Sylvan is not Druidic. Druidic is a sacred ritual language the druids never teach to outsiders. They get it automatically, AFAIK. I doubt you can carry a conversation in it, as it surely lacks most every-day and modern words. Sylvan is an actual language, and druids don't learn it automatically (though I believe it is a selectable bonus language for them).

The books simply state druids never teach the language to outsiders/only druids know the language. You can speculate whether this is because they won't or because there's some magical barrier preventing it, but it shouldn't even be a concern: don't play a druid who would do that, don't play a PC who would've learned it.

Personally, I doubt there's anything magical about it. It's just sacred, and we know nothing stays sacred in D&D unless it's explicitly prohibited by rules.

As for reading vs. writing: I imagine most scholars know all the major alphabets of Faerûn. (Espruar, Dethek and that third one?) I also imagine it's not a great feat to translate languages you can't speak: reading is much easier than listening or discussing, as I'm sure anyone who's ever studied languages can attest to. If you know the grammar and some key words, you can easily translate text with a few good pieces of reference. But that would be a scholarly thing.

Bah, you're correct Iron. I had confused the two. Found the entry from wizards site talking about 3.5 ed.

Quote:
Bonus Languages: A druid's bonus language options include Sylvan, the language of woodland creatures. This choice is in addition to the bonus languages available to the character because of her race (see Race and Languages and the Speak Language skill).

A druid also knows Druidic, a secret language known only to druids, which she learns upon becoming a 1st-level druid. Druidic is a free language for a druid; that is, she knows it in addition to her regular allotment of languages and it doesn't take up a language slot. Druids are forbidden to teach this language to nondruids. Druidic has its own alphabet.

Assuming druidic is a knowledge, a fallen druid or an ex druid would still retain the knowledge of the language, and could therefore teach it to others consequences be damned. Maybe he got banished by the circle and does so out of spite? Being forbidden to teach it to non druids is meaningless since some may simply not care about breaking rules.

REaly any language that can be learned, can also be justified in some way no matter how rare or unlikely it is. If I want to play Jon Doe farmer who knows to speak mulan for example. His widowed mother married a mulan adventurer who came into their village and was forced to setle down due to injuries, he taught his mother tongue to his adopted son. Doesnt mater that they would not bother teaching their language to lesser people, this one did. Moreso since mulan is a free subrace, someone can create one and go around teaching it if he wants.

I sure will flat out ignore any non-druids speaking druidic, and just assume they speak common. If I play a druid encountering non-druids speaking druid, I believe he is entiteled to smack them so hard that they will un.learn it.

Besides, druidic, as Iron pointed out, is a langauge that lacks most modern word. Druidic has for instance no word for 'Castle', 'Dungeon', 'Finance', 'Bigbys Grasping Hand' etc. Atleast not in 2e, and I doubt it has changed since. Druidic is a language used by druids to discuss matters of wildlife, flora, etc, so it does not need words for things that are not in nature. And yes, this is a petpeeve of mine.

And there is no such thing as an Animal language.

A Druid teaching Druidic to a non-Druid falls. Excommunication is mortal business and would depend on RP. Although, if your fellow Druids find out about this, it's probably likely to happen.

Well, the language is Sylvan. Fey speak it too(it's the language of Nature). And I wouldn't put it as harsh as an auto-fall for just teaching it to a non-druid. What if the druid is teaching someone who's trying to become a druid, after all? It's not as cut and dried as that.

Anyway, AFAIK, teaching Sylvan isn't something a druid can fall from. They haven't violated nature in any way, nor gone against any nature deity's dogma (I dont recall any at least saying you couldn't teach it). It's just like Dwarves and Dwarven/Runic: They're just very reluctant to teach anyone who isn't of their kind. And if the rest of their kind were to find out and find that the person did it without good reason, then yes, they might be exiled, excommunicated, or otherwised punished. But Falling is left up to the gods, not social stigma.

Teaching Sylvan isn't something they can fall for, but teaching Druidic is.

Edit: Oops! Didn't realise there was a second page. Cappuccino was ready

Edit: Ooops! I meant "Teaching Sylvan isn't something "

To say they will fall, but that they could (or could not) teach the language after that is empty speculation, though. I go by the letter of the law in this case:

Quote:
A druid also knows Druidic, a secret language known only to druids, which she learns upon becoming a 1st-level druid. Druidic is a free language for a druid; that is, she knows it in addition to her regular allotment of languages and it doesn't take up a language slot. Forget the latter part, "Druids are forbidden to teach this language to nondruids." That only explains how druids conduct themselves. The first sentence already tells you everything necessary about the question at hand: the secret language is known only to druids. Could you theoretically teach it to non-druids? Maybe so, but that's just theory. The fact of things as they are in the world, is that not a single non-druid knows this language.

Possibility and existance are two different things, and the former is irrelevant in this case. It is explicitly stated only druids know this language. Others might have the potential to learn, but as soon as that potential actualized, the above canon excerpt would no longer stand. That is why it will never happen.

I'd like to agree with you on that, but I'm forced not to on the simple fact that there are/where characters who speak Druidic because they used to be Druids but aren't anymore. I know of two, specifically. One character is dead and the other is played by a DM.

What does that imply about characters who are no longer druids - do they lose the language, since by that reasoning there exists no non-druid that can speak it?

If I may, how does someone quit being a druid?

It's a class, so unless you rebuild, you couldn't quit being a druid. If you rebuild, you generally lose all skill's and abilities associated with a class. That would include class specfic languages I'd say, as rebuilding with no hint of the druid class you had would suggest something dramatic has happened to remove all the knowledge the character once had. Something I imagine the DM's would take into mind when the request for such a rebuild was made.

In that is the case would it not depend rather on if the language is gifted from the nature gods, or a simple secert language?

Bah. There's really no need for anyone to speak Druidic except druids.. and even then it's only in their rituals. Rather than trying to figure out empirically why druids only know it and if it gets revoked upon falling just do what I do; take any non-druid speaking it with a grain of salt like the 1/4 Red Dragon Aasimar or the quarter-fiend-half-elf genasi likely standing behind him.

Because it's a secret language and can clearly be used for secrets and codes, like Iroquois.

I thought it was Navajo... meh.

The thing is that you don't learn the language until you're a druid. So not really justifyable by "I'm teaching him to be a druid" now that I look back on it. Either way, it's still just a language, albeit a sacred one. No need to dream up some magical way the language is zapped from an ex-druid. Just smack the person in the mouth DMside everytime you see some non-druid speaking it. I mean seriously, if someone's gonna go to learn such a specific language, they might as well hang out and be a druid.

Whatever reason one comes up with or whoever teaches it to the non-druid, I'm likely just gonna write it off along with all the other near-zero-chance things that walk around Amia. It's just like "Okay, I get it, your PC is really really unique for knowing Druidic, now let's see where the RP goes."

Lets open the discussion up to writing... Just cause you can speak a language doesnt mean you can read and write it.

Mulan is written in cuniform,
Dwarven in runes,
Elves have their own runes I think....

I am sure there is commonized versions of all of them. Like russian being written with english alphabet instead of cyrillic or whatever. But so many peopel seem to understand everything...

I know we are all epic and stuff, but memorizing different languages like a native is tough tough tough! Speaking 2-3 languages with the same proficientcy is amazing and would take serious luck where you grow up or education.

I try to ignore all emotes done in other languages as best I can, but I admit it is kind of impossilble!

Just an idea...

In D&D it is assumed that you have the ability to write in any language you speak, unless you're a barbarian.

I already talked about it, and I'd say it's the other way around: just because you can read a language doesn't mean you can write or speak it. Writing being easier than speaking. I imagine reading is very easy to most scholars.
Quote:

I guess you've grown up in the barbaric States, but I believe the majority of the world's countries has more than one language. Theoretically every Finn speaks English and Swedish no problem, in addition to Finnish. And that's not a lot. An educated European probably speaks English, German, French and their native language, at least. And maybe Latin. It's no rocket science.

Yurell: I am not sure, but I believe that only applies to PCs/adventurer classes, though. And it's a game convenience, not to be taken too seriously.

About Druidic: It's not elaborated on, so I'd not cook up any mysterious explanations. Simply make sure your non-Druid PC never gets into a situation where he'd learn the language, and maintain the status quo as it's supposed to be. Whether your fallen druid knows Druidic or not is irrelevant, if you never put him into a position where it would matter. (I can't imagine how it would, since I doubt you're conducting sacred rituals anymore.)

Oh yea!

I can imagine someone with a high INT actually doing that, when they don't even know what the language is.

According to this there is a precedence of non druids understanding or speaking druidic though at least on amia. Apparently it did come up as people know about it.

Example, if druids are discussing something in druidic and one of the above mentioned characters happens to overhear, should he ignore it and not understand what was spoken?

Yes, IMO.

Though I'll laugh at any druids discussing things in druidic. I think of it as a ritual language.

Which is exactly my reason for writing off non-druids who'd speak it. No offence to anyone who's characters are non-druid and somehow know it, but it comes across to me OoC as some just going a bit overboard. It's not even a feasable language, it's more like a code and assumed that most of its words are just in the scope of druidic rituals. Even if your character is a linguist, something more in a passing interest seems a bit... forced.

In other words, if I see some non-druid carrying on a conversation in Druidic, I'm either assuming the PC is supposed to be a know-it-all or the player is trying to make the PC a know-it-all. That's just my OoC opinion, I'll RP with them with no prejudice, of course. But OoCly it brings back feeling I got when I saw a PC who was a hybrid of I believe 5 different races in his bio.

The two character who are known to know/have known Druidic stay/stayed alive because they weren't "enemies of the balance". That is, they don't do things that are anti-Nature and aren't trying to teach people the language (that my Druid knew about anyway). You can probably count on being hunted down mercilessly if you were trying to teach Druidic to non-Druids as an ex-Druid. ;)

Agreed on the writing/reading vs speaking thing. It's MUCH easier to learn to read and write a language than it is to speak it or understand others speaking it. I can read and write French well, but hell if I can hold a spoken conversation in it.

It's very easy to learn to read and write a language - you don't even need to be very intelligent. It's spoken language that's difficult. So I wouldn't be surprised if a level 30 mage or bard could read 30 different languages. I would, however, question any character that claimed to understand the spoken varieties of more then 10 (and even that's a lot).

I agree that it seem abit ridiculous that some character can speak 10+ languges and not show any sign of the learned languages bleeding into eachother as a concequence. Personally, I believe it should just go like (Bonus Languages Known = INT modifier + Skill points in Speak Language). Which we don't have. Prehaps having skill points unlearned and call them Speak Language points is best, like suggested by someone above, but I can't be bothered to take two seconds to scroll up and check their name...

Although one point on languages, not really that off-topic, but does this irk anyone else when someone switches between languages for no apparent reason, for example...

(Llothite Lapdog): (Drow) Bella'dos, my friend, let us go muster our fashkan for the coming raid

as opposed to...

(Still a Llothite Lapdog): (Drow) Thank you, my firend, let us go muster our forces for the coming raid.

A bad example, but it gets the point across. It seems alittle pointless to put the (Drow) tag there if your going to type the language anyway and in my experience, it does get a tad annoying when you don't know what the person you talking to is even saying!

Some words are for flavour - bella'dos, for example, or vendui'. Others are because translation is annoyingly tedious, such as Ulath'tallar = archpriestess vs Yath'tallar = High Priestess. The other stuff, though, when people dump unnecessary words in a fictional language despite the whole sentence already being in that language annoys me too, though.

Not knowing a language is more fun than knowing one. If there ever is a hard rule about this, it should be Int mod at character creation at the highest.

Naw, any char, you just got to spend two points per language instead of one. 30 is overkill though (are there even that many?), the most a character would need is 10-15 really. Just showing that a character knowing 30 languages is actually not only valid but supported by PnP language rules.

Nope. CC skills are capped at half the amount you can get on normal skills (afaik, of course)

Yes, but by PnP rules, you also need to study the language first and get DM approval for learning it.

Number one rule is that it must make sense and be cool. Number two, DM must agree. The mechanical rules are only number three, and I'd use them only as a rough guideline.

We can't supervise people on Amia 24/7, but that doesn't mean we won't intervene if you failed step 1.

Can somebody be so kind to look up my usual rant about the DnD language (and in extenso the ability system) system being retarded and post it here?

I still think we should implant the Gibberish Languages.

So you could actually speak a language; instead of just going (Dwarven) or (elven)...

But that's a WHOLE other topic.

If I'm not mistaken that not only spams the DM channel mercilessly, but it's also complete gibberish and has no real form, meaning that what is Elven for "sword" one time won't be the same as the next time it's used.

It's been suggested numerous times ... there are plenty of old threads with arguments on both sides.

This is a friggin' old topic, but with all the language discussions going on, I'm gonna say that this is one of the best suggestions of late.

The implementation of "Gibberish". Aka you write like /s for Sylvan, and blabla something pops up, but for those who can speak the language, there will be actual words.

Why did i bump this? -
Well, mainly because i just saw a kid speak celestial, infernal, demonic, then shifted to drow and elven.

And he was a halfling. I mean ,christ... The amian playerbase NEED some restraint on the language side. Because people are going nuts.

I don't think Disco should work implementing a system that he himself has explained a bunch of times sin't a great thing simply because you had 1 bad experience with 1 person, otherwise by that logic the entire server would be No PvP now.

Well, this hin was -one amongst many- , but he himself crossed the line, and filled the goblet. Sort of.

It causes too much lag for a server of this size. The server I played at before Amia has that feature, but it's a tiny community with only 1 to 3 players on at a time usually, unless there's some set event where all the little cool insider kids are invited. It works well there and it's a nice feature, but for a server this size, forget about it.

On that note, please please PLEASE type out the language.

I had an incident where someone said [Dr] We should talk in private.

So of course my character replies [Drow] Ohh, 'private'

Then I get a tell that it was Draconic. Fortunately My char spoke that too *coughs* So, not a big deal.

Still, type out these damn languages *shakes fist* Or I shall smite smite smite!

It makes no sense at all to expect all players to speak English and to give them a way to converse in code at the same time. In the end it's just a fab way to exclude part of the player base and I don't like that concept at all. Still, you are free to invent your own gibberish code.

I still like the idea of having 'slang' .. the kind that you could build into any conversation and only if you knew what you were looking for would it be important.

My opinion on the whole Lore thing:

If you want your bard to be able to speak additional languages, pick up some INT and get the Linguist job. Don't just "expect" to be able to know languages because of whatever made-up story you can pull out of your head. Just because it doesn't fit into your "build" isn't an excuse.

My monk has barely two int modifier and knows only Common, Dwarvish, Duergar and Thieves' Cant. And he knows enough Drow only to be able to recognize the language. He can't understand anything they're saying however.

I get so tired of seeing bumbling stumbling warriors walking around with negative int modifiers with no linguist job that are able to speak Common, Dwarven, Duergar, Thieves' Cant, Drow, Elven, Draconic, Abyssal, Celestial, etc etc every single language until you can't think of any more to exclude them from your conversation so that they know how to say "I LIKE PIE!" in every language known to the realm and know everything you're saying.

I exclude people like that from my RP for the very reason that they don't know how to respect another person's RP and it belittles us all to just pretend that just because they don't like feeling left out on an OOC level, they have to ruin the RP by killing immersion. So, Disco, in regards to the exclusion feeling, I feel I must disagree to a certain extent. It would keep things like this from happening so much, but at the same time, I do disagree with the gibberish code thing as it just leaves -everyone- out on an OOC level.

Just know who you're RP'g with and understand what their behaviours are. If you know someone is going to kill your immersion when you start speaking in another language just because they're immature and want all the attention focused on them, just ignore it and choose another avenue for RP. Is it disruptive to the natural flow of your RP? Yes. Is there anything we can do about it right now other than ignore it? No. Roll with the punches.

Made-up stories such as you have the skillpoints left over and Speak Language isn't included in NWN (but hey, that won't stop people insisting that spot or listen is the same as Sense Motive!) and you spent a large amount of time RPing learning the damn language?
