Alright quick question, circumstances of late have required that one of my characters disguise himself with regularity. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts apart from the tired old "put on a helmet or hood" gambit. I've also tried to track down something to RP as stage makeup but to no avail. Any ideas are welcome.

I was just about to say the same thing.. Lizzie ninja'd. I've done a mask/hood combo with different hair. Different clothing than the usual..and changing look often may help as well.

I've done the hair dye thing and have tried many different styles of dress, but that only goes so far when Guards are well informed of your description and likely to recognize you.

I feel like disguise is also about how you carry yourself and who you pretend to be at the time. Either way Good luck?

If it were me, I'd get a Guards Uniform. Craft some armour - Might need someone to do it for you, someone who can get close enough - To look like whoever. Then wing it. Sir yes sir, who wants to test my new Halberd, etc. Forget skuling past in hats and hoods, literally hide in plain sight, be part of the scenery.

Don't expect others to notice you have different hair/armour/tattoos. If you want them to notice you look different and that they should not go by the floaty name over your head, be certain to send people tells with this information. If they are anything like me, they will struggle to tell you what colour their own characters hair is, let alone yours.

thats why I'm afraid of even trying to disguise... people see the floaty name at all times, and they automatically metagame. Even trying specifically not to recognize you is a way of metagaming. Knowledge that they have will subconsciously effect their play in some way no matter how hard they try to ignore that obvious ooc information.

The gripe I've always had with disguised PCs is that, unlike in PnP, there's no defined way to counter the disguise. In PnP, you can roll a Spot or Sense Motive (I forget which) to see through my disguise, but in Amia, the ability to disguise yourself is (like many PnP skills and abilities) too mechanically undersupported to be useful IC. Like, say you roll a Spot check of 75 (which is a perfectly reasonable number for a high-level character to be able to roll)... would you then be justified in seeing right through my disguise? "Oh, hi Lizzie, why have you dyed your hair pink and gotten facial tattoos and changed your wardrobe and mannerisms and for the love of all that is holy, why are you faking that outrageous accent?" When is a PC justified in being able to see through another PC's disguise?

We can all identify Aser by the smell of wet dog Disguise kits that alters appearence would be nice, but to really go through with a disguise you need a name change. And that's not likely to happen.

"Oh, hi Lizzie, why have you dyed your hair pink and gotten facial tattoos and changed your wardrobe and mannerisms and for the love of all that is holy, why are you faking that outrageous accent?" When is a PC justified in being able to see through another PC's disguise? I've used Alter Self before and it's worked, but it gives you a +10 on disguise checks. Then again I don't think it's allowed here in Amia. I'll quote it for everyone to show what I'm talking about. Alter Self wrote: Alter Self Transmutation Level: Brd 2, Sor/Wiz 2 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Personal Target: You Duration: 10 min./level (D)
You assume the form of a creature of the same type as your normal form. The new form must be within one size category of your normal size. The maximum HD of an assumed form is equal to your caster level, to a maximum of 5 HD at 5th level. You can change into a member of your own kind or even into yourself.
You retain your own ability scores. Your class and level, hit points, alignment, base attack bonus, and base save bonuses all remain the same. You retain all supernatural and spell-like special attacks and qualities of your normal form, except for those requiring a body part that the new form does not have (such as a mouth for a breath weapon or eyes for a gaze attack).
You keep all extraordinary special attacks and qualities derived from class levels, but you lose any from your normal form that are not derived from class levels.
If the new form is capable of speech, you can communicate normally. You retain any spellcasting ability you had in your original form, but the new form must be able to speak intelligibly (that is, speak a language) to use verbal components and must have limbs capable of fine manipulation to use somatic or material components.
You acquire the physical qualities of the new form while retaining your own mind. Physical qualities include natural size, mundane movement capabilities (such as burrowing, climbing, walking, swimming, and flight with wings, to a maximum speed of 120 feet for flying or 60 feet for nonflying movement), natural armor bonus, natural weapons (such as claws, bite, and so on), racial skill bonuses, racial bonus feats, and any gross physical qualities (presence or absence of wings, number of extremities, and so forth). A body with extra limbs does not allow you to make more attacks (or more advantageous two-weapon attacks) than normal.
You do not gain any extraordinary special attacks or special qualities not noted above under physical qualities, such as darkvision, low-light vision, blindsense, blindsight, fast healing, regeneration, scent, and so forth.
You do not gain any supernatural special attacks, special qualities, or spell-like abilities of the new form. Your creature type and subtype (if any) remain the same regardless of your new form. You cannot take the form of any creature with a template, even if that template doesn’t change the creature type or subtype.
You can freely designate the new form’s minor physical qualities (such as hair color, hair texture, and skin color) within the normal ranges for a creature of that kind. The new form’s significant physical qualities (such as height, weight, and gender) are also under your control, but they must fall within the norms for the new form’s kind. You are effectively disguised as an average member of the new form’s race. If you use this spell to create a disguise, you get a +10 bonus on your Disguise check.
When the change occurs, your equipment, if any, either remains worn or held by the new form (if it is capable of wearing or holding the item), or melds into the new form and becomes nonfunctional. When you revert to your true form, any objects previously melded into the new form reappear in the same location on your body they previously occupied and are once again functional. Any new items you wore in the assumed form and can’t wear in your normal form fall off and land at your feet; any that you could wear in either form or carry in a body part common to both forms at the time of reversion are still held in the same way. Any part of the body or piece of equipment that is separated from the whole reverts to its true form.

i'm not giving away my secrets but "acting" like someone completely different helps, for example, since "he" went bad (one of my disguises) "Vin" -was- a mystran mage >_> which is mostly blue and obviously use a staff and rings to make it look like your a mage (UMD...) and the rest is your job =) just use your imagination and the crafting system. also only ever ICly change clothes, so, in one of the rooms in the nomad for example, never suddenly decide to swap in the middle of a battle, or pull out a staff when your a farmer for example... (next up, cleric XD no really.)

Pretty much Jadyn. xD Everyone in LV and everyone's mother even had alter self. Bards, Sorc's, and Wizards... They'd just have a few levels to get at least to the second spell level and then cast it. Though with more caster levels, the longer it lasts. Shifters have way longer durations though. It's weaker in that sense.

They do have way longer durations. Maybe infinity longer, give or take.

trying to fight a shifter as a mage is loads of fun, especially when you have polymorph potions and spells, they get the bonus of properly getting the creatures skills though from what i've seen, though I remember a basalisk stand off, where neither of us we're turning the other to stone XD and as soon as they use polymorph potions and end up as a chicken they are boned XD also shapechange is useful for intimidation, taelar knows what I mean XD quality RP that was. here's a tip for disguises, hide in plain sight, without the feat and you don't -need- magic to do it. (though UMD helps.)
