Specifically the lowbie ones, Lesser and Minor.... does anyone actually do anything with them aside from recharge the portal wand? As far as I can tell, by the time I have the money/skill to fool with them, the gear I can buy has better properties than those mythals can add anyway.
Granted, I haven't fooled with mythals too much but am I missing something?

They are also handy sources of low level buffs, most notably Prot/Evil, and for giving you a disposable summon as a lure for those times when you really want Maxi to shoot Ruin or KD bolts at somone who is profoundly not you, or to draw a spawn away from chokepoints when Invis rushing to the Abyssal shops.

The damage reduction -/5 is worth a lot when you're below level 5 and a hit seldom deliver more damage than that. And as Uce said, the summons are important if you're not a wiz/sorc/cleric/druid and need a tiny meatshield in the beginning of your career. Ghostly visage and protection from evil helps at higher levels.

I +1'd a few things I stupidly bought without +1 at the time cause I was short on cash, also spell embeding isn't bad, summon creature 1 is...utterly useless but still nice.
or do what I normally do and sell them at inflated prices following the trend of current (and past) auctions.
also scribe is cheaper than mythals, but I think its job system items only ? (so I can rename my mithril sword but not my normal one ?)

Thats correct only job system items can be renamed, redescribed etc but even so thats assuming you can get a scribe to work cheap for you unless of course you want to be a scribe yourself but doing that -just- so you can renamed an item and not for the RP reasons to be a scribe is kinda... lame? : /

if you go through the RP I went through to find someone else to make you a sword, wait 3 resets for enough metal, and then come to me asking for engraving, thats wonderful =) see you in three days. til then *uses scribe to rename me swords.* also I can make paper, and there is big market for paper.
also suppliments weapomsmith, which is why I want to lose gemcutter with glyph, I likes my actual elven/slyvan words, not to mention I want to put the dates made in the descriptions. *i requests ingame next time i use glyph, I don't normally dig gems anyway tbh.*
...no really it took me three days. and sure you can rename that trout you caught but no one is going to buys "fried fish" // +1d6 fire element damage through mythal XD actually they might just.//
I don't mean to shun RP with the first paragraph...i'm just saying its not as lame as you might think, if you don't have the skills its hard to find people that do, especially crafting because people think you want stuff mythaled instead of a "smithy" and I wish people would realise the difference =) also ascalon you are legend for making my swords I thanks u =) I've yet to find a carpenter for example, lumberjack sure but carpenter not so certain. patience is required.
if you are however a weaponsmith that wants engraving done by null I see why not, could be cash dollar in it for both parties

Kinda a random idea/suggestion...what if using a weak Mythal on a blank scroll resulting in a random spell being added to it?

I find that Damage Reduction is a good use for Lesser crystals at lower levels. There's also +1/+2 Dodge AC on boots to be had with a Minor/Lesser crystal, which is again handy at the lower levels if you find a good pair of boots which have no AC bonus. You can also put +2 Armour AC on a robe or on bracers.
You can also use the Lesser ones to add 1d4 elemental damage to a weapon, which is handy if you have snagged a weapon without that already on and can't find a better crystal or weapon.

i've also had PCs ask me if i had low level mythals for adding +1 stat onto a piece of equipment. low level mythals do have their uses. I probably use more greaters for portal fuel than otherwise (that is, now that i've gearsetted like, 4 identically mythaled fullplates all using greaters, i wont need them again unless i rebuild and need to redistribute stat points.

This. I use them at low levels to add stuff to my gear.

Once I figured out how to play with these things, I had a blast trying everything I could. Sucks to make your weapon too powerful to use though...and your armor... Oh well, chalk it up to experience, it's all fun.
