To expand on Tormak's point - if you don't play a character for a certain length of time (two months I believe it is) they get archived. You can retrieve them using the new chat functions, I believe (you used to at the character maintenance).

They're archived based on the date they were last saved on.

I wonder if the archival function is working properly actually. I just had a FULL VAULT archival happen in one shot, except for my currently used character. Thing is, there were test pc's that were used once ever, various attempots at the current pc, meaning they had stopped ever being logged in at various stages. I was actually starting to wonder *when* they were going to start archiving, as it felt like it had been more than long enough.
Then suddenly, on both my accounts, all my not-currently-active characters vanished at the same time. That's not right, no question. They all would've had differing dates of last login, *especially* across the two accounts.
Was thinking of posting something, but really didn't care much since I wanted the inactives gone anyway. But with someone else mentioning the same thing, I figured I should reinforce that there's something odd.

Same here. It happened when the server was down for the count. When it came back up, Everything was archived save for my current builds of all my characters. Which is nice, don't get me wrong, but I'm just sayin'.

Hmm, happened to all mine at once too, after the last crash.

Are you certain you simply didn't do the monthly login-save-logout routine at the same day for the characters and then forget it for a good while? Because that's what I do and then all my characters always get archived at the same time. Minus the ones I really did login afterwards.

I am very sure. I'm also fairly confident that some of the older ones hadn't been played in more than two months, but all of them disappeared simultaneously, and the last I used them were definitely not on the same day.

There was nothing wrong in that I lost active characters, it just seems a bit of a coincidence that all of them disappear at once the day after a crash for more than one person is all.

Could also be that like a virus scan the archive won't touch your account if it's active at the time it runs. So as a result, even characters that have not been used in some time will remain until you're not logged in when the archiver next runs.

Well, it did happen to me too, the other day. Might be Mag's stuff, as Disco said. Or it could be coincidence; doesn't matter either way.

All good if you find your characters in the archive vault I suppose.
"/s f_file show archive" to confirm.

Bless you for that. I've been waiting for that moment since I've arrived on Amia and have made a dozen of broken characters.

In case anyone missed the post by Mags in announcements on this: Mags says that archiving will now happen on Sundays, of any character that hasn't been played in 2 months.
I'd link...but I'm lazy.
