I know this discussion pops up from time to time but I have been running a little experiment on RP and I just wanted to share my thoughts with you. If you have been reading a lot on these forums then I don't believe you will see anything new here. Most of these opinions are my own and not very scientific.
The background:
There are two main reasons why I'm doing this.
1. I recently found a character concept that I like but in order to make it I need some DC's.
2. I have been playing a lot with XP farmers lately. Ending up in party's where my character did not belong RP wise and doing a lot of silly things.
My challenges:
The main problem with my different characters was that I wanted to get XP and gain levels but I wanted to do proper RP as well. And I do not only mean proper party RP but I mean staying true to your character and your character concept.
XP farming:
XP farming is a bit funny. It definitely dose exist on the server and if you go to the FoD (Forest of Despair in XP farmer language) you will see them. The main charasterisic of a XP farmer is that they do not stop for RP. They just run as quicly as possible to the next spawnpoint.
Is XP farming ok?
Is it really ok to just XP farm sometimes? Well sometimes you are just doing a character rebuild or you just need a lvl or two to get that new cool spell or the new cool equipment.. I'm not sure. Sometimes places like the FoD are nice because the XP farmers can go there and do their thing. But is it really ok? One thing is for sure. XP farming dose ruin RP. But if the XP farmers don't mix with the Role players is it really ok? What do you think?
Character concepts not fitting RP
I do not believe that you can create a character concept that dose not fit with RP. You can create a character concept that dose not fit with partying but that is not a crime. If you really want to make an anti social character that doesn't like to group up for adventuring then go ahead. As long as you play that character as an antisocial lone character then you are doing good RP.
Finding people to RP with
Finding people to RP with is a bit funny. At first I tried to encourage the party's that I joined to focus more on RP or come and do a none XP farm area with more focus on RP. Usually I didn't even get a reply on my requests.
After that I tried a different tactic. Before the reset I had organized two party's. One going to FoD for XP and one going for RP adventuring. Just after the reset I added my self to the Party People List and I started to get a lot of tells about party. I told everyone that there were two party's and that we were going for RP adventuring. There was a lot of people who wanted to XP but there were also some who wanted to RP adventure.
RP adventuring:
(Please see: The REAL Problem with Amia - "RP")
Well I think we did almost everything by the RP book from IC planing of our adventure to IC loot distribution. Even IC resting with camp fires and bedrolls and I must say we had a lot of fun.
The DM's and the DC
When it comes to DC I have 4. I don't know exactly how much I have been playing on the server in the past year but I do consider my self to be a fairly good role player with more then 15 years of computer and real life role playing experience both as a player and a DM/GM so I think it's fair to say that DC's don't just drop from the sky. I tried pushing the DM's for coins to see if that helps both in game and on the forums. It did not. I think this is one of the main reasons why a lot of people do not focus on RP because they don't see the reward. I believe there should be a better system for handing out RP rewards then some random DM randomly observing your RP and randomly giving you DC's But this is another discussion so please don't flame this thread with replies on DC rewards systems.
Sticks and carrot's XP and DC:
One of the things we humans like to see most is action and result.
I think that is why we like XP and XP farming so much. You go to FoD with some people and get 50XP pr wolf and soon you gain a lvl or two. I think that's one of the main problems of RP and RP adventuring is that when you are XP farming if you loose momentum you start to loose XP. In places like FoD you are buffed up and you get a lot of XPM (XP pr minute) If you stop for 2 minutes to discuss how the weather is in the FoD you will potentially loose a lot of XP or I think that is how people feel.
Results and conclusions:
Yes I am a role player who likes XP. I admit it. One of the things that I like about this server is that it is possible to get XP and gain levels quickly but I do believe you can do RP and get XP at the same time.
I know some people would point out that I should not do RP for the DC but that i should do RP for the RP. Well I do RP for RP. Thats why I play on an RP server. I did not start to RP for this experiment I have been role playing all along.
There is a lot more to be said about all of this but I think that is enough for now.
I think there are a lot of players who feel the same way as I do and I will definitely continue to create party's for RP adventuring.

Often people don't RP at all and they just all run around silently killing spawn after spawn after spawn.
I saw that in 4 of 5 ghroups with which I hunted.
Its a catch 22 I wager, "People don't RP because they don't get any rewards but they don't get the rewards because they don't RP".
At least no instant rewards.
At least I have some fun regarding that with my pixie, who is quite obnoxious in that regard and is always talking.
"Why are you so silent? Did you swallow your tongue?"
*no response*
"Oh noes! They did make you swallow your tongues didn't they? Someone helps him/her!"
*No response*
"You know you look sort of funny!"
*No response*
"And the lack of your vocal cords doesn't makes it any better!"

The reward should be the RP. If people RP for DC's they will force RP and it will be unenjoyable. They will stalk DM attention and they will cause all kinds of issues. Personally I'm of the mind if your RPing for DC's rather then the reward of rping then you are on the wrong server.

When I first came to Amia, all the DCs I got were DCs when I -WAS- adventuring. Basically because I was the only one emoting, doing war cries, and grunting in pain from damage and stuff.
I got about 5 DCs in about 2 weeks doing that. I believe the reason I got it was because I was basically one of maybe 5-6 people who did it consistently and was more than *poke poke*
Thereafter, I stopped, as the grind continues. It was fun the FIRST time I got to level 20. After that, it got boring, and then unfun, and so now I only do combat emotes on occasion, when the mood hits me.

it is kind of funny when people say "roleplay for the roleplay". What if the character needs DCs to change something in him/her-self?
The DC system is outdated and doesn't work. It is almost ridiculously stupid that special things cost dream coins, when they are so elusive. We have been forced to RP for DCs, because that is the only way the character can become unique.

I am truly sorry. I did not mean to criticize the DMs or the wonderful job they are doing. I know this sounds like ass kissing but I am talking about all the dirty PVP and OOC quarrels they have to deal with. I was just pointing out that I do not like the DC system as it is today.

Character concept that doesn't go well with RP? Just make another black-cloaked red-sworded dude who is antisocial and carries a terrible curse. You really don't have to RP an awful lot and can still be accepted in the black-cloaked community. And remember the letter combination for the "No!" voice reply, you'll be using it an awful lot.

Vurk would know all about that. What with him being the first to create a gay half orc paladin and all.

I completely disagree with this - if you are just RPing to get DCs you probably don't deserve them. RP for the sake of RP and come what may.

This is well and good until the RP takes the character to a point where they need DCs to reflect the change the RP brings. It's most certainly not wrong to want DCs for RP, and I doubt someone "force roleplays" on a roleplay server they chose to play on because they wanted to roleplay.
They are fairly scarce these days, even as someone who spends all of their time on the server roleplaying, so you don't need to take a 'if you don't like it then GIT OUT' attitude on someone who has presented a problem they have in a mature manner.

I've found that if I focus on what I do myself with my characters and how they feel and how they think, I have fun. I really hate OOC while in game, It disrupts my concentration. For a long time I would just poignantly ignore OOC tells, or simply reply with .. 'Do what your character would do, I will do the same.' or something to that effect.
I still put party chat in the combat log window and close it while at meetings and stuff. Because it really really is distracting.

Characters are unique by the way they are RP'd... not all the fancy stuff a player can get for their character with DC's.
Over my years here on Amia, I average between 1 and 2 DC's a month.
The thing that makes Amia great is the fact that it meets the needs of so many different types of people. If you're an epic loot farmer, then you can be that. If you're one of the people who take almost 6 months to get to level 5 because of all the focus you put on RP, you can do that. If you're like most of the server and lie somewhere between these two extremes, then you can be that person.
If a group that you team with doesn't meet the needs you have to have a good time, then drop the group and go on your way until you find a group of like-minded players. This goes for anyone. If you want to farm, but the group is more into RP, then find another farming group.... and vice versa.
I, personally, go with the flow. I don't mind being a mindless killing machine and I don't mind RP'ing between spawns... it's kinda like Brad Pitt's character Tyler Durden said in Fight Club. "You determine your level of involvement in Project Mayhem". You determine the level of RP you experience while on Amia. If you want more, go out there and find it.

I don't see anything experimental in this post. However I will say: Begging for DCs like you did in that forum post is almost a guaranteed way to get yourself ignored because it makes you look selfish and petty. There is a difference between letting a DM know that good RP (that jyou just happen to be involved in) is going on, and straight up coming to the forums and saying "Give me DCs", which is what you did.
Quote: RP adventuring: (Please see:The REAL Problem with Amia - "RP") Well I think we did almost everything by the RP book from IC planing of our adventure to IC loot distribution. Even IC resting with camp fires and bedrolls and I must say we had a lot of fun.
You had a lot of fun. So what's the giant problem here?

Oh. You know, if you'd have put that in your first post at the top of the topic I'd have understood the topci a lot better, instead of trying to sell this as an "experiment".
DC 'allocation' is not equal. It isn't and it won't be perfect, but we try our best. Some people gets DCs and others don't due to a mix of variables like DM coverage, DM whim, 'quality of RP', and many many other factors. It's not a perfect system, and the DM team has always acknowledged this. But to date, no one's come up with a better idea to manage requests that allowa custom items and personalized things to be added to the server without flooding us with requests day after day after day.
Look at how many requests for biographies are posted in the requests forums now. If everything became free, we'd need an entire tema just to handle requests. I know the DC system isn't perfect and not everyone gets showered with what they want, and yes, it's more effective to level up by hunting and not with DCs, but it's the best we've got.

Quote: Is XP farming ok? We've certainly all done it, there's no denying that. It's the need to just push and get that last level before having to go to bed, or just wanting to hurry up and get this quest over with. There's an inherent need where you don't really want to mess around, and instead just want to go out and smash things. And that's fine. Just don't overdo it. And from a DM's perspective, the no-RP XP-farmers mean that we get to focus our attention elsewhere, on people who are actually working on RP. Quote: Character concepts not fitting RP Always has existed, always will exist. Sometimes justice will be meted out (i.e. the NG Druid remarking to the Palemaster, "Hey, that's a pretty neat undead summon you have!", who then proceed to whack beasties for a couple hours together), and sometimes I'll just shake my head, and find others with more appropriate RP. Quote: Finding people to RP with Yes, it can be difficult. It took me a long long time to find a group that I enjoy RPing with, and it took me a long long time to be comfortable enough to reach beyond that group to other individuals. Just keep at it. Quote: RP adventuring Heh, there's only one slight problem I have now with my character, on RP adventures. From an RP perspective, I don't want to run. Hate running. You can't continually run up and down mountains in full plate, it's ridiculous. But then the mechanics part of my brain kicks in, and argues that my buffs will only last so long, and I can't waste them. It's a tough balancing act. Quote: The DM's and the DC This one's been discussed so many times on the forums that I've lost count. Three, I think. I dunno. Anyway, it's just a matter of being lucky. There's usually about 60 other players a DM has to deal with, with rebuilds, random questions, having to possess NPCs in Cordor because some git thinks it's funny to run around naked screaming "I AM THE EGG MAN!", requests to look at RP for special widgets, breaking up ginormous OOC fights, etc. etc. etc. And if a DM isn't busy doing all of that, or running one of their own events, they might happen to select you (yes, you!) to jump to out of the long list of players, and ride along to see what RP is going on. And if the DM watching finds your particular brand of RP enjoyable, DCs may get passed out. It's just a roll of the dice, with lots of maybes and ifs thrown in. Just Roll with the Punches. Quote: Sticks and carrot's XP and DC
A problem I see a lot, especially on the forums, is people thinking that XP and RP are mutually exclusive. If you are currently hunting, you're a braindead powergaming bossfarmer who contributes nothing to the server except a bunch of lag. If you are talking to someone in Cordor, you're a tea-sipping pansy power-RPer who is too afraid to step out of safety and experience the real challenge of gaming. Neither of these are true.
I like XP. I like RP. And a lot of you do too.

DCs are fine. I say this every time this topic comes up. You can do what ever you want without DCs and DCs do not make you unique at all. I much rather RP with a good personality Human Fighter than with a the half devil/ half yaun-ti winged character with 3 custom widgets.
If you begin to understand that DCs = Luck/Time and DCs =/= Awesome RP, then you'll get it. It isn't that you are a bad RPer, you are just unlucky or on at the wrong time.

Haven't played for long, and have been away for a bit, but when I was playing Amia everyday I found it funny that most groups I found would be completely silent IC while typing frantically OOC in the Party Chat. I like XP just like everyone else, but if the party members are obviously keen on typing, just not typing IC, I find an IC excuse for my character and try to find something more to my liking. Even if it is solo hunting and RPing with my character's summons/animal companions or the other NPCs.

Quoting Cobberto for emphasis.
Some people have priorities. To some, RPing an adventurer is what they have fun doing. That means they're going to go.. out and adventure. Mood, health, and tiredness can affect RP quality. Do keep in mind multitasking is just something some people can't do well. Does that make them bad RPers and Power gamers? I wouldn't say so. Sometimes when you get off a hard day of work you want to do something to get away from that, but some days you're just brain baked. Some people have more rough jobs than others.
I know that some people will discount other's that don't meet their 'RP standards'... But ultimately I want to remind everyone that those are people on the other side of the screen, and they're trying to RP, so give em some slack.
To me, someone putting forth the effort to try, and improve, will get infinite patience from me. I'll go -way out of my way- to help them, if they want help. I'll fully admit I wasn't always like that.

I'm always trying to roleplay, in all situations, even when I'm xp grining. It wont give me DC's but it makes me satisfied. The DC's I've got are all from different DM events. But I don't care since I do what I think is funny.
I like to party with other RP players too. See what happens if you begin to RP in a xp grinding group. Most of the time, at least one other starts to tag along. Doing fun RP yourself and make the other in the group laugh is a good way to turn grinders to RP:ers.
What always ticks me off are RP:er who has a "concept" that they want all around them to follow. It can be the one who pretends he is blind hunting lizardmen in the quagmires (how did he get there? why should the rest of the group even care?). It can be the two pretending to be in love having the other four taking their feelings in consideration and the whole party is moving as snails. It can be the one saying he is taking all our souls if we don't obey him since he is a (low level) necromancer. It can be the druid in FoD who wants us to not slay the wolves, only the werewolves. In short - all those RP players who demands that they are to be the center of all activity all the time and thinking that RP is more important for a random group than hunting for xp, It isn't. But it can be equally fun and important. Be satisfied with that.
Concepts are fun sometimes though, one of the most memorable RP adventures I had was with a chap pretending to be a vampire.

Al those things can be dealt with ICly, and to the players in question the RP may be more important to them than the XP - I've left groups that would be great for my dwarf in terms of xp when I find an orc in them, for example.
Edit: If you've tried to deal with it ICly, and they are ruining your fun on an OOC level, a politely-worded tell can fix a lot of problems.

something i do have to say about rp hunting. how realistic is it for a group to actually do a lot of talking while on a hunt? I personally prefer to have RP during the hunt, but seriously, if you are in a place tough for your level, wouldnt your group try to be quiet until you come to a spawn, because if you are really loud you could be ambushed while unawares?
Also, the (assumed sarcastic) comment on stopping to talk about the weather while in FOD is crazy. I mean, you and your buddies are slaughtering werewolves dead set to tear your head off... and you are talking about the weather?
not saying hunt instead of RP, but dont do pointless RP. RP hunts are great ways to build your character and help it evolve.

Your character could be trying to appear blasé about the affair, or trying for a breather. Or he may actually be bored as he slaughters werewolves by the score tirelessly.

Sure, you can be quiet, but that doesn't mean that there has to be complete and utter silence. I know using the Whisper channel is near impossible during a hunt, so people can just type *Whispers* or *Hushed tones* before they say something. There's also the possibility of emoting hand and arm signals.
I think I would die if I saw a group moving through a dungeon in classic military fashion, with arm signals, buddy rushes, stacking on doors, etc... Sure they might not be very successful at the actual killing part, but I'd get a kick out of it.

Get a rogue, two fighters, a cleric, a mage and someone else and hunt in an area that is "too high level" for you but where it is still possible to attract the enemies one at a time, and you'll see just that happen. The rougue will be the scout and monster spawner, the meatshields will stop the monster, clerics use magic and heal and the wizard buff them before fight and save one occasional spell for emergencies. That's the only way to survive. In servers where you get 200-500 xp for a major kill, this is the way to go. A drawback with Amia is that you seldom get more than 50 xp for a kill, no matter how hard it is to take down, so it's better to hunt things that give 30 xp with low or no chance of dying, and kill them over and over and over again, if you are hunting for xp. A slow way to kill monster promotes xp too.

you should have seen some of isen and co's beholder runs back in my early epic. we basically did just that, set up plans and did the whole nine yards. I've had a couple of times when things were just done with hand signals as well, not so much recently though.

I've done that a few times with my low level bard, espically in the trolls on Amia B. Couple of us went in all tacical squad style, casing the area, drawing it enemies, fighting them off. Was bloody awesome. I felt like having subtle music from Rainbow Six playing in the background or something.

I try that every now and again. Sometimes it has fantastic results. Most of the time it's like trying to pull teeth.

I thank you for all of your replies. It was my intention to peek under the lid of two of the Pandora's boxes that is on this server. The DC system and the XP farming.
I think what I have learned from all of this is that Amia is an RP server and that there are a lot of really good RP players playing on it who want to RP and that if you want to RP even on adventures you have that choice and you can do so.
I apologies if any of you have been personally offended it was not my intention.
I got 1 more DC yesterday so now I only need 5 more DC before I can send my request but I do not mind if it takes me another month. I have a lot of IC RP to do before I feel my character will be ready for the change.
Further more I will continue to RP. Like I stated before:
Quote: I know some people would point out that I should not do RP for the DC but that i should do RP for the RP. Well I do RP for RP. Thats why I play on an RP server. I did not start to RP for this experiment I have been role playing all along.
And I will continue to do so.
Edit: I forgot to write that I had 4 now I have 5 and I need 10 sorry

6 DCs is a rather odd number. What do you need done? I can't think of something offhand that costs 6 DCs, unless it's a PLC cloner.

He had four, he just got one and he needs another five, which totals ten. Sounds like a skin change.

I deny.
As to the thing as a whole. I really think it just comes down to playing your
character like you think your character should be played. DCs and all that
is very good. But its just not worth it in the end. If you dont like to roleplay
then dont, if you like to do so you dont realy need DCs if you just forget that
they even exist.
Obsessing about getting DCs is the worst thing that can happen.

Dwagin wrote: Some people have priorities.
I agree to some extent Dwagin (about people not wanting to multitask or having different priorities). I am as guilty of that as anyone else, but as I said, it bothers me when, say, Magni joined a group, full party mind you, and RP was basically non-existant, while the Party Chat was running like mad with typing. Then the other day I met a player who said he was not interested in RP at all (new to server and to NWN), but I kept RPing whatever happened while Magni showed him around. Result, after three or four gaming sessions the guy was enjoying RP, and RPing willingly and gladly. So between the two situations, I much prefer the second, "beginner RP" with someone interested is far better than mindless XP with anyone anytime in my book.
PS: bold text to say I was on the receiving end of said courtesy, and boy was it appreciated... Magni will keep the pattern Xyrkha created for his purple armor for as long as he lives in Amia. =)

It's the need to just push and get that last level before having to go to bed, or just wanting to hurry up and get this quest over with. There's an inherent need where you don't really want to mess around, and instead just want to go out and smash things. And that's fine. Just don't overdo it.
Do you think we could use less of this though? Perhaps we can lower the mindless grinds by increasing the XP rate by 50-100%.
As much as I want to make every excursion on my toons to be an adventure, I just run out of purpose on why we're raiding the minotaur maze (insert dungeon here) for the third time...

At least you are raiding something different. U sure would not complain about that when the standards is
Goblins 3 - 6
Orcs/Kobolds 6 - 8
Trolls 9 - 12
Werewolves 12 - 16
Lizardmen 16 - 20
Yuanti 20 - 22
Giants 23+
Abyss/Beholders 25+

Aye and hopefully Amia keeps on improving.
Personally I'd like to see that most PCs go through most of the areas in the module completing quests until they reach 30. That there won't be a need to farm particular monsters to level up.
Make it more casual so people won't be forced to grind for xp if they ever want to level up.
Spend 10-15 minutes forming a party and buying supplies, 5 more minutes getting the quest, 30 minutes of going in x dungeon and recovering y artifact/solving z mystery, then 10 minutes going back to town and finishing the quest. Ding.
Heh, anyways this is an old thought here in Amia.. it's been suggested many times before I believe. ^^ Point is nobody likes mindless grinding but sometimes it's a necessary evil in the Amian current setting.

Put Kobolds and Orcs with Goblins and put trolls on 6-8, then Malar on 9-12.

Cinmay is sitting on a beaten up old chair with hands folded looking down at the floor. The room in the old Amia players community center is over crowded and the circle of chairs has 2 layers and many people are standing behind them. On the wall a half broken banner has the letters "X F A" and under them "XP Farmers Anonymous". The coffee machine is riddled with brown stains and duck tape, clearly long past its prime. Cinmay looks at the floor and starts to speak. "Hi may name is Cinmay and I'm an XP Farmer." The group replies "Hi Cinmay" He looks away and tries to find a spot high up on the wall to fix he's eyes on. He doesn't dear to look anyone in the eyes. Those sitting closest to him can see that he is fighting to keep the tears at bay.
"Well the weekend started pretty well. On Friday I role played all day long. I was so busy role playing that I got less then a thousand XP that day. I was even awarded a DC for my role playing" The group claps and two of the people sitting behind him claps him on the shoulder. He smiles a little. Then yesterday it happened. I was in a group and I was trying my best to role play as usual. But there was this player in the group who kept running head to the next spawn point not waiting for the others. Finally we stopped almost all role playing and we ended up in the Forest of Despair. I even gained three levels." He stops talking. Tear's now running from he's eyes. The support group leader says "Now remember people. Do not judge. We have all been there." People starts to clap and many of the players nods in agreement. Cinmay hugs the player beside him and the grup leader says "Thank you for sharing Cinmay. Now who's next?"
