Given the number of people whom I’ve noticed making and playing Eilistraeen drow, I thought that I would do a write up on what I know about Eilistraeen RP. Keep in mind that this isn’t written in stone, but it should be used as a set of guidelines to use when creating and RPing an Eilistraeen drow. What isn’t explicitly stated anywhere in the sources I’ve mostly figured via inference, based upon Eilistraee’s philosophy as stated in the sources. It's my hope that people interested in playing a "goodie drow" will find this both enlightening and useful.

Eilistraee’s Dogma (c/o Demihuman Deities): Aid the weak, strong, grateful, and churlish alike; be always kind, save in battle with evil. Encourage happiness everywhere; lift hearts with kind words, jests, songs, and merriment. Learn how to cook game and how best to hunt it. Learn new songs, dances, and ways with weapons, and spices, and recipes, and pass this learning on whenever possible. Learn how to play, make, and repair musical instruments. Practice music and sword-work. Defend and aid all folk, promoting harmony between the races.

Strangers are your friends. The homeless must be given shelter from storms, under your own roof if need be. Repay rudeness with kindness. Repay violence with swift violence, that the fewest may be hurt and danger fast removed from the land. The faithful must aid drow who are in distress. If the distressed are fighting with other drow, the combat is to be stopped with as little bloodshed as possible. So long as the drow met with are not working evil on others, they are to be aided and given the message of Eilistraee: "A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of the Great Light. Come in peace, and live beneath the sun again, where trees and flowers grow."

Priests of the goddess are allowed to keep and accumulate money given them as offerings-with the understanding that this wealth is to be used to buy food, musical instruments, and other tools (such as good swords) to serve the will of the goddess. Priests of Eilistraee are allowed to go adventuring, so long as they feed, aid, and defend the needy along the way. They are encouraged to aid adventuring parties, with the price of their aid to be provision of some sort of beneficial magical armor they can use (or failing that, an enchanted sword of some sort).

Faithful of Eilistraee are encouraged to give food to others in need with a prayer to the goddess, to act with kindness, and to give food and money they can spare to their priests. Priests are to feed themselves by their own gardening and hunting skills as much as possible and to try to convert at least one stranger per moon to the worship of Eilistraee. Leading a convert in a prayer to the Dark Maiden is itself an offering to the goddess, who often manifests as a sign to the convert. When priests of the goddess must fight evil, they are to bum the bodies of the evil creatures they slay as an offering to the goddess-unless such creatures are edible and non-sentient, and there are hungry folk near.

Any hungry travelers met with, who offer no threats, are to be fed by the faithful of Eilistraee. While traveling, priests are to carry food with them for this purpose at all times. Where food cannot be purchased or received, it must be gathered or hunted for. Faithful of Eilistraee are to set aside food and give it as often as possible to strangers in need, particularly outcasts and those of other races. If food yet remains, it is to be given to the priests of Eilistraee, so that they may do the same, and none shall go hungry. In times of plenty, store food for lean times ahead. In harsh winters, patrol the lands about to find and take in the lost, the hurt, and those caught in the teeth of the cold.

Whenever possible, food should be eaten with the accompaniment of song. Except for properly sad occasions, a feast should be accompanied by merriment; the faithful of the Dark Maiden are commanded to promote happiness and gaiety whenever possible. When faithful and allies of a priest fall in battle, any priest present must, if possible, provide burial, a funeral song, and comfort to the bereaved.

Classes: Eilistraeen can be of practically any class, though the religion does not include paladins, BGs or druids. Eilistraeen monks are known, but very, very rare, though not prohibited from following the Dark Maiden. There are, however, no known formal Eilistraeen monk orders. Females tend to be clerics, bards, or champions, while males often tend to be warriors, mages, rogues, or bards. Eilistraeen, being followers of a goodly deity, despise undead as most other such religions do, so Pale Masters would be entirely unheard of amongst the religion unless they were actively trying to reverse their state. Male clerics of Eilistraee are exceedingly rare, but not unknown. Male clerics are required to have undergone a ritual known as the Changedance, which causes them to have spent at least 1 year as a female, before they’re formally accepted into the clergy. Bards are very common amongst the Eilistraeen, as the Dark Maiden encourages and promotes bardcraft. Weaponmaster is also a highly viable PrC, given the Eilistraeen emphasis on the art of the sword.

Races: Reformed drow make up the largest segment of Eilistraeen racial makeup, with half elves (both half surface and half drow) making up another large component. There’s a smattering of other races, such as humans, dwarves, half orcs, and hin. Often these non-elven followers are people who have been aided or rescued by the Eilistraeen, in many cases freed slaves.

General Attitude: Your typical Eilistraeen is fully aware of the cursed and reviled nature of their race. They also accept such, knowing that their ancestors (and often themselves) have done much to deserve the fear and hate their presence inspires. An Eilistraeen sees it as their duty to change people’s minds about their religion and fellows personally, through peaceful means while defending themselves if necessary. However, an Eilistraeen will also be quick to caution people about being overly accepting of drow they don’t know, lest they turn out to be a Llothite or follower of some other malign entity. Many drow who follow the Dark Maiden also possess a measure of pride in the fact that they have managed to throw off the shackles of Llothism. They usually won’t let this control them though, usually realizing that they are the exception, not the rule.

Eilistraeen also detest the institution of slavery, as does their goddess. Given they follow a goddess who emphasizes freedom from oppression, it should come as no surprise that they seek to free slaves whenever possible, especially when those holding them are evil drow or members of other malign Underdark races.

Some Eilistraeen are melancholy sorts, sometimes turning inward in sorrow over the evils they have committed in their past. One might play such converts as being amongst the most zealous followers, especially at converting other drow. On the other hand, they might also have little compunction about killing those who refuse to change, and continue on the path of Lloth or Vhaeraun. Others might focus more on spreading goodwill and happiness, as is part of the Eilistraeen dogma. Drow such as these tend to be musicians, dancers, and performers of all sorts. They’re also more likely to attempt contact with elven settlements, in the hope of bettering relations between the very distant races. Other Eilistraeen, as their goddess asks, might be more artists or warriors, teaching the arts of music and dance, or swordcraft and forging.

Religious Attitude: Eilistraeen are also often deeply religious, as are most drow. They may not show it on a constant basis, but followers of the Dark Maiden see their goddess as the savior of their race, or at least of themselves personally. They often create or perform works of music or dance to praise Eilistraee, or practice swordcraft to honor her. They see it as their holy duty to try and convert other drow, but are quite willing to defend others against their darker-hearted cousins if necessary. Few things may anger an Eilistraeen more than witnessing other drow performing evil on the surface, for it mires the drow more deeply in Lloth’s web, and for the fact it makes the Eilistraeen’s own work more difficult. Insults against the Dark Maiden by the ignorant will often be ignored, but from those who are known to know better often prompts a degree of cold anger from Eilistraeen, and sometimes bloodlust from newer converts.

Attitudes Towards Other Races: Most Eilistraeen are accepting of beings of different races, unless they actively commit evil. Being so reviled themselves, they can well understand the concept of the diamond in the rough, and are all too aware books shouldn’t be judged by their covers. This doesn’t mean they won’t immediately consider most creatures such as goblins, kobolds, gnolls, orcs, or ogres as evil, but that they might be more open to the idea of a rogue specimen of such races attempting to free itself from the typical behavior of it’s race.

Elves are a special case for most Eilistraeen. Given their religion focuses very heavily upon rapprochement with the elven races, most Eilistraeen will be especially careful not to kill or display hate towards surface elves. On the other hand, they also know most surface elves will try to skewer them on sight, so it’s not uncommon for an Eilistraeen to be ready to defend themselves if forced to. They will, however, almost always refrain from killing any elves, and often flee rather than fight if at all possible.

But mentioning it gets people to look into the topic. Though, for full effect, it should mention drow boobies.

I know of one Eilistraeen cleric who lacks boobies. But, Nekhy's right.

At least... Maybe now... Eilistraeens will actually BE Eilistraeens when RP'd by people who don't know squat about Eilistraee.

Yay!

... Is that really appropriate? If a player of an Eilistreaen isn't quite correct, that is all part of the IC learning, or it should be. Because that is a lot of information provided to take in and be "perfect" on right away.

This is a true statement. Religion in the -real- world is a constant learning experience. Fictional religions have even fewer teachers and sources. Cut people a break, eh?

Or bite me... Either or.

But srsly. It was appropriate - and I am saying that in the sense that: Yes, I understand people are entitled to their suitable notion of RP, and that will remain IC as an overriding principle not to be ignored, and yes, I understand that people's understandings of Eilistraee can grow and develop when creating a character that chooses the path of Eilistraee.

But my point is that at least now people have the information, available to them, on how to perform attitudes, ideologies, and contribute to the ever-growing Eilistraeen crowd pro-actively.

I don't care if people RP Eilistraeens the way the want that may not be lore-orientated... Just means that I won't tolerate them IC as much as I would if they did play them Lore-wise.

Trufax.

Good-aligned drow start at the Shrine. Neutral/Evil aligned can start in Ultrinnan or Underport. But, it's a simple thing to have a DM change your start point to Kampo's Storehouse, which is right outside the Shrine.

You cannot simply /create/ an Eilistraeen without DM approval in being born from someone who is already an Eilistraeen PC. You have to start out as a Drow. Escape from the Underdark (also a SCHEISSE server), and pursue that path.

You can't have teh cookiez if ya ain't got no teef!

*sighs* it is an important topic and you are spamming. It isn't easy to play an Eilistraeen and what Gers is expressing is quite a good guide. So, you spammers please give a break.

Now, the nudity for Eilstraeens is not a big deal, we are not expected to get naked every minute, but we are not ashamed to be naked either. Our bodies as everything in nature is a gift from the Gods and not a sexual tool. It is kind of hippie thought about nudity.

Actually there are many things that are more hippie than even the druids that are called the hippie tree hugger.

Okay, my two bits on the guide. It's good, but apart from the class list it doesn't mention that most males will still do what a woman tells them if she catches them off guard. They still have this matriarchal hangover, they still structure their culture towards the females. Hell this goes all the way up to having the Goddess and her all female clergy (excepting the odd Genderbender)

My two bits on playing Eili's on Amia. It's okay. Can be fun, but lord allmighty are you suspicious, nigh on unwelcoming sometimes, and cliqueish as hell. I've played a truely Eili drow, and she has been locked out and forced to be alone before. Ya guys are brr.. chilly sometimes. I miss Wiggan.

It'd probably be a good idea to pick a good-aligned dragon to be a disciple of, unless it's something central to your character concept. It's just me, but I have always found the idea of a good aligned red disciple or other chromatic disciple to be on the same level as an evil aasimar. Neutral-aligned? Sure. But good-aligned should be an extreme rarity.

Beyond that, there's no specific PrC restrictions aside from those above. Though, I'd think you'd need a *really* good story to explain how a drow becomes an actual Purple Dragon Knight. :P Unless you're using it to emulate another class, that is.

I encourage you to give it another shot, Numbers.

And Delarwyn's quite right on the nudity bit. Not that they, as living creatures, can't appreciate the nudity of specific specimens- It's not a shameful thing to be unclothed, but Eilistraeens don't constantly go frolicking around in the buff. It tends to make visitors uncomfortable, which is the complete opposite of what the Shrine tries to accomplish. But, a lot of this can largely be explained IC, if a person visits.

If your Grandad would be a murderer and a robber, would you become one too? I think your lineage shouldn't matter much on what YOU become, unless the character concept is based on following ancestors footsteps...which is pretty common in Amia though... And I am talking about tieflings, Aasimars and the half devils, half dragons etc. The drow and other races which can make their evilness and/or goodness pass to their children, are a different matter. planetouched and half-something usually never see their monstrous ancestors.

That might be true with most mortals, such as humans and elves, but dragons are another story. They're *very* heavily influenced by Evil and Good, which are considered extant, primal forces in FR. All chromatic dragons have a heavy dose of innate evil, just as all metallics have a heavy dose of innate good. This is passed on down to their progeny, be it from mating with another dragon or with something else.

Draconomicon. Monster Manual. Dragons, like Outsiders, are Paragons of their Alignment. They are born Lawful Evil. Lawful Good. Etc.

Pardon the Off Topic, but...

Can the same apply to Planar Dragons?

I cannot help but see Planar Dragons as exception, but probably because the Chromatics and Metallics are the most known.

Planar Dragons are even more the paragons of alignment since they become inexplicably tied to the traits of their plane, embodying it in a form only slightly less pure than the outsiders inhabiting it.

Good to know.

Seems I am taking the right direction for Auron, then.

You just did. The DM's posted it. Funny thing about campaigns, DM's have that right, you know? To determine what, if any, Lore is applicable to their Campaign system.

So source material is your DM, my friend.

I think that actually in the Shrine RP, the drow will do what they choose to do according with the Eilistraeen believes. But, in the end we will always answers to Jud and Maddie. I honestly believe that they lead the shrine together, even though I think she is the highest authority.

But, the shrine people are free to do what they want inside the few rules that were placed and if you follow Jud's guide, you are just fine.

I think that there are all types of players in the Shrine, from Chilly to warm. A new drow coming from Ultrinnan will be helped but not trusted until the drow proves he is serious about embracing Eilistraee.

Sakkran is quite right about nudity. Even though Eilistraeens won't give a damn for your nudity, we try to make the shrine a nudity free zone, unless it is part of a shrine rp, like the hunt and such, in respect to the players that come to it.

I think all good aligned people could choose to follow Eilistraee, I don't think the race matters either, I would think that the question is why would my human with draconic blood follow a drow deity?

Most of the Eilstraee are drow, we have half elves that are married or were married at some point with drow that are Eilistraeen as well. We have others that were adopted by a long time friendship with the people of the Shrine. But, I believe all non drow Eilistraee have a good backup story for why they embraced the Goddess.

So, if you are a Gnome and want to play an Eilistraee, just have some background that explains why a gnome is praying for a Drow Goddess and such and you will be fine. But, that is my opinion, not sure how the DM see it.

One more quick note about Dragon Disciples: to become one means that you consciously embrace your heritage. You tap into the, say, red dragon blood in your veins and ritually ignite it: the power, the greed, the hatred, the vanity and rage of the dragon. You seek to become one with your heritage, you're on a quest to become more and more like your dragon ancestor.

In most cases, it seems blasphemy for any priest to devote herself to such a goal; you're supposed to be striving towards union with your god, not with some magical monster. It's certainly strange for one to be of a different or opposed alignment to your ancestral dragon: if your quest is to become like the cruel and malicious green dragon, how on earth can you remain Lawful Good? How would a an evil thief awaken the blood and powers of the silver dragon, if not by a virtuous set of mind; and why would he want to?

Dragon Disciples don't become what they are by coincidence. I daresay it's a devotion comparable to that of a priest or a monk, and it changes you from the very core. That's why it makes no sense to be a Dragon Disciple Cleric (save for a precious few exceptions, such as Tiamat and Bahamut), and even less so if the dragon ancestor is of an incompatible alignment.

Eilistraee seems particularly incompatible for RDDs: she preaches the dark elves' return to the surface, to claim their place among elves, as elves. To embrace their nature but defeat the evil in it. Why, then, would an Eilistraeen strive to become something she is not, something the goddess is not, rather than focus on worshiping her patron? Becoming a Drow female has great ritual meaning in the faith: males must spend time as female before their initiation, and non-Drow paint their skin to appear Drow. It would seem blasphemous and completely counter-intuitive to consciously and willingly taint this Drowness that's so highly treasured in the faith. It's possible, certainly, but it doesn't seem very sensible.

Iron you mean the priests male right? It isn't required to all males that become an Eilistraeen to spend time as Drowness I think.

The coloring the skin part, I remember that there is a ritual that I tried to implement but became too dangerous at the time. It involved that all non drow would color their skin with charcoal or other dark color and go to the elven land and share the Eilistraee culture with them. To embrace and to share culture that are very similar in some points.

And yes, I think it would make more sense for a RDD worship Draconic Gods. Just because they chose to become a draconic, they chose the heritage because they worship the power of the dragon to an extent. It would make sense that they would choose a deity that are compatible with that choice. My blue dragonkin is a monk of Tiamat and tries to follow her dogma even though it is difficult to do in Amia.

Quote:
They usually won’t let this control them though, usually realizing that they are the exception, not the rule.

im adding this to my siggy..perhaps someone will read it!

And by the way, just a small note, there is an idol of Eilistraee in the temple of love now. So Eilistraeen worshipers that are not part of the Shrine can also worship in the multi deity temple, known as Temple of Love.

Also many of other Gods and Goddesses... It is pretty neat.

I don't think she should be in there, personally. To me, it makes little to no sense. If I recall correctly, Love/Romantic Love/Beauty (Maybe beauty. I haven't got my big book o' Gods handy)/Sensuality aren't in her portfolio, or in her domains. Yes, her followers promote merriment and song, but I have a hard time swallowing that anyone would lump her in with Sune, Sharess, Hanali Celanil, et cetera.

Furthermore, the Shrine isn't -closed- to those who worship Eilistraee, and you don't have to live there to visit the idol and pay homage. Even from Cordor, it's not exactly a long trip. Furthermore, it gives people less of a reason to visit the center of that religion's faith on the island, on the grounds that "Hey, this is WAY closer.", rather than go to a place that could, frankly, do well with a bit more PC traffic.

Actually, it does make sense, since she's a goddess of beauty.

Personally, I don't think just having 'beauty' under the belt is a good enough reason. Compare her dogma to the dogmas of the other religions. It stands out like a technicolor thumb. Maybe if Eilistraee wanted all her female followers to 'show love' to anyone they're converting it'd work. But no. She even proclaims swift violence against those who offer violence first. It doesn't fit. /my opinion.

My opinion is now and have always been, that she's Faerun Pantheon's "Jesus".

Compare the values they are both said to have, and you'll find it to be largely similar.
