I recently noticed a lot of people getting ooc upset with me for IC actions. I do not mean any disrespect towars other players. My current character is a prick but a prick with morals. He will rude to you for being different then him, for dying and being 'weak', for jacking to much loot, etc. And I keep it IC....

For those of you who talk to me in tells and on msn and such often, Im sure you understand! Well I hope, I really am a sweetheart, just not IC

Just wanted to explain what was up and open up some talky on the subject. I dont conform to cozy fuzzy circle jerk roleplay sorry guys! Conflict, even a minor amount is fun.

Tell me what you think.

Keeping OOC lines of conversation open maintains fun for all. Adding the disclaimer "My characters a jerk, but I'm not" sometimes help in the bio, too. Although I don't see why people can't separate IC from OOC events.

OOC courtesy goes a very long way, from my experience playing an evil bastard.

Which is not a comment on you Pigeon, since I haven't even RPed with you yet.

RE-EDIT:

so yeah.... If I see someone being a tool to me ICly and I don't hear anything from them OOCly, I have no room to assume anything different than the player is also a tool. OOC chat always helps when you're playing a character that is unpleasant. Your character reflects you, unless otherwise noted, and even then you are always responsible for your character's actions.

With different expectations of roleplaying and general online behavior, its entirely possible that IC actions do ruffle OoC feathers, even without that intent. Perhaps many people that you have encountered really cannot distinguish between IC and OoC, as there are many of those online. However, I also wonder if some quirks you have are just bugging the heck out of people on an OoC level. No, I am not trying to blame the original poster, just mentioning something I have seen.

For instance, many people I have encountered consider emoting ignoring someone to be the height of rudeness, as its seen as basically brushing someone off with an emote. Other people however, consider it more rude to never use that emote, as messages are often missed while talking, especially with RP during battle or in more spamiful areas such as the Cordor Square, its better to actually acknowledge someone new and show that you saw them.

Unfortunately, you cannot win them all, and I must echo the thought of being polite OoC, if not more so. Tone is hard to convey and what might seem like a light hearted joking tone easily comes across as sarcasm.

I don't use this OOC thing that people of the imaginarium use.

My character is my character in an IC environment. I see no reason why I should need to explain my characters IC behaviours in an OOC fashion and nor should anyone else. Or give a warning in their bio. Amians break immersion far too often as it is.

I've played with Pidges character, he's playing it nearly exactly right bar some lore gaps that will come with time as he learns the background of the character.

Considering that Amia is a RP server and you are to remain IC as much as possible and should separate your OOC commentary with some form of notation (usually // when in the talk channel), one should always err on the side of caution and assume that the person staring at the other screen isn't really a complete and utter d-bag and is actually a nice person.

After spending several years playing drow (who seem to be in just this position pretty often), I've noticed that there are a few things that can be done to alleviate any hurt OOC feelings. The ones that come to mind first would be to keep party chat light and friendly if the recipients of your characters d-baggery are in party and if they aren't then toss them a quick tell saying something short and to the point, such as "This is an IC action and not any attempt to hurt you OOC'ly." or something to that effect.

However, I don't feel that all the responsibility should lay on the shoulders of those that play evil characters or just people who happen to play real jerks because it isn't their fault that others are incapable of separating IC actions and OOC actions. Those who take offense at IC actions should step back and inspect what's going on.

I know that I've RP'd with people as a nasty character early in the day and jumped on them like a spider monkey hopped up on Mountain Dew IC'ly. Later that day, while playing a different character RP'd with the same person and gotten along famously.

The whole thing can be diffused with a little bit of OOC cordial behavior and a quick moment of reflection.

I honestly don't buy this... if a character acts like a rude jerk, it's because the player chose to roleplay him that way. People say the above sentence as an excuse, saying it's just their character that is mean, but they forget that it was them who decided to play him that way. They created a jerk out of their own free will. Each time a char says something nasty, it's because the player knowingly and consciously had them act like that. OCC ladden insults on the IC boards are quite common, hidden behind a veil of IC.

Maybe you're biased. It certainly seems like you are from the tone of your writing. Regardless, this is a role playing game. A game specifically to act out what you will, heedless. I think you need to be a bit farther removed from your characters if you have such vitriol for people who play jerks or assholes in character. They exist as a part of any fantasy world, a mantle anyone can pick up. Regardless of their reasons, desires, or -actual- disposition in real life, your response shouldn't contain as much flaccid rage as it does in this post.

Isnt that what Role Playing is? Playing the role of your character, whether they be unfriendly, stupid, or otherwise? Wouldnt the evil guys in movies be so horribly boring if they were played by people who were nice guys/gals in real life, and decided to apply that to the character the script writers had given them?

GreatPigeon, I've had a blast roleplaying with your current character, and I encourage you to keep up the awesome work.

EDIT: Or inaftertroll, take your pick.

Yes, but players don't have to choose to make a friendly character. Playing a jerk isn't the same as being one on an OOC level.

If you want to go into an extensive psychoanalysis of it, you could say that people who are actually excessively nice OOC could feel the subconscious pull of having a less nice PC and liberate all that pent up nastiness that they consciously do not allow out in their real relationships / discussions with people online. The greatest of authors could not make a very lively and credible set of different characters if they did not have a vast mental and emotional life themselves, and that includes inner-conflicts, because as much as people don't think they draw on their own resources when creating a character, that's untrue, seeing as how you could not comprehend a certain attitude or mannerism if you hadn't experienced it yourself, outwardly or inwardly (remember the last time you looked at someone and thought “What the heck is he thinking?”).

Surely, extreme empaths could even extend their own knowledge of various behaviors that are not part of their own repertoire, but the moment they understand it, it gets integrated in their mental vastness. Detaching yourself from you "real" stable self, through role-play, just gives you more access to repressed, subconscious dimensions of your own personality which are consciously subdued, because you don't want to be that way in your daily conduct, your real self-presentation. So role-play gives your inhibitory tendencies room to let go and set free a colorful array of attitudes you would never want to pop up in your long-term, real behavior. Of course, no one is really conscious of how this happens or how their subconsciously rejected courses of conduct are now inspiring them on character creation, nor should they be held accountable for things they choose not to be IRL.

You’re your own creation and IC things should not be taken as something you seriously want to be, but something that’s part of you, hidden even in some cases, and a necessary cathartic means. Some people just don’t allow their vastness to manifest in any way, as you may be doing too, because the suppressing factor is still there. Set yourself free from social, parental and personal conditioning and have fun! :D

What the psychiatrist in the works said and just adding that playing a tactful evil character requires a lot of work to make him work for the ooc enjoyment of all.
I think we have had this discussion before somewhere, simply can't recall the thread now. Though again my major point is, be considerate of other players but on their neck icly and you tend to be fine.

Also Selv, I brutally murdered one of your double posts.

I uuuused to do the little OOC PM thing when my characters are jerks, but I rarely do it anymore. I pretty much see it how Chris sees it. But I do sometimes feel the need to PM OOCly when my character is a super jerk. I've gotten the silent treatment one to many times because of my character being a jerk by a few people. Some people are just overly sensitive or something, I guess.

But still, why should I have to answer OOCly for IC actions? That's.... silly. We're role playing here, acting.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think you understand what role playing is if this is how you see it. Role playing is like acting; we play the parts of different types of personalities to make a diverse and interesting world to have fun in. Look up role playing and acting. It's not about being nice and sitting around with avatar's of ourselves or mirrors of ourselves. That game is called Second Life and sometimes the Sims.

We have to separate OOC from IC. I'll admit I have some problems with this at times, especially when I come across a very nasty character who has no obvious IC reason for being such a way other than "That's just how he is."

I have to say that if you're going to play a nasty rude character, you need to have a reason for that character to be the way they are. Whether that be as simple as their place of origin, their upbringing, whatever. Just don't play a character a certain way and have no IC reasons for them to be that way. Hell, you can even give them a split personality complex or just insanity. Anything, something, to explain why they are the way they are.

Finding out why your character is the way they are is one of the key driving points of roleplay and one of the more fun paths if you ask me. Regardless of how you -want- to RP your character, they're going to have a background and it should be known or figured out by you, even if by nobody else.

I'm not saying you have to go around explaining your character to everyone you meet OOCly in-depth but at least have a reason. I believe most people are legitimately RP'g their characters the way the character is meant to be played but I also believe there are -some- who just use their character as an outlet for angst or aggression and don't invest any time or effort into trying to establish a personality for the character beyond just being a rude nasty git.

I'm not one to pass judgment on who is guilty of this at all, but I will maintain my opinions and stick to the belief that while it is on the individual to separate IC from OOC, there will always be those out there (on both ends of the spectrum - receiving and giving) who will not be able to do it.

A good thing to remember is, that even online, most people are not deliberately trying to insult you, even if it sometimes sounds like that. Very personal commentary might indeed be aimed to insult you in particular, but anything else doesn't warrant a reaction. Your time in life is too precious to take extra stress from stuff like that.

I find your post offensive. :P

--

Alright, so... just my input on the subject matter. I generally find that assholes are very good at roleplaying similar characters, but non-assholes are pretty good at playing assholes too. Because of this it's safest to assume that the person you are playing with is average - neither decent nor a douche. If you, at some point in the future, find the person not to be someone who'd be worth your time IRL, then they probably aren't worth your RP efforts, either.

Some people can play the jerk card well. Others just give headaches. Assume they'll do neither at first.

No, but evil can be. For that matter, so can good. Being an arsehole is not necessary a reflection on one's alignment.

Yeah, for the record, I've met more "good" jerks than evil ones here.

And yes Tae is a jerk a lot of the times, but it is kinda a result of the work he does. Being a guard in a city where people persist in doing stupid illegal things makes anyone grumpy.

I'm a nicer person than my character (I can still be kind of a jerk) but I never ever EVER act ICly based on my personal feelings. (For example, not to name names but there are one or two players I don't really like at all but my character gets along with fine, and conversely there are people I like as players but my character is obliged to dislike.)

It is very simple. There are four people involved in these interactions. Two players, two characters. The interaction between the characters DOES NOT ALWAYS OR EVEN USUALLY REFLECT THE FEELINGS OF THE PLAYERS. At least, when both the players are good RPers it doesn't. I'll admit you do find an asshat now and then.

My two cents: some people RP the way they do, because in real life they feel strongly disinclined to act as such. RP is a decent outlet for repressed feelings.

For instance, my only character is completely feral. She spanks the blood of her foes onto her face and arms, smokes and drinks like a trencherman, is completely and willfully ignorant of any semblance of law or order, and one of her favorite hobbies is harassing the city Kobolds and Goblins.

Does this mean I have a repressed desire to kick midgets...?

... Hmm. Excuse me.

There's a difference between playing an evil or rude character and being a jerk. Just so you know what kind of stuff I am talking about: http://www.amiaworld.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=44964

What's the point of making fun of the guy for getting the name wrong? At least tell him the real name if you got to be nitpicky, it's not as if anyone didn't know what he really meant though. And what's the point of posting that you think the character is stupid other than to insult the player occly, since ICly no message was left and there's nothing to react to? I thought though bubble insults were frowned upon, how that's different.

The earlier mentioned Ron tends to go out of his way to pick apart people's posts for spelling mistakes which again is just plain OCC nastiness. (a dyslexic player he picked on this way actually left the server because of it)

There's nothing wrong with being a jerk IC. I'd not describe GreatP's paladin as a jerk either, mulans by defintion see themself superior to everyone else, and a pally all so more.

Quote:

You fail to grasp the concept of RP. I find it highly offensive you consider every other char that is played in that way to be an OOC jerk.

As a general note, I find it a bit strange a player gets OOC flak for playing a character. Shame on you all who OOC hassled Pidge.

I'm not sure what you mean. The only example I could find with a cursory look over that thread that could be considered "thought bubble" was the comment by the ink-splotcher. And even then, the OP IC'ly went along with it.

That said, on your last comment, yeah, that's just sort of being a jerk. Im prteyt usre uyo cna tlel hwta Im' sinayg, rgeradsles of teh seplilng. The only important thing in a post is whether or not the message gets across.

But that's neither here nor there. This is a thread about IC jerkiness vs OOC jerkiness, while picking apart spelling on the forum is purely OOC. I'm not really seeing the fault in that thread.

EDIT: Post in reply to moon

I play mostly evil characters, not sure why.. I find it more amusing and fun for myself. If people are disagreeing about my choices I couldn't care less to be honest.
I am however taking extra precaution when I rob people people with my bandit character, I tell them it is nothing personal etc. and I don't accept In-Game money unless we are talking low amounts.

I play a Banite but I can't say anyone has said to my face, nor gotten the impression that someone thinks I'm an a**hole.
It is a game, a role playing game. And if people can not accept the fact that not everyone likes to play paladins who picks flowers on their spare time, then they should not play the game.

Evil characters makes Amia more interesting I think.

I invite you to take things a little bit less personally, those were simple IC reactions of characters who would comments on something like that the way they did. I have a character who would have reacted similarly and one would would sigh and contemplate on the inconsiderent side of some people. The atmosphere there was also pretty light-hearted, from what I could tell.

But I have to admit your point of perceiving things does scare me a little.

I might as well just comment on this; Since im the author.

I don't mind people Posting rude replies. Those i can respond to.
But just "Talking" about it; I don't fancy at all.

1; Because i cannot reply something equally nasty if it's not written.

2; Because it doesn't really add anything to the topic; if it's not written.

3; Thirdly; I could say that my toon "Stood beside and listened", But that would be unrealistic; Since there's probably dussins of posters; And he can't be everwhere.

Now; What do i want to say by that?
It's simple - Think through what you're writing/saying/posting; And why. Because it may or may not result in OCC feelings getting hurt; And you may need to defend you statement.

ps- I am not offended. It's all goodwill!

No he didn't. He has internet problems and is returning when they're finished. Don't twist RL issues to strengthen your own case.

You need to learn how to separate IC from OOC. Period.

Many of us despise the fuzzy rp where everyone has to be nice. I can party with someone and still make snide comments, as svensk with his elf... I am not friendly however his elf gets snide comments thrown his way constantly.

If you're taking someone's IC actions personally, you have three choices as far as I can see:

1) Assume they're a twunt OOC and get bothered;
2) Send them a tell asking about it;
3) Assume they're RPing their character and have no personal OOC vendetta against yourself and continue on IC.

Number 1 seems arrogant IMO, as you just make assumptions straight off, so perhaps number 2 is better? I bring this up to address the following:

Quote:
so yeah.... If I see someone being a tool to me ICly and I don't hear anything from them OOCly, I have no room to assume anything different than the player is also a tool.

You could always talk to them, or could it be that if you share that opinion ... so may they?

As for personal preference, I always send OOC tells and party chat (since I played drow, and drow are mean), but when someone is being a jerk to me ICly I assume number 3 - they're being a jerk IC, without OOC malice.

Since I play a character very similar to Ron's Eary, and have been asked on several occasions....

To clarify - Caelianna, my character, is a complete and utter (censored). The joke 'Eary Clone' is quite literal. Anyone who knows her knows this fact, but, that is /Caeli's/ personality, not mine. She's a jerk, I'm not (though, like any human being, I have my moments).

I don't generally have Caeli leave 'notes' with nasty comments on the forums because she usually doesn't see the point. Chances are, it'll just get ripped down anyway, and to her, where's the fun in that? However, she can make her snarky remark and move on, amusing herself. That's just who she is. And in game, you're just as likely to get a snide or nasty remark from her directly as you are on the forums. Again, that's /her/ personality, not mine.

Like Tormak said - just learn to separate IC from OOC. Unless you're aware of some OOC issue with you from the player, take it as IC or check with the person.

Ignore the player. There is no player. No actions IC have any standing on the player behind the character. The moment you start thinking such is the moment paranoia sets in.

Wheeew. Gonna have to take my time replying to this one.

Now, ultimately, this is an RP Server. And it's one where there is, intentionally, a rather large dispersion between In Character and Out Of Character, as maintained heavily by the Community here. I'd go so far as to say it's the thing Amia's player and DM base is most rigid about for the most part.

In Character and Out Of Character are completely seperated. Rude Players can play Nice Characters, Nice Players can play Rude Characters; ultimately it says nothing at all about the player.

Now, I play Amia for the conflict, for the constant challenges, and to see exactly what happens and how a character evolves based on the circumstances. Earylduil was a good experiment of this, because he is in most ways completely opposed to myself. Ultimately, well behaved, nice, generally yielding individuals don't get you into many challenges or conflict, doesn't spur anything. Wall Flowers, so to speak.

I know for a fact that I'm not, typically, a hate filled individual with an intense hatred of general society, trust issues, , a manipulative streak a mile long, unfathomable paranoia, complete lack of understanding of social tact, and sees the primary way of dealing with problems as violence - whether physical or emotional.

That 'ent me. That's how a simple character developed in response to things that happened to him, things that he did, and the results thereof. HE wasn't always like that, but situation pushed him to it, and in the spirit of keeping a character seperated from the player - I not once interfered with his actions. I let it play out logically - even if it made him turn into a rather hostile, untrusting, and otherwise 'bad' person.

Now, the Forums are Out Of Character - Excluding PC Notice Board and PC Stories. Things that occur in these forums are 100% IC. Ignorance there is going to be classified as IC Ignorance, mistakes made there are going to be classified as IC Mistakes. The means for correcting these mistakes and ignorance in an OOC Context is so fundamentally simple that most assume that any mistakes there are either intentional, or at least born of In Character.

Appropriately so, mind. This is a Role Play server, that has been skewing towards the heavier, more focused side of the scale. Unless it's denoted as OOC, it's IC. If someone pulls apart one of Earylduil's posts for being filled with errors, that's not my bad - that's Eary's, and someone else responding isn't them being OOC, it's their character responding to it in character.

Likewise, characters responding to things without posting is quite viable. At times it can be to demonstrate the character itself, sometimes it's to show a general response, and other times it can purely be indicative of common behaviours. Nothing OOC about it.

I honestly believe it to be an extremely simple concept that you seriously need to practice to survive on this server - as it is where the general server culture and community is aimed, and has been for the longest time. If you take IC Actions OOC constantly, you'll quickly find yourself frustrated, because most players don't take any Out Of Character into account when deciding how to have their characters react.

Now, in regards to Eary's epitome of cruelty on the forums, and his readiness to turn any (otherwise ignored in character) flaw into a public diatribe - that's part of his character. None of my other characters would do such a thing, because it isn't part of theirs. Eary is, at the core, a very hostile individual - and parties such as the Crimson Arcanists draw his ire quite heavily, to the point where he will go out of his way to find any minor nuance to exploit and damage them. Whether that be damaging their numbers through murder, damaging their morale through psychological assaults - or simply ruining their public image.

Eary's response was purely an In Character response to faults in an In Character poster. OOC Intent is never taken into account. If a poster is made saying "Your Character Sees This Poster", I am going to assume that my character sees that poster as it is presented. Filled with grammatical, spelling, and other errors - that said character will have a field day exploiting.

I'm not going to underline the 'whys', mind, as those are secret and something that likewise needs to be discovered IC. I don't trust people not to metagame, sadly.

The extreme short form of this, however, is this;

Out Of Character and In Character are 99.9% Seperate. That 0.1% being situations where Amia's small amount of rules that affect RP (PvP Rules, Twinking Rules, etc) come into play.

If you can't deal with that, my personal suggestion would be to find a server that has a different general communal approach to the matter. This isn't Second Life where you play yourself - it's an RP server where you play someone other than yourself.

There is an argument to be made that all IC actions do stem from an OOC source. Before anyone rips that one sentence out as a quote and responds to it, allow me to explain.

We as players do control our characters words and actions. A player with no grasp of the use of sarcasm isn't going to be able to play an incredibly sarcastic character. Just as someone who is an eternal optimist will find it hard to play a character who sees the glass as half empty or even just as half. This is to say that for every player that plays a character who is a d-bag, there is a small, tiny, minuscule corner of their personality that is capable of being a d-bag.

The chink in this arguments armor is rather simple, though. Imagination... pure, simple, wonderful imagination. Taking one small facet of yourself and amplifying it a hundred fold to make it a driving force of some imaginary personality.

I consider myself to be a rather empathetic and giving individual. This is not to say that I don't have a small part of me that is selfish and covetous. My own consciousness allows me to suppress these thoughts and allows me to only act on the thoughts that I wish to. But, the ability to tap into these thoughts and amplify them allows me to play characters who exhibit traits that most people in this world would find rather abhorrent.... cruelty, sociopathic behavior and manipulative social maneuvering to being in the forefront.

This does not mean that I am any of those negative things. Only that I can tap into them and amplify them. My character may chain you up and leave you in a dungeon to be tortured, starved and generally maltreated at her whim for days on end. That doesn't mean that I would steal the cookie off your lunch tray in school or make fun of you because of a speech impairment.

This is not to say that there aren't some real jerks out there that only play evil characters because it "allows" them to be jerks. It's just to say that they are a vast minority and thankfully, they don't tend to last very long on this server. I know that a bad apple can spoil the bunch, but in the case of this server, one bad apple can not be allowed to ruin what I feel is a driving force for conflict and thus further RP on this server.

I disagree that mistakes people make should be considered IC. I believe OoC, including my mental quirks, should stay there. I know that many people here, like me, have some form of dyslexia or dysgraphia. Many people here are not native English speakers. Some people just aren't the world's best typists.

No one ever RPs having a mental seizure when they run weirdly back and forth. No one RPs assault when they bump into someone because NWN detection is kooky. So why pick on me for something I cannot control, and have to deal with daily, when other mistakes are not counted in character? I get enough problems from it in real life, thank you. This is an out of character problem. Just...Leave it there.

If someone were to make fun of my spelling or missing words in character, I would honestly ignore it and I, OoCly, still consider it extremely bad form.
