I'm not entirely sure how this got onto Drow and the underdark anyway, pretty sure the OP made a generalised statement about the playerbase of the entire server, not just the underdark playerbase. That's another issue.
I guess its too late to go back to a generalised view now.
Personally, I have been to L'Obsul only a few times and every time except ONCE, I was the only one there. I took a good look around, and I believe the place is a little to... big and empty.
Oh its the right size, it just needs a playerbase willing to play there. I've got one PC based there. I asked for a forum to give it prominence. Its certainly ready to go and I think once we get a critical mass there, it'll be fine.
But I'll say it again, B-mia being dead is a problem and A-mia is down to 80% of what it was.
It just seems to extensive to me. I mean, it is great that they have a bar, a mythaler and some other things, but they feel like they are to distant from eachother and there do seem to be some blank spots, where there is just nothing. Unless it is still a work in progress?

as far as I know yes. from what I understand, as it is finalized, more enterances will open and there will be easier travel in and out (for UD races) and non-UD races will have to wander aimlessly to get wherever they want to go.

They will also remove area's that won't be used I imagine, and basically optimize the area's. Area's in use will gain more prominence to I imagine. Area's being developed by factions will likely reflect this development also.
However this being said, it means making any head way's, or putting a lot of stock in B-Mia Underdark at the moment is a risky choice, as you may have that effort wiped out and taken away when it exists it's Beta.

I really doubt that DM events are the prominent reason people leave this server. The ratio players:plots suggests otherwise. I actually doubt it has a lot to do with the staff anyway.
That said: I think there is a DM-Drow issue, and it has been going on for years. Drow players are expected to show initiative, but not too much. It's quite a thin line for them, and I can see how it makes them somewhat insecure. This goes for all players, of course, but I think it really shows in Drow affairs. Unfortunately there's no manual of how to deal with a server like this.

All of Amia is essentially beta. I fixed most of the errors people reported, and now I am basically waiting for people to move in and come with more wishes. I rather tailor the open ends to the players than force the players to adopt my solutions.
That still doesn't open the magic pot of Drow players, I think.
Anyway, there is something players can do to make the place a bit more lively.
1. Post a review on the Amia page in Nwvault. Please, don't hesitate to give critique, I hate those "this server is whitout flaw!" posts that are obviously written by a staffmember or his favourite choirboy. Just show that we are active, and always welcoming new people. O, and don't go posting there all at the same time, spread the love.
2. Some people are actually bothering with asking other people for a nice PW world to play in. I mean: they don't open GS and click the top server... they gather information first. Unbelievable!
Anyway, many of these requests are posted on the BioWare forums. Take a look at it now and then and suggest Amia when you think it connects with the type of PW the player is looking for (once again: being honest is better than doing the "everything is shiny" routine).
NOT an npc leader. IMHO bringing in baenre was a huge mistake. We need a responsible pc leader. Because matron baenre isn't gonna do anything to keep any matrons in line except stand there like a useless npc.
And as far as the DMs events and player loss...i agree with the dms on this one. If the DM tries to impart not to throw yourself into the volcano and you jump in anyways, don't cry when you get scorched....HOWEVER...the dms could at least alleviate the losing players with DCs. EVERYONE loves DCs!!

Oh I agree there, but that's a whole different discussion.
A PC leader 'chosen' by Lloth would have so many complaints of DM favouritism it isn't funny.

If I am wrong about the reasons for this *coughs*"Empty Ultrinnan", then could someone please explain to me why it is empty, preferrably Yurell, Ainjyl, or others who have taken the opposite side of my stance
Having a PC leader always resulted in bitching and whining about the how and why she got to her position. Through vote? Oh please, Drow don't vote! Through brute force, then? She's nothing but a stupid powergamer. Through intrigue? What IS that, does it come on a stick and covered in chocolate?
Seriously, Baenre was the solution to two different problems. Firstly they wanted to ease this in-fighting a little because the Drow ended up doing nothing else, everyone wanting to be Ilharess of the city. And secondly they wanted to curb this every-Sunday-after-tea occurence of real life Lolth in the temple, personally petting and chatting with her Drow minions. Now you have a speaker for Lolth as it's supposed to be.
I'm glad this "bitchiest female wins the world" theme has been toned down a little. I actually agree with you, Geld, on the notion that some Drow players think everythings's sunny as long as I'm a bitch to people and my use of Drow words in everyday conversation is frequent and impeccable. A number of times now I've given up with my (male) characters just for that reason, but I don't think it is nearly as bad as you make it out to be. The Drow are by nature pretty mean, even to each other, and if you intend to stay true to character then you'll have to take the occasional gut punch. It's part of the game.
For my taste, it just ended up being way too much politics, and when I say politics I mean "who do we pull into a dark alley and stab next?". It lacked a bit in substance and connection to the outside world. Now that there's a disease around they all decided to "just not log on". It's awesome when DM initiative is thusly rewarded.

Z, to be fair, there was a sizable delay in the plot.
You had surfacers doing work on the disease, in-depth work RP'ly, supplying DM's with screenshots and asking for results that went un-answered for over a MONTH.
And before any of you DM's come running on your white horse to defend, I don't wanna hear a peep about "Plot at plots pace" because that DM specifically said "I'm doing finals and you'll have to wait".
*cough*
Like there wasn't another whole team of creative and imaginative DM's here to assist, had that DM simply said "Guys, I need some support here, help me out please?" Oh no, that simply won't do.
Besides, when I get told by a DM
"Your just a PLAYER. What rights do you HAVE in anything on AMIA?"
I kinda started wondering.
Might be something to think about, me boyos.

Meh - you're playing a Drow. If you don't like how the Drow work culturally, then don't play a Drow.
If you want to be a lore-bending friendly UD Drow, then be prepared to be raped - metaphorically; as rape is not tolerated on this server, for any of you potential rapists out there!
Amia says no.
But I digress; don't play a Drow if you don't like how Drow's minds work.

Frey's hitting some valid points here on the specific instance. I as a DM had been running an extended plot for some time long long ago, and at a point lost the energy and momentum to finish it, Ravenovf finished it off for me and while at the time I admit I was kinda resentful cause he'd taken it in a completely different direction, he DID Give people what they were hoping for in that he gave them closure.

I've tried a good 3 times. It's not for lack of trying. I just have no patience running around for a month, trying to raise interest and getting absolutely de nada!
Basically, Ultrinnan needs:
Baenre = Yes, it stops the OOC bitching, but the DM's only turn up when we invite them to little parties. Either play Baenre more actively, or let us sweep them aside - I'm tired of having a contact with the city head 12 times a RL year if I'm lucky!
Plague plot = scared folk off. Fuck, I stopped playing over that, because I felt it had been imposed on the playerbase, and because of the aforementioned unite or die coalitions behaviour playerside, 90% of the playerbase had no ability to input. I yelled at Tranny over this at the time, but feel now the blame actually laid playerside.
Lack of strong motivated leaders. = At least from what I've seen, the houses aren't pulling their weight. You can see this in how they fold up and gobble each other up. Also being in a house? Pointless. You can achieve anything you like houseless, due to Baenre. So, back to my first point, and another side effect of it
Nobody plays politics anymore. Drow politics is a HUUUUGE part of the RP. Having the immovable object at the top simply destroys that arena.
If you want people to play drow. Give it a POINT.
Oh, and a freebie. I've been telling you this shit for MONTHS NOW.
Took you long enough to listen.

Ah, but these are drow players in this instance, and drow players are unusually cruel to DMs. We've long since figured that out. I had ideas for that plot, but I certainly wasn't willing to throw myself over the edge of that cliff.

That would be me, and it is half-misquoted. The first part I definitely did say. The second part isn't really what I said, but it is fair, nonetheless, because it is what I meant for you to think because I knew it would ruffle your feathers.
hese are drow players in this instance, and drow players are unusually cruel to DMs.
Huh. We always felt it was you DM's being unusually cruel to us.
We are aware of that dynamic, actually, and it is a current discussion behind the DM curtain. We have taken the step of acknowledging the massive Drow vs. DM problem, a vicious cycle that began a long time ago. I was never really a part of the cycle, but I watched other DMs enter that world and get torn to pieces.
I think we are about to perform our own interteam therapy to get over it. And yes, Ultrinnan is a ghost town lately. Ideally, that should be interpreted as opportunity! in golden color, but unless you feel that DMs or players are eager for something to happen there (and due to our public attitude and players' lack of interest, that eagerness is not a guarantee), there's no real motivation. Save self-gratification.
See, right now, I'm honestly sat here, half wanting to just log in and see what I find, and half knowing I'll get an empty town, or worse God forbid, a newb drow player who I'll end up babysitting... and my wisdom teeth hurt at the moment, so I'm only doing tough love.
I'd love to log in and just Roleplay. These days that's not an option it seems.
As for you guys playing therapy, yes, it's old shit. Shit so old I don't have a real hand in it. basically though, we always feel we get the short end of the stick, and that sometimes we have to walk a certain line exactly, elsewise you chastise us.
At the risk at picking old scabs, the Qos attempt to remove Baenre is a good example of drow players playing drow, and getting beaten by a Dee-Emm for it. It's incidents like that that make us many times bitten, many times wary.

Oh no no. The therapy I mention is not the old drow therapy. That's DM handling disputes between drow players, or between DMs and drow.
This is interteam. We have a problem that we have to get over, and I think we need to talk it out amongst ourselves.
I will be honest: the drow are not the only ones who get the ten foot pole treatment. There are a few factions and even individual players who are known as minefields - if a DM interacts with them at all, 100% of the time that DM is going to have his or her legs blown off and wind up laying wounded in a rice paddy field screaming for salvation.
It doesn't mean that we don't...it just means that it can take us a long time to build up the strength and the resolve to do so.
It is easy for a player to say, "You should do this anyway and like it, too, because it is your job. It is your responsibility." Players have the privilege of ignoring certain other players or groups of players without significant consequence. We DMs, however, do have an obligation to at the very least answer or respond and decide whether or not action needs to be taken, and if so, what kind.
:) It's cool you guys want to organise this amongst yourselves - I hope it works out! However, as a show of good faith, I'm going to be cutting the OOC out of my diet, down to tiny portions )

This is the sort of thing I don't like to see. NPC immunity. Resistance to change. It leads to stagnation and death.
I got it? |Anyway, I've got an order of prostheses here, along with soothing cream to rub into your cauterised stumps.
Oh, and to contribute btw, can we organise a play a drow day thing, just as a taster? Nothing fancy? Just Dm shouts through the day, maybe a couple silly mini-events...

I pretty much have faced the trend that some dms will have no involvement with some factions what so ever and in turn a good bit of the players within that faction. It is something that happens can't really blame the dm team for being human and having their own mind and feelings.

From my experience, no dm has an irrational dislike for certain factions/ races, but more of a feeling that comes from how they are treated.(edit - that is to say DMs tend to have their reasons for avoiding groups) Drow players CAN be very hard on dms, I've seen it. I've seen drow players being highly elitist, and i've seen people who were very interested in playing drow get brushed to he side by the attitudes in ultrinnan. I count myself lucky, in that when I first logged in there were many able and willing to help me out, and that is something I try to do for all new drow i meet.
I've seen both sides of the drow player base in my years here, the side of us that are one of the most ooc nice group of players on the server, and the side of us that feels they are better than everyone else because they can give a 15 minute speech in pure drow. Even I, myself, have grown tired of drow rp somewhat, but i realize that to fix the problems there are, one can't just go away and ignore it until its better. To try and bring the plague plot back underground I grabbed a common-drow dictionary, and brought my PC up to the surface and tried to communicate with humans. I even had him drawing pictures in dirt with his sword to try and cross the language barrier.
I kind of got off topic of my post, but what I'm going to say is this. The drow community, as a whole, has to decide what it wants to be. Will we be accepting of everyone and let everyone have fun, or will we be elitist and have a small core group of players, with a new person straggling in every once in a while. I personally hope for the former, and I'm sure there are many who wish the same.

I admit that I only like playing drows, because my mind works closest to theirs and I enjoy their complexity.
My personal lack of activity is explained simply with the fact that there isn't enough players around that would motivate me enough to continue. I've always been a person who'd rather be someone's right hand, rather than being a leader myself.
My main character, Malag'Yaz, has only been in one qu'ellar and lives too much in the past to actually consider joining a house at the moment. He's a person to like schemes and plots though, but for that there needs to be other schemers and plotters around. And if there's not many drow around.. there aren't that many schemes around either which is a huge mood killer for me.
Perhaps that'll change in time. Not in the near future though, since I'm very busy with matters in real life.

...in fear.
I haven't played a drow yet because well, quite frankly I wouldn't want to screw it up and wouldn't want to play a surface drow or a nice drow more than I could help it, and just haven't made myself time to sit down and actually learn all I'd need to about drow to play one well. Also I'm not that good at managing more than one or two characters at a time anyway.

If I am wrong about the reasons for this *coughs*"Empty Ultrinnan", then could someone please explain to me why it is empty, preferrably Yurell, Ainjyl, or others who have taken the opposite side of my stance
All right. I'll do my best to explain my own personal beliefs for why Ultrinnan has experienced a rather dramatic decrease in players. First, I need to put on some good thinking music, this one is kind of a tough question to answer without rambling too much.
The decline in drow players is the result of several factors, some of which could not be avoided. The simple fact remains that the drow are not immune to the same factors that cause a decline in player base across the whole server. However, being a smaller population base, these losses are felt much more keenly in the drow community over the community as a whole. Grade school starting, exams in college, winter holidays and other such factors can all be included in this category.
There are also a number of avoidable factors that have had an impact into the decline of drow players. The most important factors lie with both the DM's and the players. DM's and players are mutually inclusive. Without one the other could not exist. As such, any problem that exists and is substantial exists in both realms (that of the DM and that of the player) of Amia. The most noticeable problems are a lack of understanding, a lack of patience and a stagnation of activity.
A lack of understanding has become extremely evident in the both the DM team and the drow player base. Both sides have adopted the stance that they are right and that the "other side" is wrong to different degrees. The DM's must be sensitive to the requests of the drow player base and must be able to sort through a pile of PM's and threads and discern which are inspired by some sort of ill feelings due to a sense of losing and which are valid complaints about whatever the DM happens to be doing. Many drow players voiced concern over the most recent drow plot and after weighing whatever factors they weighed, decided that if the plot was not concluded in a timely fashion, they would be leaving. Being armed with this information, nothing was done to advance the plot.
While this may seem like the finger is being pointed at the DM's, the player base must remain calm and patient. DM's are human beings, too. They have responsibilities in their lives that do not allow them to be at the beck and call of the players at all times and will, on occasion, have issues that keep them away from Amia for certain stretches of time. Failure by the drow player base to recognize this and apply it to their decisions will result in unrest and decisive maladaptive behavior.
When the drow player base lost patience and began to cease playing their drow characters, it caused a chain reaction that resulted in less and less players logging into Amia on their drow characters. This trend builds upon itself and can still be noticed today. Drow players will log on as their drow character and loiter in Ultrinnan for a moment or two before either logging off and re-logging as a surface character or merely logging out all together. A simple count over a several hour period the other day resulted in a total of almost a dozen players logging in as drow and then switching to other characters within a small amount of time. If each of these players had decided to stick around and be patient, they would have seen the other drow who logged on and RP would have resulted and then other characters would appear and join in the RP and this would continue to build on itself and result in a higher population within Ultrinnan. This stagnation is directly related to a lack of patience.
There are other lesser factors that contribute to the lack of activity in Ultrinnan. A certain amount of this lies in sheer laziness and can be noted on the forums quite easily. It can be seen in players who post how they feel the drow player base or in character world of the drow is suffering and dying, yet do absolutely nothing to attempt to stifle this trend that they notice. Blaming established drow players, DM's or any other factor for this is only an excuse and not a very good one at that.
At it's current point in existance, Ultrinnan is ripe for the picking by any players who wish to step in and take charge. The offices of Ul'saruk and Ul'faeruk are completely vacant as the players have decided that they no longer have a desire to continue on Amia for whatever reason. The offices of Ul'Veldriss and Ul'athtaller are also up for grabs as both those players seem to have taken leaves of absence of undetermined durations. The houses, as well, are in a slump. A new house would be able to easily gain a significant amount of power in a small amount of time if effort was applied to it's creation.
At this point, the main concerns have been addressed, but not solved. I can offer no easy solutions to any of these problems as they encompass quite a large variety of personalities and motivations. However, I do rest assured that things will work themselves out. There have been more than a few new drow players who are enjoying themselves as they learn the in's and out's of playing a drow in Ultrinnan. Hopefully, this experience will not limit itself to those few, but will spread to others who will come to Ultrinnan hearing about the quality of the experience there and will find a niche that they themselves like and the trend will reverse itself causing Ultrinnan to regain a certain amount of notoriety.
I would like to reiterate that the preceding is merely my own point of view and should be treated as such.

I have personally always had the view that drow players need the same solution you give to children who act out: structure. And I have been a silent and a heretofore completely unspoken proponent for a major overhaul of the OOC intricacies of drow houses and, yes, even surface factions.
If you don't, Lolth will turn you into a elven housefly and inject you with venom that turns your innards to gel, and then she'll suck you dry, not in the happy way, but with twenty thousand piercing fangs and a gullet deep as the void of space.
Want me to leave the hall light on for you?

I know you're speaking for yourself, but try not to single out players in the same sentence. Zanticor and myself are 'taking a break' for reasons that the DMs have been informed of, Arith was for the same reasons until he decided he was done; this is contrary to what certain people who caused the issues in the first place have said, or what I have heard recently about you telling everyone that I quit because of a DM, when last time I checked we do not maintain any form of contact and that 'fact' is entirely false.
I am still around. I log in from time to time to run the shop and try to do a few meetings. I am a full time college student. I do have a job. I do despise a lot of things on this server, one of the top being rumor mongering. I will try to log in more now that my first section of exams is over.

I would say you need critical mass to get an area to become a popular spot. If you log in each night, twiddling thumbs solo in L'Obsul, it quickly becomes not much fun. If 4 people log into L'Obsul, you'll have the start of a critical mass. Once you've 10 players, you're an RP mecca!
1 = dead
3= ticking along
4 to 6 = start of critical mass for RP opportunities
6+= Patient is looking healthy again.
10+= Joy! Everyone will want to roll of a UD race...till next month when something else becomes in vogue.
Sooo...you need 3+ bored epics to hang out in said area socialising, long enough for others to feel like its a place worth investing time in according to my calculations on the RP monitor device.

First and foremost.... don't pick apart semantics. I said:
Quote:
The offices of Ul'Veldriss... [is] up for grabs as [midnight] seem[s] to have taken leaves of absence of undetermined durations.
You said yourself that you are "taking a break" and that you only log in from "time to time". That makes what I said completely true. So throw your accusations of rumor mongering elsewhere, please. If you have any further slander you'd care to throw my way, feel free to do so through a more private method, such as a PM or on MSN.
Secondly, I don't "rumor monger". Anytime I have something to say that is either A.) Opinion or B.) Not known for fact I always say so. The passing along of what little information is known about a subject when asked is not rumor mongering. No offense, midnight, but you're not that important to me to run to people going, "Guess what I heard! You'll never believe that midnight quit because of a DM!" If you want the people that are doing that, look elsewhere. If you're going to slander me, at least do it with something that I'm actually remotely guilty of.

woah, no need for such hostility here.
i dont think midnight was singling you out there, i have experienced 'rumor mongering' from many sources in the UD.
