Okay, the other thread was locked as it was getting very hard to actually get to the issue that we're trying to solve (The Lore). The length was also going crazy. I'm going to ask that any power, mechanics, or arguments to the rest be kept out of this topic completely so we can work at the Lore only. The mechanics are not changing, and what works; works. So that means the following facets need to be taken into account - Irrespective of Hostile or Friendly, the spell Greater Sanctuary prevents direct targetting of spells or attacks. AoE's Only. Greater Sanctuary does not make you Ethereal. You are still physically present in your location, thus can be foiled by mundane methods such as locked doors, or walls of soldiers. The spell does at times fail/'Bug' (this is accepted as a balancing fault of the spell, thus mentioned here) The spell still permits you to interact with the world to an extent (such as using Healkits or giving equipment to peers or picking up loot) The spell cancels when you attack, cast a hostile spell, or otherwise. The spell cancels when you have a high-powered summon out. WWA, Hail of Arrows and similar are legitimate attacks. Caster is Invisible to Hostile, Visible to others. Caster cannot hostile the server to gain unbeatable stealth vs all but Bio TS (this is the realm of Rogues and SDs)Those are all the facets of the spell mechanically. The lore needs to fit these as much as possible. Here's what's been given so far Existing Lore Rules & Lore wrote: The default description of Greater Sanctuary clashes with how it actually works ingame, which often confuses the roleplay surrounding Greater Sanctuary users. So please ignore the description entirely.
An Amia the spell is considered, for RP purposes, to be a save-less version of the level 1 Cleric spell Sanctuary. You are not on (or partially on) the ethereal plane; what the spell does is penetrate any magical or inate supernatural barrier to mind-affects and makes all individuals incapable of choosing to hurt the caster directly. They can still be seen, smelt and heard, but direct hostile action is impossible.
Note that this does not allow you to escape from all roleplayed conflicts: for example city guards can still detain you by other means than physical assault. Locking the city gate, for example.
Furthermore, when in battle(in game mechanics terms, set to Hostile) the spell affects your senses too, making them incapable of detecting the caster unless they have the powerful magical senses of a dragon or Umber Hulk. Even if they have such eyes, they cannot choose to hurt the caster directly.
On an intellectual level, any semi-intelligent character with experience of mages will be able to deduce a GS'd caster is probably in the general area from in-character clues like the existence of summons, or from having seen them cast it in the first place, or from having a friend or summons with 'real' True Seeing, so using area-of-effect spells/feats in PvP is not considered cheating, provided the various purely out-of-character means of locating someone have not been used.
For example, if you have set a Weapon Master to Hostile during a roleplayed conflict and then cast Greater Sanctuary, you are legitimately vulnerable to Whirlwind Attack being spammed while you buff in 'safety.' The WM has 13 INT. He will know you are around somewhere, even if some part of his brain is ignoring the fact his eyes/ears/nose are telling him exactly where that is. BrainSplitter's & Yurell's Suggestion BrainSplitter wrote: Sanctuary becomes Minor Invisibility. (Think about it's use, and you'll find it is a Will Save Invisibility Spell)
Greater Sanctuary becomes Supreme Invisibility. Operates identically to Invisibility, but isn't pierced by the spell True Seeing due to being of a higher spell tier. This explains why overly-keen sensed creatures can percieve you (Bioware True Seeing), AoE's hit you (You're still there, just invisible), WWA hits you (again, still there), Hail of Arrows hits you (AA's use arcane powers with their Hail of Arrows. Mass Seeker), Seeker Arrow hits you (It always hits), and why you can be still physically held / restrained while in Sanctuary (you're still there). This was suggested by Yurell earlier (but I missed it), as the identical, but appended to say that those with Bioware TS can see the target - but not perfectly, preventing anything vaguely resembling direct swings and attacks. AoE's and Sweeps still work. This sadly doesn't explain Hail of Arrows, and doesn't explain why you can't hostile the server and run around with Supreme Invisibility. Dwagin's Suggestion Dwagin wrote: Through magical means a barrier is created which lines the wizard and all possessions currently in contact with his form. While within the confines of this barrier nearly all sensory information which would normally reach a hostile target is filtered from their current Timestream. Objects manipulated by a caster under this effect function normally. Coming in contact with such objects may give sensory information which is not filtered from within the barrier, such as the opening of a door, crunching of a twig, footprints. Such actions may reveal the possible current or previous location of the caster. Hostile action by the caster or creating an inter-planar portal or other sufficiently powerful conjuration disrupts the stability of the weave nearby; permanently modifying its function and rendering it as if it were improved invisibility.
In certain special cases creatures with extraordinary sensory perception may be able to keenly detect subtle emissions from barrier caused by movement and living processes of the caster within. Though such creatures may witness this; a secondary function of the barrier prevents direct actions which are focused on the caster's exact location from entering. It has been noted that a warrior's strike aimed elsewhere may cleave through this barrier and still damage one under the effect of this spell, as will all cone and area effect spells such as fireball, gaseous clouds, and thunderclap, cone of cold and such targeted nearby, the exact mystery to why this is so is still being studied in hopes to one day finding an answer. As above.Explains everything except the "Can't hostile entire server for Extreme GS". Discuss the Lore only. Any complaints about the mechanics of the spell, its bugs, or its power (or the lack thereof, depending on your PoV) will be moved away. The DMs actually want to fix this lore so it's sensible.

This thread'll open up the floodgates something terrible I reckon. Anyways,
Supreme invisibility idea. Its the simplest explanation and works.

What Galverson said. I dislike the idea of it being stepping into another plane or something. To much power and seemingly very silly when you consider it.

Simplicity in my not-so-humble opinion is necessary to achieve the objective, hence the Superior invisibility works as it addresses all the mechanical functions of the spell without giving a complex backstory of why it is so.

You want it - give an IC Justification for not hostiling the entire server to grant Super Stealth of Awesome.

"Although an extremely cunning idea to become invisible from all of one's enemies, the deities despise such cats who utilise such tactics and send their chicken squads of destruction to smite their arses!"
...On a more serious note, "maintaining such a level of protection involves great strain on the caster's concentration. To affect the cognitive senses of more then a few individuals at once for long periods of time becomes dangerous to the caster's wellbeing." *insert DM smite for rule breaking*
I think whoever thought of that super stealth idea was a genius though in all honesty.

With the HAK, we can probably change the spell name, too.
Supreme Invisibility
A further improvement of the spell Invisibility, Supreme Invisibility makes the caster invisible to most modes of detection, including common Divination spells such as See Invisibility and True Seeing. For the duration of the spell, the caster is capable of concentrating upon a number of individuals and designating them as targets for Invisibility - hiding the caster from these individuals, while allowing friendlies and allies to still see and coordinate with him or her.
The intensity of this invisibility even foils the attempts of many creatures keenly capable of discerning the location of hidden creatures such as dragon sight and the tremorsense abilities of umberhulks. While the effect is not powerful enough to remain completely hidden - it retains enough intensity to prevent direct attacks from working, forcing many to resort to sweep or area attacks in hopes of connecting with the hidden caster.
For its power, however, the spell acquires some amount of instability - immediately faltering if the caster attempts to summon and directly concentrate on the control of powerful creatures, or by initiating in hostile actions such as Spellcasting or Attacks. Likewise, the strain involved in designating targets to be hidden from prevents safe application of its use in stealth or reconaissance - restricting its use to largely combat support and exfiltration. Attempting to use the spell for long-term stealth or against large amounts of opponents can result in death with some cases, and a coma in many others.

What effect/activity are you countering/explaining using the word 'reconnaissance'? It's great for recon because you can run through high-level areas without being spotted - mostly. And by 'exfiltration' do you mean 'running away'?

Hostiling the entire server to sneak about unhindered is what it's there to counter. And, yes, exfiltration = escaping. Using it to hunt should be OK still.

Needs tweaked to account for the way you really can use it for recon as long as they're spawns. Obvious option is that you need to see the person/thing before turning on Supreme Invisibility against them, so the server player list trick can't work, and we just politely pretend that you are just sooooo fast setting each critter to Hostile that they don't even twitch at you.
It's compatible with Galenson's limited multitasking concept; you don't normally see more than a dozen critters at once on a GS shopping trip.

It's considered an exploit, and is a large part of the reason for the funkiness of the old lore (forcing the individual to be hostile to you, as opposed to you hostile to them, for you to vanish)

What if the caster must know the person is nearby for them to be "Invisible" to them. They don't have to see them, but must know that something is there. That would also explain why a SD in HiPS doesn't show up on the player list as being in your area. That prevents them from being able to hostile the whole server because they wouldn't be able to know the whole server is anywhere near them.

I've always thought of GS differently than both the description and lore indicate beacause of how is seems to work mechanically.
There is a discrepancy in that while the lore dictates that direct hostile action cannot be taken, the user of GS can still be injured by indirect action. This implies that GS only affects the senses of those nearby, not their intent. If someone wants to kill your PC, GS will not change that since it's not an enchantment spell. The result is that even though one cannot be detected normally, it's reasonable that someone faced with a potential enemy in GS can still try and fight them, just not directly. It's basically the magic version of HiPS, and is countered in much the same way. You don't know where he is, but you suspect something is out there and can take action accordingly.

It's almost starting to sound like hostiling one or two people to use it as uberspystealth is okay now.
I was always under the impression it was a big nono outside of combat.
And if I'm not mistaken, the target's hostility towards you is what determines their being able to see you and not the other way around. Meaning if someone hostiles me, fires off GS, and I unhostile them on my end, they become visible.

A good point, and one that makes GS harder to deal with in relation to PvP and general use. GS works fine when both you and your opponent are hostile to eachother, but how GS works with non-hostile players is resolved via RP. This would seem to indicate that GS does not have an absolute effect and because it's seen differently by many players, it's simply more confusing as to what it actually does and how it should be used.
IMO, GS should be an absolute effect. In that, I mean that when GS is cast, you are really designating that everyone is affected and it cannot be variable as to who can detect you directly. Just like invisibility, you're either invisible or you're not. Kind of sorta invisible is called concealment and does not affect detection. This in my mind would solve much of the disputes of interaction with PC's who roam the server in perpetual GS and only declare that you in particular are concidered hostile after the fact, and continue to interact normally until that point.

As to using GS as an "uberspystealth" device. RP wise, if someone hostiles me, with the intent to spy using GS, without DM involvement and without any agreement from me as to the interaction involved. I will assume that they have made some error or slipped up in some way to tip me off, allowing me to take appropriate measures. As well, if GS is a known quantity, it's reasonable that people who can, will take pecautions if they suspect that someone is hiding nearby.

Didn't prevent him from tossing one of his friends the gun and ordering him to shoot. Its like that I suppose. Now the question, how do the Reality Potions come into all this?

*sigh* I guess no one remembers soul reaver then, the etereal plane on that you die and your still there but its warped. I assumed at first GS was pretty much that, before the other thread... and tbh i'm very very confused now, dm's are saying no supreme invis but Quote: sanctuary (1st one) The caster's or the person's, touched by the caster, presence is completely ignored by nearby creatures for the duration of the spell. so, its improved sanctuary but your neither invis nor impervious... either way I'm done thinking about it, good luck with that.

Supreme Invisibility is a lame name. Not gonna lie. Greater Invisibility; or... change it to something Lore-centric, or have it modeled after one of the NPC mages past or present in Amian lore.

Considering that it makes no mention of covering up the other senses other than sight, it could be concluded that your character might hear the footsteps of the GS'd individual or perhaps smell them. This would mean that your character knows that there's something going on, but can't really be sure. This would account for the AoE spells and feats being used. However, it could also be argued that the use of the nice little "So-and-so now dislikes you!" message in your log is metagaming and therefore shouldn't be used as reason to conclude that someone in GS is around you.

Make like it happens with most PnP spells: it works only against those who are within your sight.
Explains why you cannot hostile the whole server and, I believe, it is perfectly plausible.
It would also be good if it could be used only ~during~ combat, not after or before it.
This might also cover spying - if the Lore means to prevent GS being used for spying: those wanting to spy will have to make use of other means (Improved Invisibility, HiPS, H/MS or hiring a SD and/or Rogue) and if they were not smart enough to make use of other means... we all know that IC actions will have IC consequences.
As for suggesting a name...
...Thoramind's Escape? (Anyone remembers the crazy mage at the old Tower of Mystra?)

I'm really not too keen on naming it after a mage. It's a spell that both the divine and arcane have access to, so it makes sense that it should have a more neutral name.

My mind goes to the HitchKiker's guide to the galaxy - The "Somebody elses problem" field. In the swedish Section, it's called "NAP" (Någon annans problem).
Basically, it works under the subconcious part of your brain which could be plausable for this GS thingy.

What I find utterly silly and perhaps even stupid - is that the Greater Sanctuary 'knows' who's hostile or not and that others can see the user regardless. That's just so dumb - hostile standing near the user of Greater Sanctuary, while the user is talking idly with other people that're standing there. It's like escaping any RP. The hostiled character can't hear a damn thing they say while others are having a relaxing conversation. It's like sticking up your hand and saying: Talk to nothing, because no one is listening. Greater Sanctuary was really ment for PvE, to be honest.
Just my input.

It wasn't really "meant" for anything. Idon't think Bioware was thinking very hard when they introduced the spell.

That's hardly fair, bioware could hardly have predicted the PWs that would spring from their game. They are to this day rather unique in any game out there. Bioware balanced for PVE not pvp and in PVE in the single player campaign it's nice but not ridiculous.

When they made NWN the way they did, with the Toolset they did they were making it with the presumption people would be making modules or quite probably , worlds Azarius so IMHO though that's a point I'd apply more to NWN 2 with what they have, it doesn't wash for the original NWN

D&D is pve not pvp balanced and NWN is no different.

Given that "Persistent World" was a multiplayer category since the release of NWN I think it's a fair bet to say bioware did intend for gameworlds.
