It turns out, there is a way to make the malfunctioning game use an older version of ATI drivers, without having to change them to an older version in the whole system. Now, I don't know if it'll work for every graphic card model, I have no idea if it'll work for Vista users (Probably won't), because I use XP. I tested it on a rather old card, my old Radeon 9550 256 version. Despite it's age, after a certain update to it's drivers NWN stopped rendering shiny water. And after a few more updates, games like Knights of the Old Republic 1/2 became unplayable. But then I came across this nifty file:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AVN8WAEV

Seems all one has to do (once you unpack it) is drop it into the main folder of the malfunctioning oldie, and that's it. The game will use an older version of ATI drivers contained within the file. Worked for me. NWN started rendering shiny water like it once did. To boot, I tested KOTOR1 and 2 with it, and they both work like a dream again now.

I take no responsibility for the file, and how it functions on your configuration though. It worked for me, but I've no idea if/how it'll work for other ATI cards. So use it completely at your own risk. Hopefully it'll help at least some folks, though. :)

Assuming those are ages old 32bit drivers, those definately won't work in Vista 64 or Winsows 7 64. At least they crash nwn on my system.

I do a trick similar to this on my 64-bit system. The change though, is not to put them in the game directory, but put the files in C:\Windows\SysWOW64

This is the subsystem that gets loaded when you run a 32-bit application. Running it this way won't make it crash when it tries to use the drivers you have placed in the game directory as 64-bit drivers

But then all 32bit apps would use that driver, not just NWN?

You might want to try this procedure, if the provided file doesn't work. Supposedly, all you have to do is attain the proper version of old ATI drivers for your system/card, and extract the proper file from there.

Quote:
# Go to www.ati.com and follow the Drivers & Software link. In the left-hand window, find your operating system, then look under Radeon for Previous Drivers and Software. Click that link, then look in the right-hand pane and click the "RADEON Previous Windows Drivers and Software versions prior to CATALYST 5.1 / Multimedia Center 9.03" link. Download the Catalyst 4.11 drivers from that page.

# Open the downloaded executable file with WinRAR or WinZip. Search the contents until you find atioglxx._ (That's an underscore _ character after the period at the end of the filename.)

# Extract (drag-and-drop) atioglxx._ to any place on your hard drive. You should put it in the root of a drive so it is easier to find using the command window (DOS prompt).

# Open a command window by clicking Start>Run and typing command. Find the directory where you extracted atioglxx._

# At the command prompt, type

expand atioglxx._ atioglxx.dll

# Move the atioglxx.dll file to your SWKotOR2 (or whatever game) directory. (You can use Windows Explorer to move the file.)

Only 32bit apps using OpenGL. Meaning: old games that probably need the older ati drivers. Directx games will not use this file.

I have been using this trick myself to run NWN on an X1600 Pro. I'd be lying if I said I was seeing the full potential of my card, but at least the framerate doesn't crash to 2-3 fps.
