Just something that's been bugging me a bit lately as I see it more and more, and it's something I personally think should come to an end. Some people around the server take great strides to play here, and try really hard to enjoy themselves, only to find themselves shot down by petty shots both in game and on these forums.
I know some people that have difficulty with grammar, and many that have difficulty with spelling. Now I'm not talking about players of characters that have obvious speech flaws, but of people that make simple errors in what they type but try their best to make their point.
There are many reasons for this: Some people (such as myself) don't speak English as their native tongue, others have disorders, and some simply make mistakes.
I make mistakes all the time when trying to explain stuff, and I've also had IC replies from characters, were they choose to insult my characters for spelling a word wrong by adding the word "like this" and telling me that they don't know what "that" is.
I'm sorry if "Distruction" is too far away from "Destruction" when the word is used in the same context (one of my personal examples) that it merits going to such ends or hearing "prepare for a long reply" typed in party chat....
Amia has been a place that has not only improved my English ability, but I have also enjoyed the learning at the same time. I often see my mistakes after I've typed them, and it's tough sometimes to *correct them all, sometimes I don't even notice as the words tend to merge together.
I don't mind someone telling me that I've used or spelled a word wrong in a tell in a polite manner, but shameless insults fused together from someone with a greater understanding of the language is not only sad, it's also horribly insulting to the person behind the keyboard.
My point is, we are all human, and we all make mistakes. If you don't understand something that someone has said, you could ask them kindly to rephrase their point. Instead of thinking of sarcastic, hurtful ways to make the person feel bad for their errors and generally not even want to play anymore.
The short version:
Being an English major or a grade 3 spelling bee champion does not excuse someone from having common courtesy. If you think it does, go back to shining your trophy and your ego.

I'm a Grammar Nazi, but I amuse myself in private about it and don't shove it down anyone's throat. There's also a difference between honestly wanting to correct someone when he's using a fantasy word for example, and just being a dick about spelling mistakes. The former is good, the latter is disgusting and cheap.

Heh, I'm a bit of a grammar and spelling Nazi too, but I generally direct my ire solely at my own misspellings. I'm happy as long as the person I'm talking with has typed things well enough that I don't have to awkwardly ask "Um... what did you just type? I couldn't make out what you meant."
Beyond that, I second the desire for civility and understanding of people's minor spelling/grammar errors.

As long as people are courteous about it correcting mistakes should be appreciated, however it has no place in a game since it ruins immersion.

No one should have a go at you for spelling things incorrectly in game. If they can't understand, they can politely tell you that in a tell. Some people may politely try to tell you how to spell a word, but I'd take that as constructive advice rather than criticism unless they're being a jerk about it.
And they should never have a go at it ICly as it is very obviously an OOC mistake, since your character isn't standing there spelling the words out. I'm a bit of a grammar and spelling Nazi myself, but I keep that on myself - nothing peeves me off more than seeing someone whose English isn't the epitome of perfection insulting someone else for their spelling.

I'm going to make a character that talks a certain way to where using crazy spellings livens up his RP.
"Hey! How r u?"
"Les go 2 da forest!"
"::LMAO:: Dat wuz so funny, oh gawd!"
"Stop! I have 2 check u 4 drugz!"
I can see all the hate coming at me now... good times, good times...

I'm not going to correct somebody's spelling or grammar unless they ask if it's right. English is my primary language, and even I don't not be are getting it right always sometimes blarghity blarghity.
All's I know is I'm damn impressed with the amount of people using English as a second, third, or fourth language. I'm more than willing to forgive whatever mistakes are made, because I know I wouldn't be anywhere near perfect using another language.
And Gunz... I hate you forever. (Not really.)

I knew I'd get that kinda response. ^.^
What you may find surprising is that I actually considered really doing it -- if only for like a few minutes before realizing I would get hammered for doing it by most people. I would have been one of the ones hammering people for doing something like that too, until I had thought about it and how dialect can be used to great effect (look at well known authors and poets like Paul Laurence Dunbar and Paule Marshall). When I thought about it, I thought to myself "why the hell not?". And why not? If a poem using dialect becomes more meaningful because of the use of dialect, adding authenticity to the piece, why would this be any different? (although I do agree that "net" slang is pretty obnoxious) ::shrugs:: Just something I was thinking about.

My solution.
People who aren't up to par on English or are otherwise not very adept at grammar:
When making an IC post on the notice boards, put an //OoC note in saying something like "Please interprit as gramtically correct". I understand that your 40 Int mage who is fluent in 10 languagues will know how to spell correctly IC. It's not your fault, and at least you're trying. That way, if you have "I are looking for sure axe of strikes", we know what you meant was "I am looking for a surestrike axe" and wont have our IC grammar nazis interprit you as an orc.
As far as IC, perhaps put it in your bio way down at the bottom "//English is not my first language, please excuse" and we'll know what to expect. A lot of the time, this has been a problem for people I've RPed with when I'm not sure if they're just not adept at English or they're just not trying to RP well. Either way, you could spell thinks phonetically to me IC, and I wouldn't care, after all, I'm hearing what you say, not seeing it float up over your head IC.

Personally, I don't mind people correcting me if I write something incorrectly. If no one ever did, I'd probably still be writing maybe as "maby" like I did 5 years ago.
I can see why it would annoy others though. Especially with HOW some people go about doing it. Just sending a tell with how it's supposed to be spelled is enough, and not offensive. Having your char ICly mock someone for it, is. ICly, they can't really "see" the spelling error anyway, since most of the times when people write it wrong.. it's more or less correct phonetically.
My only pet peeve on grammar, if I have to pick one.. is people using your and you're incorrectly. As for not capitalizing, I can understand that one, because sometimes I personally just miss the shift, and don't bother hopping all the way back for one single letter.

I have to admit, this does bug the crap out of me too. But a lot less now. My critical eye on English rules is taking a back seat, slowly but surely. I still see it and realize the flaws, I just don't see the need to go around correcting people. This isn't an English course, it's a game. Besides, I'm no grammar god myself.

As long as the people know what you are saying, then there is no need for correcting spelling errors, since characters don't see the words, they hear them.

Solution: If someone spells something incorrectly in game, type your response with the word included.
Eg: "let's go to the forast!"
"...Why would we go to the forest?"
No one feels insulted, and there is about a 90% chance they'll spell it right next time. Works wonders.

I do not mind spelling mistakes, mostly because I make alot of them myself. Not all of us are brits, aussies or yankees after all. For some reason I often type 'the' as 'teh', which always makes em shameful because I know its horribly wrong and very noobish.

Hehe, I always have a giggle when correcting people but don't, like people have said, shove it down their throats. If the word isn't too far off or pretty just sounds the same I'll just tear my hands off the keyboard before I send a tell or correct them.
Unless it's something like: Shure. Boneus. Or, swoowd (sword). ^.^ And if they tell me to stay quiet, I'll do so.

I type rather slowly, and often change my mind during writing itself, in favor of a better formulation, and since I can't see where I'm at I make mistakes. It's a habit I'm trying to get rid of, but years of forum-rp have left me with certain inadequacies for intant-rp.

If people consistently misspell words in a way that makes reading difficult or simply too... amusing, and thus distracting, to read... it's time to bring out the GNS*.
Missing/wrong letters here and there, however, are probably slips and misclicks and not worth mentioning.
However, I am now going to point out that it's English, and not Enlish. Too good an opportunity to resist.

Actually distruction is a bit far, as it's also close to "Distraction". You can see the confusion people may have.
Which brings me to my point. If you can't spell well, or have typo's a lot (I sure do), then thats fine, but don't leap on someone if they ask you what the word was meant to be. As it could simply be an honest matter of confusion between two words that are close to the misspelling. Don't jump on someone who is asking to clear it up.
Edit: Yep, already found two mistakes. Bloody grammar.

Spelling & grammar Nazi here as well (though sometimes my punctuation's a bit iffy). Most of those who play Amia are quite fluent in English and I (try to) excuse those who aren't on the grounds that it isn't their first language. I am less tolerant of errors by people for whom English is the first language. In general, I try to adopt the same principle I used when grading undergrad University papers (some of which, for native speakers, were abysmal) - if I have to strain to understand it, I won't bother.
That being said, in 4 years I've only avoided RPing with a handful of people for that reason.

English is my second language and I make mistakes all the time. Also, I sometimes am the typo queen, depending of how tired is my brain.
People when teaching me how to write something usually do so in tells, and I correct in game. Many times I know the word is wrong, I want to use it and what I do is to add (sp) for help.
Amia has improved my English ten folds. Better than the classes I took at the University. I learned facial expressions, I learned new words and many things I have never had contact with a formal classroom.
Grammar, well, that I didnt learn much. But, my vocabulary is now rich in three languages.

I'm a horrible, horrible, horrible speller with an above average vocabulary. Which is the exact reason I have spellcheck.
I've been known to correct someone's spelling if I see them mistype the word repeatedly. I always do my best to be polite as possible about it and the people are usually my friends and constant RP companions for me to notice that they keep messing up that one word. But, also, the very first sentence I put up on this post goes to show that if I'm noticing the mistake, then it's gotta be pretty bad.

Everyone suffers from typos now and then. And you know what? It's not going to make much difference if you manage to write 'the' instead of 'teh' on the fourth attempt.
If we were all required to adhere to a strict spelling and grammar policy, even people whose native language is English would have trouble nailing 30wpm.

That is all you need really for french. (Good day, good evening. Hello, I am Jannis and I am 22 years old. One potate and one baguette please. For everyone who doesn't speaks french.)
My french sucks though, buuut as I said before, that is all you need.

Granted, before Amia I was playing MUDs, and well, there your English was like your looks in RL. If they were bad you'd be ignored, if they were well you'd be happily accepted. *Shrug*

English is my first language but i suck at it so bad, a bit due to me busting my head open a couple years back and mostly because ive always been bad at spelling and grammar.
i wouldn't really mind someone correcting me aslong as they werent being rude or cheeky about it. plus ive bad habit that when i spell something wrong in a sentence i just carry on talking as if i didnt spell anything wrong, dat is unless the people im with dont know what i meant, then i happily TRY and correct it.

I'm a grammar nazi, and English is my first language (I took American Sign Language as my second language and I suck at it), so I usually just politely say something in a tell if there's a mistake. However, when I'm tired? My typing goes out the window. I'll think one thing and type another. Happens to the best of us.
I correct Dri the most often (XD) but she's asked me to do it, so I don't feel bad about it. And if I don't understand a sentence with anyone else, chances are the person doesn't speak English natively (which I don't think is a word... whatever), so I just ask them to clarify to me in a tell. Especially if I am the one they're talking to.

I'm an English Major and suffer from noticing every little minor error that someone makes. Only I can't correct people for it because I'd feel like a prick if I did. Anytime there's a grammar or spelling error in RP, I completely disregard it and pretend it wasn't there. Unless it's intentional and used as an IC language barrier, like with those silly monster races.
I don't think anyone should be criticizing or insulting anyone IC or OOC for spelling/grammar mistakes. Unless you're perfect yourself, you have no right.

i pretty much never bother to use capital letters at the start of my sentences to increase the speed in which i interect, such as no capitral i's and such cause i get bored when i can type three sentences in the time my friend can only type 1 @_@ i do however feel that capitalizing the first letter adds a certain emotion to it and use it with certain characters or statements.

Bwehe... I guess Infernal's lurking around these forums quietly fixing grammar and spelling.

English is a hodgepodge of every other language ever. I don't speak every language so if I screw up a word or phrasing, sod it. I try, but my brain is too busy focusing on the details of the inner workings of my character's mind and responding as they would to be bothered with such completely trivial things like pointing out if someone spelled segue - segway, or they forgot that forfeit, or society are exceptions to the I before E rule.
Needlessly being a (censored) over something so minor won't win you any friends or respect. Now if someone wants help an asks for it, give it, but that isn't carte blanche to be a douche.

Quality over quantity darlin'.

A tool cannot have errors: instead, it can only be used to ill effect. Language is a tool. Language cannot have errors: instead, it can only be used to ill effect.
Language, and by extension, tools, can also be used to great effect.
This is why I find it rather douchey to correct spelling and/or grammar. Neither can be "incorrect".
