It seems that most character's are oblivious to most pain. Any suggestions to change this? Creative ways to RP pain and make things more realistic?

For example, chugging a healing potion would be agonizing, the rapid healing would hurt. I plan on implementing a few more things into my RP, because I'm guilty of not RPing pain asmuch as I should.

When you've taken your 13'504'ed heal potion, I'd imagine you'd by quite used to the effects by then.

Unfortunately.

Alternatively, it could be absolute euphoria as the body is instantly invigorated by magic; which later leads to terrible terrible addiction to the things, requiring their frequent use at the first sign of injury at the hands of someone else.

My characters prefer to avoid as much pain as possible, and make decisions to that end in normal situations.

My main, Willow, tries not to use magic to heal unless it's necessary. So only in a battle, dangerous situation, when death has a high possibility and other life or death situations. Her excuse is: "Mundane means of healing should be used over magical means when possible. The body needs to know how to heal itself natural and not have to rely on magic for healing. Over use of healing magic weakens the body and makes you susceptible to disease and chronic ailments."

I RP pain as much as I can and as best I can to fit the character. Willow has a high tolerance for pain though, for many many good RP reasons. But she does, of course, feel it and react to it.

When my character had his wings pinned against his back as a punishment/teaching, even I felt the pain. :P

The good side is that he got quite resistant to some pains, since so far that pain was the strongest and most painful he felt.

I try to RP pain most of the time with any of my characters, even if they might be resistant to pain.

The key word is "resistant".

Not "immune".

My response?

I like to RP pain in my PCs in such a way that isn't demanding attention. Not like, "Oh, I'm hurt, help me, feel sorry for me." I just like the sadism of making my character suffer.

You know what makes this really difficult? Those characters who HAVE to heal me perfectly and instantly, and won't even let me walk around for a few days with my arm in a sling.

There's a difference between RPing out that one time your character gets badly tortured, and RPing out the 32000 times you get wounded while out hunting. The key here is to make the special occasion special and to not make reoccuring things tedious out of a sense of having to RP it.

Well, yeah, but my problem is that even when I want to RP out that one good time, other players are upset because their "incredibibible healin powerz" are lessened so that I can at least be impaired for a few days.

If people can't take it that you WANT a bit of suspense and lasting injury, then they aren't RPing healers, they are RPing counter-RP-units and should be knocked over the head with a mallet.

but thats how NWN made spell , only way to make people not treat it as 'BOOM READY FOR ACTION' is to make it not have that effect.

I stopped rping injured people after my attempt at rping my Drow Xal as blind. Within' literally five minutes of him returning to Cordor someone had apparently healed him. I wouldn't accept that, so I made him near sighted...very lame. Then people still kept trying to fix the issue. Grrrrrr.

Roleplaying pain is kind of like making love, it's about what you say.

Like some dude rips your arm off, you gotta be all like

ARRRRIIIIGGGHHHH!!! MY ARM! MY ARM!!!

And you gotta really make them feel that pain too make them feel it so well they get sick, they gots to know about every drop of blood squirting out of you and every last scream of pain and every pained tear and then you gots to ask "was it good for you". you ever see those disugsting gore-porn movies where some guy gets his intestines pulled out with a meathock and some dude sucks out his brains through his bleeding eyehole using a twisty straw you gotta be the guy on the bad end AND the guy on the good end. You're like that guy Mr. Saw from Saw who placed the Saw and made Saw Jr. Saw off his leg wth a Saw!

A good place to start is to inflict some pain on yourself to see what it feels like then you can accurately portray. I recommend visiting a BDSM dungeon to get the best idea.

As for healing potions I imagine they're like sex in a bottle and that's why everyone buys so much.

I totally agree, with myca who has been through a fair few "lessons" (torture) he is a very arrogant man.. and even when he was walking around with a healing wound on his side anyone asked he would quickly tell them where to go and leave him alone.

Use the word Ouch more often? xD

Seriously though, wince every now and then if you have a broken rib.
When doing movements that would effect an area of pain, make appropriate body and facial expressions.
Screw up your face if you are in pain.
Obviously screaming if in serious pain is a good one.
If putting on a face, make it so someone could know you are in pain even if your character is being a tough bugger.
Reach for painful area's and rub them or clutch at them.
Bandaged arm's or splints are good idea's.

Basically just include real life reactions to pain. If you get hit by a fireball and managed to dodge it but still get singed, then bat at the fire. If you do get hit but keep on charging, make it known that your face is still showing signs of pain and your skin has burn marks on it. Things like that.

I had my PC burned pretty bad on B-mia in the fire caves from that script that will ignit the careless.

Put a gauntlet-looking- modle on his arm and found a gloves hand, and turned the whole thing pure-white color [with some creativity being all the other colors on the clothes couldn't be pure-white then].

I think it turned out pretty nice for looking like he had a cast for a RL week protecting the skin that was slowing being regrown [yes, magically...] underneath.

On risk of regeneration is that it can seal the skin too quick. It doesn't promise to cure/prevent infections. And I don't see why an arrowhead under the skin, broken off, would be forced out by sealing the skin over really really fast. Meaning you've got a stabbing pain until that's removed properlly. Maybe limiting movement with a loud yelp each time you over extend. Or raise the arm over your heart.

A broken wrist? You're eye might tear whenever you pick something up and eventually you can't lift anything at all if you're not getting it treated it'd be so swollen and sore [went through this RL, ayup. Couldn't even lift a pencil to write I until I got a cast to stabilize.]

It's a bit of imagination what you think it should be like.

Headache, Nausea, Dizzyness, Sore or Tender spots. A good wobble in your step, being short winded, doubling-over looking ill, squiting your eyes tightly shut, gritting your teeth, yelling or calling out, gripping the wound, crying, cringing, tentitive movements, constantly shifting how to sit being in discomfort, saying a wound feels "throbbing", sharp stinging sensation, hightened sensitivity, burning sensation, uhm.... [end random brainstorm before bed.]

*OH! EDIT FAST*
Salandran healers, we generally are respectful of if you want an injury to be lasting for RP purpose or are seeking a quick-fix [and even then I drop a few ideas of side-effects and leave it to the player of injured PC to choose or not to use.]

I can see the Good and the Bad of Healing. Or perhaps the 'Plausible and Implausible'.

The Good (or rather, the Justified);

It's a High Magic setting. Mortal wounds are, indeed, quite simple to deal with. It works for the setting, the realm, and makes sense IC completely.

Greater Restoration, for example, does cure everything - right down to mundane insanity.

The Bad;

It hinders RP and doesn't allow for much growth, since a challenge to a PC can be defeated flat-out.

Honestly, I always find it easier to either denote the nature of the injury to not be (safely) worked by Greater Resotration, or alternatively; make it a Vile/Holy wound (only able to be healed magically in Hallowed/Unhallowed areas respectively. Otherwise, natural healing only), or another type of injury.

Afterall. You alone control your own PC.

In regards to pain itself; it's a trick subject. Again you've got the 'Makes complete IC sense' opposed to 'Hinders RP'.

I know for a fact that Eary, while feeling pain; simply doesn't react much to it. The 'Why' is all IC stuff to find out, of course. If he gets stabbed, he'll hurt, he just doesn't show it as obviously as most.

On the inverse, it is a bit disturbing when someone can, say, have a sword through their clavicle and simply shrug about it.

I'm sure a item could be made so healspell dont work on people who want to play hurt and so magic has no effect, but heal kits might still work kind of making it pointless.

Honestly, I don't think that's much of a problem.

I think it's something that your PCs can be either legitimately grateful for or annoyed with. Maybe even pissed! Ron has a point -- in a high magic setting it's completely plausible that there are people like that out there!

Sam usually asks before she attempts to heal anyone, but I can totally see the point of view of a character striving to do good by healing anyone they see hurt -- if they can, they should. It's a totally acceptable IC mindset!

..also.. I think Torzeng once mentioned to me that wounds don't heal unless the person being healed actually wants them to. I don't know if that's good lore-wise, but that and the holy/unholy things are things to look into if you're trying to add suffering to your PCs.

Lore-wise you're allowed a saving throw and spell resistance.
On Amia, the wounds do whatever you want them to

Well... there is already this idea floating around (it's even perpetuated by the DMs) that a level 30 character isn't the top of the food chain on Amia. Because everyone has or attains level 30, the levels of a farmer, a commoner and a guardsman are higher in comparison, and the "mundane normal" is higher than level 1, too.

Following this logic, why should a Greater Restoration in a setting where Greater Restoration has no worth at all (is attainable by everyone) mean so much? We do it with level, but we don't do it with any spells? I don't follow that logic. People have said about level 30 Spellcasters that they aren't truly epic because a world full of epics is boring. They've also said that level 7, 8, 9, 10 Spells are merely strong spells and not the non-plus ultra Epic spells that the game engine makes them out to be. Why would healing be different?

For me, Greater Restoration is a glorified Heal that may help certain ailments but only on the side of game mechanics. These negative stat effects like Ability Decrease, Disease, Poison, Curses and Level Drain are an everyday thing, and are equally easily cured by a Cleric, fountain or scrolls. That makes them all pretty mild. The real suckers are illnesses that don't show up on the stat sheet. Anything you RP in that fashion shouldn't be curable by "simple" Cleric spells.

*guy comes running up to them, casts Greater Restore and keeps on jogging without a word*

If people can't take it that you WANT a bit of suspense and lasting injury, then they aren't RPing healers, they are RPing counter-RP-units and should be knocked over the head with a mallet.

But given the fact that we have instant heal availible at the drop of a hat, perhaps those who dont wanna be healed should have a marker or so up. Compare to those who have a card in their wallet saying that they dont want transplanted blood and/or organs in case they are in an accident and are unconcious. If someone does not have such a card, one would assume they would want to be saved.

Its the same with healing, suffering from wounds in a setting such as Amia is just for sufferings sake, and not 'realistic' RP. This is of course fine. To each their own and all that...

Being saved doesn't entail a one-click solution to a problem that could present a good RP opportunity. One-click solutions is what I've seen many clerics do, and it just really gets on my nerves.

When you see three people roleplaying with one of them badly wounded, wouldn't you in turn try to roleplay? I dare say that using a Heal spell here isn't roleplay, it's a mechanical and unimaginative solution.

Times excluded when it's just what is expected.. i.e. on a hunt.

Well I rp healer, and I don't just do heal spell all the time.

Anyhow, I myself find it hard to rp pain. If my char is being tortuned I don't know how to react, each thing they do should be worse than the previous so..

AARRRGGGHHHH!!!

AAARRRRGGHHHHH!!

*Winces*

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!

And if someone comes and casts heal on you. Just rp nothing happened and if you want you can press r and injure yourself again. And hope that a "real" healer comes and at least tries.

Well... there is already this idea floating around (it's even perpetuated by the DMs) that a level 30 character isn't the top of the food chain on Amia.

I dunno. Sure, the "mundane normal" is higher, but that's why it's also normal for people not to age at all, cities to almost get destroyed multiple times in people's lifespans here (which may or may not be endless anyway), and etc. I don't think that means that GR and Heal aren't epic. It just means that Amians are so jaded by epic things that it no longer matters. I wouldn't say that that means GR doesn't heal things. It just means we have to come up and be creative to make things it can't heal.

I don't want to say things are lamer and work less good because we're too epic. I'd rather go for more epic and creative thinking.

I don't like having to "ignore" game mechanics.

I agree with Estara - just because you're in a place where there's a high concentration of very powerful people doesn't make the absolute strength of a spell any less.

Either way works for whatever situation. I know I sure as hell won't give up the disease my character has just because some cleric decides to cast Greater Restoration on me. You're Greater Restoration is as good as I decide to allow it to be, if you use it on me. I'm totally against a "cure all" spell. That's totally lame and uncreative.

I have a somewhat different perspective. I guess this is really the difference between fantasy and speculative fiction. While I enjoy both, I currently lean more towards the latter. (Obviously, being a fantasy game, I expect my taste to be in the minority.)

In fantasy people want to tell fundamentally the same stories in a different milieu. Fantastic elements are there to help set up or add color to a situation, but don't fundamentally change the types of situations people enter or how they approach them, except when the author uses them to skip things they don't consider interesting. So if someone is injured, it will be instantly healed if it would get in the way of the story the author wants to tell, but if the injury is important to the story the author will keep healing magic away -- either by making sure no healers are nearby, or healing magic "just doesn't work," etc.

In speculative fiction, fantastic elements are used to alter the kinds of situations that arise and how people approach them. The same situation of healing magic being unavailable might still happen, but the focus would be on exploring how people used to ubiquitous magical healing deal with its sudden absence. In other words, it would still focus on how fantastic elements make people's reactions to a situation different.

This is for the best I think. While I get greater enjoyment out of my approach, I'm not going to hunt anyone down and shove my vision down their throat. The server is large enough to live and let live.
