The table below shows the amount of XP needed to advance a level.
When you want a certain amount of XP taken, please calculate it out first before asking a DM. Thanks!

3      3,000
4      6,000
5      10,000

8      28,000
9      36,000
10     45,000
11     55,000
12     66,000
13     78,000
14     91,000
15     105,000
16     120,000
17     136,000
18     153,000
19     171,000
20     190,000

XP needed for level = 500 * level * (level - 1)

Yep, just thought I'd put it in a handy table for those people who really don't like math.

Might want to mention that people with ECL, have to look at their effective level for the XP needed, not the one that their sheet tells them they have.

Can't a DM just give X levels? I'm struggling to see how this is useful. Of course, I'm not a DM, but that's my point.

It's likely for the whole "DM can you take some XP from me please" thing.

You're level thirty and have 435,641 XP you can now easily see that you need 642 taken to go down to 29, for instance. Thus making it easier on everyone else.

Or just to see how little XP you really have, once you've spent alot of time getting your goofy behind up to level 15. Only to realize that the XP for 15 is only around one fourth of what you need to get the full way.

I reckon the point is to be as equal to everyone as possible. Some people don't see any DMs too often.

Huh. I thought it'd be way simpler going:
Take level, give level, take 1xp. Saves arsing around with charts and tables.

That's what I always did, yes. But, well, it's much nicer if the player can just tell you the number. Way less clicking!

Nope. Only the gaining of XP through monsters & job system is affected by multiclassing.

Thats exactly the problem facing the dm, it is time consuming for dms to check your xp, calculate how much xp is needed to get you below that amount. So in short please calculate the exact amount of xp that needs to be taken to make the process as smooth as possible.

I have to agree with the moshing one on this. If you're going to go down a level to retake it, retake the whole level. I mean, people pay DCs to get levels redone!

Though, in terms of the time consuming business, I don't think it's entirely worth telling all the players to look up this table. I'm sure as reference you can have it in your DM forum, and all that. A sort of virtual DM screen, if you will. All the player needs to report is how much xp they have and what levels are important. That's what they have access to easily.
Yea, knowing the xp needed to go down to whatever point is useful to make things go smoother, but not everyone is all into the figures/facts/inner workings of their characters. And nor should the -have- to be.

There, that's me looking at both sides :P Slapped wrists all round.

I must say that a player who has the exact amount gets quicker service than someone who doesn't know what he's doing. In my case that's because I can't read word to word every tell I get, so numbers catch my attention well better than a wall of text.

Just think about it.

"Can you take 56373 exp off me please?"

"Can you take some exp off me please, I just don't know how much, but maybe you could first drop a level then give me some exp back and then some off again..."

That doesn't mean I would automatically ignore people who don't calculate their exp. But if I'm busy and doing a lot of things at the same time, chances are that I completely miss your request. :|

Besides, he should do what I do. I always ask for the exact XP that I need to take. I could take a level and give xp, that's true, but I don't. Why? Because I care for the state of your education!
Failure to produce the right amount confronts you with the fact that you should have paid more attention to basic calculation. Success still trains your brain, something it can use after wasting so many neurons on an online fantasy game.

Do not go the easy way: It's good for you!

Even degree level Mathematics students on occasion have a block at doing simple arithmetic.
Education has nothing to do with it.

Is there a reader's digest e-version of the Player's Handbook on the forums for those of you who don't play D&D and have one of their own?
I ask because another server I play on has one that your character has to have in its' inventory, only takes up one square too, and is weightless :)
It helps greatly for reference and leveling up with class requirements, etc.

There is, actually. Though it's not on our forums. www.d20srd.org is an online version of the plyer's handbook, the monster manual, the 3.0 epic level handbook (there was no 3.5 translation), and the 3.5 dungeon master's guide.

Though, after this he'd be within his rights to dock players a 1000xp a level for wasting his time.

I don't think that is true, otherwise to hit level 3 a drow would need 10k xp, which is definitely not right.

for ECL +1, you take 1,000 from each number.
ECL +2, it's take 3,000

Then take the left-hand column as ECL, not Level.

Eg: A drow to get to level 3 is 3,000 (from the table) -3000 (from the ECL+2) = 0. Because a drow starts at ECL 3.

For a tiefling (ECL + 1) to get to ECL 10 it's 45,000 - 1,000

Oh yea, I was thinking of P&P. Doiiii.

Silly me. Yea, on Amia, it's the same XP. Only the accumulation of it is slower. Like multiclassing.

Shame on all of you for tearing Peeves apart for his thoughtfulness.

When I am in the Client and a player asks me to be deleveled, I ask for a specific XP amount that they want me to take away. If they give it to me, that is what I take away. I take it away, and then I move on to one of the other many things I have to do. If they were wrong in their calculations, I may be too occupied with what I picked up to fix it and they'll just have to deal.

If a player complains or seems reluctant to do the calculations themselves, I'll simply take the whole level, because that is even easier than keying in a few numbers they give me. Right click, left click, left click, done, essentially. Of course I will hear, "Aw, you took the whole level away!" afterwards, to which I say, "I asked you to do the math yourself for a reason."

Why does it happen this way? Three options:

1) I am too busy.
2) I am too lazy.
3) I am too good for that.

I'll let you decide which.

I am wondering about this statement and the ones like it upwards in the thread. It seems to have some self-fulfilling prophecy value. Some comments rub the wrong way, and person X says it's nasty to person Y, and then other people repeat that and in the end you get the idea something bad is happening. Something which in this forum often leads to really bad things happening sooner or later, due to short fuses and sloppy reading.

Anyway, I don't see any tearing up here. The content of the posts is about this: 75% is about technical bits, 5% not seeing the point of doing the calculation, and 20% complaining that those 5% of the posts are so bad to Vince.

Besides, the thoughtfulness bit is the list, but there is also the request to calculate your XP yourself. You can go left or right, but that isn't a service. I completely agree that players should do it, but still, it's not an act of 'selfless kindness'. I don't see the problem with AlphaWaves doubting the usefulness of something we demand. I also doubt he's getting a rebuild if he doesn't conform, but that's another story.

Mind that I don't see anyone at all being a miser about posting the XP table, which seems the core of the complaint with which this post starts. It's actually a very useful table, I have it next to my monitor as well.

All in all it seems the proverbial storm in the teacup to me, but I guess it's good to point out the mechanism behind it, especially in a thread that's as innocent as this one. People may have comments about almost anything you can imagine, they may disagree with you, but in general they aren't out to get you.

Brackets, in mathematics, show order of operation. In order, you generally do:
1. Brackets;
2. Powers;
3&4. Multiplication / Division (this is commutative, so doesn't matter what order you do these in).
5&6. Addition / Subtraction (this is commutative, so doesn't matter what order you do these in).

For example, if I had said 500 * level * level - 1, you would do it in the order (example for lvl 2):

500 * 2 * 2 - 1 = 1000 * 2 - 1
= 2000 -1
= 1999

Which is wrong.

However 500 * level * (level - 1) gives us:

500 * 2 * (2-1) = 500 * 2 * 1
= 1000 * 1
= 1000

The maths still work at lvl 1, as Alphawaves points out - to get to lvl 1, you need 0 xp, so:

500 * lvl * (lvl - 1) = 500 * 1 * (1-1)
= 500 * 1 * 0
= 500 * 0
= 0

In these examples I'm working left to right for the multiplication for slarity.

Do you realize that there are people out there that can actually make a MISTAKE when they take a level and thus want to take the level again? I don't believe for a second that you would have the ENTIRE level removed if you made a genuine mistake, instead of getting slammed by a timestop.

I'm an arsehole and believe if your going to Delevel you lose the whole level. Job system means you don't even need to hunt to get the level back.

Your post is offensive.

Do you realize that there are people out there that can actually make a MISTAKE when they take a level and thus want to take the level again? I don't believe for a second that you would have the ENTIRE level removed if you made a genuine mistake, instead of getting slammed by a timestop.

Blink,

Some people can honestly make that mistake. If that's the case and you catch it within a reasonable amount of time then I imagine (though can't quite speak for the DMs) they'll be inclined to simply run the process through once more.

However, at the same time, you ARE taking a DM's time (not much albeit, unless there's more to it then the last time I took to the client) and it'd behoove you to make sure you've got your ducks in a row.

Once you've chosen everything for your level, presumably with care, and given a list of all your changes you hope to make for the whole purpose of double checking everything you click a button to confirm.

If you don't use all the opportunities you have to avoid mistakes, then it's really your own fault. Taking the DMs time for such a mundane task isn't all that great, but still, is and should be allowed. But come on, if it's as bad as you say, Blink, then perhaps you need to really use those opportunities the levelling up process gives.

Actually its quite easy to make a mistake and have to keep going. Not always so easy to catch a DM online. Thats not an attempt shift blame on the DM's, but a statement of a truthful fact that coverage doesn't extend to every time and day. Remember also, that even when a DM is on, they may not have time to deal with you.

So it's really quite a viable mistake. It's not entirely realistic for someone to be asked to stop developing their character until they can catch a DM online. He also was being offensive. No need for swearing, still a PG-13 server I believe. At least I still get told off for swearing when I do it.
