Knowing about Eilistraee is essential to playing a (decent, lore-abiding) Eilistraeen.

Hum alright.. I'll throw down my two cents on how -I've- been playing Eilistraeean. (Which isn't necessarily the "right" way to do it)
1. Don't run around and bitch about people not accepting you, simply because you follow a good god(ess). Instead try to work in Eilistraeean dogma into your replies or behavior. Like accepting that not everyone wants you up there.
2. Try to avoid snapping back at people, if they snap at you. This one is probably the biggest reason that most elven chars attack drow. In my experience if you "repay rudeness with kindness", especially in those situations, you'll come out on top.
3. Do small things that most will probably not notice, but that work like a "trademark" of Eilistraee. Like having some snacks on hand, and offering them to random adventurers. I found doing that often lead to several hours of RP with semi-large groups around a fire. (mind you, most didn't stay for more than 15-30 mins, since they were running to hunting grounds. But once three people are around a place and talking, people get drawn to it, like moth to a light)
4. Not everyone's perfect. Can be great fun sometimes, to have your char forsake repaying rudeness with kindness or not judgeing, if say.. they've had a bad experience with those people, just a random grudge against a race or "type" and so on. Can also generate some Eilistareean RP, with discussions on the norms and so on.
The above, along with trying to keep Eilistraeean dogma and such in the back of my head, is what I've been trying to do when playing my Eilistraeean. And I've had a blast with it.
My first hunting run, my char got pushed around by a pack of Elves, and treated like most drow. With the exception that they didn't kill him on sight, and rather used him as a distraction and decoy for the monsters to chase. GREAT FUN.
Other random situations, or simply playing an Eilistraeean have lead to other types of fun too. Like disliked by groups who do constant evils, or don't hate slavery. Actually ending up accepted or tolerated by the "radical" sun-elves, because my char turned out to be an Eilistraeean in more than just "words" and so on.
All in all, I've had great fun playing one, and I hope whoever makes one, will have too.

I really wish more Eilis would get their arses kicked in line for snapping at non-drows and non-Eilis. Well, they should get their arses kicked for about anything, just for the sake of getting their arses kicked.
Just because we have a shrine of Eilistraee and a very strong good-aligned drow culture on Amia, and just because it's perfectly kosher lore-wise... doesn't mean there should be any more tolerance towards drow. They should be the underdogs fighting for acceptance, but that fight should ultimately be mostly in vain. It's also quite lore-kosher that there's people who accept the Eili drow, and defend them... but those people should be the ones who actually know these drow personally. It's quite silly for someone the drow never met before to have full trust in the drow, even if they say they're Eilistraeen. It's quite silly for a friend of Eilistraeens to trust any drow they didn't meet before, just because the drow says they're Eilistraeen.
I guess it's a natural thing for players of non-drow characters to have their characters be nice back to drow who do good deeds ICly and and turn the other cheek and beg for acceptance. It's quite humane, but also quite wrong for the sake of the game. But fear not, the goodie drow players won't get sad for getting kicked around (at least if they know what they're doing). The chances are, they're in it for playing the melancholic, despised underdog which goodie drow are in canon lore.
That's my two cents as a player with two Eilistraeen drow (not that I've had a lot of time to play them lately, due to playing another character, but they've been my main characters in the past).

I have to agree with Nekh.
The outright acceptance is somewhat ...well honestly, boring.
I had great fun when I had to work hard for the trust of various chars.
That RP sort of gets ...lost. When fifty random adventurers waves cheerfully at you.
Eilistraeeans not having to work for acceptance, would be like.. Banites, not wearing black, green and spikey armor. It's just unnatural.

Cutting on Numbers before the topic go into personals...
I play an Eilistraee drow female that is a Priestess wannabe and she is quite afraid to leave the shrine alone. I think she should be, unable to defend herself and in a complete hazardous environment. She is certain to carry all she can that would make her look like an Eilistraee, her necklace with the Dark Maiden Symbol, her bastard sword, her blue and silver armor and a clasp on her cloak with the temporary insignia given by the shrine, indicating her residence. I give the entire description every time I meet anyone outside the shrine, I know it doesn't mean they would believe, but at least they would hold their hand and question her.
I play her as I read the dogma of the religion, she is learning to play instrument, to cook game and to dance. She is learning all the rituals of her religion. She offers help and support to those around her and up to now, she never had to strike anyone...
Now, Delarwyn is an Eilistraeen Half Elf with sons and daughter, from her and adopted that are at least partly drow. She was the lover of a Drow for two years more than Reh'Cra is old, so not really sure how long it makes, I think two decades or almost there. She doesn't accept well insults against the surface drow. She knows it is expected and all, but her love for her children and even for her former lover makes her blood boil with the injustice of packing everyone up inside the same package.
Del isn't musical, but she dances. She is excellent hunt, cook and love the gathering and sharing of food. More than anything, she tries to bring all lost drow, all evil drow into a better way of life that she judges to be the way of the Shrine. She wouldn't attack people, but she wouldn't side against a drow easily and she would try to protect a drow that she hopes to "save".
They both approach Eilistraee in different ways. But, are devotes, one a Priestess to be, the another a worshiper. I don't know if I play them right, but it is the way it is. Up to now, Del only got in trouble with the elves and other against drow people. She doesn't hold against them, but she won't change either.
I think that we have a rule of thumb to follow, but we are all individuals and we should put individuality on our characters, conflicts and desires that are their own. We cannot all play Eilistraeen the same because it is how it supposes to be played. But, we also need to be prepared for the IC consequences of our actions. For example, be banned from a place, like Del was from Winya that was her home. Lose someone she loves because the person has fallen deeply and know there was nothing she could do about it but to watch and hurt. But, I vote for following the guideline and put a spin on whatever you do so it will be interesting to all and not a block of repetitive rp.

* I would also note, just because Eilistraeen drows do get to dance about naked for a traditional sake, does not invite cybersex! So don't join the bandwagon if you're trying to be frisky. Leave that for the Lovitarian weirdos.

Personally, I don't think just having 'beauty' under the belt is a good enough reason. Compare her dogma to the dogmas of the other religions. It stands out like a technicolor thumb. Maybe if Eilistraee wanted all her female followers to 'show love' to anyone they're converting it'd work. But no. She even proclaims swift violence against those who offer violence first. It doesn't fit. /my opinion.
QFE.
Beauty is apart of her portfolio, but not in the sense (in my opinion,) of the rest of the goddesses inside the temple. She doesn't belong in the Temple of Love in my view either.
Anyway. Digression. Good information, Jud. This woulda been useful a few years ago when there were far more Eilistraeens.

Well, there are Idols there that I don't even know... I am not sure why she ended up there, but maybe beauty, dancing, freedom of body expression, singing, bringing joy to others, share food, welcome the enemies and only acting in violence as a last source could bring her to the pantheon of love.
I don't think the temple of love is about carnal love as it was in the time of Sharess only. I think now, it is about all types of love. Love being the celebration of what bring humans, drow, elves, dwarves and whatever together. Love that brings people together to celebrate in happiness. Love that save the heart of all drow from darkness and Lolth. I don't believe in redemption without Love and I see all Eilistraeen that wasn't born as Eilistraeen as redeemed.
If Nassy is right and she is Jesus of Faerun (Even though I always saw as being Ilmater), Jesus is about Love. Love the other as you love yourself. Love your brother, your father, your mother, your wife and husband, your children, your enemy and friends, love them all because it is thru love that one reach heaven.
I think what happens is that people are still connected with the love offered by Sharess, but in the way I see it, a Temple of Love is just beautiful, it is just so much more, so inclusive.
I think that there are different ways to see the same thing. I see the Temple of Love as Universal Love, As the many expressions of love. Eilistraee most definitely fits in the category of a Goddess that brings Love to people. Her dogma is about freeing the drow from the darkness of Lolth, why would she do that if she didn't love the Drow?
Well, I may be something that Yossarin called Del yesterday, someone that sees everything as possible and I may have a too ample view of everything. Maybe it is because of this way of seeing things that I miss the details that wouldn't make Eilistraee a Goddess that is loving and that brings love. Yes, she may even bring revenge, and a swift sword on your head, but it isn't what she is about if she can avoid it.

Well, Eilistraee fits in just as much, if not more than Lliira or Sheela Peryroyl, to be fair. Not to mention, the Bast aspect of Sharress, which really has nothing to do with love, lust or anything like that and more to do with war and defense. Also, that Amia specific aspect of Sharress which is pretty much Nobanion, almost to the T. So, given that those gods are included, I'd say she fits it pretty damn well. ::shrug::
But anyway... I'll think up some things to add to this.
Well, the content of the first post will migrate to R&L in time, anyway, so it doesn't matter if the discussion rails off a bit. At least it keeps the topic at the top of the forum!
Except that Eilistraee is a Drow god and we know how much Cordor likes Drow.
However, Cordor have signet rings for good drow. So, if they are allowed in, they can also worship. Besides, the temple is in the outskirts of the city.
I think he more means that the general populace of Cordor would be uncomfortable with the drow presence, as they should be.

aahh, that is true. But, dang, Cordor populace should already be used to strange creatures. They are dealing with drow, half orcs, kobolds, maybe even full orcs (not sure about this one), draconic people with wings flying around. I think the Cordor populace should have the strongest back bone in Amia.
I would even bet they all have some type of weapon at their hands and pray for protection every night before they go to sleep. They are the most exposed people of all the island.
Oh, they won't trust the drow, they won't trust any of the strange creatures, but that would stop there.
Unless there is an attack in Cordor by a drow party to increase the fear and make the populace request for protection. I don't see how having drow talking in the city and drow worshiping inside a building would change things.

Especially considering they put up with kobolds, and there's a kobold lair right outside that keeps raiding the farms. Ditto with goblins who try to kill anyone that heads north.

Putting up with is one thing, welcoming with open arms blindly's another.
The Eilistraeen Shrine in Cordor was put in as a result of Xavi's decisions as she built the temple of love. There are plenty of mechanics therein if you want it removed.
Well, if we have a sufficient numbers of players that want it removed, I say go for it. Maybe the Shrine could make a request? Maybe the population could vandalize the place? Maybe the population could write to the Government and say what in hell?
But, honestly, I don't see why we would do it. I don't see how it can be worse than welcoming all type of violent and strange creatures into their theaters, restaurants, commerce, and now even rental homes. For God's sake all types of monsters can rent a house in Cordor and all the cities for that matter.
So, we can see, hey come and buy my products my dear murderous red dragon kin that barely can hold your temper. Oh, come and sit to eat my food and be served by my daughter, my might half orc that may have just split someone's head when I was not looking. Oh, please share your space with me in the theater my might ugly looking half orc, half dragon, part drow.
But, no we cannot accept, in any way possible, a peaceful Goddess idol in the farmlands. It is just unacceptable..
Maybe it is because there is no gold coming from worshiping? ummmm, yes, maybe we should charge to enter the temple, it would make alright, since the commerce town accepts anyone with Gold. Ah, yes, tolerate, of course.. That is why there are so many of them around and nothing was ever done to stop it?
Oh, yes we had a ban against all creatures and monsters, but what happened to it? The populace voted they could stay. Interesting.... very interesting... and yes, after a drow raid in south cordor, they were all still allowed in.
I am being a bit sarcastic, but dang, after "tolerating" so much for so long, what is an idol inside a temple, that the farmers would probably avoid (well, but for the single women in search of protection and help with love and such, thinking like an Aphrodite type of temple here) because they are worried about crops, hardship, providing food and shelter for their familes and not with love.
The relationship between Cordor and the Eilistraeean shrine and drow in general has been stated a few times on the forums and several times through the mouths of NPCs in-game. It is common knowledge.
The drow, as a race, have always been a blight on the surface. For the longest time, Cordor was the "City of Tolerance" and looked the other way when it came to drow coming in. The citizens, the people who actually lived there, did not like it, but they understood it from the perspective it was explained to them: good drow do exist, and they spend money in our city. This was the rationalization provided by the former Duke. Nonetheless, Lolthlite drow PCs freely roamed Cordor and very, very consistently committed grevious acts. Naturally.
Then an incident occurred between former Lieutenant Galverson and a single drow woman who refused to remove her helm at a checkpoint. She was arrested for her refusal, and the Amian Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) supported her in a civil case against Galverson. The very public case drew out a lot of animosity from amongst the populace, but it was ultimately the PCs who determined the outcome with a single petition that had overwhelming support: ban drow.
It is assumed that the Duke could not ignore that. He stepped in, exonerated Galverson, and then passed the petition into law - with one proviso: the existing ban is on Lolthlites specifically, not upon drow. It was a nod given to the Eilistraeean Shrine after their ranks pleaded ceaselessly with the government to be given some credit for their efforts at rehabilitating. It was worked out that the Eilistraeean Shrine would provide Signet Rings to reformed drow, and that any drow entering Cordor would be asked to show one. Not a flawless system if a Lolthlite gets a hold of a Signet Ring, of course.
If the Eilistraeean Shrine did not exist on Amia, and if it were not a PC faction that insistently imposed itself on the Cordorian government at that critical juncture in its decision-making process, you probably would have seen Cordor go no drow, period.
But the Duke is gone, and you have a very different government now. In fact, you seem to have a very different people, too...and, as Delarwyn says, they finally do have a backbone.
Unfortunately, they also have a long memory, and they remember the terrible things drow have done to them. And goblins. And kobolds. And tieflings. And dragonkin.
And adventurers.
The Shrine to Eilistraee in the Temple is tolerated purely on Xaviera's merit as a true-blue Citizen of the Commonwealth, something she earned through roleplay. But there's always the chance things could easily go south.
Go read the title. And talking about Cordor government policy toward drow, has nothing to do with playing an Eilistraeean. This has been a public service annoucement sponsored by Sesame Street. Todays Letter is 'S'

Pulled from the web as I'm at work: "Eilistraee is a lover of beauty and peace... Encourage happiness everywhere. Learn and teach new songs [and] dances.... Promote harmony between the races... They nurture beauty, music, the craft of making musical instruments, and song wherever they find it"
As pointed out above, Eilistraee is a goddess of happiness, beauty, song and dance, as is Lliira. Although Xaviera's own teachings promote Lliira as a goddess of love, this is not technically true - Lliira is included in the Temple because
a) Xavi believes that happiness and joy are essential to true love,
b) because Lliira shares the plane of Brightwater with Sune & Sharess (along with Tymora and perhaps Waukeen).
Eilistraee is included because of similarities in her portfolio to that of Lliira and because she is in effect the sister-in-law of Sharess via Zandilar who bore Selvetarm to Vhaeraun. Xavi also has other personal reasons for including Eilistraee in the Temple.
I will have Sheyanna removed as she's not an FR goddess and so shouldnt be there, but Xavi does have the Council's permission to have an idol of Eilistraee in the temple. I was expecting some conflict about the goddesses, but honestly not about Eilistraee.
Lorewise, I think she's at least as appropriate as Lliira. I would be more than happy to address any further objections IC through RP.

It's rather pointless to discuss theology OOC; if a PC believes she is fitting, then a PC believes she is fitting and acts on it.

There are a lot of nice tidbits that have been stated, mostly by Gers and Grave, but I feel that before I give my two cents I should say this:
Most of what has been said here and what I'm going to say should be taken with a grain of salt. It's simply here to inspire and help you along. For example, just because most Eilistraeens try to be nice, doesn't mean they all are and just because most Eilistraeen enjoy/don't mind being nude doesn't mean they all love, embrace and practice nudity at every waking moment, if at all.
1. One would think many Eilistraeen, especially newly converted Eilistraeen, would exercise caution when meeting new people, especially non-Eilistraeen. It doesn't have to be obvious, but I think it's a logical and natural response for an Eilistraeen. In particular, Drow Eilistraeen since their race is hated by most and feared by even more. Not to mention, the Eilistraeen faith is treated with great suspicion by many people. Some think it's simply a front and that they're Lolthites trying to take over the surface.
2. Continuing with the previous thought, I too think many Eilistraeen Drow, if not most, would logically take great caution when first meeting/encountering each other. They know all too well what their race is capable of and I doubt many would be so quick to trust one another. I dare say that I would think most Eilistraeen Drow would be more cautious in meeting other Drow than a Human or Elf.
3. If you're converting from Lothite society to Eilistraeen society, think about how slow or fast certain aspects of life would change for your PC. For example, after years of speaking down to males or being spoken down to by females, would your PC so easily trust the other gender? How intense was the hate before? How strong is it now? How long would it probably take to really get over it, if ever? This can even apply to the other evil Drow deity faithfuls who are switching to Eilistraeen faith. Really think about how slowly and how quickly certain ways they're used to will change. Old habits die hard. Especially for one of Elven bloodlines (yes, that means Drow too).
4. Personally, I like to give my Eilistraeen PC a touch of gloominess, being that she was a former Lolthite. I imagine my PC mourns all the loss, death, hate and evil that she has suffered and caused in her live. So ask yourself: Would your converted Eilistraeen be haunted by past wrongs s/he did? Would your converted Eilistraeen be haunted by other horrible memories of losing family, friend or love? Also, think about the daily dangers of Eilistraeen life. Would that effect your Eilistraeen in a sorrowful way from time to time?
5. An Eilistraeen would probably have a very different response to evil actions done by others, depending on what was done. What I mean by that is, for example, take a Lolthite male who is seen trying to kill a human female in the forest. Although for most goodly creatures with guts, their reaction is to spring in to action, a Lathandrite might be thinking "Damned beast, I'll cut you down" yatta yatta, while an Eilistraeen might be thinking "Damn it! Don't make me have to kill you" yatta yatta. Perhaps it might effect how a situation like this is approached, but I would think it would very likely be thought of very differently at the very least by an Eilistraeen. There would probably be a sense of pitty, sorrow and/or understanding on the Eilistraeens part because most of them have been on the other side of the fence, as it were.
Anyway, like I said, take it with a grain of salt. It's simply food for thought.

I have to admit the post just made by Guns as well as RP of late in general with the Eilistraeens makes me pause for thought when it comes to playing Warrick.
At some point, if ever i have the room mentally or psychologically, I ought to make a Drow either converting to Eilistraee, or an Eilistraeen but recently coming to the isle.
I have started the opposit..ive made a drow whos sole purpose is to exploit the good will people have towards drows on this server..and make the world burn for it

You definitely have good points. Im'kiira (my priestess) is and always has been a rare case, as she was never Lolthite, nor was she even born on Faerun, so she's always clashed slightly with the other converts. Nix, however, has a bit of an attitude. I would imagine switching from Lolth to Eilistraee doesn't automatically make you nice (I can think of a few examples). Kiira did, however, get a nice little slap in the face from Lolthite society, so her outlook has changed just a wee bit.

Yas'da isn't always nice. >.> She tries real hard, but there are those moments when she just wants to rip someone's face off and throw it at the gargantuan she-kats.
Vier'ynrae, on the other hand, was taken out of Lolthite society when she was still very young, and so she remembers the hard, trying times of living in Menzoberranzan, but most of her memories are filled with thoughts and images of a happier, more peaceful place and lifestyle. It's because of this particular mix, I think, that her respect for those who break away from Lolthite culture after so many years to embrace Eilistraee is so prominent.

That's how I was RPing Rizzen before my break. He simply cannot understand (yet!) a couple of things and he still has issues about the matriarchal way that Eilistraeens live.
When I get back playing, I will resume that RP.
At first, I thought about making him finally understand during the texts I have been writing, but everything is so much better when you are RPing with someone else who has a completely different IC/OOC view of things.
It is not fun to be fully in control of everything that is going on.

hehe.. I made my Eilistraee a case of being a black sheep among the Lolthite and almost being sacrificed by her own mother as unworthy. She had learned about Eilistraee and the hatred of the Lolthite made her escape her mother and her society in search of the Eilistraeens.
So, yeah, kind of different than most people play it, but it works alright I think.

I know I am going a bit Off Topic here but... does Eilistraee support Rangers?
EDIT: I could not find anything on Faiths & Pantheons, nor on the main post. It is probably obvious that she does not. Still, I wanted to be sure. >.<

Not per se, though I'd not find it unusual for many Eilistraeen to have ranger-like skills and perhaps even levels, given their enclaves tend to be in wilderness areas. As for their divine spells, those might be granted by a nature deity allied to Eilistraee, provided the ranger also pays homage to them. I seem to recall a few threads about UD drow druids from a while back, and I think the general consensus was that such a druid would get spells from Malar in most cases, who is an ally of Lloth. I'd think the same could apply to Eilistraeen, but with a different deity.
In actual canon lore though, I don't recall ever hearing of Eilistraee being able to directly grant druidic or ranger spells. If the ranger in question solely worships Eilistraee, I think they'd be without spells.
Joined: 17 Aug 2005 Location: Land of the Scorching Sun, Empowered by Global Warming
Mm... I guess I could do without spells. It would be a challenge.
Still, in this case, which nature deity could be considered allied to Eilistraee?
EDIT: Sheesh Gers. Things would be easier if you were on MSN. ^^;
EDIT 2: Nevermind. I was looking at the Elven Pantheon and found out that Fenmarel Mestarine actually has good relations with Eilistraee.

I thought it was generally agreed on Amia that rangers don't need a nature or ranger deity? Eilistraee alone would do you fine. Besides, even in lore it doesn't says rangers have to have a nature or ranger god to get their spells. It just makes sense that they at the very least have a patron, since the spells are indeed divine.

Huh, rangers aren't my specialty, to be honest. What book did you see it in that they don't need a deity? I thought they required one if they wanted to cast spells.
Indeed so. There's an Order of Mystran Rangers, the Order of the Shooting Star, and I'm pretty sure Mystra's not a Nature deity! So I can't imagine Eilistraee would turn them away.
