I'm sure a few of you read that post about paranoia on Amia and disagreed; I did as well but I don't think my disagreement will be the same as yours.
The paranoia is not so much a case of people(DMs and Players) actively disliking or seeking to hurt other players, it is more a case of people(DMs and Players) passively not bothering with them.
This is Amia's biggest problem and it is the reason people are leaving the server. The core of established players and DM's has become intensely cliquey and exclusive; either demanding absurd feats of RP genius or utter compliance in matters of lore and other IC and OOC game detritus from new players or excluding people unintentionally through single minded obsessions with garnering more loot.
I realized that I was doing this and immediately set about trying to expand my IC and OOC horizons insofar as people and characters I made contact with was concerned. I was disappointed to discover that attempting to integrate people beyond their 'traditional' comfort zones is a waste of time. For people in an RP environment, a story environment, to have 'traditional' comfort zones is monumentally destructive to the dynamic of the 'story-world'.
It is also the reason for the aforementioned development of seemingly inviolable and eternal 'traditional' cliques that people belong to. You may have your on-line friends that you like to RP with but when your PCs are a significant factor in the background story of the setting then you must interact with it. It would seem that this is not the case on Amia and things are not going to change here. All you have to do is look dispassionately at any server posts that tentatively suggest harsher interventions by DMs and you will see things will not change; neither the well established interest groups nor the DMs that aided in the establishment of these interest groups(and often have PC's who are members of them) want to see things change.
I was really sad when I realized this. For a story to remain interesting it must be dynamic. Amia is no longer dynamic and hence is steadily sinking into drudgery. So, thanks to all I've RPed with in my time here but I don't want to be here for the now inevitable death. Just to reiterate; I thought long and hard about this, I've poured hours and hours and hours into playing on Amia and I've not regretted it at all. I've had great fun here and met some fantastic and very creative people. I'm not trying to say that everyone is crap but me, the reason I decided to leave is that I think that this problem has become an inherit part of the server, it is something we all do almost unintentionally. That said, I will honestly miss the place, good luck to all of you,
regards,
Will
P.S.: Please give the Epic Disciple Gloves to Domovoi and the Epic Spell Resistence Cloak to Tesher. The rest of Jess Incognito's crap I donate to The Gambling Federation. I'd do it myself except that I uninstalled NwN and broke the CD in two. Amia or nothing.

It's not about favoritism or attacking any one person. The point i was trying to make is that when you become too accustomed to something that suits your tastes, particularly perceived power, you inevitably rail against change(and criticisms?).
Status quo is there to be changed isn't it? That's what makes conflict and co-operation interesting. This potential should be universally accessible in game if one is willing to invest the time and effort. This is not the case. Again, not an attack on any one person, more a comment on the way people are acting in the most part without thinking about it. If I was arrogant or self-righteous enough to think I could change it I'd stay around and harass everyone endlessly. But I can't, so I'll leave instead of being even more of an in-game pain in the backside.
p.s. Tormak; you need to work on taking criticism, usually it's intended to be constructive.

*looks around for evidence*
I see a changed Cordor. A destroyed Shadowflame Manor. A changed Khem. An expanded Caraigh. A very narrowly escaping burning Amia Forest. A renovated Skull Crags. A being-built Casino. A splinter gambling orgnaization based off that.
That's not counting the gamut of mechanical changes that probably shouldn't count, like balancing, etc.
The status quo changes like it always does. You could say that change is the status quo.

From what I was able to figure out in your post, you note that usually people will not go out of their comfort zones in regards to roleplay. The groups of people that only roleplay with eachother and only rarely roleplay with others on occasion. I noticed this a while ago, but when I thought about it I decided that there would be no point in trying to change it. People will always have their prefrences, good or bad, and fortunately/unfortunately Amia has it's fair share.
There will always be people who will group up and roleplay with eachother while pushing everyone away. It's been that way since I came to this server, but recently I've been finding myself as one of the people who can't find the decent roleplay one would expect to find when logging in. When you find a roleplay that works for you, you stick with it while you can and enjoy it while it lasts - or at least, that's what I have to do.
I know my opinion about this might not be that accurate or useful, seeing as I have a character for nearly every type of roleplay and every possible build combination in existance, but I like contributing.
It's sad to see one of the well-known members of Amia dissapearing like many are, and to hear that you're so fed up that you've smashed the disks into smithereens makes me sad. It was nice to know you were around while you were, even if I never really roleplayed with you more than a few times.
So long, and try to have a good life.
Usually I look on the Amia messenger. See if any friends are online. If there is I will jump on.
So noone online that I RP with on a regualar basis. So i thought to myself hey i'll try interact with the community.
Get outside Cordor and oh look. Bored Shadowdancer. Goes around hips just annoying the hell outta me. Weak RP. Sorry theres a reason I look before logging.
Im sure its the same for most people. If you see all your mates online your far more inclined to login. (Unless your one of those people that hunts often)
The same would go for DMs I'd imagine. They would have their favourites. people they like DMing for so they would more often swing by and see what their up to. And I know very well that you DMs try to get around to as many players as possible. You cant deny human nature though.
To you Jess. Its a game the moment the game is no longer fun dont play. Doesn't mean you have to go cold turkey and post your goodbyes on the forums (Mind you I did when I Rage quit) Just take a break. Find something else that you enjoy.

Leaving fully is your choice and I cannot do anything about it, but... still... maybe a break would be for the best. Sometimes, when we come back after a long break, you see that some things changed. And if they did not change, you can extend your break, in hopes that they will get better in the future. In case they have not gotten better, you will notice that, after all, perhaps you should move on, indeed.
Why come back if you still feel heartbroken with what is/was going on?
I usually measure my break time by the way I talk to some Amian friends when we talk about Amia and how things have been. If I notice that I am still pissed off at something, or that talking about some things make me hurt inside (AKA heartbroken!), I then realize that it still is not the time to come back.
God knows how I wish I could be back to RP with old friends, but I know that I am not ready to come back yet.
Anyway, we RPed very few times, but I liked when it happened.
Take care out there, mate.

I've gone cold turkey from smoking cigarettes. But I've still got a packet, just in case...
I think niches and cliques are all the rage! Doesn't mean they're exclusive, nor does it mean that people are better off not joining them. The cliquety-clique is very much apart of the game.
I don't agree with anything you said Jess - but have fun!

I have to agree with Jess. It is very very hard to move past the comfort zone or to even break into the group. I'm guilty of that both ways. Of trying to break in and trying to break out but also trying to keep up with a hundred convos to include new people.
Sometimes patience is needed.
Other times what's needed is simply initiative or seeing that your *nod* was returned.
Cliques (not cliches dears. Those are something else entirely) are good for knowing who you can depend upon but not so good if you're trying to expand.

Yeah the cliques have always been around, but you can break into them or draw people out of them if your RP and OOC manner is good. Not saying yours isn't, ive digged your RP as Jess Incognito, but yeah, I've always been able to initiate RP with just about anyone on the server, sometimes you have to work a little harder though and be patient.
And those people who put up the major walls against newcomers, well, do you really want to be RPing with those kinds of players? I know I don't, for all the story-destructive reasons you already mentioned.

People will engage with you despite the tendency to stick with who and what they know, provided you give them something fresh to work with.
So, you could try putting on a sandwich board and pace about in Cordor East wailing about the end being nigh. Now of course, you could say that doing so you're trying to become the centre of attention, but this is not necessarilu a bad thing if the intention nebhind it is to network, provide some kind of social glue, and provide the basics of a dynamic environment.
But you can't walk about with a sandwich board forever, because eventually it becomes old news and unless people become fond of you they will go back to walking on by. So you must either invent some other kind of social bonding agent, or leave it to someone else for a change.
The point is, we should all strive to look outward at some point, because you can't get people involved if you won't get involved. It's one of those two-way street dealios.
Yups. I play so little (and my account doesn't match my forum login at all) that I am quite sure I can't be seen as a part of any clique but I never had any issue generating interesting RP provided there were players around. It's just a matter of not being passive but kinda shoving your RP wish through their throats before they can say "I just wanna hunt?". Leave them no option but to tag along.
I tried to play with Krunk, but he only ever logged in once...its kind of hard to roleplay with you if you're not exactly around. Anyway, next time you're back for some more fun in the sun, play Krunk! He's great!

I agree with most of what you say, for various and sundry reasons. Most of them being my own.
I also agree with (some, mostly the not-snark) of what Tormak says.
There are plenty of "cliques" that are open, welcoming, and a lot of fun to play with. The Grove/Glade, to name a couple. Sure, Ania didn't get along, but the /players/ are distilled awesome. (Except for Ron. He's a punk. )
But the "PowerCliques" are and will continue to be existant. They do and will continue to hold sway over the vast majority of things. Can I name names? Yes. Absolutely. Can I back it up with examples? Again, yes. Absolutely. But I'm not going to, because it's tacky and really pointless. It is what it is. Amia's their world. We're just living in it.
And it's really not the people. They're kinda interchangable, really. If it's not Joe, Jane, and Bob, it'll be George, Rich, and Julie.
That being said, I hope you come back. I won't say you will or won't, but I hope you do.
If not...I hope life's good to you.

Whats worked for me is making new an interesting PCs. Not just for my taste but what I think others can enjoy as well. Also doing my best to make the character unlike any of my others.
You can see a new face of the game this way. But instead of thinking how you are going to get you favorite character involved in more and more stuff, make a new character that will eventually make it to your new ideas and goals.
Also this is not directed to anyone. I know its hard, but trying to not RP things that constantly get people upset OOC. If people are getting upset about how you are doing something, you are probably doing it the wrong way and should go to some different RP style more people will enjoy with you. Yes there will be babies that complain no matter what, but when its everyone disliking the RP, stop it all and start a new theme that's not like the last, it obviously isn't making you very popular.
There are right ways to do everything here. Not everyone can do them or pull off every theme. I absolutely suck at drow, Paladins, and dramatic social RP. I know I do and I choose to not play them as quickly as I would play another type of character.
Most people know who my mains are,
Brandrik
Puff
Azaquis
Those are just three of like the 100 PCs I made that actually had a working and long lasting theme that (I hope <.<) people involved with them have been able to enjoy as much as I have. And even now I still am making new PCs to branch out further than what these three are capable of.
Just putting out what has worked for me, because I do get the feeling sometimes I am confining myself in just one block of RP. Something to think about and try out if you are feeling like you want to get out into different RP groups.
But the "PowerCliques" are and will continue to be existant. They do and will continue to hold sway over the vast majority of things. Can I name names? Yes. Absolutely. How fortunate I didn't ask you to. That's the whole point of "I'm not naming names".
It's a waste of my time, yours, and whoever else reads it. The cliques are /there/. PMing YOU isn't going to change that. Might change the people IN the clique, (though I highly, highly doubt it) but it's not going to change the nature of the beast.

If you don't want to be part of the solution, you're forcibly being part of the problem by taking the attitude of "Even though I know about it, there's nothing I can do."
I made my offer, if you don't want to accept the DM team's help, that's no one's fault but your own.

Cliques exist on all servers and I don't see anything wrong with them really. It's just people who RP the same way hanging out together. Nor do I see any conscious DM decisions to interact with Cliques only nor do I see DM's purposefully holding back players roleplay. If you can't make a move without a DM that's not the DM's fault. You figure out ways to move on without the helping hand of the gods.
I like you Jess, but don't make your personal experience here -everyone's- personal experience here.
Either way, good luck and take care.

Cliques exist. That's not a good thing or a bad thing. It's a fact thing.

I think what he's referring to is your mention that powercliques run the server and that it's "their world" and his asking for proof, which I also take umbrage with because I think it's a very unfair, very untrue statement. Especially from someone who's risen to a pretty large position of power and holds sway over quite a few PC's.

Yups. If you are going to make broad claims that people are being favored OOCly, I want names and evidence in my inbox so that I may rectify the situation.

That falls in with my "I don't want to name names" because it's /not worth it/. Even if it's one person and you remove them, which you can't because they're not actually doing anything wrong, SOMEONE is going to replace them.
That's the idea. Cliques are evolving and never-ending.
And also, I didn't say the DMs were involved in it. We, as players, are perfectly capable of welcoming or driving off players all on our own, thanks.

If 'everyone' sees a problem and 'no one' speaks up, the problem proceeds and nothing gets fixed.
This is an attitude I see in 'a lot' of players lately. It is a bad attitude. If there is a problem, I want to know about it so action can be taken or at least so it can be recorded in some manner or another. If you actively hold out on information because it's 'not worth it', all you're doing is contributing to the problem.
Just because "cliques are evolving and never ending" doesn't mean we shouldn't constantly evaulate them and make sure they aren't breakingthings. Everyone seems to think they do, but when you ask for hard evidence, well, they all just clam up.

Believe me. If I had evidence of actual /rulebreaking/, you'd have it too.
I'd expect the same, and have seen it, thankfully, against our "clique" of the Banites.
But much of a pain in the ass as it is...
You can't ban someone for not liking me. You can't ban someone for not RPing with me.
You can't even ban someone for, say, using proper IC to lead RP /away/ from me. Can we cast supposition that it's OOCly motivated? Sure. Can we prove it? No.
(Mind, I'm not saying this happens to /me/, I'm using me as an example.)

That only works in some cases, though. As in, some problems can't be fixed. I'm inclined to believe that cliquing, and the resulting "freeze-out," or whatever, is one of those things. Some do it on purpose, others don't, but if it leaves people feeling left out, it sucks.
It looks like there's a quick rise in events these days, though, that might change a lot of it. New friendships are formed during long running events, where people actually have to group up and work with people they don't know. It may seem to some like something you'd do with a bunch of kids at a new school or something, but if it works, it works, and is worth it in the end.

I also hope to see you back again Incognitos when you've had your break from Amia. There is a lot of up and down periods to game play on a personal level and on an interactive level. More fun, less fun, some stressing, some relaxing. Not much different in-game than in-life.
I would agree wholeheartedly we all have comfort zones. Some of us are more limited on it and some of us are very loose with what it takes to have a comfort zone.
I've got a pretty limited comfort zone. Then again, I'm not a shut-out either. I try to have my PC doing something a little out of routine for them now and then when I'm ready to. I will randomly have days I try to speak with some 'stranger' ICly because they looked interesting to speak with. Heck, I've sent OOC comments to strangers just to let them know I think they have an interesting PC name; or I see OOC they're a fraction person and use it as a basis to say "hello" out-of-character.
You know, there is people who'll make a circle and keep it ridgid. But that's a few amount of people. We wouldn't be in an online community like this if we didn't like trying to have a circle we'll let slowly grow or change. People who really like a ridgid style of not really expanding themselves I don't see as being the type who do a lot of Role Playing. One of the biggest things is just the creation of multiple characters to fill different roles.
Dynamic? Amia is so dynamic you can't even follow the events of every PUBLIC faction. Obviously private factions will be changing in ways you don't see without being involved. My goodness, I would have to spend hours on the forums to be reading every public post, and still only know a small part of what is constantly going on in Amia's existence. I spend 2hours on the forums easily as it is just keeping up with topics more prevalent to my own PC's and have to leave a lot untouched.
And as for an invitable death, even World of Warcraft will become obsolete. Actually, WoW has had a more-harsh downfall than Amia in my opinion of having once been a player. That game is SO HUGE that they're loosing potential customers and constantly dropping requirements to be a player there in their game mechanics. [[ignore money expenses]]. Amia's smaller player base has actually been a boon for it that it can stay changing dynamically without leaving anyone behind because it's all based on interactions. WoW can only go 1 direction- harder harder harder- which is hurting them horribly. The only reason it wouldn't look that way is because of the massive player-base; but on a small scale, WoW has a punctured lung already.
In the end, all you're worried about is Human Nature.

btw... you should keep logging in if you want to, and playing, and broadening your horizons. You hve no idea how frustrating it is to a DM ot try to do anything on a server where a bunch of people only log in for "Scheduled events" and RP with their friends and all you want to do is run an event off the cuff without shceudling it so it's a surprise, so 80 people don't show up out of the woodwork with PCS they sewar have been around all the time but in reality only logged in twice.

I am greatly saddened by you leaving, I liked Jess allot and loved RPing with her. I also was hoping for the expansion and use of F L A G as a legal avenue to get illegal things done in Cordor. I know that I myself as Godo has had problems in not being in any certain clique but instead trying to go along with several things all at once, FLAG, the Bucktooth and with the Drow, if that has hurt some of yours and others RP then I do apologize on that.
Cliques are something we all need to deal with, the only real problem with them is when these cliques would only RP within their own clique. As long as you RP along with others and what they are doing as your character would then the cliques can be a good thing, it creates unity to factions, tribes, like minded people. When they separate themselves from all others RP is when it can become a problem and detrimental to a RP server.
Just ignoring RP and walking past someone just because you do not like them is also detrimental to the server as well. RP with the situations that come and play the character as the character should act in situations he comes across, no matter your likes and dislikes OOC wise.
I really do hope I see Jess around again, she was a key part of Godos life, as well as others lives, here on Amia. You had a plan and was getting some things changed IC wise for that plan.
I throw myself at different cliques and groups so fast, it could be confused for humping the entirety of the player-base.
But I do agree with some parts of your post Incog. I don't think it's nessicarily favoritism, but rather a standard for what is considered "good" rp, that only a few can get rewards with any sort of regularity. While it may appear to be favoritism, it is not.
Rp that is phenominal to some might be a bore for others. Some rp that seems fantastic and whimsical to some might be unrealistic or unacceptible to frumps. If others in the player-base enjoy it, it should likely cull favor, but it seems that in most cases it doesn't. Or maybe it does but with an alarming amount of distance between it's irregularity.
I'd cast a couple of examples.
There once was a new rper that arrived on the scene, who had expansive posts and descriptions. Using a vocabulary I had not seen matched since the days of our old home english major Zeral, thier rp made me feel at once slightly inadequate (for I had grown accustomed to far less than I used to push myself for,) and immersed. And while some who may not have had the faintest idea of what a particular word meant or perhaps didn't want to read the paragraph or three that would flicker upon the screen in rapid succession, I immediately targeted them with my DC wand.
On the flip side, there once was a player that organized grand tournament of bare-knuckle brawling. The rp was revolving mostly around combat, no post was really longer than two sentences at a time; brief blurbs of emotions or frustrations form combatants or an emoted knock-out punch after the match as typing while engaged in combat wasn't always a safe thing to do. The audience was just brief, holding conversations on the side. And yet, despite the seemingly minimalist nature, it was a group of people, gathered together and enjoying themselves. And people enjoying themselves meant the server was doing it's job; being entertaining. And so, everyone there got DC's, and the one that organized it got an extra one. Despite the fact I'd not likely go to rp in that event myself (for I loathe pvp oddly enough and prefered the first example's style,) I felt it was worthy of reward by virtue of it being both enteraining for OTHERS and still IC.

I think a lot of this is bullshit.
Cliques only exist through the perception of others. Often cliques don't realise they're a clique and therefore are not maliciously excluding others from RP.
If newbies or whoever are too timid to just RP with someone and get involved, then it's their problem, not the 'cliques'.

Some newbies learn by watching. And then they jump in when they have something to add. They may not get it right, but they'll try.
I think that if anything, being too timid to RP is something which can happen whether you're new or old. It sure is one thing that has struck me dumb for long periods of time. You worry that the words you are putting in your characters are not worthy. But you know, you can't get it right all the time, you just have to deal with failure and try to do better. Fear of failure will have you reaching for the backspace key all the time.

That's not counting the gamut of mechanical changes that probably shouldn't count, like balancing, etc.
The status quo changes like it always does. You could say that change is the status quo.
I should also clarify that I am not trying to detract or undermine the value of the work the DM and Design team put in. I think the scope of effort made is one of the things that keeps people playing Amia.
What am am citing is a prevailing attitude regarding the perceived value of one players contribution over another. Frankly, many of those examples you listed back up what I've said about some established players displaying an often unconscious or unintended disdain for what they perceive to be 'lesser' RPers.
I would say that the vast majority of people who have posted here (and I thank you all for your well wishes) are not 'that' kind of player, at least not intentionally. But the core factor remains; if you are a part of the setting as well as a character in it then you have a responsibility to interact with the wider server community. If you do not then you and your character should be removed from any position of authority in the 'story', which is what Amia is.
It is here that the ugly face of Amia's cliques come to the fore. If you've been around long enough and are well known then it is highly unlikely that 'divine intervention' will step in, mainly because the problem I believe is there isn't seen as a problem by many people, as has been demonstrated by some of the replies in this thread.
Yes, it may be the safe way to handle things from the perspective of keeping organizations considered important to the setting stable is concerned, but it is also a great way to cause stagnation and foster arrogance and exclusivity.
Again, this is not intended as an attack on any one person or group, specifically I am not making a veiled attack on DMs and this post should not be read as such. It is an issue of wider 'server-culture' and this is why I have decided to retire from NwN instead of sending a simple PM asking why a specific interest group is being so cliquey.
So, lathandier, you are right in a sense. Cliques do exist through the perception of others and I believe you have surmised the attitude I have been speaking of; "If newbies or whoever are too timid to just RP with someone and get involved, then it's their problem". Now, if the clique doesn't actually see them self as being exclusive and are passively or unknowingly excluding people then the problem cannot be solved, it is hence inherit in the setting. Now we see the violence inherit in the system...

Well said indeed Halen_Van, My RP is not the same as yours and yours to another, it doesn’t matter the amount or style or type personality anyone’s character is as long as its all IC. Your characters personality takes time to develop and changes over that time.
No one should really be looking at others RP of their character and say “I would play that character differently”, actually no you wouldn’t because then it would become a totally different character. Each of us here have our own personal styles and as long as they are showing that style IC and with other players, giving them some fun, they deserve recognition.
Cliques is not just in perception, there used to be a day when it was even recognized and shown pride of being with a certain clique. It started to become a “bad word” when it started to get associated with elitisms. There will always be cliques, be them good or bad ones, Problems start when a clique, or group, of players gets in the hobbit of RPing just with that group and start to either ignore or respond negatively to the RP of other players.
Personally I like RPing my character because it doesn’t matter what the other players RP, type character, clique, or group they are in, there generally is some type of interactive RP when run into someone. Some characters out there just are not meant to interact in such a way. Some would try and join these groups, some would try and avoid them, while others would be even hostile. It doesn’t matter really just as long as its done IC and not just in OOC ways.

i don't understand what the problem is?
What kind of cliques do you talk about? Factions? They always welcome new members. I want to play with the Banite clique. I make a Banite PC, join their group, watch them play and find out how I can contribute. Then I start crawling up whatever ladder of hierarchry they have established. Eternal order? I make a Kelemvorite that actually doesn't like undead. Elfs? I make an elf who worships the Seldarine and doesn't like drow.
Or you want to play a separate PC and want to interact with these groups. Easiet way, PK one of their members. Always gets you involved.
