worth his salt. ;)

As for NPC guards and killing them, I agree with Tormak, all you're doing is setting up a situation for two factions to goto war and begin arena style deathmatch games with NPC speed bumps. Besides that, the guards present are not the full compliment of garrison. Cordor does not only have ~two dozen in the general guard. To keep from server lag, and someone correct me if this is wrong, I'm sure faction guards are mostly representative of the presence not the extent. So raiding a keep isn't even plausible RP-wise without a DM.

As for scripting the guards, this would be great, however, there would have to be a whole new AI developed for the guards for each rule and the assessment scripts would bog down the server as they programmatically 'frisked' each PC in the area.

Just my $.02

Speaking of which.... Why do necromancers and people banned from the Cathedral of the Martyr-Saint think they can just walk into the Cathedral Invised/Stealthed and think 'Oh, i'm being stealthy, they'd NEVER notice'

... And THEN proceed to pick the locks on all the doors, thinking the guards wouldn't notice, per se, the door to the ubervault of sacred artifacts, opening. Or that the doors to the cellblocks are magically opening. They'd sound the alarm, investigate it, whatever, but they aren't completely oblivious to IC situations.

Drives me nuts that we constantly get metagamed in the EO base, and send in screenies, and the people show up the next day, and do it all over again.

I really really really just want to ask something very simple of people. Please. Less of a headache for me, and probably some of the other Guard players. Don't claim that the Cordor Guard NPCs do nothing ICly. Don't claim that they're sleeping, or they're incompetent. If someone metagames them, they're metagamed, but it's very frustrating to me as a member of the faction to be told repeatedly that Cordor sucks because the Guards just sit on their asses and let things happen.

Further, if you're being chased and trying to escape as a criminal, please respect the fact that when you run north through the gates, you have City Guards opening it for you. It's a simple request to consider that if a PC guard is chasing you, yelling, "Halt! Hold the gates! Criminal!" that the Guards would probably not open the gates for you.

I'm really hoping this doesn't turn into something to be debated, because it just seems ridiculous to me. Thank you.

Replace Guard with Templar

Replace Cordor with Cathedral.

Apply to the EO.

And you will see.

Such beautiful RP.

Addendum.

Having to stop everything I'm doing to jump in a guard and kick you out is also a huge pain, which is why I'd rather just do a shout for you to leave the area. If you're in a banned area with no DM's overseeing you, you've just metagamed. Most DM's will go with it and ICly kick you out, which is pretty damn generous.

I am absolutely sick to death of this reaction being taken advantage of.

My time on the client is sparse and valuable lately, and I like to spend it helping as many players as I can with their overall experience.

Sending me a "I'm in Cordor and I'm about to do this so you'd better come quick" tell or a "My PC's in Cordor but I'm banned so i just thought I'd tell you" is selfish and extremely inconsiderate and I -will- yell at you, because again...you've just metagamed.

"DM, My PC is banned from Cordor and I'd like to sneak in, do you have time?" Is perfectly fine, and nine times out of ten I'd be happy to help/watch.

I don't get pissed often. This does piss me off. A lot.

I'd like to point out that this does apply in the Shrine of Eilistraee as well. If you are a banned character, know you're banned, that doesn't mean you can come waltzing in and ignore the golems who've been ICly instructed to pummel your butt if you do. I've seen this happen a couple of times now. The golems are the Shrine guards, they need to be respected as well. :\

Joining the 'It also applies' bandwagon, this also applies to the Monolith. There is one way in, and you pass two golem guards at the entry itself.

Question; for someone like, say, Anadrien, can she go to the /isle/ itself, or no? She's banned. I'm using mine so no one can bitch.

Outside, you mean? We are silly, and there are no NPC guards there to stop you. So, I'd say yes.

I was more interested in seeing if, like, Evananee is considered a "guard" type.

OnTopic:

The meaningful Rp of having to break into a faction/base without destroying it, is to rescue people from jails, characters that are being held IC, online IC, and said people know about it, IC. Instead of the alternative, which is- "Oh your in our jails and no DM is around, it's now utterly -impossible- to escape, and anyone who tries is metagamming."

It's jailbreak rp, and you(collectively) can place restrictions on it. We(the server) already established that pvp can not be engaged without RP, by the same standard nor should people be allowed to break into places without an RP/IC reason. No permanent damage can be done without a DM present. The faction's IC actions determine whether there is a reason to break in or not. IE: Kidnapping someone.

I would love for everything to be super scripted to be able to handle any situation properly that comes in, in a realistic manner. I would love to be able to do things when DMs are not available, and the NPCs can use scripted AI, so we can have more RP possibilities, so that metagaming is cut down and unable to even do in some places. But alas, such scripting would be a huge deal, and so it turns into players having to take responbility and do the right thing RP-wise. I have no experience with scripting but I'm pretty certain it would be a big pain to accomplish such a feat. We have to work within the limitations of the system, and RP responsibly. If you want a game where you can escape jail, or go attack guards and slaughter a town whenever you feel like it without much consequence, or whatever...play Oblivion.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but:

So your argument against is "It's too much work to make the server better and more enjoyable because of the work it would take, and I have no idea how much work it would take." ...really?

-you don't know about scripting yet declare it to be a 'huge deal'? ..on what grounds? ..in order to draw that conclusion? Yet your against it and say everyone has to live with it or play another game, without knowing the amount of work it would take?

The present argument I'm hearing is "The benefit gained by the server doesn't equal the cost."

That claim is void, until I hear a person who knows more about scripting post on the subject.

Explain please the variables that can not be accounted for by scripting so the community can discuss them and perhaps find a solution.

Due to No PvP, for the most part everything you could do that would constitute as metagaming the guards or the sort would be actions performed either through item (un)equipping (running around naked), and the chat channel.

The first is fixable, roughly, but otherwise ineffectively. The latter you can't do without grinding the server to a standstill, as such scripts would need to be checks performed on the OnPlayerChat event, which triggers every time a player anywhere makes a single comment, emote, or otherwise enters something in the chat bar. This will mean extreme server strain, especially since these scripts would be checking, repeatedly, for words trying to find individual phrases with numerous little backlogs and constantly updated checks.

The strain on the server of this size would be immense.

You can't fix many problems as a result, and ultimately it's hoped player responsibility does a good enough job.

As someone who has extensive experience with scripting PW's and other campaigns within NWN, the workload necessary to create the scripting for the suggested idea is indeed far too much work. It would be equivalent to programming a real life robot. If you have the time, dedication, and skill to put in such an effort, I welcome you to present your ideas to the design team.

Otherwise, I suggest not relying on NPC's to determine the flow of your RP and RP responsibly. Unfortunately this it not tabletop and we are not a group of 6 people with constant DM oversight. We are a group of 60-120 (at capacity) with maybe 1-3 DM's if we're lucky at a time who can barely monitor 10% of the server at a time.

The point of it being: use logic and reason. If you shouldn't be somewhere and you have to ask yourself or a DM if you should try to go near that place, the answer is probably no.

If walking around Cordor with a weapon out is considered metagaming... then there's no point for PC guards and other PCs to confront them - they're ignorable. That's why I think there isn't much fun RP stemming from the whole "weapons away" thing; it's fundamentally an automatic OOC issue of "metagaming". There's no way to reason/rp out the weapon as safely secured on one's calm shoulder, because it's already considered as metagaming.

Yes, I hate that law and wish it didn't exist in the gameworld. Especially in Cordor, where it's a starting point for new players and has at least 5 entrances to it. I think it's unwelcoming and petty. /rant.

The weapons 'law' was put into effect by one zealous player and never enforced by any DM ever and thus, no DM controlled guard, ever. Therefore in this one single solitary instance it was actually never metagaming.

Though your shameless complaining purely OOC about what was entirely an IC event is noted, and is also the completely wrong way to go about things on an RP server.

Uh.. what? This "law" is being quoted oocly to players by players in game. Look at the OOC attitude on how people see the violators: we (yes, even me) see it as someone being idiotic and considers it as metagaming.
TormakSaber wrote:

If this is the DM stance on it though, it would help a lot if it's communicated clearly to players. You can't expect characters to be privy to these events and the politics behind it. If I got this right, this would mean the adventurer-guards are enforcing their own law in Cordor and has no backing from NPC guards? So this also means walking around in Cordor with a weapon out is not metagaming?

No, it' not, but that doesn't mean it's a smart thing to do and that a guard can't ask you to put it away anywyas. It is a busy crowded city with lots of workers, women, and children. Why would you jog around with your longsword or giant flaming axe out?

Good to know, thanks. :D

As for why, it's anyone's guess. 8ft tall toon who is obsessed with his weapon. Maybe he doesn't want to strap a large axe on his back and would rather just calmly carry it on his shoulder. Maybe he is charging at someone!
