I'm sorry if this has already been asked. I've read all of the job pages that I know of (following the Job System link on the left side of the website) and searching for answers on this board gives lots of irrelevant results (though I did pick out a few job threads that didn't answer my question).

I figured out from the documentation that some jobs are not meant to grant huge tangible rewards for completion but can be used for role play and adventuring. My character the Undead Hunter learned by asking around ICly that her mission would take her to a place where she would likely be horribly massacred by monsters that far outmatch her.

My questions: are some jobs designed with higher level characters in mind, and others for just anyone? When choosing a job for new characters, are there certain jobs to keep in mind that are best suited for them? I chose a job that my character would want to have, but is the job system designed for characters to eventually aspire to certain jobs and to start out with simpler jobs?

Jobs were made with one thing in mind really. Give your PC a "job" to help flesh them out. No more or less really. Some jobs do have things that you can sell at the end but it is all about using it to further your plot.

My one guy for example is a sheapard, weaver and textile merchant. His wool and weavings have been used over and over for RP reasons such as building projects and a banner made of his wares use to hang a banner in the old temple of Bane even.

Okay, I think I understand: my Undead Hunter can just identify herself as an Undead Hunter whether she does the missions or not. Later when she becomes powerful enough she can actually do the missions.

Nope.

If I recall correctly, the hunter-type missions' difficulty scale with the character's level. Though it might not scale intelligently... It probably just works on 4 brackets of difficulty: +1, +2, +3, & +4 loot areas.

If you're a low epic for example, you might be sent on a mission to Actand where most likely you wouldn't be able to survive. Or if you're 30, you get sent to Yuan-Ti's where it becomes too easy.

My advice is for you to party up and face whatever challenge you're assigned with. Have an adventure. :p

Edit: Just in case you haven't been to Actand or seen the Yuan-Ti's yet, they're both +4 areas/monsters (they drop +4 enchanted loots) but there's a huge gap in their difficulty.

Exactly and as for plot here are a few suggestions:

- Join the EO or Kohligen. They are both against undead and a hunter would go over well

- Give her a quest having to do with it in her MOs. Mabye like to purge the Cordor Crypt or the Mourn Manner (seek DM help)

- Get a rivalry going between her and the liches, dracoliches and vampires of the island

You get the idea but in short use it to grow your RP in some way.

I did try turning the job into an adventure last night, and it was a lot of fun. My party never found the right area, but we explored new places and had a great time. I ended up staying up until 4am, but it was worth it.

The thing is we had no idea how to find the specific area, and the area's name given was very vague. Would asking for DM support for such a thing be a good idea?

Might not be the best idea, but it could help spur a reason to explore.

By DM support I meant asking a DM to support the adventure and not reveal the answer.

How do you mean supporting the adventure?

Providing a bit more environmental interaction and response.

You can always poke us upstairs and check! Alternatively you can use your DC wand in your inventory on your party members and one of us will usually pop in to peek if we're not swamped. We're occasionally known to make things interesting ;)

Just meant a DM looking for some RP to observe/participate in. ^^

An an old server I used to play on. The DMs there would often surprise us with extra spawns, so that we'd be fighting hoardes of the things sometimes...on hunting type adventures. Was a great deal of fun if you knew how to deal with the various ways of survival (darkness, invis, HIPs, using doorways, fighting back to back, etc....to make life easier to survive) and people there, quickly learnt that if they're in party, you never knew what was likely going to spawn around the next bend, if a DM was on...hehe..

Or occassionally DMs would take possession of a Boss, get it to RP and interact with a verbal exchange before making it vulnerable again and then fightings the group as a DM controlled critter.

Khlyaria's done it once or twice here for me too. So there are DMs who do enjoy NPC participation and/or surprises during hunts to make it fun.

:D

Possessing monsters gets me yelled at in the party channel because I dared to throw in a change. I "Ruined the hunting". the initial reaction never fails to be OOC in party "Yeah, a DM possessed it. Figures."

So I stopped paying much attention to you mindless monster killers beyond a passing glance to make sure you're not being dirty stinking cheaters.

I'd yell at you for stepping down because of that :P

Seriously, reminds me of the time when my SD got ambushed by a group of DM spawned orcs.. not wanting to hips spam I got anilihated.

Cue to a party member popping in, turning into a dragon, and obliterating the orcs, subduing the orc chosen, who just wanted to eat me by the way, and making him give up his eapon with an intimidate roll.

Npow that was fun.

Or the time when I was hunting in the forest of despair, crowsterf spawned other enemies, enemies that had fireballs, and undead too!

Cue to my druid wondering if the two wizards, of whom once said he was a necromancer, had to do anything with the later.
Fun Rp times, especially since the talk turned to how summoning works. *nod nod*

I have no problem with DM involvement of any kind. RP is more important to me than fighting (though I like to fight too), but sometimes I end up joining people who won't RP at all and it gets boring.

She's not joking. One time the temple of Lathander like aged and melted away around us when we were in the middle of something else completely. Holy crap that was a trip and a half
