In the four years of playing on Amia I have been asked on three occasions how to make an elf walk instead of run. Strangely, two of those instances were in the last week.

So, here's a little walk how to.
There are many different ways to make a character walk instead of run.

1) Click the "Detect Mode" ability, either in a quick slot, or from the radial menu.

This is by far the most used way by most of my characters as it means I can walk about with just clicking. Also, keeps at a walking pace when using WASD keys to move.

But what about elves? They are in auto-detect mode, even when running!
Well, here's how to solve that.

2) Holding down the shift key while clicking your destination.

This is how I operate when with a party, so that I can run simply by letting go of the key. However, this way is not compatible with moving usiing WASD keys. Even with shift, if you press W to move forward, you will still run.

Anymore? Why, of course.
3) holding the mouse buttond down close to your toon.

If you hold the mouse button down, your cursor becomes an arrow pointing roughly in the direction your character will move to. If the cursor is close enough to your character it will decrease in length and your character will walk instead. And when close enough to walk, the closer the cursor, the slower the walk animation, though, on occasion your toon will just repeatedly stop-start-stop-start due to a very minor bug. Nothing damaging.

My personal favourite for flavour.
4) Zoom in as close as you can to your toon, face the camera so you can see your destination over your character's shoulder, and click off into the distance. Zoom out and watch your character walk gently to the destination.

This is nice on straight long roads, say for example, the north-south path in Cordor: North/Northern Outskirts.

As a side note, some elves had got into the habit of using the Stealth Mode button as an alternative to the Detect Mode. This is fine, if your character is being stealthy, though sometimes it is rather disorientating, especially when their stealth is being applied OOC.

I have on numerous occasions been spoken to by a voice but had no idea which direction to face, as to my character, they were invisible. Another occasion was when I joined a group and they all seemed to be talking to someone that, from my perspective, wasn't there and wasn't in invisibility, either. So, I can only suggest not to use the stealth mode as an alternative, though, at the end of the day, it's entirely up to you.

I hope this clears some things up.

Cheers.

Addition:
5) Adding to the key map in control options, under "Drive Mode Forward".

You can map a key to walk forward instead of run. By default there is no key mapped to it, so must be done via the controls options in the game menu.

Useful for those that like to traverse using the keyboard!

You forgot the easiest way.

Change bind "Drive key forward" to Q, and hold it instead of W when moving around with keyboard commands. Tadaa! you're walking instead.

That one and the Shift click technique are the ones I normally use, probably because I'm used to WASD movement from other games.

Keys are way easier. Walk/Run forward and presto.

An, an extra one. Nice.

Though, personally I wouldn't apply it to Q, as that is what I use for side-stepping. Something I use, when a party of adventurers seem to be charging my way along the road into Cordor or wherever.

I mapped "walk foward" to my W key, and left and right to my A nd D, and backwards to my S.

Sidestep are <-- and -->

Mapped camera controls (pan up, down, left right) to Q and E.

Works great for me, and it's 1st person keymap friendly!

Regards,

Just walk around carrying something heavy, like a billion full plates. When it's time to run, you drop it like it's hot.

The best, most awesomest and of course my way, is to map "walk forward" to S and map "walk backwards" to X.

Oh, yes, I was going to put weight distribution in there too, but forgot.
I.E. Loading, unloading a golem torso into/out of a bag of holding to adjust speed. Not just walk, but slowly crawl.

That's a good idea. I will try that one.

I'm making an Epic Monk with boots of urgency who carries around blocks of granite, and when people chase him he drops them all and books it away at the speed of god.

From the Norwegian fairytale "The Ash Lad and the good helpers", I give you:

"(...) When they had sailed a bit farther, they came to a man hopping about on his one foot, and on the other he had seven hundredweights. The Ash Lad said: "What sort of fellow are you, and what's the good of hopping about on one foot, with seven hundred-weight on the other?" "I'm so fleet footed," he said, "that if I walked on both feet, I'd come to the end of the world in less than five minutes." Then he asked if he could come along on the ship. "If you want to come along, just climb in," said the Ash Lad. Yes that he'd like, and so he climbed up in the ship to join the Ash Lad and his companions. (...)"

You can pause if you use the Konami Code.

Well you could also do a President Skroob:

"The ship is too big. If I walk, the movie will be over."

You know, I heard a little rumor many many months ago, that using the WASD keys to walk causes more lag then simply clicking, because it sends constant signals to the server or something. Wonder if it's true.

That is extremely likely.

It's true, both in NWN1 and NWN2 but NWN1 is so streamlined for dialup that it literally doesn't matter.

I can imagine holding down the mouse button to walk/run also has the same issue, but I suppose as said by Tormak, it literally doesn't matter.
