Hi there... w00t first post I want clarification as to the servers stance on role playing children. I recently bumped into one and find it a little troubling. From an RP side it is interesting, however I do believe that a child, no matter what his stats say, is a child and therefore has no chance of taking anyone of these creatures on. Also I think from an RP side that no one would really want to take the child out into the wilderness to face these monsters and beasts. From a personal point of view I find it hard to RP with someone playing a child mainly because this is an open world where anyone may visit. I guess if I put it bluntly you don't know if the character is being played by a minor or not. Either way this is walking a fine line that, quite frankly, I do not want walk. Thanks for reading, Lion.

They are allowed, but it would be no understatement to say that the majority is not all too fond of them. My take on it is usually that my chars do not believe they are children (unless they are the level 3 PC's who seldom if ever leave Cordor and never do combat), and either view them as halfling tricksters or children possessed by demons or evil spirits who must be purged.

This comes up on the forums quite often. Child characters are allowed but strongly discouraged.
My take: BURN MAIM KILL!

I rather think that child characters are fine. But child characters that go out hunting and duel like characters from legends or like to start fights at every opportunity, are the ones not well thought of.

Child characters should probably be banned, or obvious reasons. I would ban them, whether they can be interesting characters or not. Just ban them. DO IT.

Minors are able to see all kinds of horrible and disgusting s**t on the internet. What's the worst that can happen on Amia? He sees some graphical roleplay, be it torture or of a sexual nature (both of which are ALREADY restricted), or he sees some bad language. Big deal. If you think that's bad, you've missed the rest of the internet happening. Amia is tame.
The one gripe I have with child characters is not whether there is a five year old on the other end who is oh so susceptible to internet predators, it is that the person is actually decent at portraying a child character. Few are.

There are heaps of reasons children should not be played. Lets remember that because some MONSTERS in Silent Hill 1 looked too much like children, the game was refused classification in Australia. This is before we even get into a whole range of other topics from drug use to sex. Having child characters is just a disaster waiting to happen, honestly. Why risk so much for so little reward?
If it were my server, I would just say something like, "Alright, come August 30 child characters are banned". Done.

It doesn't bother me, really. Amia is a big server, if you don't like someones roleplay don't roleplay with them.

Here is a list of scenarios that will cause a lot of problems if people get caught up in them:
1. Hin character hits on/pinches butt of child character thinking its a hin.
2. Child character wanders into naked dance situation at Shrine.
3. Child character buys stuff from criminals, like drug stuff.
4. Child character gets tortured.
5. Child character wanders to shrine of screams.
6. Child character has a bath at bathhouse.
7. Child character seems like adult character, with adult phenotype, but age wise is a child and thus someone gets tricked.
Do you want me to keep going with this list? really? Some of this has already happened (not to me). JUST BAN THEM.

Your list, though, is a list of things that could happen to poorly-rp'ed children (my opinion, people, don't hurt me! I don't mean offense!). I have a child character, as some might know, but she's a level two character who's not going to be getting any higher. Also, she stays either in Winya or in the Mystran Monolith, depending on which server I log on to. She doesn't wander around or go anywhere else, not even with an escort. Amia is way too dangerous for kids, and even she knows that. The only traveling she does is via the portals, courtesy of her instructors at the Monolith, whom she showed that she is able to be trusted with a simple portal wand. I mean...if a 6 Intelligence half-orc can use the thing, a twelve year-old wizard-in-training can, right?
It's not child characters that are the problem, but how people take their liberties with child characters and turn them into something they're not. But again, that's just my personal opinion.

The point is that all of those situations are fine for adult characters, but instantly become problematic when a child character is involved. Some of them could happen anywhere, and instantly open a real can of worms. Whatever, though, allow children then. I see it as the DMs way of saying, "we are underworked, and need more issues".
I also think it is child characters that are the problem. I hate them, and I want it publicly known that I do as well lol.

Not house. Guess what! You can adventure and fight FEL ORCS with your MAGIC SWORD while people play house! It's compromise. Look at it. Stare at it. Taste it.

I replied but my post went away... I'll try again *smacks the computer*
child characters overall should not be banned, but using a halfling as a child without a request should be. You are exactly what you are mechanically and on the character sheet unless you specifically apply to have such a character.
Example: I have a smoke genasi character. Mechanically, this character is a tiefling. I applied for this character and it was accepted, because the DM team trusted my RP to do it well and its a request without any trouble on their part.
Children characters should be held to the same standard. They make a halfling and don't request anything? They are a halfling. That should be the end of the story.

I disagree, the only reason I am now watching this thread is in the vague hope disco or whatever will just say "Yes, wyjyn, we are implementing your 30 August ban date on child characters. Well done, sir, well done."
Screw you pro-lifers!

Just Ban them, yes.
Freedom under responsibility. That's what we are aiming for, but the MAJORITY cannot be trusted regarding Child Pc's. It will happen, Oh yes. Somebody will do it, and a ban will be made. Lets ban them 'BEFORE' it happens.

I agree with pretty much everything Wyjyn has said especially the list.
Also what bugs me is the in game side of things. I have just had a run in with the same child that forced me to start this thread. The said child identified himself as an 11year old toughened by the streets. When I proceeded to get angry with the child and the hin that had brought him to the blood moon orc caves, not a place for children no matter how tough the street was, the child decided to throw the rulebook at me and said fight me then. My character is a pretty decent guy and would never fight a child and if he decided to, no matter what power this child had, due to the mechanics of the game, he would not stand a hope in hells chance against a fit and healthy man.
Tbh rping children on an internet based game is a recipe for disaster, if the DM's do allow it then it should be upon request and there stats should be immediately dropped by at least 2/3. Also the gaurds should stop them going anywhere dangerous and they should not be given equipment or a portal wand. This may seem harsh but would you give your child a sword unless it was in a sword fighting lesson or some other very controlled situation. I know Neverwinter Nights is a whole different environment to what we live in but children are still children and from most of the books I have read the parents/state does try to look after them.
Sorry got a little long winded there but it was just annoying to be put in that situation by someone playing the rulebook not the character.
Lion.

Why should someone who disappointed you with their RP ruin it for the rest of us? What warrants a ban here? That something *could* happen? Let's ban Sharessans too, because something *could* happen there as well. And while we're at it, Loviatans. I can honestly say that a lot of people tick me off regularly with their RP. Let's ban all of those.
...just don't RP with that person again, don't tell other people what they shouldn't do.

...just don't RP with that person again, don't tell other people what they shouldn't do. I think part of what the OP is getting at here is that there are alot of players playing lets say unusual characters but who are neglecting to to include the unusual IC aspects of those characters. And when you ask them why or post a message here the response is usually "because my stats/game mechanics allow me to" Ive been on Amia for a few months now and have run into a few people who RP their level or who play wierd and wonderful characters without the wierd and wonderful IC outlook of the character. Example. Child trying to fight a full grow man in full plate & shield and longsword. A lone elf/drow facing off against a Hobgoblin, a goblin and an Ogrillion toting a flaming 2hd axe and actually trying to grab the Ogrillion by the throat and drag it down to eye level. (incidently this act resulted in one times eliminated elf/drow) My point being is this is an RP server, and sometimes in real life you have to swallow your pride or put your tail between your legs and back down or admit your out of your depth. So players it seems are unable to get around the fact that by "loosing" the encounter, and by loosing I mean in any sense, but in doing so they might "win" in regards to RP. I think its pretty sad that there are players here who can't or won't grasp RP concepts and rather than say nothing or ask pertinent questions they spam the stupid sarcasm. Scoring a point isn't making a point.

I entirely agree, but you can't make people do this. They either do it or they don't, enforcing people to bite the bullet and lose once in a while is not how it works. So it's a pointless exercise bringing it up.

Scoring a point isn't making a point. This still does not change the fact that a child alone would lose a sparring match/fight with an adult simply because an adult ~is stronger~ than a child. Especially if the adult is wearing heavy plate and using shield. The problem here is that adults are as strong as they are because they spent.. say.. 30 years of their life augmenting that physical strength in some way. A child would never be able to be as strong because a child does not have 30 years of life used in augmenting their physical strength. What happens here is game mechanics allowing someone to get their strength score up to some 40 in a few days. See where I am going or do I need to say more?

And the only pointless question is the one that goes unasked, this is a polite discussion no talk of forcing anyone to do anything. But there are plenty of rules on this server alot of them to do with RP aspects I don't see that discussion a genuine RP issue that may not yet be covered by some server rules is pointless. Its a sad fact that common sense often requires some frame of reference i.e. a ruling. I agree that a child character should come under the requests category and that there should be some serious stat reduction and prehaps class and feat restrictions. You then have the issue of the character growing up within the game world and the rebuild that should be required at some point as the child grows up.

i dont mind child chars..i really dont..but i do mind child chars with the powers of a growup...class wise it makes no sense in any direction.
and my paladin is forced to deal with such, i have to stop children who wield hellballs then claim its just a "trick", who can cast mummy dust "but not know what undeath is"...i dont like the idea of a child with powers of a archmage, who can use spells that does takes years of study (yes even for a sorcerer, epic spells are learned, hence the requirements of the feats), i dont like the idea of a child who can dev crit, i dotn like the idea of a child with any sort of powers?..
know why?
because icly i am forced to deal with them, by server rules..and i do NOT like fighting children, i do not like killing children.
i suggest you either force all children above level 2 to be "grown up", or allow a loopwhole for us who does not want to deal with the child chars..such as "in the case of child chars with powers of any kind, one is allowed to ignroe thier rp"...

My contribution to this thread: Akrit Jaswal -- Child Prodigy, Child Surgeon: High INT score, High rank in Heal skill Cup Stacking World Record: High DEX score Little Hercules: High STR score Quick, obvious Google searches did not reveal candidates for children with high CHA, WIS, or CON scores. I'm not convinced they don't exist. My point is that children with abilities more advanced than most adults do exist... but they are not common. The problem with powerful children on Amia is that, if explicitly allowed, they would be anything but common.

I'm not anti-child character, but I am pro-restrictions for child characters. But, this thread is pointless since this thread has been made millions of times and only about a month or two ago the last time. While the opposition toward epic children has been voiced numerous time by a large majority of players, the DM team has the final say. They're called DM's for a reason, after all. They make the rules. And that say has been to this day: there are no restrictions to child PC's, period.
