I have been reading the naming rules, and theres nothing about leaving it blank but I thought I should ask, can I refrain from using a surname due to identity reasons RPly with my new character? better yet can I use the first name slot for a nickname?
I am ironing out the specifics now so if you'd like to know more (DM's) I can PM you the details.
I don't intend on giving out the name ICly or OOCly whatsoever just yet > = ) except to DM's for approval.
also some of you already know what i'm planing, shh... =)
*does more planing and build-testing >_>*

I think I've had a simular fix as you are in. I asked about leaving the name field black and I was told not to do it. But that was a single DM I'm curious to see what the question here will get as answer.

You don't need a surname. Your first name can be your nickname. Not like anyone could tell if everyone calls you by your nickname. You cannot leave the first name slot empty.

You cant have no name, for technical reasons.
You can have a false name, though.

I know I should call it something for referance, i've no intention of leaving it fully empty.

You aren't forced to have his full name in the name field, you could use just the first or the last name. Or even the nickname or name he's commonly called. Except when it's very generic. For example (and these are just opinions on style, some people do it anyways):
Ablonsyus Shadow = Yes Ablonsyus = Yes Shadow = No
Jack "Jacksnout" Whittler = Yes Jack = No Jacksnout = Yes Whittler = Yes

The problem is I don't intend to stick ICly to his actual name, and any nickname is superficial. on a plus note the builds done, now I just need his particular goal on amia and I have a good idea =) and a generic nickname that can be forgotten about through RP interactions. I was thinking 'Null' , and I mean null as in "fill in the blanks" if thats kool, if not I suppose I could live with using the actual first name to avoid later confusions about why i'm not cap'n pete aleguzzler or something terrible. ed: I also need the wiki for the deity's pages >_< but its still frazzled

Null is actually a rather rememberable name, at least to me. Bob however might do it

Problem with any name. Even if you claim another in game is that it floots above your head always. And that makes it very hard not to meta game it. It might work a little bit better if several people ran around with the same "none name" and without a character bio. But then one could still check your login name...
And no I asked about being able to change my character name myself rather then by DM intervention and the anser was clearly a No can't do or won't happen.

Bit of overthink here, no? Just make up any old tosh that sounds namelike and put a note in your bio that the word floating overhead isn't actually your character's name at all.
Then be prepared to have people call you it anyway, since plenty aren't going to care enough to check your bio, or to remember that they don't know it when they meet you a week after hunting and think 'Ah yes, it's that Pete Aleguzzler bloke I ran the trogs with'.

um, thats exactly why I don't want any old nickname, especially since he's going to be changing appearence. I like the Bio idea though I will use it.
I intend on doing this today so if 'Null' is not ok tell me now. i'd rather not anger the powers that be and end up with a "generate name" button name or worse >_>
ninja!...indeed it is horrible RP. the answer to it is // no.
already thought of john doe, far too generic. double ninja'd

We don't like this... Once you set your name, it shouldn't change much. There are complications otherwise.

An example I have everyday:
Vaelmith's last name 'Starshower' is actually a Common translation for his proper Elven last name Rua'fi.
So.. there is ways to do what I think y'wanna do.

tis a nice idea but he's human. I did Él'xzi's name a bit like that, EL is star like it is in egyptian and xzi I can't remember lol. and the extended version is the "actual" elven speak.

This. NWN only has limited means of recognizing someone. A few dozen heads and a few dozen voices. We have to use the tags floating over people's head in lieu of the 80 or so points of reference we have on a human face and the vast multitude of nuances in people's voices. If you give someone a name that isn't what your tag says (your tag is "John" and you tell them your name is "Donald", for example), don't get upset if they call you by whatever your tag is. Politely remind them in a tell about what you told them your name was and move on.... it's one of the perils of using that kind of tactic with your character.

How lame. You created a pointless thread in order to incite intrigue for your 'clever' plan.
And it worked. Disappointed in all of you for biting.

I hate "hidden" identities, for all that they are IC relevant they are ooc a pain in the arse, I have met several people over the last few months who tell me their name is one thing yet have another floating over their head. All well and good as I don't meta game the floating name anyway, yet if/when I meet that character a few days or a week or more later I will not remember how that individual named himself and chances are I didnt make a note of it at the time.

It's actually not too bad. I've adapted to it quite well, or when I was playing. Often times, people keep the same colours for quite a long period, they also keep their own singular sense of individuality, which can be good for visual cues in knowing who it is.
Furthermore, once they talk to you, you can read their names in the sidebar. So if there was any confusion, it is removed at this point.

k I just spent about 2 hours finalizing the build, my god its going to pwn you by level 30, all of you XD.
as i've tried to get across without telling you all the plan, I don't intend on being recognised easily, so if you have an OOcly issue with that keep it OOCly =) from my perspective ICly I will just say "huh? think your mistaken pal" or "who the heck is springmorn? my names bravado the great bard!"
if you happen to RP long enough to notice the "trick" you may indeed find out the nickname being Null but not the actual real name of the character unless idk if I join a faction or something later with it =)
and fears aside I won't be changing "names" every five seconds, and you will (should) find it blatent that its "not the same person" you met before by clothing/fact he now has a staff instead of a greatsword/etc without telling you the full plan...you can probably guess it from that.
> = )
non magical "shifter" XD

Hmmm, that sounds like a good use for a multi-weapon dev critter. no matter which one you use you pwn with all of them, hehe.
Anyways, I just had an idea about this, would it be within rules to just name your character *A human man* and let them rely on IC knowledge to figure it out?

No. That's like the equivalent of putting, 'RP to find out' in a bio except that it's against the rules.
You must have a name, not even titles are acceptable in the name.

thus why I'm calling it 'Null' as I have not heard NO from the DM's on that one. I know titles are not ok in the tag. I can however RP "the great" or "prince" whatever to my hearts content providing the guard don't catch me >_>
