Are surface drow still a viable RP/build char for on the surface?

I would suggest you be careful of the build regarding the alignment. I have a level 2 drow that I meant to have in the Elistraeen temple but apparently neutral can't get the quests and running around at level two is not happy.... well unless you enjoy the whole respawing again and again. Yep, even in a party :(

A good backstory and deciding where you'd like to fit in is helpful too. Basically, if you're a lone drow you should prepare for a very chilly welcome in most places. While some Elistraeens may be kind, there are others that are understandably wary. Underdark drow will want you for a little fun (ie torture, sacrifice :)). The current elven population may very well use the drow as something to decorate with arrows.... you get the picture.

That being said, I'd say if you're prepared for being treated poorly, a surface drow can make for some interesting RP.

Good luck!

That is, paradoxically enough, 'no'.

I'm going to go -way- off topic now.
----
I don't like Surface drow.

Why? Because there's so many, and they're almost all following the same concept - I'm good and dandy, accept me. If you don't accept me, you're a racist, and i will fling poo at you.
Now this is naturally a Crude generalisation, but that's how i perceive Surface drow.

Kudos to all the Elistraee drow; But in reality - There are just NOT THAT MANY. A drow is supose to be a evil scheming underdark race, not the everyday citizen in cordor!

-----
End rant.

They exist and there is a gigantic (relatively speaking) shrine to Eilistraee on the island as well as Winya Ravan being partially founded by 2 Eilistraeean Drow, the avatar of Eilistraee herself and an Elistraeean venerating moon elf. Deal with it.

I actually find the acceptance of outright evil races in good and/or neutral areas of the module to be somewhat amusing, I shan't like to see it go away. My character refers to Cordor as the "City of Tolerance" bitterly. No reason to dislike it OOC'ly if you can dislike it IC'ly instead. :)

acceptance of surface drow makes it so much easier to move around and scheme as an underdark drow as well.

Well, it makes sense for there to be a lot of surface drow. Once you already have quite a few, others on the mainland will hear of a place they can worship without prejudice and will no doubt come. A chance to avoid the rampant xenophobia everywhere else.

Clearly...cleary you have not hung around Beldor or the other drow he usually associates with. That's more like "Accept me? So? I don't know you. **** you. Don't accept me? Then **** you anyway."

Anyway, like Tormak said, Amia's not the norm on a lot of things. If you wanna gripe over how many non-evil drow there are walking around, might as well gripe that the sheer adventuring population we have on our small island is just as much as there is outside of the isle aka the rest of Toril. And the bulk of them are non-human. Just take it with a grain of salt.

Seconded.

My opinion. Make your surface Drow. But you better be damned sure you run your little ebony ass to that shrine of Eilistraee. Elsewise, don't complain to me when your hellball'd.

Actually, I think Winya Ravana was revived by them rather than being founded, it was an already existing elven city before then. That is my lore understanding, could be off. Honestly, though, you cannot expect us to be completely bound by past lore becuase some of it is just god-awful. The immigration law of amia, which I think can be found in the bookstore in cordor, is quite probably the worst FR lore I have ever seen. It completely denies religiousity, history, everything really. It reeks of being lore that comes after the fact, rather than leading to it.

That said, I dont mind the eilistraeens roleplay at all. Quite fun and overall most of them enjoy being picked on in my experience, it is sort of what playing an Eilistraeen is about. The server needs more llothite drow though. Maybe things will pick up down there soon, I hope so:D. The llothites are just an integral part of the FR setting, its not really the same without them.

Integral indeed. And not just in the circle of Elves that play Canon-Lore'd FR Elves... Almost all factions are affected in some way or another by Lolthite Drow. They are a prime evil syndicate in a way... In my opinion they are the most inherently evil race that resides in masses on Toril, before accessing another plane or plane jumping into the place.

Yes drow should be the epitome of evil on Amia. They are born and raised to be a plaything of their evil deity. They have nothing more to look forward to in life than to do acts that keep them in favor with Lolth. A drow should be constantly looking over their shoulder for a dagger in the hands of one of their companions as well as anything else they may run across. The I will kill/destroy/harm/betray you before you can do the same to me method of thinking should be the first on their mind. This RP isn't as seen as often as it used to be on Amia. The warm fuzzy Cordor feeling of the underdark on B has kind of made evil drow rp less evil. Most Winyan elves show less restraint with their morals than drow these days with the exception of a few drow that have gone to the surface to remind Amia that drow do not really care if they are accepted by others in Amia society.

Seeing a drow should cause a paranoid feeling. Seeing a group of drow should create fear. Seeing a war party should create panic.

Back in the "day" when Ultrinnan was thriving and there were like 6 drow houses all with pretty sizable active member counts, I began to notice something. Perhaps it's intentional, perhaps it's unintentional, but it happens. Someone sees a drow in purple and white with the tag "Solfavain d'Ustan'whatever" over their head and they would be instantly accepted. Then my drow comes up wearing blue and white with a nice "Tinnerai" attached to her name along with a few other drow with "Qos'Yutsu" or "Vandree" or "Arabett" attached to their names, all in disguise and instantly shunned. I could never figure out how you can stand two drow next to each other, both in "normal" clothing (not the pure black and one other color so prevalent in the UD) and someone can tell which is the surface drow and which is the Lolthite.

This of course didn't happen all the time, but I did see it happen enough that I began to take notice.

That is still going on, Ainjyll. Frankly it was easier for my drow to move around when the Tinnerai was removed from the name for a time.

She's got a lot of really nice disguises and yet is instantly recognized. Part of that is the reputation of Tinnerai I think, thanks to the dread Ilharesses I might add. Although, secretly I'm hoping its my drows reputation also.

In any case, I do have occasion to remind folk that they don't know her name and ask how they immediately know she's UD drow. The best response was "She smells like a Lolthite." LOL.

And I agree with Zanthair.

Why 'should' they, when the majority of drow you come across are good? After the initial mistrust is worn off by exposure, you're not necessarily going to fear every single drow you come across.

Well. 10.000 years of Mistrust and Experience should say otherwise. I dunno how long the drow have existed, but there's stories -everywhere- from their horrible acts.
And since amia consists of so many immigrants they're bound to bring these stories with them.

1000 years of internecine war with Arabs won't matter if you live in Jerusalem - you're not going to spend every second of your day cringing in fear when they're every second person you meet.
What it boils down to is that one can become desensitised by constant exposure - it's why shock advertising is less and less efficient. If you run into good drow and only good drow all the time, why could one not change their opinion? In fact, it would be surprising if you maintained the exact same feeling after being immersed that you had beforehand.

Can surface drow see when they go into the underdark? Real drow get their eyes destroyed when they go to the surface in the day, and it still hurts like a bitch when they go out at night. Is there any kind of damage they get to their eyes?

They can see fine. In 3E (The ruleset we use), Drow only suffer Light Sensitivity. Which is significant discomfort, and a-1 to AB, some Skills, and so forth.

Surface Drow are not limited to Elistraeens or good Drow. A few of us play the exiles, or the runaways. Drow hoping to make a profit in a world not dominated by religion, politics and gender. These Drow are few and far between but we exist. Generally we end up being seen as "Those other Drow that make no sense", but they do make sense, just nobodies bother to actually delve into their background.

I find it funny that the penalty is so low though, in War of the Spider Queen the sun is realy debilitating for the drow..way beyond those stats I would say.

Although I dislike the rampant amount of good drow on the server myself, I will have to agre with Yurrell. Basically psychology supports it, even if you heard heaps of bad things about drow, than on Amia, you meet nothing but goodies, even ones you start to feel warm too, stereotyping tends to die down. However, on a bright side, it gives us evil drow alot of work with.

Remeber the "I am just a harmless, good drow" act Drakos pulled first (or secoond >_>) time you saw him as Mel, lathandier?

No, not my contention -
Not everyone has to be immediately paralysed with paranoia / fear / horror at the sight of drow is my contention.
I am not arguing that everyone must like drow, that isn't the negation of everyone must (or, to quote the word used, 'should') be paranoid of drow (I'm using italics not as emphasis but to make it clearer which is the statement).

To put it short, the negation of:
For every person, person is paranoid of drow
is:
There exists at least one person who is not paranoid of drow

Which is what I'm saying. There is no 'should' in this beyond how your character would react.

Yeah, fair enough, but there is one thing you also need to consider: What is appropriate for the plot of the Forgotten Realms setting. I have no problem whatsoever witht he Eilistraeens, but it would be better for the server if drow had a worse reputation. It is part of the reason for playing an Eilistraeen, that you are a goodly being but appear to everyone else like a monster. Great fun really. Also, there is more to it concerning the themes of the relationship between lloth/corellon.

The problem is that anything higher would mean a lot of problems to said Drow, mind it might be good, but back in the days were the only hunting grounds for Drow the surface after they hit level 5 or so.

However, if they should get more severe penalties I'd suggest doing the same when a human (Or anyone without darksight for that matter) enters the Underdark.

On subsequent rounds, they are dazzled (The creature is unable to see well because of overstimulation of the eyes. A dazzled creature takes a -1 penalty on attack rolls, Search checks, and Spot checks.) as long as they remain in the affected area.

There's also daylight adaptation which nulls the penalties completely.

I would actually be all in favour of adding one round of blindness as soon as a drow enters daylight, for the first time per reset that is. Would add some immersion without ruining anything IMHO.

That already happens on every area transit.

It would probably just get annoying afterall, just let people roleplay it really. it would happen when youe ntered each new area, as well.

In War of the Spider Queen most drow are level 7(?) and don't have access to magical equipment to increase their uber AB. They also don't have super amia powerful enchanted armor, likely just wearing normal or +1 armor at best.

Remember that Amia's world allows for easier access to items and such that make the -1 AB laughable. Where as in the book -1AB and such would have been horrible and caused a heck of a lot of trouble of any army.

It already does.

And it goes off every time you go through a transition during the daytime. It gets very annoying.

Its practicularly useless anyway, since all the spawn points are quite a bit beyond a transition entry, and in PvP you can't attack someone who's just come through a transition as you can't attack on sight. It's only useful if your chasing down a Drow through transitions, and even then not so much since the Drow player will just press the W key and run straight ahead till it runs out, or scoff an invisabilty pot.

Tis a very silly addition that does nothing but annoy players of surface Drow. Don't quote it being PnP penalty to that race either, because quite frankely in PnP you can get used to the light and void the penalty on the surface, both blindness and AB I believe. Meaning us who have played surface Drow for years should be used to the light by now and no longer be sensitive to it. Truely a silly addition.

I believe the blindness should infact be removed. Leave the penalties as they are race penalties, but the blindness is just a waste of time. Either increase it so it actually has some effect, which it probably won't since you can just wait it out in most cases or hide, or get rid of the annoying thing.

If you increase the light blindness "effect" then I'm going to be the stubborn arse who makes the claim "do the same thing to surface races in subterranean regions."

And I'd support you. Fairness is fair.
