Maryn wrote: I don't think that argument really holds up in this day Xavi, no offense. :) How many of our players never never download anything off the internet? I'm confident in saying that it will be a strong minority. I'm pretty sure that in the end, people will take chances of trying new things when they have to. Otherwise, they won't. Haks are easy, are good, and are commonplace on other thriving, healthy, nwn server communities. I don't think we are at risk of losing people, rather, stand to gain people who have shunned because of our lack of haks. Agreed. Not to mention that most HDs today have more than 100+ gb. Very, very few people will have an HD size too low to hold some haks. ticket wrote: Is there a hak that could extend what a server could do to classes, feats, and spells?
Something like a one time hak that would give the dev team more control and creativity to be able to create and modify any classes, feats, spells, etc.? Something that whatever X or Y idea we come up with will be possible without saying, "not possible, it's hard coded, or we'll need a new hak"?
Dual-wield whips! Spear + Shield combo without need for a costly widget!
That would be awesome if possible to add.
I do not remember what was my stance in the past concerning haks. Now, I would love to have it.
I have a worry, though.
Some overrides of the thread we have in the forums and that I downloaded, slowed down my computer ~greatly~ when I used them. I could barely run NWN in low graphic mode. It was so slow that if the changes were permanent, I would have stopped playing.
Is there a possibility of the same "slow down" happening with the haks?

I'm slightly lazy to search the last thread about haks but I do remember that Project Q was brought up and shot down for some reason.
If we're adding haks I think we should look over what project Q has and pick it apart for Amia's own hak pack. They have some very very sexy stuffs.
P.S. Can't wait until tormak gets here and see his reaction. He always said he'll fight haks to the death.

And you know what, I'm gonna say it. Stop using the "I don't want HAKs because new people may not join." excuse. It's a load of bull. You don't want haks because you don't want haks. No other excuse. It has nothing to do with new players, espically given most online games these days require around 100MB's of download to play online. It's only because YOU don't want Haks.
Don't hide behind statistics that have been pulled out of thin air either. There is no way to know that new players aren't willing to download stuff to come on the server. Your no longer new, so you can't suggest that old statistics are still relevent.
Stop hiding behind stuff and front up. People WANT haks for themselves, people DON'T want haks for themselves. It's purely selfish on both sides. I don't mean to sound like an ass, but I get pretty damned fed up with people around here not stating exactly what's the case, and instead hiding behind thousands of other reasons.
After all, you've had your bloody stagnent limited Amia for five years now, it's time for a change
Was referring to that, which is outright unnecessary. Even if you did get sniped before that. Eye for Eye, etcetera.

It was not shot down.
I think that it was put aside because Disco did not know how to use it or some such.

There are some CEP NPC models that would work well:
Purple Worm
Glabrezu
Gelugon
Aboleth
Chimera
Gives more variety to monster models

man, sorry if I didn't read it all, but is the Hak already working and I need to download it before going back to Amia?
Is there a full package that I can download or I need to download bit by bit?
Yeah, you can tell me to scroll back if you want...

Also I will continue to fight against changes to feats, skills, new prcs and etc. No need to add that. It is bad enough there are haks, no need to muck up the game's delicate balance as well.

Some of that stuff looks good. As with HAKs usually, there is a lot of garbage too. I hope you will pick and choose very conservatively what is being added and what isn't... because if this place turns into another inventory-rainbow-fest then I'ma weep.

My gut instinct is:
50MB HAK is okay, please don't make me download 300MB Hakpacks though...
The more you add, the more can go wrong. Safe things only, a bit at a time...
There, I said it.

He has the right to ask that, and I should be able to answer it. In this case it's a very simple answer: I know from first hand how limited the options are now and I really like to upgrade the Job System with decent herb, metal, gem, etc icons. There's no potion combi I haven't used, the assortment of rings and amulets is... well, sucks. These are things that will be used.
That said, I think I could strip the pack somewhat.

id prefer smaller over larger...
but as with all things, id prefer longterm functionality over temporary convience. I'd FAR rather one big hak at the start with extra stuff that doesnt get used, to a hak that gets expanded on every few months because it was too small at the start to accomplish everything the disco wanted.

I voted the last option, because, in all honesty, Disco and co do a great job of keeping this server running smoothly and well. I trust them to do what is best.
I'm honestly not fussed either way this goes. But I have been getting a bit of a stagnant feel with the engine, and this being the only server I play, it makes me want to play less.

There's a very simple reason not to use these and that that we allow rebuilding. The engine won't know what to remove when lowering levels.

I seem to recall you being that way, too ,Nekhy? Something about "no haks or I go bye bye". You changed your mind quite quickly in 24 hours?

My current computer cannot handle haks, at least none of the ones I tested when this was last discussed. Before that test I was 100% neutral on the matter of haks, and even after the test I remained mostly neutral. The "no haks or I go bye bye" is not a threat like you make it sound there, but a possibility. It's more of a "if we hak, there's a chance I won't be able to continue, if my PC cannot handle the haks", like I in fact said in the previous topic.
So I've not really changed my mind on this matter for a few years now, but I've been slipping a bit on each side of neutrality, depending on personal experiences with haks. Couldn't say a lot of the rest, how haks will affect us as a server. I have my own guesses how it'll affect us, but I'd rather see and make conclusions after, instead of basing decisions on pure guesswork.
But now I got a new PC in the making, so it may be that I don't need to worry about haks myself any longer.

Numba' 4. The chicken and his minion/s know what they're doing, and I see no reason not to trust them. As for whether or not having HAKs may deter new players (if they still exist) I don't really care. No really, I don't. I don't say that because I don't want new players, but if people can't be arsed to download 50MB, hell even 100-200MB data for an online game, they're not prepared for any online gaming world. Either that, or they're simply being stubborn and refusing to follow any sort of progress, just for the sake of being stubborn. In either case, I don't think we should let them decide Amia's fate.
I approve. Whole heartedly. Now give Disco and Terra (and others. Are there others?) their christmas present.

That there is the kind of attitude that destroys servers. It is the kind that if haks are put in and the player base starts to decline it will be defended till its fall. I am not certain it will fail mind you, or that it will be a success for the server, however, I have seen this kind of thing happen to other servers. Where change is always looked at as good and even when it doesn’t work it keeps being so defended by the few that can not admit a mistake that if it does fail it will be clung to till the bitter end. It is what had happened to what used to be a greet server, three kingdoms. Not from a hak but from changes they started to make away from their core ideas of the serves beginning, after those changes players was complaining and suggesting and said they didn’t like it. What did the DMs say? This is how we want it so deal with it… where is three kingdoms now? All but dead.
Please do not have that attitude that if you like it then it doesn’t matter what anyone else likes or dislikes. Change is needed indeed but not all changes are good, some are bad and I sure hope that if this turns out bad it will be recognized as such and changed back instead of held onto just for the sake of the so called progress. If it turns out to be good and help the server grow then cheers.
Personally I think some changes could be made to help the server without haks, the improving Amia thread as well as some threads here have many great suggestions by the player base that could be tried out, if those do not work its allot easier to change back then it is to change back from a hak.

You do have a valid point there.
If it turns out to be something we're loosing players for, Maybe we should have the option to change it back. I like that.
I also believe that this is up to the DM's, They're sort of our 'elected' politicans.
I try to understand the whole 'scripting' but i dont, hence i turn the responsibility over to the DM's to Choose for me.

Anything you need Disco. I don't mind the size of the Hak and I am certain you will be reasonable about the size and the quality of the hak you will bring to the server.

I say bring it on if that's what the player's and DM's/Admins want. But, fair warning, be prepared to hold my hand through the entire process. As I've said when this was mentioned before, I had a hell of a time downloading and installing the head pack. A lot of folks seem to make assumptions that everyone is as tech savvy as they. But more often than is admitted that is just not the case. New and pretty things are certainly a fun idea, and I'm looking forward to it. Just be ready to be patient and overly willing to help folks like me.

If number of players is going to decline, it's not going to take months. It will take days after the HAKs are implemented. That is when you'll see whether most of the playerbase is willing to download and install them to keep playing.
So yes, going back to HAKless in the event of a catastrophe is an option, and getting people all wound up about a decline that might or might not happen is not productive. Nobody is going to be oblivious to a drop in numbers, not while the forums have a player count right over on the left there.
But one thing that is going to be needed is some polls on how the new content looks when it comes. Otherwise yes, it is possible for off-putting things to go unnoticed.

Mind that I appealed to the server's populace directly. This is not a DM decision forced on you. I literally asked you as a group, including the DM's, designers, the old/new/drunk, for permission to do this, and an overwhelming majority says yes. That's something you seem to forget. The attitude IS the server.
That said, if it goes wrong I will try to remedy the situation. I want more people here, not (a lot) less. However, we can't even explain why we lost about 1/3rd of the server halfway August, so I guess a correlation between HAK and player loss will be tempting but slippery.

Do you have figures from last December? I am sure that the holiday season must have some background effect on numbers regardless. People will get new games for their Xboxes, spend time with family, go away on holidays, etc etc. It would be good, I think, to have some kind of background expectation if you are going to implement this change around that time.
Oh, and thanks for the links to the robes, Disco.

If simple overrides slowed my computer almost to a stop, is there some guarantee that it will not happen with haks?

As the first post states, and as has been stated later: Disco will provide a test module with the HAK before implementing it, so make sure it will not cause unsolvable problems to players.
The first stage is to see if the players are happy to have quality HAKs in principle, and to pick the contents. The second stage is to see if we can make it work for everyone. It's never too late to back down, if it's a disaster.

What if it does not work for a minority? Say.. 3 or 4 players?
I am not certain if Disco will want to revert the whole process for the sake of 3-4 players.
That is my worry.

Well, that remains to be seen. It makes no difference, though: if we decided to go with it even after three players evidently couldn't run it, we would decide to go with it under the assumption that such might happen, too. That is to say, it's rather pointless to worry in advance.

We have some good guesses, though. Lotsa people going to school and college at a certain week, the previous week having been an all-time high in hours spent on Amia. The drop really happened in one week, and nothing unusual happened during the all-time peak week. Except it being the peak week when both servers were full at the same time.
Now those people are apparently slowly coming back, looking at the numbers...

There are players who have technical problems with NWN that aren't related to Amia, and we help them all the time. Not going to be a problem helping a minority who have problems with hakpacks.

I have a question. Just how many changes to this server over the years have NOT been debated and deliberated by the DM and design staff?
That being said, I don't see this as something that will be total destruction for the server. As with every change made, some will rejoice, and some will cry. The ones who cry will be hear from a greater distance, it's human nature to have the negative outweigh the positive.
The one thing that I've noticed in this whole thread is that it's being equated to the "This is going to ruin the server" syndrome trend that is running rampant now.
Whatever the reason, change is a natural cycle, and the player base represents that cycle on a yearly basis. During summer months, players typically spend more time in RL, hence a drop in players for a time. Going to the beach does not mean that everyone is disgusted with Amia. Problems in having to deal with as diverse crowd of people on an online enviroment will always cause conflict. But that wont be the end all of reasons people leave a server either.
In the end, I think the staff here has had a long record of generally good changes and modifications to the server and it's enviroment. Allowing the players to continue to breathe life into their own collections of photons and this mass fantasy that is Amia.
I'm not saying that they do everything right, that whole pickpocket thing is evidence of that, but the staff does take the time and consideration before making changes. I think it should be taken into account before jumping in with a general 'Hell No' responce.
This is everyones chance to participate in making sure that the most people are satisfied with any future changes. Take it, rather than kicking it to the curb.
