He arrives precisely when he means to.
For the longest time on Amia we've been touting the shifter changes and until now you've gotten no real progress. The Testers will soon see a post in the tester forum containing a spreadsheet I want them to look over for balance reasons, and hopefully soon Disco can begin the painful process of retooling and integrating.
This post is to be a public "advertisement" of sorts, for the new forms. Every form in the entire class has been retooled with the exception of Dragonshape, which may or may not see changes, depending. Balance still needs to be done on some ends but the hardest part is done. Now we can start seeing results.
Every shape pre epic now has an epic form. Shapes have new abilities, improved old ones, and we're looking at merging held weapons with creature weapons, so unarmed forms no longer suffer. Shapes have better defined forms now, and some forms have been tweaked to fill in class roles that previously the Shifter couldn't fill. Also, every shape now has a fixed physical score. No more 8 STr bringing down crucial melee forms. But... without further ado, I begin.
~~~~
Everyone likes wyrmlings. They're fun to hang around, they've got the cool elemental breaths and they've all got True Sight. They're also a Shifter's first forms so they're really important because you immediately begin falling behind on your druid stuff. We have 5 wyrmlings and they've been broken up into 3 roles: Offense, Defense, Sneak. Red and White serve as offensive wyrmlings, one focus on STR/CON and the other on STR/DEX. Green and Blue are more tanks, focusing on CON/DEX and CON/STR. Black Wyrmling gives a shifter their first taste of stealth. In epic, all these abilities increase, and each form gets special abilities, like rages, ferocities, the ability to blast bolts of poison. Disco's offered to make a special one for the Blue that I don't want to spoil.
Wyrmlings are pretty general but hopefully they'll be a bit more use for you instead of simply picking Red and blasting fire because the red breath does the most damage and has the most HP. We've changed the breaths so hopefully they're all useful now.
~~~
The minotaur, the Gargoyle, and the Harpy fall neatly into three groups as well. Melee Striker, Melee Tank, and Melee Support. The Minotuar's gotten a boost, and now he gets his bonus feats earlier, and also uses a greataxe pre epic, instead of only in epic. The addition of some minor DR and more HP should also mean he's not going to die so fast like he does from Bioware. He's also got some abilities now too though. Balagarn's Iron Horn lets him mimic a giant stomp to knock foes off their feet. And in Epic, he gains the ability to pick up boulders and hurl them, giving him a potent ranged attack!
The Gargoyle is unchanged thematically, and remains a powerful defensive force. However, he's also a shifter's very first source of bludgeoning damage. This is important and gives the gargoyle added use where he might not have had it before. Howeve,r other than that, there weren't many abilities we could immediately find that made him interesting. So he's pretty boring outside tanking, but man does he do it well.
The Harpy's lost that worthless charming song of hers. No one used it anyways. We've replaced it with a Sonic Howl, an ability that gives the harpy potent AoE damage of an unresistable type to most monsters, making it valuable party backup. If that weren't enough, she has status effect howls, both pre epic and epic that let her wreak havoc on enemies. On top of it all, her claws do a base amoun of sonic damage. Overall, a big buff for the wench.
~~~
Three monsters. the class roles here are slightly less defined and are more support.
The Basilisk is still a petrification spammer. But now he's also got the ability to *de*petrify people with Stone to Flesh. The Basilisk also does bludgeoning damage, and has a token hide and move silently bonus due to natural camouflage. In epic, he gains the ability to cast a beneficial stone covering in the form of Stoneskin on himself and partymates, making this previously one trick pony into, well, at the very least a three trick pony.
The Manticore has been overhauled into being a 100% ranged creature. Equipped with a longbow (that won't show on the model! Enjoy flinging tail spikes!), he flings barbs at single targets, or he can use his Manticore Spikes ability to launch them into groups. As a keen eyed ranged supporter, the Manticore also recieves a bonus to Spot and Listen, and acquires the bonus feats Point Blank Shot and Rapid Shot, making using his regular attack over his manticore spikes very viable. Just don't let him get stuck in melee.
The Drider's undergone a big change. These nemeses of the Drow have learned to use their long reach, climbing ability, and large size to their advantage in the Underdark by using long hafted weapons. This one's a pro: He dual wields spears! And due to his Large size, only takes a -2/-2 AB penalty! On top of this, the Drider has permanent freedom, token spell resistance, and the ability to lob Magic Missiles and Darkness spells. In Epic, we see a general increase all around, including a deadly Sleeping Poison, famed and in common use among Drow and Driders, on his spears. And of course, being a spider, he is immune to poison.
~~~
We're getting to the big boys now. In this section is one of the bigest changed creatures in the entire lot: The Lizardfolk Whipmaster. We'll start with him.
Gone is that lame ol' whip. Give it back to Indy. We've given the Lizardman a mace, and in epic? A warhammer. He's now a shaman and sports a variety of powerful clerical spells. Hammer of the Gods, and Searing Light allow him to do powerful unresistable Divine Damage, and Cure Critical Wounds lets him heal his allies. In epic, these spells get more powerful, and morph into firestorm and Sunbeam! Clearly the choice to takcle undead with. On top of it all, we've given him Bonus Feats in Spell Foci for his spells. Druids and mages get them. Why not you guys, eh? The Lizardman also has an impressive array of immmunties. He's lived in the caustic swamps all his life. He's immune to Acid, Poison, and Disease, and since he's a cleric, shifting into him gives you +4 wisdom for the duration of the shift. Long live the Lizardman.
The Drow Warrior hasn't gotten as extreme of a makeover, but I'll tell you what he did get: A shield. Badly needed AC goes into this form, which has high strength, high dexterity, but the middling constitution of the Drow race. He weilds his frosty longsword, stopping enemies in their tracks. And if that's not enough, he's got some of the highest spell resistance a form can have, along with Darkness, and Melf's Acid Arrow for spelllikes, allowing the Drow to whip a nasty little acid dart from their pocket and toss it. Okay, so it's not as impressive as the Lizardman, but he does pick up Dodge, Mobility, Cleave, and Disarm, making him a mobile utility fighter. Epic kicks all of that up a notch, as well.
The Kobold. Ahh. We love the little guy, don't we? Now he's got dual daggers instead of a single shortsword, but he kept the poison. He's also got a few spell like tricks up his sleeve, with One with the Land, and Glyph of Warding allowing him to set traps, just like his real kobold buddies. H'es kept all the goody rogue feats like evasion and hde in plain sight, as well. And of course, the sneak attack. Not much else to say about this guy, he's dirty, he's reptilian, and he wants your guts for Heart Hat Day. Commando indeed.
~~~~
The last forms you get in pre epic go a pretty big overhaul too. Especilaly the Dire Tiger. Oh man, the Dire Tiger. LEt's start with him.
The Dire Tiger. This mofo's been turned into a mini weaponmaster. He'll nom your face faster than you can say "oh god, it's a lion, get in the car!" except it's a tiger, and there's no car to save you. He's got Slowing onhit to represent him RENDING YOUR LEGS TO BITS, and if that weren't enough? He's got Blinding Speed. He'll run you down. Sense sof a hunter give him spot and listen bonuses, and raw strength means he picks up Power Attack and Cleave, as well as Knockdown. I'd watch out, shadowprancers. There's a new king of the jungle, and it's 15 feet long and weighs 2000 pounds. Did I mention he picks up a Fear Howl in epic? Yeah. If you weren't scared before, you are now.
Unfortunately it all balances out when you get ot the Illithid, who's pretty damn boring, all things considered. He's still got his three psionic abilities to spam, and that's really all anyone cares about. You get a boost to your intelligence and wisdom (but not your charisma, you ugly bastard, evne if you do in PnP.), and your hivemind illithidness gives you Immunity to Mind Afffecting spells. You also get skill bonuses to your Spellcraft and Concentration.
The Medusa trades in her shortbow for a fancy longbow with unlimited ammo, while hanging onto her petrification abilities. Like the Basilisk, she's gained the ability to de-petfrify as well. Unfortunately, besides a generic all around boost (in epic, she sports a +5 innate longbow. Handy for those who might not have the phat lewt.) there's not much else you can do for a non Arcane Archer. Except give her Firebrand for AoE fire arrows, anyways. Which she totally has.
~~~~
The epic forms start getting even juicier, ladies and gents. I know Cory especially is waiting for the next section, so I won't keep him waiting.
~~~
The undead forms have been retooled, especially Vampire and Wraith. So we'll start with the boring one. Of course, all undead come standard with the classic undead immunities and vulnerabilities, so there's no need to list those off.
Sorry Cory, Risen Lord was already really good. It didn't get changed much. It's still a lich model, it's still got a scythe, and it's still an amazing tank. H'es still got his whirlwind attack... not much to say here, sorry! He does have a showoff spell like ability now though: Stone Bones.
The Vampire's been turned into a bit of the opposite of the Lizardman Shaman. With level draining claws and bites, regeneration and vampiric regeneration, he's got great offense and defense, but now he's also got access to Negative Energy Burst, and Harm. Which no, you cannot target on yourself. Sorry. He keeps the old Domination Gaze simply because it's a vampire classic, and picks up some bonus feats to help him in unarmed combat. And in the vein of Bram Stoker, he's also got skill upgrades to Bluff, Intimitdate, and Persuade. Good deal, huh?
The Wraith's been made into the sneakiest status delivering bastard this side of the afterlife. With Hide in Plain Sight, Silence, Mass Blindness and Deafness, and Improved Invisibility, along with a Wisdom Drain onhit sapping your spot and wisdom ranks, you can be pretty sure that if he doesn't want you to see him, you ain't gonna see him. Which is good for him and bad for you, 'cuz he's got sneak attack, and +5 incorporeal claws that are going to go right past most damage reduction.
~~~
I think the constructs may be some of my new favorite forms. In this one you get 3 niches: Offense, Defense, and "Anti-Mage".
The Iron Golem plays offense. Powered by arcane electricity, he's absolutely immune to it, as well as weilding an electric powered Greatsword to smite his enemies with. If this weren't enough, the golem can forcefullly streak bolts of lightning at foes with Call Lightning! And, I mean, this is on top of the construct immunities here people, and the oh so lethal Iron Golem Poison Gas. Did I mention every golem in this set has some amount of magic immunity? Level 1 and below spells just bounce off this guy. Wham bam kzap. Go blow stuff up.
The Stone Golem leans on defense, with powerful bludgeoning fists that Slow on hit, representing crippling, crushing blows. He's capable of whipping rocks a la the minotaur, and using the Stonehod spell-like to encase his enemies into rocky tombs. He's a tank on the level of the Risen Lord, too, with massive slashing and bludgeoning resistance, but like the knights of old, a crossbow bolt is liable to pierce and crack the stone to the foundations. On a better note? Immunity Knockdown. Can't knock him off his feet. Talk about being on Terra Firma.And finally, spells level 2 and below simply fizzle off him.
The Demonflesh golem is the exciting one. And the rest of them have been exciting. He's an antimage, wielding a gigantic trident that does Magical damage, and drains intelligence and charisma onhit. Those mages can just see their spells going bye bye. But wait, there's more! He cna cast Greater Spell Breach, and Lesser Spell Mantle! May as well call him the "Mystraflesh Golem" at this rate. He's got thirty two big ones for spell resistance and 25% immunity to the 5 main elements of fire, ice, sonic, acid, and cold. And last but not least, level 3 and below spells bounce off him like rubber. Was that a fireball? Sorry. Didn't notice. Too busy stabbing you in the face. Why the face? Because no one likes it in the face.
~~~~
And now last but not least for now until we decide if we're messing with the dragons, anyways, are the outsider forms. They've been tooled over.
The Azer stayed fairly much the same. He's a fire themed STR/CON tank. Cool stuff, big axe, and hes got a beefy shield along with some DR. Dwarven Defender In A Can. Well, more like Barbarian, since this guy can pop off a rage and eat your face. He's also got Flame Weapon. Bit silly for himself but great for allies! One touch and you're set to go. Fire Bolts add some single target ranged perks to the Azer as well. He's got classic melee bonus feats as well, like Power Attack and Cleave, and taunt skill points for when you've really gotta stick it to someone.
The (Death) Black Slaad is an interesting case. He doesn't really fit neatly into any role. He is dexterity based, and his damage varies widely based on where he is: He does snippets of damage from nearly every element. But he does have innate regen, innate spell resistance, and the ability to blast Chaos Spittle, as well as let loose a loud howl that Confuses anyone that fails a will save. I think that's pretty nifty. Ohg, and you get the slaad classic "Summon Slaad". Careful. They bite. Add that into a pakcage that's got some minor elemental and physical resist and you've got a form that doesn't do everything perfectly but should still be fun to play with, and most importantly, it looks different from the Shapechange Slaadi! Now if only we could fix that for the Iron Golem.
The Rakshasa only had minor tweaks. the fire dmaage on his staff is becoming Magic damage, befitting a mage. He's still got the True Sight and he's still immune to 8 and below spells. He's got some spell foci bonus feats to help out his spell likes, and some spellcraft and concentration skill bonuses. His spelllike have been jiggled a bit, and we've turned them into Ice Storm (Keep the classics!), Flame Strike (Yes We Can! Change is good!) and Storm of Vengeance to round out the elemental DPS with acid and electric. (Barakshasa '12: Keep the Change.) Hopefully this lets you get use out of more than just ice storm spam.
~~~~
And that's all of them. There's some other things we're working on, such as making druid and shifter levels stack for spell like purposes, so going 5 druid/5 fighter/20 shifter for example, doesn't make your spells it as hard as a wet noodle. This means Rakshasa will be powerful without needing 17-20 Druid levels.
But there you have it. the first big preview of the new Shifter stuff. testers, remember to check the tester forums for your spreadsheet download, and comment in the topic for balance. Everyone else, enjoy the preview and cross your fingers!

it looks crazy, I might have to take more shifter levels and get the other feat forms now.
I would not mind taking a look at that spreadsheet just so It saves me from asking like 1000 questions.
if I could be of anyhelp with the shifter fix I'll do my best seeing how I have been yelling about it for years.

Nice work, Tormak. I can tell you guys put alot of work into this. Hopefully these changes will help make shifter PCs more varied, less predictable, and more interesting to play and interact with.

The idea is that a shifter can fill in holes, but should never entirely replace a class. We're going to toy with balance. I make the Dire Tiger sound awesome, for example, but a barbarian or melee buffed cleric or WM is going to whip the pants off it.

na its will be fine, half the skills and stuff will have like reflex or will save for half damage so it will only hit for like 10-20 I'm sure.

I'm hyper-stoked. Like insanely so. Christmas come early.
Earlier complaints officially retracted, let's fire this bizz-natch up! I gots a dragon shifter that I'm just -itching- to play with.
Herkles is right though. It'll will be fun to see how many shifters spring up now that this is comin' out. 'Course, I guess that means you did your job.. Seein's as how the goal was to make shifters more playable.

see thats why I did not want them to block the server list for class levels, I want to see all the people who play shifter when they are not a walking dung farm.

The teaser might be a bit early, as we'll be implementing and hopefully playtesting this to check for glaring flaws and balance issue pre-update.

I'll not so much make a new Shifter as play the old one, to whom Construct shape was such a glaring disappointment that I'd sacked him for a year or so.
When in doubt, consider how good Dragonshape already is. It's even been nerfed, and it's still good. Three categories you see listed here are themselves Epic shapes. They should be able to at least hold a candle to Dragonshape.

You can't say 'nerf shifters' yet.

Is it possible for the spreadsheet to be posted? Kinda interested in the exact details lol. As it is from the description, they sound really fun and interesting. Just got me curious about the exact numbers.

B-b-b-b-b-b-b-b... BWAH! Gimmi gimmi gimmi!
I've tried for a shifter before and just went along with the forms for kicks and giggles.
But ooooh I'd like to try again when I can get a little -oomph- for battle shifting! [Because no, I didn't know how to perfectly build a shifter, and still don't!]
Or maybe I just really want a speedy tiger to be a hin mount. >.>
EDIT:
Nice job on the screenshots! They're a tale in themselves!

but it wont make them good or usefull, if people dont know the class,the forms and what they are fighting the changes wont matter much.

So even with some alterations to make the shifts better, I have to be a perfect build regardless? Bah humbug! It'll make RP designed builds able to do better

no I ment if you use say Azer who as of right now and I think still after the change would have "Immunity decreased: cold 50%" and you are fighting in brog with the froestgiants,snow harpys or blizzard spector things, your going to get WTFPWNED no matter what changes they made(unless they added 10000 HP)
the buffs will not make it shortbus proof.

Cool to see the server sees so many nice improvements this year. I like them all, level hiding in playlist, new chat functions, shifter change, ... . Keep on going.

I was trying to invoke my inner Billy Mays and get you excited! Obviously having a real cleric around is going to be better than the lizardman, or a real rogue/SD over the kobold, but the shifter cn be either of them passably at a given moment if you're missing someone.

if you gave me the sheet it would be so much faster for both of us
vampires domination gaze: will that be changed at all to be usefull abit or at least last more then like 12 sec if not just fail 100 times.
spectre Shadow attack: will that also maybe see a change?
over all, will all the skills we have see a formula change in terms of damage but most of all DC for success.
Construct shapes, will they get a locked in con so they dont have like no HP
I'm sure I will think of more later.

Go away! My class! Mine! *Flails*
But really. I love them. I'd say marry me, Tormy, but I'm marrying the new forms.
Heart them. Really.

Zomg, I love everyone and everything all of a sudden after reading that.
I made a shifter just recently, which I got bored of trying to level before I even took any shifter and then got bored of playing him because the whole point was to be able to shift...
I now have motivation to start playing him again and when this is implemented he will actually be fun and worth wasting how ever long it will take to level.

Is it an override that makes Risen Lord look like that?

Aye, its the override for the lich model. Its included in the override topic. The manticor and kobold are also override versions included in there.

On that note, it also makes the Wood Wight look awesome.

There's no existing lore for a monk/shifter cult that could be linked to undeath, or in Amia's case, Tarkuul... Is there? <.<

These changes are awesome. I really hope the druids elemental forms get an overhaul like this. It'd be cool if the earth elemental was immune to KD and could use its mastery over earth to encase enemies in stone.
Out of curiousity, is there a limit to the number of times the wrraith could cast mass blindness deafness for example or could they spam it?
Edit: The basilisk gets stoneskin in epic? Cant this be changed to pre epic and then the basilisk gets greater stoneskin at epic. Stoneskin is very easily available?

I dont belive druid forms are geting changed because your not a shapeshifter or forms are not ment to be anything near a level of a shapeshifter, you allready have a crazy pet,summons and spells, you dont need a melee form with it.

I didnt say a melee form and I said it would be cool if they could be. And theres no reason why elemental forms shouldnt be available to shifters. Regardless shifters are already going to be the best at shifting because they have all these new nifty forms to choose from.
As it is, elemental forms are lame. But yes...this is a shifter topic

it would be neat to gain all the forms other classes can turn into with spells or skills, but we cant, and as for elemental forms and dragon forms, changing them would effect the balance of the druid class alot with no cost to them.
as for "elemental forms are lame" you want to know whats more lame, the 15/-bludgeoning, piercing and slashing resistance casters companions get at 21st – 30th level where our epic and feat forms get stuff like vampires 15/+1 DR
(as of right now, dont have the sheet so dont know if our forms poor DR got replaced by 15/-bludgeoning, piercing and slashing resistance)
